PUBLISHER’S NOTE

BACK TO JEANS AND BEDTIME ROUTINES September has arrived. That means kids are back in school, and many teens have made their way to college. The days of staying up late or sleeping in are replaced by homework and bedtime routines. This time of year gets me excited for the fall season and everything related to it. The weather begins to cool and some trees may even begin dropping their leaves. Who doesn’t love watching football games, pulling out the sweaters and jeans, and trying out new fall recipes? Our issue this month is packed with exciting content. The List (p. 7) has fabulous items to keep you warm and cozy, Good Tastes (p. 42) has a delicious jam and pecan waffles brunch recipe, and don’t forget the American Cancer Society is hosting their twelfth annual Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser (p. 24). In addition, you can learn how to talk to your teenager about underage drinking on page 26. We hope you pick up our publication this month and take some time to relax, read, and enjoy SIMPLYkc. If you’re as excited about the approaching fall season as I am, you will love what we have to offer. Welcome, September!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Brian Gordon

Who: What:

BRIAN GORDON Parenting is hard. There are sleepless nights, meltdowns at the grocery store, and messes—oh, the messes! Some people complain to friends about the trials of parenthood, but Brian Gordon did something else. He began drawing as a cathartic way to vent the frustrations of parenting. Fowl Language Comics was born while Gordon was employed at Hallmark. After being laid off, though, he decided to make a living as a web cartoonist. In early fall 2015, a collection of his work went viral, becoming the fifth most shared article on Facebook worldwide that year. This exposure got the attention of book publishers, and the first of his three books was published by Kansas City’s own Andrews McMeel in 2016. He’s continued to make cartoons for a global audience from his dining room/art studio ever since. Find Fowl Language Comics at fowllanguagecomics.com

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE It used to be Oklahoma Joe’s until that became a ridiculously overcrowded tourist destination. Q39 is my current favorite—if only slightly less busy.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK My living room? The bartender sucks, but it’s very reasonably priced. If I’m splurging, Conroy’s Public House on Rainbow Blvd. because they make a wonderful Moscow Mule and it’s an easy walk to my home.

FAVORITE SHOPPING I love window shopping on the Plaza or Mass Street in Lawrence. But if I’m completely honest, most of my shopping happens at Costco. Where else can you get dinner, an 80 inch television, and a lifetime supply of toilet paper? FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS Have I mentioned that adorable boutique, Costco? FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS I take them to Q39, Alamo Drafthouse, or the front porch of my house for affordable, if clumsily made, cocktails.

the-top vanity, of course. Brown’s client wanted pieces that felt like furniture. His solution was to replace the old vanity with a glamorous writing desk that has an Italian cut and a smoky mirror overhead. The unexpected writing desk is the focal point in the bathroom; everything else is understated. Brown says, “Every room should have a statement piece or focal point. If you don’t have one, you have to create one with a piece of furniture or art piece. That’s what starts the conversation—a story.”

FOR A QUEEN WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON AFTER PHOTOS BY CATHRYN FARLEY

our home has a story. The obvious stories can be told. Maybe that now-six-foottall tree in your backyard was planted the same week your son was born. Or one year, the dog ate the Thanksgiving pie on your kitchen counter. Or your daughter’s favorite spot to do homework is on the giant leather chair in the living room. Your home tells a story without using words. Traditional, modern, contemporary, it doesn’t matter what your home’s style is—it sets a mood. It provokes emotion, but it also reflects your personal comfort. Will Brown is the owner of Will Brown Interiors. His job is interior design. His job is to find your home’s story. Brown’s client presented him with a challenge: her European traditional master bedroom and master bath didn’t look the way she envisioned. The two rooms were dark and she didn’t

have enough room to spread out. Her goal was relaxation. She wanted her master bedroom to feel like a place she could hang out all day and her bathroom to be a personal sanctuary with light spilling in. She wanted to feel like a queen in this part of her home. And there it was—royalty. A European princess. Brown ran with it. “A princess in Europe became the story I created. I don’t show you fabric and colors. I find your story. It gets you there emotionally with design and takes you on a journey. I’m a storyteller,” Brown explains. Channeling a European princess, Brown started with the bathroom. Where would this European princess get ready in the morning? At an over-

The tub presented a challenge for Brown. When the old tub was removed and the freestanding tub was put in, it left open space around the perimeter. It needed to match the tile on the floor. Stone is a natural substance so it needs to come from the same lot. With the help of vendors, Brown was able to make the tile work. “The biggest change for this project was the color,” he explains. “Using creams added more dimension to the space. From there, it was exciting to get the next layer in. My client can read in the master because she has light coming in from the bay windows. If you have the space in your master to bring in a chair or a sofa, do it. It adds a quiet space in the room.” After everything was finished, Brown’s client felt like the royalty she had envisioned. The European princess, that is.

Things to know before updating a bathroom or master bedroom: BUDGET. Many people aren’t honest or up-

front with budget. Do your homework before you get involved.

KNOW WHAT IS INSPIRING YOUR PROJECT. Are you selling the house and needing

to update to get the best value? That’s important to know if you won’t be personally enjoying the space. Are you converting space because you’re expecting a new baby? Are the kids moving out and you need help deciding what to do with the extra space? Your home is an emotional investment.

KNOW YOUR STYLE/AESTHETIC. Are you

modern or contemporary? There’s a difference. What modern means to you may be different than what modern means to your spouse. Spouses don’t always agree, but that can be a good thing. An interior designer can find a middle ground. That is what design often is—a blending.

Below: Master suite before the remoldel

TRUST IN THE PROCESS. This is what an

interior designer does. You’ll see the big picture and everything will make sense at the end. Interior design isn’t television. There isn’t a “ta-da!” moment. The process is incremental because you’re still living in your home. You’ll build a relationship and let your home tell your story.

KACIE HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS DECADES AFTER THE PLAYGROUND

I recently retired. Many of my friends were from my workplace and I feel lonely and deprived of connections. Any advice?

Show up at happy hour and buy a round of tequila shots for the bar. You’ll make a lot of friends! Okay don’t do that. You can’t handle that unless you’re 22. I’m guessing you’re not retired at 22. But seriously … this is your time to do what you want. You’re retired. You didn’t drop off the earth. You can still be friends with your old workplace connections. Start with your existing social network, but don’t limit yourself to it. It’s time to find a hobby. The Kansas City Parks (kcparks.org) is a wonderful resource for finding a hobby. Try volunteering. Join a gym with senior classes. If you’re the social media kind, Facebook is a good resource for finding senior groups as well. Once you find your group, treat yourself with your newfound friends. Kansas City has senior discounts all over the city: Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City Zoo, AMC Theatres and almost every major attraction in Kansas City. Don’t buy a round of tequila shots, though. Your friends will leave you very quickly.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

BE WELL

PREVENTING BACK PAIN WITH AGE WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

Get active Staying physically active is one of the best things we can do for our back. “A lot of people in my clinic are 50 or over and have a job where they sit most of the day,” says Dr. Lovick. “It’s important to keep our core muscles strong in order to protect the spine.” Pilates and yoga classes can help with strengthening the core muscles that support the back. But the most important thing is to find an exercise you enjoy, whether that’s riding a bike or going for a walk. If you have a medical condition, check with your physician first to help find an exercise that’s right for you.

Maintain a healthy weight

If you’ve ever experienced back pain, you know it can strike without warning. It might be caused by lifting something heavy, sitting in an uncomfortable seat, or even just reaching for something on the floor. “I think 90 percent of people have it at some point in their lives,” says Darren Lovick, MD, neurosurgeon with AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “It’s the second most common reason people go to the doctor, next to the common cold.” As we get older, back pain can become even more frequent. Often, it’s the result of our arthritic changes and diminishing muscular tone supporting the spine.

“The majority of back pain starts in our 40s and 50s,” says Dr. Lovick. “As the joints and discs in our back wear, arthritis sets in and can lead to back pain. Back pain is an elusive symptom to pin down and usually caused by a number of factors.” Fortunately, living a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of back pain. “As we get older and busier, we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves,” says Dr. Lovick. “By staying physically active and strong, we can prevent some of those back problems down the road.” To help prevent age-related back problems, Dr. Lovick suggests the following tips.

As we get older, we tend to put on extra weight. That can lead to extra stress on the spine, especially when those extra pounds are in the midsection. Staying within 10 pounds of your ideal body weight can help prevent strain on the muscles and bones in the back. Eat a healthy diet and make sure you’re getting nutrients like calcium and vitamin D to keep your bones strong.

Stop smoking Smoking not only affects your lungs but the rest of your body, including your back. “Any nicotine use is really hard on your bones and tissues,” says Dr. Lovick. “That can lead to aging of the spine and discs as well. By quitting smoking, you can help your body be stronger and heal faster.”

Don’t slouch Good posture can help prevent back pain as well. Whether you’re at work continued on page 20

or relaxing at home, find a chair that helps you keep your back straight and gives support for your lower back. Adjust your seat so your feet are flat on the floor and your thighs are parallel to the floor. Rest your feet on a stepstool if needed. When standing, distribute weight on both feet equally and keep your back straight.

Avoid injuries Back injuries can lead to chronic problems as we age. Make sure you’re using proper body mechanics during your daily activities. If you have to lift something heavy, bend your knees, keep your back straight, and hold the object close to your body. Make

sure you’re not bending over from the waist to lift it. If you regularly carry a backpack, bag, or purse, make sure to keep it as light as possible.

Talk to your doctor Most people with back pain improve with therapy and time, says Dr. Lovick. “To help ease pain, alternating ice and heat can be beneficial. You can also take an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen or aspirin.”

LEADING THE WAY IN FINANCE: LEAD BANK IN KANSAS CITY WRITTEN BY NATALIE CHRISTIE MCGOVERN / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Lead Bank is a cut above the rest in the financial industry of the Kansas City community. A recipient of the prestigious 2018 Mr. K Award for showcasing business growth and sustainability, positive company culture, and a record for giving back to the community, Lead Bank is proud to be the only bank in the country led by women.

For 90 years it has served as an independent commercial bank dedicated to delivering smart financial solutions for business owners, managers, their families, and communities. With a new flagship location in Kansas City’s KC Crossroads District, a new era of banking is being introduced to clients. CEO Joshua Rowland—a former commercial litigator—took over operations in 2005. With a redirection in branding in 2010 and a mission to serve both the rural and suburban communities, Lead Bank has paved the way for best banking services and created a focus on helping minorities and women with their financial needs. A third location was opened in 2015 in the Crossroads District with this innovative approach at the forefront. “This location was purposely designed to unite the expertise, experience, and technology with the people behind the inspired businesses taking Kansas City into tomorrow,” says Rowland. Lead Bank reflects its overall ambition to help clients and communities, and is recognized as an innovator in the financial industry through a national online banking and lending presence. Their venture credit business has established them as key influencers in venture capital and technology in Kansas. Technology is paramount, and is harnessed for the wider community so it is readily accessible for public use. Lead Bank works with clients one on one to help them succeed financially. At the Crossroads branch, Lead Bank provides interactive workstations and video conferencing to help local business owners succeed. “We recognize that only by viewing others with compassion, openness, and imagination are we able to achieve the understanding needed to be a dependable partner in the success

of Kansas City,” says Rowland. “Only by being nimble in our actions can we break out of complacency to embark on innovations that will create and inspire success.” Lead Bank’s vision has spread to other projects as well. Kansas City has around $1 billion in city contracts, but only 10 percent of local contractors bid on the projects. This is due to a lack of funding to bid and complete the projects. Because of this problem, Lead Bank has created a Civic Contractor Funding Program. Through this program, they have provided $18 million in credit for local contractors, $6.6 million in credit for other related contracts, and $875,000 for the KC Single Terminal Airport Project. The KC Single Terminal Airport Project selected Lead Bank to provide financing to disadvantaged women, minority, and veteran-owned businesses. Lead Bank also supports community initiatives such

as Edgemoor’s Pay Without Delay program, which helps minority businesses, women-owned businesses, small local businesses, and veteran-owned subcontractors get paid within 14 days of submitting invoices.

“By keeping our promise to take time to hear about our clients’ goals and needs, we are able to help them meet those goals.” Small businesses often miss out on bid opportunities because of lack of capital. This airport funding plan, which was created for small businesses that include women- and minority-owned firms, will provide the opportunity to be a part of bettering Kansas City.

Lead Bank also prides itself in putting forth philanthropic efforts by supporting the arts and organizations in KC such as the KC Symphony Happy Hour Concert Series and the Kansas City Art Institute Lead Emerging Artist Program (LEAP). Humanitarian efforts are also crucial in the culture Lead Bank cultivates. Lead Bank’s staff finds ways to become actively involved in the community by serving more than 35 organizations. Community efforts are focused on the wellbeing of women and children in crisis through organizations such as MOSCA Women’s Employment Network, The Child Protection Center, CASA, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. In addition, they extend knowledge to small business owners and startups. “By keeping our promise to take time to hear about our clients’ goals and needs, we are able to help them meet those goals,” explains Rowland. “As a community bank, it’s our responsibility to do the right thing.”

AROUND TOWN

SURVIVORS & SNEAKERS IN KANSAS CITY COACHES VS. CANCER

WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY STRAUSS PEYTON PORTRAIT GALLERY

Kansas City is not a small town anymore. With 2.34 million people living in the Kansas City metropolitan, it’s impossible to know everyone. Nevertheless, Kansas Citians stand together. We cheer when Patrick Mahomes throws a touchdown. We display our alma mater’s flag when the neighbor displays a rival’s flag. We run half marathons together. And when the unimaginable happens— such as a child receiving a cancer diagnosis—we come together in every way we can. The American Cancer Society of Kansas City is in its twelfth year of hosting Coaches vs. Cancer, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Division I, II, and III college coaches, along with high school and other youth league coaches across the country, are part of the program, which has raised more than $115 million to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives, cele-

brate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. The American Cancer Society of Kansas City will host Coaches vs. Cancer on Sept. 19 at the Kansas City Convention Center at 6 pm. The event will feature a silent and live auction, cocktails, dinner, and a conversation with the area’s top college basketball coaches, including Bill Self from University of Kansas, Bruce Webber from Kansas State University, Cuonzo Martin from the University of Missouri, Billy Donlon from University of Missouri Kansas City, Jacie Hoyt from University of Missouri Kansas City, and Ben McCollum from Northwest Missouri State University. “We’re very excited for these coaches to be here. There will be a chance for the audience to ask the coaches questions and maybe have some friendly banter,” Megan Hanna, de-

velopment manager at the American Cancer Society says. “We’ve never had audience participation before. It will almost be like a press conference, but in a personal way. Jacie [Hoyt] will be a fun addition to hang out with the guys. And she’ll hold her own, too.” The coaches share a bond with the American Cancer Society. University of Missouri’s Martin is himself a cancer survivor. Also, UMKC’s Donlon is grateful to the American Cancer Society for the extra years he received with his mom before she passed away from breast cancer. The biggest stars of the night, though, will be the Cancer Champions. These children are survivors of cancer and are willing to tell their stories. Each champion will have the honor of escorting a featured coach of the panel to the stage.

Lauren Harrison, age 12, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in November 2017. While most kids her age were dealing with the awkward middle school years, Harrison was losing hair, energy, and listening to doctors’ conversations about her life. Harrison finished her last round of chemo in August 2018. The American Cancer Society in Kansas City asked her if she would be the honorary Cancer Champion of 2018. She had the honor of escorting her favorite coach, Kansas State University’s Bruce Webber, to the stage.

“And then the coolest thing happened,” says Megan Hanna. “Coach Webber stayed connected to her and the family. He texted her throughout her treatments. She got phone calls while he was at games. The coaches don’t only show up for this event. They stay connected. It’s not kind of awesome—it’s really awesome!”

This year’s goal is to raise $500,000 toward pediatric cancer. The American Cancer Society Kansas City is having a contest to see which coach can raise the most money. The winning coach will be revealed the night of the Coaches vs. Cancer event. For those not able to attend, all donations will be accepted online under the coach of your choice. PARENTING

TALKING TO YOUR KIDS

ABOUT UNDERAGE DRINKING WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK

When your children are teens, they still care what you think. It may not seem like it, but you still have a profound influence on their lives. This is why it is extremely important you talk to your teens about prevalent issues such as underage drinking. Your views and attitudes about underage drinking have a significant impact on your teen’s views and attitudes on underage drinking. Underage drinking continues to be a problem for the Kansas City area. Traffic crashes are the single greatest cause of death in the Kansas City area for people ages 6 to 33, and about 45 percent of these deaths are related to alcohol consumption. In addition, alcohol kills six times more youth than all other illicit drugs combined in the Kansas City area. In addition to the immediate physical risk, underage drinking can have long-term impacts on a developing youth. The long-term impacts are not fully agreed upon by researchers, but they do agree that binge-drinking

during adolescence and into the teen years can have negative impacts on memory function and brain development. According to a study published in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, this can be seen especially in girls who binge-drink during their teens. Preventing your children from starting or continuing underage drinking can have enormously positive impacts, but it can be very difficult, as you are not the only influence on your teen’s life. Also, as your teen grows older, they become more independent and able to make their own decisions. This is healthy in many ways, but it means you have less control over what they do and where they go. Nevertheless, there are tips that can help protect your teen from alcohol. • Express concern for their safety: Parents underestimate how many teens use alcohol, assuming that their child won’t do it. Confront the reality that your child is susceptible to this behavior as well, and talk to them about it. Tell them how concontinued on page 28

PARENTING CONT. cerned you are about this kind of behavior and how disappointing it would be if they were to engage in it. Verbally reminding them of your views on the subject can make it just a little bit more difficult to take that first drink. • Listen: Parent Up Kansas City, a branch of a national organization dedicated to keeping children safe from the harms of alcohol, encourages you to have an open dialogue with your children, but to remember to listen first. “Be an active listener,” Parent Up explains. “Bring up the subject when you are both relaxed and can have a calm conversation. Don’t be in a rush. Allow your teen to speak without interruption.” • Explain: After you have listened, explain in a calm, logical man-

ner. Do not get heated or upset in the conversation or it will set you back in your communication process. Communicate the realistic dangers and harms of underage drinking, but not in an accusatory manner. Emphasize your concern for their safety and health, but that ultimately they are responsible for their body. This does not excuse any amount of underage drinking, though, as it is illegal, dangerous, and can lead to dependency on alcohol later in life. You are protecting them from legal, physical, and emotional consequences. • Encourage: Make sure to be positive about their future. As a teen, you typically do not look very far into the future. If the near future seems dim, it can be very depressing. Instead, encourage them in al-

ternative behaviors, such as sports or hobbies. Tell them how proud you are of their accomplishments, and facilitate these strengths. • Take action: Parent Up Kansas City continues by explaining that you must be “specific and strict when it comes to alcohol.” Know where you stand on the issue and set clear rules and boundaries. If you do not know where you stand, this is the time to find out. Do your research and come to a decision. Learn more about how alcohol can impact teens and families. If you do not know where you stand, neither will your teen. Learn more about the impacts of alcohol on children at parentupkc. com/facts.

DISH

CHEFFOX VAUGHN GOOD & PEARL WRITTEN BY MEL MCDOWELL / PHOTOS BY MEL MCDOWELL

Vaughn Good started cooking as a young man in Lawrence, Kansas, before attending culinary school at Johnson County Community College and subsequently graduating from the French Culinary Institute in New York.

H

e went from being the Sous chef at Pachamama’s to opening the highly regarded Hank Charcuterie in 2014, a butcher and sandwich shop turned full service restaurant. These days he’s spearheading the oneyear-old Fox & Pearl in its beautifully remodeled location in the eclectic yet welcoming Westside neighborhood. The menu changes with what’s available each season, so be sure to visit regularly.

What was your favorite dish growing up, and who cooked it? One of my favorite dishes was something my grandmother would cook. She would take pork shoulder or sometimes pork shanks, cook them down, braise them in sauerkraut, and then serve them over mashed potatoes.

What do you think sets your restaurant apart from other similar restaurants? The wood-fired hearth gives the food such a different character and adds so much flavor. We use white oak in the hearth, and hickory and apple woods in our smokers. We also put so much work into what we do. We are a completely from scratch kitchen, so a lot of our dishes have a week of prep time.

Do you have a guilty pleasure food? Roadside diner style cheeseburgers.

Is there a dish or cuisine you’d like to master but haven’t yet? I don’t think you ever truly master anything in cooking. That’s one of the great parts about being a chef, it’s about continually educating yourself and getting better. The drive to keep getting better at things keeps you fresh.

Do you have any tips for the home cook? Build a pantry. Try to can things, pickle things, make spice mixes, and infuse oils. Set yourself up to be able to cook. The more you have at your ready, the better you’ll be.

What’s your go-to cocktail? Old granddad and some ice cubes.

What’s the best meal you’ve had recently? I checked out Harp Barbeque at one of his pop-ups at Crane Brewing Co. That’s some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had, not just the best in Kansas City. One of my other favorite go-to meals is Los Alamos at 17th & Summit streets. That place is special.

What’s your favorite thing about Kansas City? I love how many creative and artistic people I’ve met here, and not just in culinary or hospitality, but all other kinds of arts too. Just to meet people and hang out with them is inspiring and makes you want to push harder at what you’re doing.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

FRIDAY, THE 13TH WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

I

t’s here: the first Friday, the 13th, of 2019.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. Thrillers are my favorite movies. I realize this is September’s issue of SIMPLYkc, not October’s, but that’s just how the days land on the calendar. I’m not scared of Friday, the 13th, because there are much bigger things to be scared of in life. Here are thirteen. 1. Y our over-37 drunk self taking fireball shots with friends. Do not do it. You’re old and your body cannot process shots of liquor anymore. No amount of water will help you. The second you faceplant into your pillow, tomorrow morning will be standing in the corner of your bedroom staring and waiting to pounce with its pain and regret. 2. A text message that says, “Can I call you?” It’s 2019. Am I in trouble?

3. H earing your dog jumping off the bed in the middle of the night when you’re too tired to get up and let it outside. Of course, you’ll forget about that dreamlike state until you step in that puddle waiting on the floor. 4. T oddlers and teenagers who need a nap. Just claim they’re not your kids. 5. T he moment you get on the ramp for I-35 southbound after you made a mental note to take the backroads home because you heard I-35 southbound is a standstill. Welcome to the terror of Kansas City traffic. 6. O pening your email from your kid’s school nurse with the subject “Lice Contagion.” You’re scratching your head, aren’t you? 7. “ This is your captain speaking. We’ll be hitting some turbulence. We’ll keep the seatbelt light on for the duration of the flight and, unfortunately, we’ll be canceling our beverage ser-

vice. Sorry for the inconvenience.” 8. P atrick Mahomes being carted off the field. Don’t hate me. I knocked on wood. You know it’s scary. 9. T he first time your kids sleep in late. Is she dead? They’re not. And congratulations! They sleep in now. 10. “ Mom, my throat hurts.” 11. A fter being told not to drink the water while vacationing in Mexico, realizing that the ice you had in your drinks did, in fact, count as water. You’ll need an IV when you get back to the States. I know. You’ll be fine. 12. O pening WebMD at 2 am because your toe hurts. 13. Y our shower drain is at least 3 inches deep after you finish showering. Here comes the sulfur smell.

LULU’S BOUTIQUE:

CELEBRATING ART AND FASHION WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Mission, Kansas, has enjoyed a revitalization recently, and storefronts like Lulu’s Boutique—a trendy shop owned by local artist Jennifer Bricker-Pugh and her husband Joe—are part of this trend.

It was here that Bricker-Pugh discovered Lulu’s Boutique. “When I found out Lulu’s was for sale, I went in on a whim and asked the previous owner about it,” says Bricker-Pugh. “Ultimately I decided I could do both—run this cute little boutique, and have a corner to paint when time allows.” Other artists also sell handmade items in the store, including jewelers and crafters. “I am always looking to help facilitate artists who do not have a brick-and-mortar shop to help them get out there. We love being that unique venue. And I get to scratch both of my itches—my love of art and my love of fashion,” says Bricker-Pugh. Bricker-Pugh creates her own abstract expressionist paintings using acrylics and mixed media. “The pieces are vibrant and colorful, with elements of

nonrepresentational, as well as forays into the abstract,” she explains.

There are so many unique and amazing items you can’t find in just any store. All of the walls at Lulu’s Boutique which are able to hold art do hold art. Approximately 20 pieces adorn the walls, ranging from small, very affordable pieces starting at 4 by 6 inches and 5 by 7 inches to works as big as 48 by 72 inches. She also sells handmade coasters with her prints on them and handmade and handpainted notecards. Bricker-Pugh’s love for painting is evident by the fact that she painted a mural of poppies on the entire back wall of the boutique. She even brought her love to the outside of the shop by securing permission from the city last

year to paint a mural on the exterior wall—an 8 by 10 foot mural of Lulu’s Boutique’s logo and poppies. “I loved the idea of bringing art outdoors as they do in the Crossroads, and I feel Mission can benefit from that effort. I think art created for the outdoors brings a vibrancy to the community that nothing else can touch,” she explains. “It is unique, which adds texture and brilliance to the area. I hope my effort on our small mural will help facilitate more outdoor creativity, with the result being that we bring more people to Mission.” Kia Bondurant, another customer of Lulu’s Boutique, says she loves being able to shop for both art and fashion in the same place. “What I love about Lulu’s is that you know you are buying from an artist who carefully curates the clothing and gifts while painting her vibrant fine art. It’s a treat to the eyes when I stop in to see what’s new in the boutique. I’ve got a place all picked out for my next art piece. And I have lots of Lulu’s packed to wear on vacation.”

GOOD TASTES

WHISKEY FOR BREAKFAST (KINDA SORTA) WRITTEN BY SAMANTHA LEVI / PHOTO BY SAMANTHA LEVI

If you know me, you know I love whiskey—and by whiskey, I mean KC Rieger whiskey. They’ve paid tribute to the old family recipe. What makes this blend unique is the added sherry. So, last summer while stirring up some quick peach jam to go on my waffles, I had this brilliant idea to add my favorite whiskey to the batch of peaches I was preparing. I don’t want to be biased (but I am) against other whiskeys and bourbons. So if you use another, just make sure it has similar flavor profiles to the peaches (or whatever fruit you are using). I chose Rieger because of its smooth, slightly sweet taste, which in turn complements the tart peaches. I am not one for canning, but I do appreciate a great jam. And who doesn’t love waffles? This is a tried-and-true brunch favorite at my house all year long.

Farm-raised and city-approved, Samantha Levi takes an intuitive approach to the kitchen. She teaches to truly listen to ones physical self and learn to understand how food is mental and effects your physical body. By integrating this approach into the kitchen, Samantha cooks from the heart using healthy whole food ingredients and applies an inventive and adventurous style to her dishes.

SOCIALWORX PUBLIC RELATIONS GROWS BUSINESSES ONE CONVERSATION AT A TIME WRITTEN BY SIMPLYKC STAFF / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

In a warm coffee shop on a frigid March morning in 2010, Jenny Kincaid Julian decided to jump into the world of entrepreneurialism. Having owned a women’s boutique and worked for a public relations firm, she felt her experience planning events, pitching media, and creating relationships throughout the city set her up to further her career. She noticed a shortage of PR firms that were able to offer fundamental media relations services and a relationship-building element at an affordable price, so she created Social-

worx Public Relations. Since 2010, the company has acquired more than 80 clients from coast to coast and has more than doubled its revenue in the past five years.

The company is a group of problem solvers and communication partners who provide sophisticated media solutions that establish, amplify, and empower brands to do more. Kincaid

Julian explains, “We are connectors and doers. We’re charismatic, energetic, and we get it. We are here to help our clients succeed, and we’re able to do that a variety of ways. By socializing a client’s cause, staff, products, and services, Socialworx Public Relations can move their brands into a sustainable business model.” Kincaid Julian’s workdays are never the same. “Business owners don’t get the luxury of clocking in and out at the same time every day and having a set schedule,” she explains. “I’m the face of my brand and our clients’ brands. I oversee day-to-day activities, finances, forecasting, partnerships, regularly pitching media and developing editorial calendars, continuously working on filling the pipeline, devouring data, creating client strategy and messaging, writing content, scheduling social media posts, brainstorming messaging and campaign tactics, networking, and interacting with our clients face-to-face.” She says her favorite part of the business is the people and the relationships she’s created, though. “My favorite part has always been and will always be the people I meet and work beside. Kansas City is full of innovative and creative souls, and I’ve been privileged to meet so many of them.” One of the things that makes SocialWorx PR unique is the way they interact with their clients. “If our client is going door-to-door to deliver a message, we want to go with them. If they’re launching a yoga class, we will Downward Dog with the best of them.” says Kincaid Julian. They still write and distribute press releases and pitch local

and national media, but they get more mileage out of being a strategic partner in moving your business forward rather than sticking to typical client-to-client relationships.

You tell us whom you want to get in front of—whether an individual, a business, a municipality, a nonprofit, or an organization—and we’ll take care of the rest. The most unique attribute about the company is its service offering called social relations. “If you can’t be out in the community meeting people, we can,” explains Kincaid Julian. “We want to know where you want to be and whom you want to be talking to—individual, business, nonprofit, or an organization—and we’ll take care of the rest.” Services provided include content creation, influencer relations, press release writing and distribution, social media, cause communication, internal communications, VIP list creation and execution, search engine optimization, and more. Kincaid Julian also recently launched a six-week mentor program that provides support and guidance to busi-

ness owners, communication directors and teams, and anyone who wants to advance their business presence in their community and with the media. On top of their varied services, the company works with a large variety of diverse clients. This client roster includes hospitality and retail, restaurants, hotels, commercial real estate, finance, women’s health, senior living, and several nonprofit organizations. They’ve even had a client who is an author on the New York Times Best-Sellers list, and one who is an international artist. “The client roster is diverse for a reason. I want clients to be able to work with one another and benefit from each of their networks,” explains Kincaid Julian. Ami Vanderhoof of Coopers Hawk Winery & Restaurant says, “Jenny’s commitment to clients and excellence in the PR and marketing fields is made clear by her passion, pursuit of perfection, and professionalism. We see the positive impact that Socialworx PR brought to our Kansas City location through positive media attention, PR, and event opportunities presented to us.” Socialworx PR is currently accepting applications for their private master class. “This six-week course will provide media relations support and guidance on how and when to pitch media, how to find the right journalist for your industry, examples of editorial and social media calendars, editorial calendars, a variety of templates, and many more useful items,” explains Kincaid Julian. For anyone wanting to grow their business, Socialworx PR is an excellent fit for you.

APP OF THE MONTH

PROTECT YOUR KIDS FROM ONLINE DANGERS THROUGH THIS MONITORING APP The gist: Monitoring your child’s Internet usage on home computers is fairly simple, but how do you ensure

your kids are safe when it comes to smartphones? The award-winning Bark app aims to bring a solution to the many problems that can arise through social media and smartphone use. Parents can connect Bark with their kids’ phones and other devices to monitor more than twenty social media platforms, as well as texts, photos, videos, and emails. The app then alerts parents when their child or the person they’re communicating with is using profanity, sexting, being bullied, or showing signs of depression. The app also detects threats of violence and discussions of self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or drug use, among other things. Although parents aren’t given full access to their child’s communications, parents do receive snippets of flagged content paired with recommendations from child psychologists on how best to react. Bark costs $9 per month, per family.

THINGS YOU SHOULD DO EVERY MORNING

1 Smile.

Oxytocin is the brain chemical that makes you feel warm and fuzzy. Give yourself a dose of this first thing in the morning by remembering the people you love.

2 D rink a glass of lemon water.

Sure, coffee might be top-of-mind for some of you, especially if you’re not a morning person or you’ve had a late night. But try drinking a glass of lemon water first thing. It gives you steady, natural energy that can last a whole day.

3 Stretch out.

Stretching your calves, hamstrings, quads, back, chest, shoulders, and triceps will help you more quickly recover from a restless night spent fighting over the covers.

4 Eat a healthy breakfast.

You’ve probably been told hundreds of times “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But skip the sugary cereals and donuts. Instead, choose low-fat protein, fruits and veggies, and healthy carbs.

5 E xercise … or meditate.

Whether it’s going for a run, lifting weights, doing yoga, or clearing your mind, regular exercise or meditation reduces stress, makes you happier, increases your energy, helps you sleep better, boosts your immune system, and is good for your overall health.

6 M ake a to-do list.

Write down all the things you want to accomplish, today or otherwise. Consider this your brain dump. Then choose the most time-sensitive task and put that on your to-do list.

There. That’s what you’ll focus on. Yes, you’ll have just one item on your list, but you may find it easier to stay on track when you have a single, clearly defined task to work on.

7 Clean your space.

Tidy room, tidy mind … right? Sure, but since it’s still early in the morning, don’t worry about cleaning a whole room. Try instead to clear the clutter from the space you’re about to work in. Setting a timer will help you do it quickly so you can focus on the more important task at hand.
