REMODELING PROJECTS that will Boost Your Home Value

According to the real estate website Redfin, in January of 2024, home prices were up 7.2% compared to last year, selling for a median price of $483 thousand. On average, homes in Bowie sell after 39 days on the market compared to 51 days last year. To gain insight into how homeowners can achieve a favorable return on investment(ROI) through home improvement projects, we interviewed a business owner dedicated to ensuring homeowners undertake the appropriate remodeling projects to maximize their returns. In this article, we dive into Entrepreneur Bobby Alexander’s road to home improvement and how he recommends homeowners get the most bang for their buck on their homes.

Meet the Owner and the Business

Bobby Alexander was born in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Tacoma and Fort Lewis. In addition to being in the military for a few years, Mr.Alexander moved to Metro-Atlanta and Kansas City before finally making his way to the DMV ten years ago. He first worked in the apartment industry for years as a maintenance worker, taking care of properties for different management companies. However, 12 years ago, Mr.Alexander began doing remodeling work on the side for private homeowners while still working his day job for extra money. It slowly turned into a business as Mr.Alexander started

12 | March/April 2024

developing a client base and getting more tools, eventually giving him the means to quit his day job. This opportunity led to the birth of “B. Alexander’s Home Improvement” about three years ago. In 2024, Mr.Alexander is looking to hire new employees as the business continues to grow.

Navigating what projects to choose

There are a number of projects homeowners may want to start in order to increase the value of their home. For those that don’t know where to start Mr.Alexander has three things that he thinks are in the ballpark of where homeowners should begin. “Depending on if your home has bad or old plumbing, or wiring that is in bad shape, focusing on your electrical and plumbing fixtures will give you a good start to increasing the value of your home,” Mr.Alexander said. “In addition, aesthetically, bathroom and kitchen remodels dealing with anything cosmetic like the need for painting, drywall, or style updates can also add to the value of your home,” Mr.Alexander explained. Mr.Alexander made it clear that the basics of any house are just as important to keep up to date as the styling and appearance of a home.

Mistakes to Avoid

When homeowners take on these remodeling projects, there are a few mistakes that they can run into during the process. One mistake often stems from homeowners falling victim to fancy remodeling trends. “Homeowners add in these high-end appliances or electronic features that are great, but they don’t match what’s in the surrounding neighborhood. This sometimes makes homebuyers not interested in the price homeowners are trying to sell at due to the home being upgraded more than the rest of the neighborhood. Another issue that can arise is when homeowners try to manage their own remodeling projects. “If people want to save on expenses that’s fine, but they don’t usually know how things work when contracting and taking on large-scale remodels, which can cause delays, extra costs, or cause things to be done out of order,” Mr.Alexander said. To negate this issue, Mr.Alexander definitely thinks it’s worth your while to allow professionals to handle the organization and coordination of larger projects. Minimizing Remodeling Costs Homeowners not accounting for unanticipated costs that could come with the projects is something that can occur to those who don’t know much about estimating costs. “In a lot of older homes, people run into problems like wanting to replace a faucet fixture in the kitchen, but it’s been there for so long it causes you to replace something else which could eventually cascade into replacing some of the plumbing for a project they assumed would be simple,” explained Mr.Alexander. This can cause homeowners unanticipated stress due to footing a larger bill than they assumed they would have to. In order to negate this issue, Mr.Alexander finds it extremely important

for homeowners to leave room for error within their budgets. “A simple rule of thumb is for homeowners to add 25% to whatever their budget is so there is room for unexpected costs. Always anticipate something going wrong because the larger the project the more likely something will go wrong which often is just due to the age of the home,” Mr.Alexander said. Conclusion As the housing market continues to fluctuate there are a few things homeowners can do to aim for a higher ROI. Mr. Alexander has luckily given several insights and tricks throughout this article. His business B. Alexander’s Home Improvement offers services that range from handyman services, to wall mounting, fixture installation, window treatments, fence and deck staining/painting, and furniture assembly.

“When it comes to importance, I’d rate energy-efficient upgrades, and exterior remodeling first with kitchen and bathroom remodeling following behind,” Mr.Alexander said. Whether you’re taking on a remodeling project yourself or hiring a professional to do it, it’s important to know which aspects best boost your home value.

Achieving Your American Dream Ways for Millennials to Save Money for the FUTURE

March/April 2024 | 15

Even though millennials are the most diverse and best-educated generation of Americans, as the Pew Research Center reports, many are having difficulty finding their place in the workforce and buying homes. For some, the American Dream of having a beautiful wedding and owning a home is fading as a result of the US economy and a growing fear of divorce. Since the first millennial was born in 1981, the rate of inflation in the US has increased by 235%, and many millennials are hopeless.

Candace Spencer is a recently engaged millennial looking to buy a house in Maryland. Like many other millennials, Spencer says navigating through this next step of adulthood is stressful and difficult. “Every time I think we get to a good place, the rug kind of gets pulled from under me,” she says. Despite her frustrations, Spencer and her partner continue to make plans for their future in hopes of completing their American Dream.

If you are beginning to save for your own American Dream or simply don’t know where to start, here are some tips that can help you along your journey:

REDUCE YOUR DEBT

CREATE A BUDGET

No one likes the word ‘budget,’ but for that American Dream, you have to start somewhere. Financial advisor, Sharon Lewis says “Budgeting is not necessarily restriction. It’s having a plan.” When creating your budget, plan out specifics about your future wedding or new home. What type of cake and dress designer do you want to use? How many bedrooms do you need? What about a backyard for your future children? Having answers to these questions will assist you in further researching your ultimate vision, which will help you save money accordingly. You should create this budget with your partner, and having a joint budget and bank account can help you both track your progress towards your goals. Lewis also says forming a budget will help you better understand “the money that comes in and the money that goes out.” Evaluating this ensures you know what to expect for a down payment or loan in the future. Budgeting also helps to visualize ways to condense your spending.

After establishing your goal, the next step, according to Lewis, is coming up with ways to reduce your existing debt. Before buying a house or getting married, regulating your debt-to-income ratio will improve your chances of lower interest rates and approval for loans. The millennial generation accounts for $4 trillion of US household debt, reports CBS. Student loans and medical bills can become exhausting, but there are ways to accelerate your debt payoff. “You didn’t get into debt overnight. I don’t expect people to get out of it overnight,” Lewis says. She also urges couples to speak with a financial professional who can curate specific plans for them and their family to reduce debt and increase their savings rate.

GET CREATIVE

1 2 3

Another great way to add more money to your savings is to pick up a side hustle. Use your favorite hobby to your advantage. Are you a painter? Or do you love to make jewelry? Amazon and Etsy are some of the

16 | March/April 2024

many websites where you can sell your products to the public nationwide. Even if you do not have a niche skill, you can still use the internet to your advantage. As a millennial, you are more than likely comfortable with technology. And in a post-pandemic age, countless online jobs can bring extra money your way. From online tutoring to social media, there are opportunities to work conveniently. Make it work for you, and do not be afraid to put your talents on display.

REDUCE DAY-TO-DAY SPENDING

Now this is a hard one to do. We indulge in the luxury of Doordash and name-brand shopping, but these small expenses can quickly add up. The average American spends $1500 on food delivery services, according to upgradedpoints.com. Although deleting a food service app from your phone will not exactly equate to a down payment for a house, you will surely see a difference in

your monthly bank statements. Sometimes, to meet your goal, you have to sacrifice unnecessary spending. Instead of dining at a fancy restaurant, try to recreate your favorite restaurant meal at home. Before you get lost in an online shopping spree, go through your closet and find ways to creatively spruce up your look. Remember, this is temporary. You can have all the food delivery you want at your new address.

STAY THE COURSE

5

In today’s society, Lewis says the biggest problem is that people are “afraid” to act given the state of the economy, but she says procrastination is “the most costly” of mistakes that you can make with your money. “There’s no such thing as ‘the perfect time.’ The perfect time to invest or buy a home was twenty years ago,” she says. Of course, it is natural to worry about the future, but do not let the stresses of today’s world diminish your dreams. 4

March/April 2024 | 17

Lindsay Dweyer, broker and owner of City Chic Real Estate, also encourages millennial couples not to get discouraged. As a millennial herself, Dweyer understands the hardships her clients face. Despite the challenges of the housing market, she insists that “you will always find the right house for you” if you are patient and realistic.

Staying the course is the most important tip to remember. Keep your dream ahead of you, and come up with a plan. Seeing a financial advisor is a great tool to make sure you are on track financially to accomplish your long-term goals. Start saving today to create your own slice of American pie for tomorrow. Your dream is more obtainable than you realize. You just have to start somewhere.

Article by Lauryn Forbes | Photography by Tracey Marlene

With roots outside of St. Louis, McAuliffe Chiropractic Office was founded in 1923. 100 years later, the McAuliffe family continues to offer services to clients and families in all walks of life.

In Laurel, Maryland, the second branch of McAuliffe Chiropractic Office has been a pillar of health and wellness for families since 1988, started by Dr. Terence McAuliffe. Beginning in 2023, his son Terence McAuliffe Jr. and his wife Lisa McAuliffe have taken over, continuing this family legacy. “We really do actually like keep it in the family,” Terence shares. While him and his wife are now the current owners, Dr. Terence McAuliffe Sr. still works in the office, as well as his wife.

For over a 30 years, McAuliffe Chiropractic Office has provided comprehensive chiropractic care to Laurel and its surrounding communities. They are a family-based practice, with Terence stating that their “mission or goal is to take care of entire families. So our doctors work with everything from newborns to pregnant moms, to teenagers, sports injuries, car

accidents, kind of everything in between. So it’s kind of our philosophy, our family taking care of other people’s families”.

Though their services are widely varied, they specialize in wellness care, striving to help their patients lead pain-free lives without resorting to excessive medications or surgery. Terence notes that the doctors of their practice “have always taken extra certifications and trainings, to make sure that we can handle the entire family and treat them with the best care possible”. With this, patients can rest assured that all concerns will be taken care of by professionals that are not only knowledgeable, but committed to the health of their entire family unit.

Where McAuliffe Chiropractic Office differs from others in the field is their commitment to patient convenience. They understand the demands of modern life and have designed their practice to accommodate busy families. Terence elaborates, “We really pride ourselves on having flexible appointments and flexible hours. We’re here before most people start their days

20 | March/April 2024

and here after most people are done with work. Our thing is, you know, everyone should feel like they have time for their health care”.

Chiropractic care is often misunderstood, with misconceptions about pain, legitimacy, and more. Terence clarifies, “Chiropractic is actually not only super natural, but it’s really actually gentle, especially when done in our office and done correctly.” Before anything, patients are given a full physical exam to make sure that they are a proper candidate for treatment. With this, their doctors are also fully certified to do physical therapy, easing the road to recovery for patients with more severe injuries. At McAuliffe Chiropractic Office, the focus is on ensuring each patient’s comfort and well-being.

To conclude, McAuliffe Chiropractic Office stands as a testament to the enduring power of familyfocused healthcare. With over a century of collective experience, they continue to provide Laurel and its surrounding communities with compassionate, effective, and convenient chiropractic care.

The Gymnastics Sensation

In the Gymnastics World, Simone Biles has redefined the meaning of goat. In October of 2023, she made history of being the most decorated gymnast of All-Time. Biles earned this title after winning her 34th medal across world championships and the Olympics. Biles began her gymnastics journey at the age of six, and by 16-years-old she took her claim to fame after winning two gold medals at the Antwerp Championship. At the same competition, she introduced a new floor exercise nicknamed the Biles, a double layout with a half twist, which took the world by storm. Her first Olympics was in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, where she took the gold in the all-around, team, vault, and floor, making her the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals in a single game. Besides making history on the floor, beams, and vaults, Biles brought attention to other things athletes experience. In 2021, after withdrawing from the Tokyo games due to “the twisties”, a mental block gymnasts can have, she sparked worldwide discussion geared towards athlete mental health. She pushed fans and athletes to focus on aiming for a balance between performance and mental health, encouraging them not to be afraid to take muchneeded breaks.

Hi!
Why

M LOUNGE STUDIO

In the heart of Bowie, a luxurious transformation is unfolding in the world of event planning, spearheaded by Veronica Myrille, owner of M Lounge Events. With a decade of experience and a spirit firmly rooted in community enrichment, M Lounge Events is redefining what it means to celebrate life’s milestones.

The origin of M Lounge Events is as inspiring as its founder. Beginning nearly ten years ago in Capitol Heights, its journey in the event space was fueled by a necessity to support her non-profit organization to support teenage girls in leadership training. With no funding from the county or grants, her venture into venues was born from a need to fund this philanthropic pursuit. With a portion of the business functioning as a community center, she was able

to begin putting on small events such as baby and bridal showers. From this blossomed a full-fledged business, including multiple event venues and a content studio.

Fast forward to July 2023 - after years of searching for a larger space, M Lounge Events proudly opened its doors in Bowie, expanding in both size and scope. While the Capitol Heights location functions more as an intimate lounge-like event space, this new venue, nestled in the heart of Bowie Town Center, caters to a broader spectrum of events - from weddings to quinceañeras to birthday parties, accommodating up to 150 seated guests and 250 cocktail style.

The location itself is strategic, keeping local communities engaged and thriving while offering a

32 | March/April 2024

luxurious experience right in their backyard. Instead of having to travel to National Harbor or Washington, D.C., clients can now experience luxury right at home. “What makes us unique is that not only are we a small minority-owned business, but we opened up smack in the middle of our city so that people that are close can keep their dollars local while also being able to celebrate and have their opulent events on a local front,” she explained. “I want people to understand they don’t have to go far for a luxurious experience anymore.”

The uniqueness of M Lounge Events lies in its Content Studio - a groundbreaking concept that elevates the event experience. Housing 40 diverse backdrops, this studio is the largest content studio in Prince George’s County. “For those of us who are not big eaters

and big dancers, if you add the studio component to your ballroom experience, you just elevated the game of how to throw an amazing party,” she says. This studio transforms each event into an immersive, social media-worthy spectacle. The backdrops and studio as a whole can also be rented outside of the event spaces, as a content creation vehicle.

As M Lounge Events gears up for a pickup in events, they emphasize the significance of their space for weddings. Surrounded by hotels, the venue is perfectly poised for wedding celebrations, promising convenience and luxury to out-of-town guests.

M Lounge Events is not just an event space; it’s a local gem, a testament to its vision of providing opulent experiences within the community.
