Asbestos removal from landmark listed building in central London. About the project:

Our services:

We were appointed by BAM to carry out a major ‘cut and carve’ package on this high profile scheme within central London. Asbestos was present in various forms throughout the building, but predominantly as hardset asbestos insulation within the risers serving the central core, also as an insulation board lining to the main lift shaft. Additionally, isolated incidences of notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos were identified throughout the building that required removal.

Project challenges: The asbestos removal operation had to be completed in the midst of a very busy construction site. The works needed to be planned meticulously through close liaison with the demolition teams, ensuring that work areas were clearly designated and not affected by the ongoing and adjacent demolition process. Transit routes had to be kept clear and work areas were often very restricted.

Project challenges:

Emergency Dangerous Structures

The asbestos insulation board risers were located within the central core of each flat. The surrounding masonry walls and services had to be carefully removed, so as not to disturb the asbestos.

Temporary Works

A timber framed polythene tented enclosure was constructed around each section of riser, necessitating the construction of approximately 100 separate enclosures. With the lifts having previously been decommissioned, all plant, equipment and waste had to be manually transferred between work areas.

Piling Services

Following a refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey, Deconstruct were appointed to remove all known asbestos from throughout the tower. The tower had stood empty for a considerable amount of time, so operatives were faced with significant amounts of pigeon guano as well as damp and mould infestation. Much of the asbestos boarding had been damaged and the surrounding areas had to be decontaminated before work to remove the boarding could commence. All power within the building had been isolated so it was necessary for generators to be used.

McBains Cooper Shepherds Bush, London Deconstruct UK Ltd February 2012 Construction

Removal of various asbestos containing materials from the Shepherds Bush Pavilion. About the project:

Our services:

The Shepherds Bush Pavilion has been acquired for development into a hotel. In advance of the demolition phase of the scheme, Deconstruct were appointed to remove all known asbestos containing materials from the building. A refurbishment and demolition survey identified that asbestos was present in a variety of forms including sprayed coatings, pipe insulation and boarding. Our teams worked systematically through the building, clearing the asbestos identified within the survey report.

Deconstruction Services

Project challenges: Due to the high ceiling levels within the former cinema areas, special consideration has been required to facilitate access. Many areas of the building have been vacant for a number of years and pigeon infestation is significant. Our operatives have had to clear large areas of pigeon guano in advance of the asbestos removal. The majority of services have long since been decommissioned and we have had to introduce temporary power and lighting to facilitate our works.

Blenheim House Construction St Anne’s Court, London W1 Deconstruct UK Ltd September 2011 Construction

Removal of asbestos containing materials from former recording studios, prior to conversion into a hotel. About the project: Deconstruct were contracted to demolish the adjoining office building at Carlisle Street and strip the St Anne’s Court building back to shell and core. Asbestos was present throughout both properties and had to be completely removed prior to demolition and strip out. The majority of the asbestos was asbestos insulation board (AIB) located behind the acoustic panelling within the basement recording studios. Project challenges: With the asbestos insulation board being located behind the acoustic panelling, it was necessary to incorporate the removal of the panelling within the asbestos removal operation. Deconstruct asbestos removal teams had to deconstruct 6 layers of acoustic boarding and panelling to access and remove the asbestos. The fixings and fittings that secured the acoustic panelling, passed through the asbestos and had to be carefully removed, to avoid uncontrolled damage to the asbestos. A considerable amount of contaminated waste was generated from these works. The waste needed to be carefully transferred from the basement working area, to ground floor

level, for collection on a ‘wait and load’ basis. The waste transfer process was was a very labour intensive operation. Our services: Deconstruction Services

Ayerst Environmental Ltd Balfour Beatty plc Charecroft Estate, Shepherds Bush, London Deconstruct UK Ltd May 2011 Construction (Residential)

Removal of asbestos containing materials from occupied high rise residential buildings in Shepherds Bush, London. About the project: Over the course of 6 months Deconstruct teams were engaged in the removal of asbestos insulation board, duct cladding and wall panels throughout the residential tower blocks at the Charecroft Estate. The cladding and panelling was typically located in kitchens and hallways, which meant that residents had to leave their properties for the day to enable tented enclosures to be constructed. Enclosures were formed, asbestos removed, enclosures tested and site cleared each day to allow the resident to return to a safe environment that same day. Project challenges: The work was undertaken inside occupied flats containing resident’s personal property so our works had to be carried out in a neat and tidy manner, ensuring that no damage was caused. Our trusted teams of Operatives prepared the work areas with due consideration for the decoration within the properties. The asbestos removal operation had to be completed to exacting standards as there could be no risk of asbestos contamination into the property.

With full time attendance by the appointed asbestos consultant to provide reassurance that the works were carried out safely, the work areas were thoroughly checked upon completion before being cleared in good time for the resident to return home.
