Timeless Beauty In this great loneliness, this undisturbed silence of early morn, just on the edge of dawn, we have provided free in this natural theatre an effect beyond even the imagination of man.

Nowhere else that we know of could such a scene be equalled, look which way we will.

This alone, if nothing more, seems worth finding Scilly for – we are away completely from the noisy world, no shriek of steam whistle or motor horn, and in place of a murky smoke-laden atmosphere we have the pure ozone-laden air fresh from the sea, filling our lungs with healthgiving properties.

A LONE LIGHTHOUSE Sited on the most northerly isle of Scilly, Round Island Lighthouse was built by William Tregarthen Douglass. Completed in 1887, it was one of three lighthouses on the archipelago at the time, the others being on Bishop Rock and St. Agnes. Standing 19 metres high, the lighthouse was modernised in 1966 and automated in 1987. The only access, aside from a helicopter, is by a flight of steps cut into the solid rock.

he Isles of Scilly, 28 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean off Land’s End in Cornwall.

Small, low lying, isolated. Bathed in warm sunshine and calm clear waters yet battered by storms and raging seas; haunted by coastal mist and shipwrecking sea ledges, yet immersed in heavenly hues and the darkest of night skies. Steeped in maritime history and with a rich cultural lilt inspired by its wondrous, outstanding, natural beauty. This is England’s enchanting archipelago.

There are five inhabited islands, the largest just 2.5 square miles, and scores of tiny, uninhabited rocks and islets, all pocket size and closely clustered. Home to 2,200 islanders and born ‘n’ bred Scillonians, St. Mary’s takes the lion’s share of the population – 1,800 in total; Tresco, St. Martin’s, Bryher and St. Agnes share the 400 others.

SPRING

comes early to Scilly and with it a skip in the air and a true sense of wellness. Boatmen can be spotted at Porthloo boat yard launching their trusty workhorses, having given them their annual lick of paint. Cottage owners, shops and restaurants put the finishing touches to their new season makeovers.

The return of the Scillonian III in March is celebrated; early mornings see farmers out sowing their summer crops and fishermen once more taking to the sea. Coconut-scented gorse fills the air as does the arrival of fulmars, sandwich terns, willow warblers, sand martins and swallows. By April, the islands are in full swing. Time to explore the coves, the lighthouses, the coastal paths – by bike, by hike or by boat. Head out into the spring sunshine and fill your lungs with sea fresh air.

SUMMER

Oh Scilly in summer, what can we say?

Bright, white; perfection on a pint-sized plate! Crystal clear seas and cobalt blue skies bring out the best of these islands in summer.

Time to take to the water – swim the coves or between the islands, hire a SUP or sailing boat and take off for uninhabited shores, snorkel with seals, and island hop to your heart’s content.

ST. MARY'S An island of great walks, of fantastic history, Scillonian culture and heritage – and the largest in the archipelago.

A

rriving in Scilly by ferry or flight will bring you to St. Mary’s and your first glimpse of island life. It’s the largest island in the cluster, but still very small – the entire circumference is little more than 9 miles.

Rush hour here is when people flock to the quay to catch the inter-island boats or wander through its capital, Hugh Town with its charming cluster of cafés, shops, galleries and a museum, bordered on both sides by shellscattered beaches. Hugh Town, a mere hamlet by mainland standards, is also just a pebble’s throw from spectacular coastal walks and places rich in heritage and history to explore at an easy pace. This is a place where children can roam free, artists abound and nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts can truly appreciate the island’s outstanding natural beauty.

Head to the top of Telegraph Hill, pause for breath at Peninnis Lighthouse, seek out the secret paths through the serene Carreg Dhu garden or discover the Iron Age burial chamber at Bant’s Carn and the ancient settlement at Halangy Down. Gaze at the unusual ‘loaded camel’ rock on Porth Hellick. Feel the sand between your toes on Pelistry Bay, and clamber over to Toll’s Island at low tide for a real >>

The island’s rich maritime heritage is woven through the very fabric of the landscape. Take in panoramic views from the Garrison headland – once the frontline of England’s defences and admire the enchanting Star Castle that harks back to the 16th Century.

Step over to Old Town for the sheer beauty and quiet of Old Town Bay, flanked on one side by a tiny medieval candlelit church. Look out for the unassuming and secluded grave of the former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson amidst the ancient Scillonian gravestones with the sea in the background, stretching endlessly out into the distance.

THE SPIRIT OF ST. MARY'S SAVING LIVES AT SEA The RNLI is one of the most revered charities on Scilly; many locals volunteer as lifeboat men. When there’s a “shout” you’ll see their vehicles abandoned on the Strand near the RNLI boathouse slip. No one relaxes until their safe return.

PAINT THE DAY Capture the life, soul or spirit of Scilly in any chosen medium for the annual “Paint the Day” competition. Artists young and old, new and established, local and visiting are all invited.

MAY DAY WELCOME

FLOWER FIESTA

For generations, primary children have marked the arrival of spring with a special May Day celebration – including maypole dances and the crowning of the May Queen. Everyone flocks to the park in Hugh Town to watch this fairy tale tradition.

In mid-June, the Parish Church hosts a colourful flower festival.

Themed each year, the spectacular displays are full of unusual islandgrown flowers. Tea is served in the pavilion next door, with all monies raised going to the church restoration fund.

FINDING HARRY’S WALLS

FARE THEE WELL

Located at the far end of Porthmellon Beach, Harry’s Walls are the remains of an unfinished artillery fort, started in 1551 by Edward VI’s government. The Garrison was soon chosen as the site of the island’s main fortress, leaving the walls unfinished.

The Scilly Folk Festival every Whitsun Bank Holiday is waived off with an authentic “Farewell Shout”.

Singers, musicians and festival go-ers gather at the Mermaid Inn to sing traditional sea shanties before boarding the boat back to the mainland.

TRESCO Find yourself on the garden isle of Tresco – a sophisticated island escape with a layer of luxury.

resco is Scilly’s second largest island and best known for its amazing sub-tropical Tresco Abbey Garden, a botanical paradise planted amidst the ruins of a Benedictine priory.

Its incredible 20,000 plant species have been collected from as far and wide as New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and South America, and many of them can’t survive anywhere else in the UK. Red squirrels were introduced to the garden in 2013 and now can be seen hopping between branches and wandering along the winding paths. BLOCK HOUSE FUN

STORM RESILIENCE

The Old Blockhouse is a fortification built in 1548 by the government of Edward VI to protect the islands against French and Spanish aggression. These days, its fantastic nooks and crannies serve as a top spot for family hide and seek!

The storms of 1987 and 1990 damaged much of Tresco Abbey Garden – with huge plant loss and decimated shelterbelts.

The garden was restored and re-stocked, and a new entrance was created using wood from the large trees that were brought down.

SCILLY STORYTELLER

SURVIVORS FROM THE SEA

One of Britain’s greatest story tellers, Sam Llewellyn was born on Tresco. Many of his books and poems have been set or influenced by his early life here, including Hell Bay. He also wrote the biography “Emperor Smith: The man who built Scilly”.

Be sure to visit the unique Valhalla collection on Tresco, a collection started in 1840 by Lord Proprietor Augustus Smith of figureheads and decorative ships’ carvings from merchant sailing vessels and early steamships wrecked off the Isles of Scilly.

HIDE AWAY Tresco has three bird hides which provide excellent spots to watch dunlins, plovers and ducks. Visit in spring and autumn to see migratory birds including razorbills, puffins, guillemots and cormorants. The occasional purple herons and even American eagles, have also been spotted.

SMART TRESCO Tresco is a pioneering partner in Scilly’s Smart Islands Programme, which aims to deliver smart solutions for energy, waste, water and sewerage services on the islands. Tresco leads the way for recycling; glass is crushed and used as building aggregate, for example.

DATING THE DAYMARK

TALES OF CHAPEL STONE

Although the blocked up entrance to the Daymark notes the date 1637, this remarkable navigation aid was actually built in 1683.

Initially painted white until 1822, by 1833 it was red. Finally, the colour scheme was settled: bands of red and white.

Locals on Bryher have long fished for Razor clams; the channel between Bryher and Tresco is perfect foraging territory at low tide. Look closely for breathing holes, pour down a little salt and watch for the bubbles as they begin to surface.

Timmy’s Hill was once an excellent vantage point for approaching ships that required local assistance in navigating the dangerous waters.

Look out for the remains of the unroofed shelter and curving wall of boulders at Scilly’s oldest (purpose-built) pilot lookout.

Between Hell Bay Hotel and Gweal Hill you’ll spot Great Pool, formed by people digging for peat.

A leat was cut into it to ensure a regular influx of fresh seawater and to prevent it from turning into a stagnant swamp.

Scilly is well known for attracting birders, but Bryher’s position as the western-most point of the archipelago is a much favoured spot – being the point of first landfall for many a migrating species.

SCHOOL’S OUT There hasn’t been a school on Bryher since 1971 – the site is now the island’s Community Centre. Instead, Bryher’s younger school children travel by boat every week day to and from the primary school base on Tresco.

Beyond the shores of St. Agnes lies nothing but shipwrecks, seabird colonies, rugged islets and a 3,000 mile expanse of Atlantic Ocean.

Indeed, St. Agnes was the scene of one of the worse shipping disasters ever – when four Royal Navy warships including HMS Association were shipwrecked after striking the Western Rocks on 22nd October 1707. Many of the 1,550 men lost at sea that howling night are said to be buried on the cricket field at St. Agnes Green.

A magnet for wildlife, St. Agnes is also the location where Storm petrels and Manx shearwaters have started to breed again for the first time on Scilly in living memory, thanks to the highly successful Seabird Recovery Project. St. Warna, the patron saint of shipwrecks, is said to have arrived on Scilly from Ireland, living

by Warna’s Well. Locals threw pins into the well, making a wish to either steer ships away from treacherous rocks or onto them so that the booty could be plundered.

The merchant ship MV Cita was wrecked off St. Mary’s in 1997 with half its containers offloaded onto the rocks.

One, carrying action men accessories and uniforms, ended up in the waters off St. Agnes where islanders salvaged the contents, as evidenced today in Potbuoys Gallery!

Stepping inside the tiny church on St. Agnes, you’ll come face to face with a remarkable stained-glass window.

Created by local artist, Oriel Hicks, it honours all the brave Scillonians who selflessly put out to sea to help others in danger.

ISLAND FOOD MILE Such is the breadth of local produce on St. Agnes that islander Piers Lewin, a writer, musician and cook, has published a book of recipes, essays and poems – “An Island Food Mile” – celebrating the foods of this remarkably self-sufficient island.

OBADIAH’S BARROW This Neolithic Age grave on Gugh is named after a local farmer, Obadiah Hicks; its entrance aligned to where the mid-winter solstice rises. A 1901 excavation unearthed parts of a male skeleton, cremated ashes and 12 inverted urns.

HICKS’ FAMILY NAME Of the islands’ 85 residents, eight are “Mrs Hicks” – quite a challenge for the local post office, also run by a Mrs Hicks! Dating back some 500 years, the name is prominent on St. Mary’s too. However the families are said to be unrelated.

here can be no doubt that Scilly is a lovely place to visit in the summer, when, if theory is to be believed, the chances of blue skies and warm weather are much higher.

But if you’ve never considered visiting in the early spring – or indeed late autumn – there are plenty of reasons why you should.

I have never visited Scilly in summer, and have no burning desire to, having had such a fabulous time in the shoulder seasons. They offer everything you want, and more, from an island escape, with the added benefit that you only have to share them with half the people.

The weather is as likely to be sunny in April or October as it is in August (and just as likely to rain in summer as it is in March or November).

If you’re really lucky, it might even be warm enough to go out without a coat; and if not, there are plenty of ways to warm up.

Being outdoors is part of the joy of visiting Scilly, and in spring it can be incredibly restorative after the dark days of winter. create a wellness break of your own – quaff the perfumes of the last of the scented narcissi swaying in the fields; listen out for the first cuckoo calls and watch for swooping swallows and seabirds.

I recently joined Bryony and Nick Lishman, who run Adventure Scilly from their home Mincarlo, a handsome B&B overlooking Hugh Town harbour. Both Scillonian by birth, they are passionate about the great outdoors. I spent a pleasant hour of al fresco yoga at Peninnis Head, where Bryony used to play as a child, then donned a wetsuit for a quick, invigorating, dip in the sea at Town Beach. “The best thing is to just go for it and swim,” said Bryony, cheerily, which turned out to be code for “It’s really cold”.

Fortunately, we could see Nick in the garden, preparing very welcome hot chocolates with a Kelly Kettle. Incredibly, he has swum between all the islands, even the choppy waters between St. Mary’s and St. Agnes – he organises the Scilly Swim Challenge events throughout the year.

Truth be told, I’m happier on dry land, and would rather discover St. Mary’s on two wheels. It really is one of the best ways to get around this charmingly tranquil island, from the pristine white beach at Pelistry to the ancient village and burial barrows of Halangy, via the tiny church at Old Town, resting place of former Prime Minister, Lord Harold Wilson.

Walk Scilly is always a personal draw, with the main event in spring (April 3rd to 12th 2019) overlapping with the start of the Easter holidays) and a long weekend in autumn (October 10th to 14th 2019).

It’s a wonderful opportunity to visit the islands on Shanks’s pony, exploring their scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage in the company of a knowledgeable guide who can point out all the little details you might have missed, or fill you in on the historical background. You might even get to do something a little (or even very) special: walk from Tresco to Bryher at low tide, discover the night sky with an astronomer from St. Martin’s or set foot on an uninhabited island (one yet to be crossed off my own bucket list).

After a few days, I guarantee you’ll go home lighter in spirit, with lungs full of sweet, fresh air and a mind full of memories, desperate to book your next off-season trip.

he tide is out at Old Town Bay on the island of St. Mary’s. Late autumn sun glints off the aquamarine sea. It’s a beautiful scene.

But what’s captured my imagination is a cushion starfish that is clamped to the palm of my hand. This little green invertebrate is only two centimetres across, and yet it’s one of the highlights of my stay on Scilly.

So it is that I find myself ankle-deep in water, rock-pooling with Nikki Banfield from the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust. She leads 90-minute rock-pooling experiences throughout the summer. We found the cushion starfish lurking behind a curtain of bladder wrack sea weed. It may be small, but it’s tenacious, gripping my hand as if I too, were a rock. Under another shroud of sea weed, we find a school of shrimps, darting about in the inch-deep, low-tide waters.

We spot the limpets which, I learn, start off life male, and become female as they get older.

And, if sex-change sea-life isn’t excitement enough, there are anemones, sea spiders and innumerable sorts of weed. “We do have some cool stuff here,” says Nikki. “The fantastically clear, unpolluted waters offer up a rich diversity of species.”

Then, under one granite rock, we spot a shore crab. It’s dark green, female and quite young. But, says Nikki, in the future, it will be able to carry 10,000 of its own eggs at any one time. She puts it in my hand, and it is unexpectedly delightful: soft to the touch as it runs sideways across my hands. I let it run back into the pool and, in a cloud of sand, it vanishes from view. After half an hour of this, I’m agog.

Step out a little deeper with a snorkel and mask, and the underwater environment turns full colour. “With less human pressures and >> 47

pollution over the centuries, the variety of sea life is very rich,” says Tom Hooper, chief fisheries officer at IFCA. “Just a few metres from the shore there are jungles of weed and you can see all sorts of animals including sea urchins and crabs. Out in the deeper water you can meet seals, and that’s really exciting.”

Anna (Cawthray) Browne, from Scilly Seal Snorkelling, has been taking people out to snorkel with the Atlantic Grey Seals around the islands for 20 years. “Seeing them under water is magical,” she says. “They are really inquisitive and playful. It’s like being in the sea with an underwater Labrador. They are clearly happy to come close and often it genuinely feels as if we are entertaining them.”

Scilly is vital for Atlantic Grey Seals. There are an estimated 700 that live on the islands – and more come to shelter here during winter, the diverse range of species in the seas around Scilly providing a healthy diet.

Round her neck, Anna wears a little golden seal, and a pendant in the shape of a Bowhead Whale, which she and a friend saw off the coast of St. Martin’s a few years ago. “It was February, and it was so cold but I had to get in and swim near it,” she laughs. “I swam around for 15 minutes and then it swam on. I couldn’t believe it.” Blue-finned tuna have also been seen in the waters around Scilly over the last few years – a feast for Scilly’s dolphins and gannets.

But it’s not just the living that make the waters around Scilly so special, it is also the memory of the dead. There are thousands of shipwrecks around the islands, testament to the many lives lost in the shallow waters in previous centuries. Uncover more about the Seabird Recovery project on St. Agnes & Gugh, introduced in 2012 to reverse the fortunes of burrow breeding Manx shearwaters by rat eradication. The first Manx shearwater chicks to survive in living memory were recorded in 2015, and last year, some 48 Manx shearwater chicks were spotted on the islands.

The bio-security of Scilly is such that native trees like elms thrive here on the islands. Spot them on the woodland walk through Holy Vale or on the treelined track to Trenoweth.

Look out too for Scilly bees and Scilly shrews – unique to the islands.

“The wrecks connect you with the past and make you feel close to other people who have lived through the stormy weather that we get, particularly in the winter,” he says. “The islands are littered with canons. Everywhere you can imagine, there are guns.” He recalls a particular dive – to the wreck of the ocean liner SS Schiller, off the Western Rocks. Here, his brother found a gold thimble that had belonged to a five-year-old girl named Elsa. Her whole family had died when the ship went down. Their bodies were recovered, but Elsa’s never was.

And then there’s Scilly’s connection to the skies – the darkness of the night revealing the heavens. According to a 2016 report by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Isles of Scilly is the darkest district in the UK. On a clear night, the sky is full of stars, which fall down to the sea, because there is little, if any, ambient light to detract from them.

On St. Martin’s, a new observatory is being built to enable locals and visitors alike to see not just constellations, but deep space: all this from two small white domes behind the island’s village hall. It’s unexpected.

What’s also unexpected is everyone’s knowledge of the stars. Walking along the beach, looking for seals, Anna Browne points to the horizon and smiles: “Soon we’ll get our winter stars back,” she says, as if welcoming old friends.

Even on a cloudy night, there’s still much to be seen. I stand on the beach with Charlie Payne from the local astronomy group, COSMOS, and she points between the clouds at stars that I’ve never heard of before, let alone seen: Cygnus, >> 51

Vega, the Northern Cross, the Summer Triangle and, most excitingly, Mars. Behind the clouds, apparently, a meteor shower is in full display.

This cloudy night also reveals something that I don’t get at home: darkness. I can’t see my feet as we walk along.

Then, in the distance, a huge arc of light breaks the darkness. We wonder what could be so huge that it would create that amount of light.

It turns out to be Andrew Walder from SC Salt, riding his quad bike and returning a 12-foot ladder to a neighbour.

On the mainland, one set of headlights wouldn’t be noticeable. Here, the darkness is so comfortingly deep, that you are aware of them.

The next day, I meet up with Andrew to discuss salt.

He has diversified the family farm (which dates back to 1698) by drawing in sea water from English Island Point and panning it in a polytunnel in a neighbouring field. The sun dries the salt, and a small wind turbine keeps the air moving over it. The result is deliciously salty crystals. “It’s something unique to Scilly,” he says. “Having such clear, pollutant-free sea is very important for what we do. I’ve travelled the world in the merchant navy and I have never found anywhere like this.

The only place I’ve seen with clearer seas is the Antarctic.

“It’s required a good deal of looking after to make it like this,” he adds, “and it requires a degree more looking after to make sure it doesn’t get spoiled for future generations.”

And with that, his three children appear from the beach, tousle-haired and sandy footed.

T

he Isles of Scilly won’t stay this beautiful by themselves. Everyone I talk to impresses on me the importance of individual action. All of these actions, whether by locals or visitors, will help ensure that the islands are sustainable communities long into the future.

The islands are low lying and so, more vulnerable to sea-level rise in the wake of climate change.

They are also inhabited by resourceful, inventive people, who use bottle tops in art work and create their own observatories.

So, perhaps it’s no surprise that, with the support of Hitachi Europe, locals are working to make the islands more environmentally robust.

They are thinking “smart”.

The starting point is the Smart Energy project – reducing islanders’ reliance on fossil fuels. The plan is to provide 40% of electricity through renewable energy and to see that at least 40% of vehicles on the islands are low carbon or electric in the next six years.

As you walk around the islands, you’ll spot this in action: solar panels have already been installed on 70 council houses, and at the fire station, the recycling facility and the desalination plant. There’s also a new solar garden by the airport.

The real innovation though will come in the form of a Smart Grid – an Internet of Things (IoT) platform that will manage electricity throughout the islands – balancing supply, storage and demand, allowing the islands to scale up renewable generation and increase their energy independence.

A PLEDGE FOR SCILLY You can make a difference too. A new Scilly Pledge to encourage and recognise responsible visitor behaviour is currently being developed on the islands. cilly is not just about boats, birds and beaches, although of course it has all of those in spades. The archipelago – with its amazing food from porcelain-white crab to salt, native-breed beef and clotted cream – looks after the belly handsomely too. Whether you buy direct from producers, or feast on their bounty in the islands’ restaurants, cafés and pop-ups, Scilly’s food experiences are as magical as its turquoise bays and slowlane atmosphere.

Flying into St. Mary’s? How about a justbaked apple strudel inside a pint-sized harbourfront café that doubles up as a hairdressers?

Wags dub it The Hairy Strudel (its official name is Strudel in Town) and it’s run with German efficiency by Bavaria-born Sabine Schauldolph.

As you watch the bobbing boats, top your strudel with as much clotted cream – from neighbouring St. Agnes – as you dare.

If that’s not different enough, try dining inside the Post Office around a former sorting table that doubles up as a museum. Yes, you

In February 2017, I visited the islands as part of a project about life on small UK islands. A visual story, focused on the lives of islanders, my time was spent meeting the people that make the Isles of Scilly tick.

I had an amazing few days travelling between islands, visiting people and spending time in a truly remarkable place. To have such an amazing visual backdrop, even in the mixed weather of February, was a photographer’s dream.

Although my trip was to illustrate island life, the more people I met the more I was interested. It has created a strong desire to return, to meet more people that call such a fascinating and beautiful place their home. The Isles of Scilly really are the pot of gold at the end of the photographic rainbow.

Travelling to Cornwall or Devon by car? Travelling on the Scillonian ferry offers a unique view of the West Cornwall coast, sailing from Penzance to St. Mary’s. Scillonian departs March–November from Penzance Harbour, usually at 9.15am, with a travel time of 2hrs 45mins.

On arrival into St. Mary’s, you can either collect your luggage from the quay or leave it, if clearly labelled, and a local haulier will deliver to your accommodation for a small fee of £1.40 per bag (2018).

Island hopping is one of Scilly’s greatest pleasures. Whichever island you’re staying on, every day you can simply hop onto a “tripper” boat to explore all the others and discover each of their distinct charms. It’s a great way to get a fuller flavour of island life.

All the islands are really close together – just a 15-25 minute boat ride – so it’s really easy to do a different island each day.

From St. Mary’s, the tripper boats to the other islands are run by St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association. Every evening, they post the following day’s itineraries online @scillyboating and on the various blackboards around the island, including day trips to most (if not all) the off-islands, landings on the uninhabited islands, plus special trips to see Bishop Rock and the wildlife and evening visitislesofscilly.com

If you’re staying on Tresco, Bryher or St. Martin’s, the interisland boating is run by Tresco Boat Services. They post their schedules and special excursions online @stagnesboating and @trescoboatservices and also on the noticeboards close to the quay and around the islands.

And if the scheduled services doesn’t suit, or you simply want a boat at a special time or to a special place, this can nearly always be arranged (tides and weather permitting!).

Walking is the way to go on all the “off islands”, although on Tresco and St. Mary’s you also can hire bikes and buggies. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available on all islands.

Additionally on St. Mary’s, there’s a Community Bus that takes a circular route around the island several times a day, a dedicated 70-minute tour and private taxis.

ACCESSIBLE SCILLY For visitors to the Isles of Scilly with limited mobility, and/or for those with young children, there are a range of services and facilities available.

Most people get around the islands on foot, but if that's not an option for you or one of your party, we recommend that you look at, and book, alternative options in advance of your holiday. You can hire pushbikes (with trailers) and golf buggies (for those aged 25-75 years; driving licences required) on St. Mary's and Tresco. There are also a number of private hire vehicles on St. Mary's, a Community Bus and a “Buzza Bus” on St. Mary's (for those registered to use it via Cornwall's Age Concern).

of concrete roads and unmade roads that are not suitable for public transport. They are only accessible by boat and getting on and off can be tricky with several steps. (The boatmen are lovely though, and will always assist where necessary.)

Pushchairs and lighter standard wheelchairs can be lifted onto boats – electric wheelchairs would be a challenge.
