PUBLISHER’S NOTE

KANSAS CITY: GRACIOUS & GIVING One of the things I love most about this city is its people. Kansas Citians aren’t just friendly; we’re giving. In fact, there’s data to back up that claim. According to WalletHub, Kansas City, Missouri, has the highest population of people who do favors for neighbors. And Kansas and Missouri are the 20th and 19th most charitable states, respectively. We also have some pretty fantastic philanthropic organizations in this city. From global nonprofits like Children International, Heart to Heart International, and Water.Org to local charities like City Union Mission, Harvesters, and reStart, we’re doing a lot of good in this at home and abroad. In our Around Town story on page 12, our writer profiles Care Beyond the Boulevard—a local nonprofit flying under the radar to most of us, but one that is incredibly important to the people it helps. Care Beyond the Boulevard is a mobile medical facility housed in a big green bus. Three nights a week, the bus—staffed with medical professionals—runs routes in Independence and Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, providing health care to the homeless or anyone appearing in need of care. I’m in awe of the doctors, nurses, surgeons, pharmacists, and more who volunteer their time to care for the vulnerable in our city. Kansas City and its surrounding towns are nothing without its people, and I’m proud to call KC my home. Here’s to a great May and a wonderful Mother’s Day!

AROUND TOWN

CARE BEYOND THE BOULEVARD MEDICAL CARE FOR THE HOMELESS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTO BY JAMI MARSHALL

The streets of Kansas City talk, but you may not notice the chatter unless you call the streets home. A green school bus drives through the darkened streets of Kansas City, and the streets know it’s coming. The bus may be on time or it may be late, but it shows up every week and the homeless of Kansas City wait along its route.

Left to Right: Nicole Rose, RN, Kay Johnston, RN, Steve Scott, MD, Chris Assmann, Jaynell “KK” Assmann, ARPN, Jonathan Jacobs, MD, Gayla Dunn, Rayyan Kumal

Inside

the bus, there are hospitality items such as blankets, clothes, socks, and even protein bars and bottled water. These are nice, but they are not what the homeless are waiting for. They’re waiting for medical help. Care Beyond the Boulevard is an independent, nonprofit medical mobile unit carrying at least three volunteer nurse practitioners and three volunteer doctors. Some nights there are volunteer pharmacists, medical students, and non-medical personnel as well.

|

MAY 2019

On its route each night, Care Beyond the Boulevard treats approximately 60 to 80 people. The bus has two predetermined routes. Every Tuesday night, the bus travels through Independence, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas. Every Wednesday night, the bus travels through Kansas City, Missouri.

“It’s a fantastic program,” says Dr. Jacobs. “We check the patients in on an iPad and keep an electronic health record on them. We give antibiotics and provide a lot of wound care. We treat everything from diabetes and hypertension to acute diseases such as abscesses, burns, seizures, STDs, and frostbite.”

Dr. Jonathan Jacobs is an internist at Menorah Medical Center in Leawood, Kansas. He has volunteered at Care Beyond the Boulevard since it began in 2016 in the back of a pickup truck loaded with pharmacy and medical supplies.

There are no labs, narcotics, or diagnostics on the bus, so severe cases of HIV, asthma, hepatitis C, and syphilis are encouraged to visit a safety net clinic. Every night leads to a story. One

patient’s story especially stands out to Dr. Jacobs. In December 2018, a veteran with PTSD showed up on the bus. The man explained to Dr. Jacobs that he had a BB bullet embedded in his hand. Someone had broken into his tent, shot his hand, and stolen his belongings. He wanted to know if Dr. Jacobs could remove the BB bullet. Dr. Jacobs told him he is an internist, not a surgeon. He wasn’t comfortable performing surgery on something as complicated as a hand. He cleaned and dressed the wound as much as he could and sent him on his way. A month later, Dr. Jacobs brought a general surgeon on the bus. The same man returned with an infected hand. “I watched the surgeon clean the infection, cut the hand open, and remove the BB bullet,” Dr. Jacobs beams. “His hand is beautiful now. The surgeon did a fantastic job. He’s a regular doctor on the bus and he’s wonderful to have. He’s played a big role in helping patients with diabetes and frostbite.”

The driving force behind Care Beyond the Boulevard is Jaynell “KK” Assmann. Assmann is a nurse practitioner. Her idea to give the homeless free health care started after she began working at a safety net clinic on the side in addition to her nursing job. She noticed a number of homeless people coming into the hospital for medical help. Three years later, Care Beyond the Boulevard runs every week on 100 percent volunteers. You may not notice the chatter of the Kansas City streets, but they do talk, and those thousands of people say thank you.

How you can help Care Beyond the Boulevard: Money allows the doctors to purchase medical supplies such as point-of-care testing, which are simple medical tests that can be performed inside the bus using a needle prick. Point-of-care testing can include blood glucose

testing, food pathogens screening, infectious disease testing, cholesterol screenings, and more. Donations are always accepted, especially hospitality items such as socks, small toiletries, blankets, and clothes. Non-med volunteers are needed to help with inventory, stocking, dispensing, and giving out supplies. Volunteer mechanics for bus repairs are also needed. Health care workers are always in demand. The more health care volunteers, the more routes can be added and the bus can work more efficiently. Every Monday night, Care Beyond the Boulevard staffs a medical clinic as an adjunct to Micah Ministries at Independence Boulevard Christian Church. The clinic and Micah are open for volunteers from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. For more information on donating or volunteering, visit carebeyondtheboulevard.org.

ic sinus polyps and diagnosed her with seasonal allergies. She went through six sinus surgeries, one of those surgeries even putting her into cardiac arrest.

Dr. Neha Patel is welcoming new patients at both her Olathe and Plaza locations.

In December 2018, Marcia Bergin walked into Dr. Patel’s office with a case that had stumped doctors and allergists for over 30 years. Bergin had suffered from asthma nearly her whole life. When Bergin reached her mid-30s, severe symptoms appeared, and her life became a nightmare. Her sense of smell disappeared. She sometimes rested in bed with sinus pressure so bad her eyes swelled

shut and her lung capacity dropped to 33 percent. She landed in the emergency room more times than she can count. Doctors told Bergin she had chron-

Bergin didn’t accept her diagnosis of seasonal allergies, though. For years, she believed it was a food allergy. She tried alternative medicines like herbs and acupuncture, and she increased her exercise routine by running indoors, but with no relief. She thought maybe she was going crazy—until she sat down with Dr. Patel. Dr. Patel’s words still bring happy tears to Bergin’s eyes. “You have a disease we can treat. You’re not crazy,” she told Bergin. “It makes me want to cry that someone listened. My story is a struggle.

I’ve seen a lot of doctors and allergists. What I am diagnosed with is rare and I’m so grateful for Dr. Patel,” Bergin says. Bergin’s diagnosis is an aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease known as Samter’s Triad—in other words an allergy to aspirin, asthma, and nasal polyps. Dr. Patel’s plan included desensitizing Bergin to aspirin. Once desensitized, her symptoms reduced and she was able to take aspirin daily. Even better, Dr. Patel’s long-term goal is to

get Bergin off all asthma medications. Dr. Patel’s love for immunology started when she went to medical school in London. She saw an opportunity to give patients a better quality of life. “I see people not being able to play sports or walk up stairs because they can’t breathe. That’s not how it should be. Everyone should be able to live a normal life,” says Dr. Patel. Dr. Patel completed her fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. It was there where she became devoted to the family counseling aspect of children living with food allergies. Her natural ability to put children at ease and take the time to be thorough with parents led her to move to The Center for Allergy and Immunology. “I want to give patients the time and care they need,” Dr. Patel states. “Children’s Mercy’s Allergy and Immunology Department offers exceptional care, and I want to take my training from there and care for patients in my community.” Emily Umstattd and her son, Eli, age four, are one of the families that have been cared for by Dr. Patel from her earliest days as an allergist. Umstattd took her then-18-month-old son to Children’s Mercy for severe eczema. Through testing, Umstattd was told Eli had a peanut allergy, even though he had never eaten peanuts.

game plan. But Dr. Patel suggested he might be a good candidate for oral immunotherapy. Oral immunotherapy is a series of treatments involving mixing peanut dust powder with grape KoolAid. The child drinks the substance in a controlled setting with doctor supervision. If the child passes, they are sent home with the drink for a week. The next week, the peanut dust powder is increased until the child can safely eat an equivalent of 12 peanuts.

“I see people not being able to play sports or walk up stairs because they can’t breathe. That’s not how it should be. Everyone should be able to live a normal life.” Eli is still in treatment. He has reached the milestone where he can eat foods with the label “may contain peanuts or made in a factory with peanuts.” Umstattd says, “Dr. Patel is invested in trying to help him completely overcome this. You can just tell Dr. Patel loves her patients very much.”

Umstattd believed Eli’s options were over. Avoiding peanuts would be the

RECOGNIZING A FOOD ALLERGY EMERGENCY WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

Food allergies can cause a wide variety of reactions. Some people may notice a rash. Some may get a bad stomachache. And in severe cases, a food allergy can lead to constricted airways and a life-threatening medical emergency.

what happens when someone breaks out in hives. But it can also cause other areas to swell. “It can cause swelling of the tongue and vocal cords,” says Dr. Bradley. “It can also occur in the intestinal wall, which causes a lot of stomach pain.” During anaphylaxis, the entire body reacts to the food allergy. This severe reaction can come on quickly, within minutes, or could happen an hour later. “You might feel like passing out or have difficulty breathing or talking,” says Dr. Bradley. “The body starts sending everything it can to fight the allergen and get rid of it.” For mild symptoms, such as a limited rash on the skin, people can take Benadryl to start to feel better. “It’s good to have Benadryl around,” says Dr. Bradley. “But you want to be cautious. You can’t give someone Benadryl if that person’s tongue is swollen.”

Because food allergies can be life-threatening, it’s important to know how to recognize the symptoms and what to do in an emergency. The month of May is Food Allergy Action Month, which was established to bring awareness to those impacted by food allergies and anaphylaxis, a severe, whole-body allergic reaction. Most of us either know someone with a food allergy or have one ourselves. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, millions of Americans have allergic reactions to foods each year. The most common

foods to cause a food allergy are peanuts, shellfish, fish, milk, tree nuts, soy, wheat, and eggs. When someone with a food allergy eats a bite—or sometimes even a trace—of that food, the immune system has a reaction that treats the food like something harmful. “The body releases chemical mediators that cause fluid to build up,” says John Bradley, DO, medical director for AdventHealth Shawnee Mission’s Emergency Department. When this fluid builds up, it usually causes swelling in the skin, which is

If the person gets more than a mild rash, particularly if they can’t breathe well or talk, call 911. Immediate medical help is essential with any symptoms involving the airway. “Even if the person has a full-body rash, you should err on the side of caution and call for an ambulance,” says Dr. Bradley. “EMS (Emergency Medical Services) can get there to help and get them started on treatment, as opposed to someone taking Benadryl and waiting to see what happens.” Some people with food allergies have an epinephrine autoinjector, also known as EpiPen, which provides quick treatment for severe food allergies. Even after using an EpiPen, you continued on page 18

BE WELL CONT. should always call 911 or go to the emergency room, because the effects could wear off and the symptoms may return. If you don’t have an EpiPen, emergency workers can give the medication quickly in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. “It’s amazing how fast EpiPens can work to save a life,” says Dr. Bradley. “Just one dose is pretty much instantaneous so it can greatly help with symptoms as the person is heading to the emergency room.”

If you notice any of the following symptoms, call 911 immediately. These may be a sign of anaphylaxis, which can start within minutes of eating a food allergen: • Trouble breathing or wheezing • Swollen tongue, face, lips, or throat, or anything else that may constrict the airway

Once you arrive at the emergency room, the providers will ask you about your medical history and what you may have ingested. Most people are diagnosed with food allergies as children, so usually adults will know what caused the reaction.

• A widespread rash, including hives, itchiness, or redness

Check with your physician if you suspect you’ve had a mild allergic reaction, such as a mild rash or stomachache. Don’t assume because it was a mild reaction that you won’t have a more severe one in the future. Each time you’re exposed to the food, the reaction can become more severe.

• Low blood pressure

“Most people who have food allergies are pretty vigilant,” says Dr. Bradley. “Education has gone a long way to prevent adverse outcomes.”

KACIE FRIENDING A GHOST I ghosted my friend and I want to reconnect. What do I do?

If you ghost someone, are they even your friend? First, let’s define ghosting. Ghosting is the practice of ending a personal relationship with someone by suddenly and without explanation withdrawing from all communication. In simple terms: you clicked the “unfriend” button on Facebook and ignored texts for no reason. Well, you had your reason at the time. Be prepared to explain your reason. “It’s not you, it’s me” may not be sufficient. You may have had a legitimate reason for walking away from the relationship. Maybe mutual friends made a rip in your friendship, or maybe you just needed to re-evaluate your friends. There are many reasons for ending a friendship. The way you handled ending the friendship is what you’re going to have to answer to. Ghosting is not the way. It’s right there under Carrie Bradshaw’s Post-It note breakup. I assume your “ghostee” doesn’t want to be a bestie with someone that treated them so poorly. I’m not saying don’t reach out. Drop them a “hi” text and see what happens. They might just be more forgiving than an advice columnist on a Monday morning.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

PINOT’S PALETTE

PROVIDES CREATIVE OUTLET FOR ANY OCCASION WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Elizabeth Nelson, owner Pinots Palette

Grab your friends, prepare some appetizers, open your favorite bottle of wine, and get ready to be inspired at Pinot’s Palette located in the heart of Briarcliff Village shopping center. Local artists will guide you step-bystep through a session of painting while you sip your wine or whatever beverage you prefer. The studio itself is beautiful, with prominent crown molding and hardwood floors, and it houses a private party room for up to 18 people. Elizabeth Nelson was inspired to open a Pinot’s Palette in 2015 in Kansas City after she was a customer at a different Pinot’s Palette. She enjoyed it so much she decided to become a small business owner. “I wanted to be near downtown, and Briarcliff Village is just adorable,” explains Nelson. “It’s an upscale, vibrant area, and I wanted our customers to feel safe at all times. I also love that

there are plenty of other fun things for them to do here with their evening or afternoon out.” At Pinot’s Palette, sessions can be purchased for all types of occasions, including bachelorette parties, birthday parties, fundraisers, anniversaries, marriage proposal events, gender reveal parties, corporate team building events, and more. “We put a focus on team building events,” says Nelson. “It is a creative, fun experience that can break down problems the office environment presents. It encourages a positive experience in an atmosphere free of politics or a corporate mentality.”

Watson. “My first time at the studio was the result of a birthday present from a friend, and it was one of the best gifts I’ve ever received! Our instructor was a grade school art teacher, and her skill set and directions made our project easy to follow. The music and environment are great too.” Finally, the studio provides self-guided painting opportunities, so you don’t have to have a big group to get your paint on and channel your inner Rembrandt! The two-hour public class is $35 per person, and party group pricing varies, although discounts may apply to parties of 15 or more. There is a minimum requirement of eight in your party to use the private room.

Some of the items on the menu of fun at Pinot’s Palette include: Date night: Each partner paints and then the two paintings are combined for a total piece. Bachelorette/Bridal Parties: The Briarcliff studio will present a complimentary painting of the bride’s wedding dress.

The studio also hosts celebrations of life. Nelson recalls one celebration in which the woman who passed away loved winter scenes. “Her daughter selected one such scene and, in her honor, everyone painted it,” she explains. “They further honored the deceased’s memory by adding her initials to each of their paintings.”

But what to paint? “There are hundreds of paintings that can be chosen online,” says Nelson. “It’s not just limited to canvas either. Our guests can paint illuminated wine bottles, wine glasses, and more.” Would-be artists can even create a more abstract painting with what the staff call marble art, also known as pour painting. The studio has also incorporated wood pallet paintings into their collection.

Voted the best painting party by The Pitch in 2018, the staff takes pride in the points of difference from their competition in KC. “We are a more upscale experience here—from our beautiful space to using real wine glasses and fantastic customer service,” says Nelson. “Our guests can expect a great time, every time. Our staff is funny, entertaining, and talented.” Nelson mentions that it’s not unusual for guests to dance and sing along with the music while they mingle and paint. “It’s very therapeutic and allows you to get your creative juices flowing. I always tell people what happens in the art room, stays in the art room,” Nelson jokes. The guests become true believers too. “I will go again and again, and not just for special occasions,” says customer Trissie

The studio can also assist guests in creating a custom painting that features their house, dog, car, or other fun ideas.

Corporate Team Building Ideas: Mystery painting: The staff chooses the painting for the group, and what you are painting starts to emerge slowly. Jigsaw painting: Each of the paintings makes a larger combined scene. An homage to Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night hangs on the studio wall and was painted in this fashion. Collaborative: Guests paint together on one big canvas. Musical chairs: Guests move around to music and paint on whichever canvas they are in front of when the music stops.

THREE STEPS TO YOUR PERFECT AREA RUG

WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER PHOTO BY SAMANTHA LEVI

While there may not be any one rug that is perfect for everybody, it can be good to do some research when choosing the right one for you. There are as many colors, shapes, sizes, and patterns of rugs as there are personal styles, so considering the advice of a professional rug expert when making your selection can be helpful. Chris Bradford, owner of Area Rug Dimensions (and neighboring KC Wholesale Carpet) at 127th and Metcalf in Overland Park, has been working with every kind of area rug for every kind of space for over 20 years. He shares the following tips for ensuring the perfect rug selection to achieve the look you want.

Consider color.

If the rug is going in a room that’s already furnished, step into the room and walk around. Notice the colors of the walls, the furniture, and the woodwork. Consider how rugs in different colors or color themes would contribute to the feel of the room.

“One mistake a lot of people make is coming in with paint samples and fabric swatches,” Bradford says. “Trying to match a color exactly can be frustrating for the buyer, and it’s often not the color that goes best in the room anyway. Consider different color options.”

Take measurements. When

it comes to area rugs, bigger is usually better, as most people make the mistake of buying a rug that’s too small for the room. Bradford says he sees a lot of 4 ft. by 6 ft. rugs under coffee tables or next to a 7-ft. couch. “It’s a common mistake that can end up looking like a coaster for the table. Buy the rug based on the furniture arrangement,” says Bradford. In today’s popular open floor plans, where furniture is “floating” in the room rather than anchored by a wall, a good basic rule is to measure so both the front and back legs of the couch are resting on the rug. This grounds the space and ties the room together. continued on page 34

HOME CONT.

Another mistake is placing the rug too far from walls and fireplaces. “You want about 6 inches from the fireplace mantle or hearth, and 6 to 10 inches from walls,” Bradford says. “But it comes down to proportions and the space itself. You don’t want it looking like you meant to carpet the area but came up short.” Entryways typically look best with round rugs, and Bradford says that the ceiling of this space is what should dictate the rug size.

Eye ideas.

Once you have a good idea about the color and size of rug, look around for ideas and inspiration before buying. At Area Rug Dimensions, you’ll find books filled with pictures of rooms styled with unique rugs.

“It’s truly like picking out art,” Bradford says. “And you might surprise yourself. I’ve had many customers come in saying they hate oriental rugs and want something contemporary, then walk out with an oriental rug in a style or color they didn’t know existed.” The store prides itself on offering the lowest prices for customers, even lower than Amazon, according to Bradford. Take your area rug selection a step further and have Bradford’s team come out for an in-house consultation. Can’t find what you’re looking for in the store? Consider a custom design, with a turnaround of four to six months.

PRECIOUS FINDS

WHITE BUFFALO TRADING COMPANY WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

There is a theory behind why some people find shopping so satisfying. It states that in the time of hunting and gathering societies, some of our ancestors focused on the gathering part. They set out each day to find berries, herbs, roots, and other valuable commodities necessary not only for a good life, but for their survival. Fast-forward to today, and many of us do our shopping online. At the click of a button, we order clothing, groceries, toiletries—just about everything—all delivered to our doorstep. There is something to be said about human interaction, though. There is the physical exploration, the “hunt” that comes with brick-and-mortar shopping, and the satisfaction of finding unique, precious items. At White Buffalo Trading Company in Overland Park, owner Pamela Minick says that although some people do cruise through her store, quickly identifying what they like, most stay and shop awhile. “I’m constantly bringing in something new, and there’s such a wide range of one-of-a-kind pieces,” Minick says. “I have museum-quality pieces and things that even turquoise fans have a hard time finding.”

Wisconsin Roots Anyone who grew up in Wisconsin or who has spent time there knows about Wisconsin Dells. About 20 miles north of Madison, this quaint-butpicturesque town lies on the Wisconsin River in a region of glacier-carved sandstone formations. Its unique boating tours, waterparks, shopping district, and other outdoor activities are a draw for families. This is where Minick’s mom opened her Native American jewelry shop, Poor Old Patty’s, more than 30 years ago, and where Minick found her calling. “I learned so much from my mom,” says

Minick. “She had a great eye, but she also knew how to build relationships and build a business. She never gouged her customers.” Minick also learned about the U.S. turquoise mines from her mom. Located mostly in the Southwest, many of the mines have been closed due to concerns about over-mining the semi-precious stone. Some mines have even been depleted.

“It’s not about the sale. It’s how people look when they try the jewelry on and their eyes light up— that’s what I really enjoy.” “Sleeping Beauty, Dry Creek, Number 8 … the turquoise is named after the mine,” Minick says. “I can tell by looking at them where most came from. For example, Number 8 is a really pale blue color. It’s a very popular collectible. But the mine was closed in 1961, so it’s hard to find.” There are knock-offs, but luckily for jewelry- and turquoise-lovers in the KC area, Minick’s long-standing relationships with the mines and her eye for quality ensures that only the best pieces make it into her store.

Finding Love Minick’s customers are her favorite

part of what she does. She even has a specific moment with them she loves best. “It’s not about the sale. It’s how people look when they try the jewelry on and their eyes light up—that’s what I really enjoy.” On Brenda Gavilan’s first visit to White Buffalo, she purchased a squash-blossom necklace. A typical necklace of this style is crafted in silver and turquoise consisting of round silver beads interspersed with beads that look like they are blooming, all leading down to what looks like a horseshoe or a crescent moon turned on its side. “I bought my first squash necklace with White Buffalo,” Gavilan says. “Pam was amazing. A few other customers were in the store, but Pam engaged us all. She is the best!” Someone who has never been to a store that focuses on Native American and turquoise jewelry might be surprised by the variety of the stones and the ways in which they are presented. One of Minick’s museum-quality pieces is a sterling silver saddle with moving pieces, including the stirrups. She also has several hard-to-find heishi bead pieces. Made from pieces of tiny, hand-carved turquoise, these delicate strings of beads are also popular with collectors. Some of these pieces can be seen by appointment only. Although the jewelry at White Buffalo holds an ethereal beauty that almost begs to be experienced in person, perhaps an equally special aspect of the jewelry is the woman behind it, and the story she holds for each piece.

BEAUTY surgery or as simple as adding an anti-aging lotion to our skincare routine. But one of the clearest signs of aging is the gray hair on our heads. What age you are when your hair begins to gray is based largely on genetics. As we age, the follicles in our hair make less melanin (or pigment), turning our strands into gray or silver. We sat down with Leah Lasala, Beauty Brands Salon education manager and Kansas City Chiefs cheerleaders style consultant, to find out everything you need to know about going gray.

Gray hair is trending There are more silver heads out there, and they’re showing up at a younger age. Purples, blues, pinks, and yes, grays and silvers, are trending. Young women and celebrities are demanding silver before nature has its way. Take caution, though. Turning a full head of hair into a dyed silver hue takes money and time.

GRAY HAIR? DON’T CARE. WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

They say age is just a number. That’s true, it is. But aging is not a number. From the day you are born, you don’t stop aging. As we age, we seem to chase youth. We want to feel and look good. We search for ways to slow down aging— whether it be as invasive as plastic

Not just young women and celebrities are going gray. Women are letting their hair come in naturally at a younger age. The edgy “color” movement may play a role, but there are other factors for women ditching the dye. Lasala says, “I believe women want less maintenance. They don’t want to be dedicated to keeping the roots from showing anymore.” Lasala also believes women are taking better care of their skin and bodies than previous generations. The color of hair doesn’t scream an age anymore. “Women are more confident and old school rules just don’t apply. A woman letting her natural gray come in is comparable to a man shaving his head when he starts losing hair,” Lasala points out. “It’s not a big deal.”

Going gray? Here’s what you need to know.

There’s a huge spectrum of gray hair. You can have anything from a mousey gray to white-silver. Lasala admits, “Not everyone can wear gray hair. It’s not a warm color. Women with dark eyes and jet black hair tend to grow a pretty silver. Usually redheads won’t grow gray hair. Their gray will come in blonde. It depends on the woman.

Your hair should complement you, and there are ways of reaching that when going gray.” If you want to ease the transition into gray hair, babylights are delicate highlights where a stylist adds a fine gray to the ends. It’s a color technique used to mimic the subtle, dimensional hair color on children’s hair. Babylights can be applied to any hair color or hair type. The process can be done in any shade to match any skin tone. Gray hair won’t be the same as the pigmented hair on your head. Gray hair lacks shine and it’s stripped of moisture. The texture might change into curly or wavy. There are products designed to give gray hair its integrity back. The best part is you’ll never have to go back to the dye again.

Products to try:

Redkin All Soft Mega Shampoo and Conditioner: This is a good product if you’re looking to add nourishment to severely dry hair (any color). Gray hair can be unruly. This product will add moisture and keep your fly-aways to a minimum. Redkin Color Extend Graydiant Shampoo and Conditioner: This purple shampoo and conditioner is made specifically for gray hair. It brightens the brassiness of gray and silver hair with a sparkly pop. Kera Color and Clenditioner: The ingredients in this product clean, soothe, and hydrate without the weight. You can add it to dry hair for more impact or wet hair for less impact. The clenditioner comes in a range of colors. If you’re looking for something fun, try a different color such as rose gold. The color works effectively on gray hair. It also comes in clear if you don’t want to add color.

ColorWow Root Coverup: Not ready to go gray? ColorWow is a regrowth supporting product that comes in every color. It’s not a spray, it’s water resistant, and there is no wax or paraffins. The color blends well into highlights and will make your hair look thicker, too.

Talbott has been operating out of the Solera Salon and Spa in Overland Park for nearly five years, a location where you can find all your beauty treatments. She grew up in California and Hawaii, so she found a job with one of the best plastic surgeons in Honolulu. Over time, she decided this did not satisfy her career needs either. She wanted more of a relaxed atmosphere that focused on beauty and wellness, so she made the transition to The Modern Honolulu Hotel Spa in Waikiki, where she was introduced to the Eminence Skincare line. This is the same line of skincare she utilizes today. “I thought it smelled great and was

relaxing, but what I saw after the first facial I performed was transforming for me,” explains Talbott. “When you notice distinct changes in people’s skin with one facial, you know you are working with a high quality product.” Talbott took time to educate herself on the Eminence product line. “The ingredients are not sourced from chemicals, but rather from vegetables, flowers, and other plants,” says Talbott. “It has a high active ingredi-

ent, so results are fast. Plus, it smells and feels good because it's organic.” Talbott provides customized homecare plans for clients all over the U.S. as well. “Your skin changes with the seasons, because of lifestyle, skin type, age, and more,“ advises Talbott. “As such, your skin needs different things to stay healthy.” Jennifer C. is a client of Talbott’s. Jennifer explains, “Heidi is so knowledgeable about skincare, and creates a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. I look forward to my facials. My skin has never looked better!” Karen S., a long-time customer, adds, “I have truly enjoyed every skincare service I have received from Heidi. I love the products and Heidi is awesome. I recommend the services and the products she provides.” Talbott says what sets her apart is she focuses on treatment, care, and educating people on how to take care of their skin every day. “Additionally, all my products are organic,” she explains. “I’m luxury spa trained, so a facial with me is the best many clients say they have experienced because they experience more relaxation, making it a lux-

urious experience.” Clients also have the ability to delight in wellness and beauty options such as a blissful oxygen hydrotherapy bath soak or enjoy the Eminence Organic customized facial with Diamond Microdermabrasion to turn over cells and brighten and polish the skin.

What sets Heidi Talbott apart is she focuses on treatment, care, and educating people on how to take care of their skin every day. Oxygen therapy, one of Talbott’s exciting treatments, is a relatively new technology in the marketplace. It’s a skin treatment involving micro bulbs of oxygen, which exfoliate and hydrate every part of your body. Oxygen therapy allows for more energy, vitality, boosts metabolism, and can aid in bet-

ter sleep. “It’s a fountain of youth with endless benefits,” says Talbott. Four years ago, Talbott was trained and certified as a CT energy practitioner as well. She now offers a class series to promote wellness and mindfulness. Customers read a book, participate in a free five-week meditation class, and learn mindfulness meditation practices to help relieve stress, anxiety, depression, and more. “This process allows people to connect with their mind, soul, and spirit, identifying where they are currently and where they want to go,” explains Talbott. “It has been a very powerful program for me personally as well,” she adds. Another exciting part of Talbott’s spa is parents can have a relaxing day with any of the services above and spend time with their teens. The salon has a facial targeted for youth fighting acne and clogged pores. “My passion for skincare and supporting people in their mindfulness gives me a well-rounded ability to support clients above and beyond what they may expect when they first come in,” says Talbott.

GOOD TASTES

THE SWEET POTATO

IT PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS WRITTEN BY LESLI LUNDQUIST / PHOTO BY KELLY CHAMBERLAIN

Sweet Potato Breakfast Burritos MAKES 4 BURRITOS

Ingredients 2 tsps olive oil 1 small sweet potato, peeled and diced 1 small yellow onion, chopped 3/4 C tri-color bell peppers, diced 2 C packed baby spinach, roughly chopped 1 tsp chili powder 2 large eggs, beaten 2 large egg whites, beaten 4 tortillas Shredded cheddar cheese

Directions In a medium-sized skillet on medium heat, warm the oil. Add the potato, onion, and bell peppers, and sauté for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender and onions are translucent. Add the spinach and chili powder and sauté for 2 more minutes. Increase heat to medium-high. Add eggs and egg whites. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until eggs are cooked through. Divide the egg mixture evenly into center of tortillas. Sprinkle evenly with shredded cheese. To wrap and serve, fold edges in, then roll forward tightly. Option to freeze for breakfast on the go: Let egg mixture cool for about 10 minutes. Tear off four rectangles of nonstick foil and lay 1 tortilla on top of each. Divide the egg mixture evenly into the center of each. Sprinkle evenly with cheese. To wrap, fold edges in, then roll forward tightly. Wrap the burrito tightly in foil.

Yes, it’s true! Sweet potatoes pair wonderfully with many of your existing pantry items. When I ran across this recipe, I loved the thought of using sweet potatoes in a breakfast recipe in which chili seasoning and eggs were coupled for a “to-go” option for those busy mornings. It was the perfect solution to health, fantastic flavor, and ease rolled up into one delicious burrito. Be sure to invite this vitamin-rich, orange-fleshed vegetable into your breakfast routine!

Place wrapped burritos in a large zip-top freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. To serve, preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place a burrito, still wrapped, on a baking sheet and bake for 35 minutes. Use tongs to transfer wrapped burrito to a paper bag and take on the go. (Note: Baked burritos will stay warm for 15 to 20 minutes; you can eat them on the go or when you get to work. If you are reheating in the microwave, make sure to remove the foil first.)

Meet Lesli Lundquist: A passion for cooking? Nope, not really! However, when I was diagnosed with food allergies nearly five years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the wonderful dishes that can be created day to day by simply following a recipe. I have been told that I am a “cook from the pantry” type of food guru. I love to keep my pantry stocked and to cook with the seasons, give my tastes buds a challenge, and of course feed my family delicious, home-cooked meals.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

LIES I TOLD MYSELF BEFORE KIDS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

I want a houseful of kids. Birth control becomes your best friend after the delivery of your first child. Kicking legs away and saying, “I’ll get pregnant looking at it” comes after the delivery of the second.

When I have kids, my house will be clean. There’s no point picking up anything until the kids go to college. Kids and pets come sweeping in like a Kansas F-3 tornado. It’s not an F-5 because a house lifts up and drops somewhere else with an F-5. You could only be so lucky for a change of scenery.

I’ll be the hip mom wearing cut midriff tops with my teenage daughter. No. My kids will be the best dressed in school. Your kids will look homeless. As soon as I deliver a baby, I’m marching straight to the gym. Have fun with those rock hard double Ds exploding with milk. You just got paged. The baby is hungry. I said THE BABY IS HUNGRY!

We’re doing this parenting thing together. My husband will be a handson dad. Watching your husband sleep through the night for weeks will be the true test of how much you love him. It’s 3 a.m. Take his duck decoys, bow and arrows, and tree stand off Facebook Marketplace before he wakes up. The life of a breastfeeding mother is not always fair.

I’ll make sure I always have a hot date night set up with the husband. “And would you like to take a look at our wine menu this evening?” Text message from mom: Kate screaming for her mommy. She hit her head on the desk. Lots of blood. Come home now!

I want to have all girls so my house doesn’t get destroyed. The trade-

in a cage while you’re gone. Some people even leave their dogs outside all day. You can also let the dog roam free in a car with its head out the window. If you think you can let your kid hang their head out of the window, be prepared to see red, white, and blue in your rearview.

PLANTS FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT A GREEN THUMB

1 Marigolds These cheerful flowers bring a wealth of

gold, copper, and brass into your garden. They thrive in full sunshine and can withstand high temperatures—perfect for our nearly unbearable summers.

2 B romeliads These are drought-tolerant, which is

perfect if you have a tendency to forget to water your plants. In fact, these beauties only need to be watered when the top two inches of soil feels dry. Bromeliads make great indoor or outdoor plants.

3 Basil This aromatic plant is very forgiving. You

could start with seeds, or just buy an already-potted plant, put it in the sun, and water it every one or two days. Keep the plant healthy by pruning—have fun getting creative in the kitchen!

4 Kalanchoes Dare we say that over-watering is the

number one killer of the vibrant, long-lasting flowering kalanchoes? Just put these robust plants in a pot without drainage, and you’re good to go.

JAMI ROTH makeup artist

5 H ostas These perennial, leafy beauties thrive even in the toughest dry shade. Seriously super easy, hostas come in a seemingly unlimited selection of colors, heights, and textures. Plus, they develop fragrant pink, lavender, or white flowers that hummingbirds love.

6 P oppies From neon orange and red to pastel pink

and cream, the crepe-paper-like blooms require little care other than a sunny location and watering during dry spells until established.

7 Dandelions If all else fails, why not just embrace

the bright yellow blooms that naturally pop up all over the Midwest? Dandelions have a rich history in Europe as a medicinal and edible plant. They’re rich in calcium, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Not only does a serving of dandelion greens have as much calcium as half a cup of milk, but you can make wine from the flowers. Cheers!
