“I have attended a few seminars on Estate Planning, and I was aware that I needed to start this process sooner than later. I was fortunate to attend an Estate Planning seminar presented by Suren Adams. I was very impressed with her professionalism, her impeccable knowledge of the subject matter, and the ability to present the information in an understandable language. Suren’s noteworthy credentials speak for themselves, and her service costs are comparable to others in the area. I would highly recommend her service to anyone who is interested in the Estate Planning process. I guarantee that once you attend Suren’s seminar, you will not delay in starting the process today!”

Through the process of life, insurance whether in the form of home, life, or auto is integral to cementing the financial security and stability for both you and your loved ones. However, navigating the terms associated with the insurance world can be confusing without the proper guide.
Cliff Johnson, a State Farm agent, based out of Millersville, MD. understands the complexities associated with coverage for new insurers, and therefore has made education a pillar in his approach when helping all customers. Having served the DMV area for 8 years and running, Johnson has found a balance in assisting clients to find the most suitable policies that cover both their personal and business needs.
Article by: Donovan McNeal
Photos by: Trans4mation Photography
“Our main focus when a client comes to our office is to better understand what brought them to our office and what their need is.”
After this introductory conversation, Johnson goes through the process of explaining the broad selection of insurance options his agency offers and how they uniquely benefit the individual customer.
Some of these options include homeowners, auto, renters, life and health insurance. In addition they have coverage related to fidelity bonds and surety bonds.
During the onboarding process, depending on how long the coverage lasts, it ranges from 6 months or 1 year intervals. In the first 30 days, when a customer is initially onboarded, the team goes over all the coverages so that they understand everything.
After their policy issues, which typically takes about 2 weeks, Johnson personally meets with the customers over the next 30 days to gauge how their experience was with the team member and to address any unanswered questions they may have.
Later in the process, Johnson and the team meet with customers at the 1 year mark and 6 month mark to have a “simple conversation” that discusses questions such as “Where are you today with the current coverage that you have? Do you feel as though you have adequate coverage? Do you feel as though your risks are being managed effectively? Is there anything we can do to help your experience here?”
From operating in Maryland close to a decade, Johnson has developed an understanding of what makes his community distinct and the role his agency plays in helping people there.
“The DMV offers a very diverse community of customers. Ethically, economically and culturally. It is our mission in our agency to enable the individuals and businesses to manage their financial risks, and help them secure their wealth to build their financial futures.”
To accommodate the large Spanish speaking population of Maryland, the agency has a Spanish speaking team member to ensure each client’s needs are met.
Additionally, based on where clients fall economically the team works to find the plan that works best for them.
Johnson said their mission could be simplified as, “Our desire to improve the lives of others.”
In cultivating a bond with each client, Johnson and his team he marked as “highly professional licensed individuals” strive not only to lead by example in their professional affiliation, but in the community as well. Johnson himself exemplifies this by teaching financial literacy to both churches and community organizations.
Outside of the business, the agency works to forge genuine connections with their customers by acknowledging changes in their lives.
“If it’s the birth of new children we send out cards. If it’s the loss of a loved one we send out sympathy cards. And we celebrate customers. If it’s their children or even themselves who graduate college, or something in their life has happened we reach out at that point as well.”
This friendly demeanor is not new to Johnson as his desire to make a difference dates back to his early days in insurance.
“There was this need I had to make an impact, I just didn’t know what it was.”
Before working at State Farm he talked about how he spoke with a spokesperson at a convention who informed him about the opportunity to work for the company. At the time he attempted to contact them over phone but received no response.
As he reached a transitional point in his career, and was ready to explore new opportunities, State Farm called back with the opportunity he was looking for. Johnson attributed this to divine intervention, and his belief that “things happen when they are supposed to happen.”
“This was an opportunity for me to really be closer to the customer where I can actually spend time and make a difference in their lives.”
He continued, “Especially in communities that are underserved.”
From start to finish Johnson has stood by this mission and to serve his community and plans to continue into it the future,
“My agency is truly prepared to help individuals manage their financial risk and to build the wealth and secure the future that they desire for themselves. They can expect to have exceptional customer service at all levels in my office!”
Prince George’s County’s Premier Destination for Healing and Relief
When it comes to healing, wellness, and finding true relief from the aches, pains, and stresses of everyday life, there’s one name that stands out in Prince George’s County and across the DMV: Ben Atanga, better known as Ben the Baptist. As the visionary founder of The Stretch Loft, Ben has redefined how the community approaches wellness by providing transformative solutions that go beyond traditional methods like chiropractic care, physical therapy, and massage.
With two thriving locations in Prince George’s County, The Stretch Loft has become the go-to destination for those seeking relief from muscular aches, stress, and tension. But this isn’t just any wellness studio. Ben the Baptist and his handpicked team of about 10 highly skilled therapists offer something different—something better. Why The Stretch Loft Stands Above the Rest
Many people don’t realize that the discomfort and tension they carry are often the results of deeprooted, stored energy from life’s experiences. At The Stretch Loft, the focus isn’t just on temporary fixes; it’s about releasing those underlying issues for good. Unlike standard massages or chiropractic sessions,
the specialized stretch therapy at The Stretch Loft targets the root causes of pain and tension, delivering immediate relief that lasts.
“Our bodies hold onto tension and energy from everything we go through. Stretch therapy is about letting go—releasing what no longer serves us,” says Ben. “We’re here to guide our clients through that process.”
And the results speak for themselves. Clients often experience significant relief after just one session, with many opting to continue their healing journey through The Stretch Loft’s popular membership programs. Multi-Talented Team Committed to Excellence
The Stretch Loft’s reputation for excellence comes not just from Ben’s leadership but also from the A1 practitioners who make the magic happen daily. Between the two locations, Ben employs a diverse and multi-talented team that includes:
• Occupational Therapists
• Massage Therapists
• Personal Trainers
• Chiropractors
• Physical Therapists

This unique blend of expertise ensures that clients receive comprehensive care tailored to their specific needs. It’s no wonder The Stretch Loft has become a pillar of healing in Prince George’s County, serving the DMV community for the past five years.
THE STRETCH LOFT ACADEMY: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF STRETCH THERAPY
Ben’s mission for healing didn’t stop with The Stretch Loft. In 2021, he founded the Stretch Loft Academy, an institution dedicated to training the next generation of stretch therapy professionals. Since its inception, the academy has trained and certified over 400 students, many of whom are now practicing nationwide.
Through the academy, Ben the Baptist has expanded his vision, ensuring that the healing power of stretch therapy reaches communities far beyond the DMV. The success of the academy is a testament to The Stretch Loft’s trusted methodologies and the growing demand for this innovative approach to wellness.
NOW FRANCHISING: HEALING, NATIONWIDE
What started as a local haven for healing has grown into a national opportunity. The Stretch Loft is now franchising, offering aspiring entrepreneurs across the country the chance to bring this transformative wellness experience to their communities.
“The demand for what we do here is nationwide,” says Ben. “We’re offering franchise opportunities so that anyone passionate about healing and wellness can be part of this movement.”
With a proven business model, a respected brand, and a comprehensive training program through the Stretch Loft Academy, franchise owners are set up for success from day one.
MORE THAN A STUDIO—AN EXPERIENCE
Clients who walk into The Stretch Loft quickly realize that this isn’t just a place to stretch—it’s an experience. The studio’s warm atmosphere, impeccable cleanliness,
and high level of customer service create an environment where healing can truly happen.
Every detail, from the welcoming staff to the calming aesthetics, is designed to make clients feel at ease. And with immediate relief being a common outcome after just one session, it’s no surprise that most clients become loyal members.
CONNECT WITH BEN THE BAPTIST AND THE STRETCH LOFT
For those who want to get an inside look at what makes The Stretch Loft so special, Ben invites you to join the 70,000+ followers on Instagram and watch transformative sessions on their growing YouTube channel.
“Social media has given us a platform to show people the power of what we do. If you’ve never experienced stretch therapy, our videos and content will open your eyes,” says Ben.

ANJOLENE WHALEY Reflects on Her Journey and the Future of Express Brokers REALTY
Article by Anijah Franklin, Photos by Tracey Connor
What started as a suggestion from her husband led Anjolene Whaley to a career in real estate for more than 30 years.
She’s a broker for Express Brokers Realty, a multifaceted Black-owned agency with a team of professionals boasting more than 45 years of combined real estate experience in D.C. and Maryland.
Before the business became what it is today, Robert E. Whaley, Whaley’s husband, and the late Horace Thompson, her former realty manager, met with Whaley in her basement. To her surprise, they signed a lease for the building and the rest is history.
At the time, she worked as a program control lead for the Computer Sciences Corporation in the early 2000s, and only worked part-time as a real estate agent. But after being laid off in 2013, she passed the broker exam and said she never looked back.
“I just get enjoyment seeing people when they go to settle, purchase their first or second home, or when they go to sell their home,” she said.
Express Brokers Realty offers various services to its clientele. Their services include property management, home warranty, title company, REO (real estate-owned) management, financing and short sales.
To help their clients with one of the most important financial decisions of their lives, they implement multi-level marketing strategies using their extensive access to information about—but not limited—to schools, populations, recreation, entertainment, home values, growth potential and surrounding areas.
To Whaley, both their clientele and the company’s team environment are priorities. She likes the size of their team and the environment they’ve created.
“I keep my business small—a boutique—because my priority as a broker is I want my agents to be able to come to me,” Whaley said.
Her leadership style reflects the lessons she’s learned from her previous experiences.
“I learned things from working at a small business. I try to have a family type of environment,” she said. “So they can have that support.”
Speaking of family, she has two sons, Robert Whaley Jr. and Joshua. Robert is also a member of Express Brokers Realty’s team.
“He’s one of my top agents and he learned from me because even when he was small, he used to go with me to all the showings,” his mother said.
At just 18 years old, he became an agent under her and used real estate to pay for his college education.
Just like her, her son Joshua has Crouzon syndrome—a rare genetic disorder that affects the development of the skull and facial bones. In addition to Crouzon syndrome, he was born with autism and a learning disability. She recalled balancing doctor appointments, motherhood and her career.
“That was a very stressful time for me, working at Corporate. [Joshua] had a lot of surgeries when he was young, he was at Georgetown Hospital,” she said. “I would go to the hospital in the daytime and then work at night.”
Whaley said taking on real estate full-time relieved scheduling issues that previously made managing Joshua’s appointments difficult.
Despite the hard times, she said things ultimately fell into place.
The business even remained successful during the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic, which were hard times for small businesses and the U.S. economy.
Whaley emphasized that her prior experiences helped her succeed.
“I had the accounting background, so it was easier for me to look at the financials. I worked in accounting and small government contracting and watched how small business owners [ran] things and I think that’s what really helped me to succeed now, because I had that experience,” she explained.
Another part of the company is Express Brokers Academy, a program in collaboration with the CE Shop, that offers free pre-licensing classes to aid students in sitting for the Maryland Real Estate
Salesperson Exam. Since January 2025, it has offered online courses too.
Whaley also has a home inspection business, Home Team Inspection Team. The team serves Prince George’s County and other surrounding areas.
“We also have a home improvement license for this year, so I have different areas to generate revenue,” Whaley said about the inspection company.
Since the pandemic, she’s had plans to expand the business to another location and she’s been a member of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses—an entrepreneurship program, or as Whaley calls it 10KSB.
“Right now our goal is to expand to the lower Eastern Shore [of Maryland],” she said.
As she looks ahead to expanding her business, she sees it as more than just growth; it’s a return to her roots. The place she’s from may soon be the home to the next chapter of Express Brokers Realty.
NATIONAL CARPET & FLOORING
Article by Camiryn Stepteau, Photo by Trans4mation Photography
For Chad Houck, owner of National Carpet & Flooring, it’s all about durability, comfort and style when it comes to choosing the right flooring.
Houck began his journey with the flooring company in 2020 under the mentorship of National Carpet & Flooring founder, Wesley Sherman. With a background in architecture, he brings a diverse set of expertise and perspective to the flooring industry.
After a few years of learning under Sherman, Houck now runs the flooring company and has been steadily growing it ever since, maintaining the founder’s mission of delivering excellent customer service and fair pricing.
“We just give our best price to every customer every day. If the manufacturers put something on sale to me, then it goes on sale to all our customers,” he says. “Otherwise, we are already
operating it at the lowest price that we can sell that material for.”
The company’s dedication to high-quality customer service is one of the many things that sets it apart from its competitors. National Carpet & Flooring makes it a priority to help customers find and understand what’s right for their space, not just sell them a product. Whether a customer has kids or pets, they can trust that their flooring will be installed with accuracy and care.
“I’m driven to make sure the homeowner gets what they need,” Houck expresses.
The store offers a vast range of products, including carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, laminate and engineered wood. The company also offers additional products such as ceramic tile making sure there are options for every customer no matter their budget or taste.
“We’re set up to basically handle all of your flooring needs,” Houck says.
Luxury vinyl flooring has become a staple for the store, known for its durability and water resistance, great for basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. Houck is also actively expanding the company’s flooring options, such as looking to introduce a new hybrid product that has a resin-based core, avoiding PVC.
“They’re hypoallergenic,” Houck says. “And you’re never going to have any issue with it.”
Another addition Houck and his team are looking forward to is a new cutting-edge hardwood product that blends the durability of laminate flooring and traditional hardwood aesthetics.
“Its core is almost the consistency of flour, so it’s wood, but it’s super fine,” he explains.
“And when they compress that together with an actual hardwood layer on the surface. It becomes unbelievably durable, almost impossible to dent.”
National Carpet and Flooring is also known for its expert installation, offering teams with years worth of expertise in both carpet and hard surfaces. From living rooms to office spaces, the company aims to make customers happy with flooring styles that are timeless, comfortable and of the best quality.
Houck and his team always go the extra mile to ensure all their products are up to standard, making sure to vet out products before selling to customers.
“We’ve aligned ourselves with a couple of installers here that are masters at that trade,” Houck says with pride. “They’ve got years of experience doing it.”
As National Carpet & Flooring continues to expand and flourish, Houck and his team are committed to providing their customers with the best styles and fit for them, whether it be their home or business.

Agape Church Article
Artcile by: Donovan McNeal
Photos by: Tracey Connor
In the Bible, the Greek word “Agape” means to have unconditional love for anyone you meet, and the National Agape Gift Bag and Sock Ministry’s mission is to spread this message. Alternatively known as the 21st Century Church of Christ, Agape is a ministry founded by Pastor John McCain and based out of Suitland, MD. They also have partners in Georgia, Washington, D.C., New York, Maryland and Virginia. Additionally, they have ambassadors in Kenya who distribute bibles there.
The ministry’s main service is charity for those in need. Initially, they primarily served the homeless,
but they have now transitioned to providing service to everyone. Janice Euell, the Vice President of Agape, spoke about Pastor McCain’s original vision. “We started, as Pastor John mentioned, because he had a vision for homeless services that would benefit them primarily, but then we realized for a person not to be homeless, that we need to empower them to be better.”
They continued to speak on the services they provide. According to Pastor John, “We call them Agape gift bags, which are little bags of joy,” said Pastor John. These Agape bags contain socks, toiletries, gloves, hats, and anything that is useful
or a basic need for people. At their Suitland water tower distribution center, where members of the congregation meet, they also provide blankets, food and water. They have distributed more than 12,000 items reaching over 1,200 people.
The volunteers are known as the “Agape Warriors.” Euell said this about their work, “We’re going against all this craziness and we’re going to learn how to work together to help each other andlearn how to destress ourselves so that we can do the business in the morning.”
Outside of the bags, the ministry also provides spiritual and mental health services by Vaughn Howard, graduate of Bowie State University, who is the vice-president of the board. “Theneed is deep, and when I say the need that means
anything you need. If you need a friend [we] will be there. Some of them come in because they want to talk to us, and because pastor [John] will pray for them.”
Eventually, they want to become a “one-stop shop” for anything the community seek. They use an intake form for identifying services to improve the quality of life for the community.
The Ministry has also collaborated with other charity organizations to help the Suitland community for example Easter Seals of DC, MD, and VA, Martha’s Table of DC and the Kevin Durant Foundation (College Track program) at the Kevin Durant Center to host a back-to-school event. At this event, they were able to distribute 1000 book bags and back to school supplies.
Despite all that Agape has provided to the Suitland community they still lack funding. McCain and Euell encourage everyone to donate where they can to spread that unconditional love across all 50 states. In the holiday they strongly encourage anyone who may not be able to connect with their family to join them at the water tower. “We’re here for you. So, anybody that you can tell wherever you are, you tell them where we are and tell them that we’re standing there with open arms for them to come.” Visit www.21ccoc.org or www.agapeministry.info to donate to this worthy tax-deductible cause or contact us at 202-313-1500.
Owen Gardner NuPathway Article
Article by Christian Marshal
How
Owen Gardner Created NuPathway, a Holistic primary care center growing in Bowie Maryland
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Owen Gardner created Nu Pathway Primary Care and Medspa to provide personalized and holistic care to those in the local area while addressing the healthcare industry’s lack of diversity at its highest levels.
After working as the senior vice president of operations for a long-term care company, Gardner’s inspiration for creating Nu Pathway drew from two sources. The first was his longing to provide a service that allowed him to control the outcome and make an impact on people’s lives, a passion that was inspired by his previous pro bono work with veterans. The second came from his desire to avoid microaggressions and systematic
challenges he had faced working in the healthcare system and wanting to create a better product for people who looked like himself.
Reflecting on his motivation to create Nu Pathway, Gardner said, “Nu Pathway was a combination of wanting to be able to change the narrative for myself as well as for others
and the entrepreneurial spirit of wanting to do something significant in healthcare.”
Gardner’s original vision for Nu Pathway was for it to serve as a primary care center, but he quickly realized the need to resolve their patient’s mental and psychological issues that were linked to their patients’ immediate physical concerns.
This realization led to Nu Pathways’ evolution into what the healthcare center is today, a wellness center that seeks to cure people’s minds, bodies, and souls.
“Initially, we focused on primary care and weight loss but realized psychological issues needed addressing too. So, we added psych services, which improved outcomes”. Said Gardner “Over time, we integrated red light therapy and body contouring, transitioning into full aesthetics. Now, we focus on mind, body, and soul—addressing mental and physical health while helping clients look and feel their best”.
The expansion of services provided by NuPathway goes hand in hand with the company’s philosophy, which seeks to care for patients in all phases of life with a strategy that prioritizes personal change over pharmaceuticals.
“We try to take the approach of not being a hundred percent pharmaceutical but trying to be more of a combination of both Eastern and Western medicine.” Gardner explained, “We take theapproach of fewer medications and more helping you to fix your overall self, more like a lifestyle coach.”
To fulfill all of these different fields and services, Garder has combined his wealth of experience working as an executive in the healthcare sector with a small but experienced team of doctors and physicians who align with Nu Pathways’ holistic philosophy.
“We’ve built our team around wellness, so every member of our team has somewhat of an understanding of our concepts of holistic medicine and making man whole holistically,” said Gardner.
Nu Pathways’ small staff of 10-15 physicians is a strength of the healthcare center. It allows the center to maintain its personal touch, a quality that Gardner feels is vital to the service he wants to provide.
“It built a lot of strength for our company because you get the personal touch; you also get the individual. We know all of our patients and our clients, and then everyone can actually understand and work the vision that we have,” said Gardner. Nu Pathway’s unique and personal approach has led to plenty of success stories.
“We’ve had some great success stories,” said Gardner. “People who were struggling with their mental health issues, people who were struggling with their physical issues from a physical perspective, we’ve been able to help them from the inside out, help them internally, and then help them get the look that they wanted.” With the great success Nu Pathway has experienced in its short time open, Gardner still acknowledges the struggles of running his own small business.
“One of the challenges is the long hours of work to ensure everyone gets the experience they deserve.” The other challenge is utilizing many personal resources to make that dream happen. So it takes a lot of sacrifice and time to make the vision a reality.”
Despite the small challenges, Gardner is optimistic about the future of Nu Pathway as it looks to improve as a business without straying from the principles that made it successful.
“We don’t want to grow so large that we’re turning folks away because of resources, but we’re trying to grow large enough where we have the resources to provide more proven owner services as well. And so our goal is to grow, grow, and be the premier service in the DMV”.
As Nu Pathway moves into 2025, Gardner wants patients to be left with a simple message if they are considering coming to Nu Pathway.“We care about each individual, and we’re an organization that personalizes every patient, gives each patient their own specialized personal care, and you get that family feel when you come to NuPathway”.
