PUBLISHER’S NOTE

KANSAS CITY’S FLOWING FOUNTAINS As I sit here writing the Publisher’s Notes, the World Health Organization has just declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, schools and sporting events have been cancelled, and recommendations are in place to work from home and not go out if you don’t have to. I find myself wondering what to do with my kids to keep them entertained. They are in high school, so they are pretty good about entertaining themselves, but one idea that came to mind is visiting Kansas City’s gems: the fountains. Did you know there are over 200 fountains in the Kansas City Metro? I knew we were known as The City of Fountains, but I honestly didn’t realize we have that many fountains. There are fountains from England, from Italy, and from New York City; fountains over 100 years old; fountains that honor war heroes; and fountains that represent major rivers. You can learn more about the local fountains and their rich history in our Around Town article on page 10. Stay Healthy, SIMPLYkc Magazine readers.

Why does Kansas City have so many fountains? Kansas Ciy’s fountains were originally built for a practical purpose—to keep horses, birds, and dogs healthy. In 1883 the Humane Society of Kansas City was established to prevent cruelty to women, children, and animals. When animals drank out of stagnant water they became sick, so running water was implemented.

In 1904, the Humane Society built its first fountain near the west end of the intercity viaduct at 3rd St. and Minnesota Ave. The water flowed out of spigots in lions’ mouths into a tall bowl for people to drink. The overflow went into a granite basin at a height for horses

to drink, then spilled over to the street level basins for dogs. This first fountain was moved to 18th St. and Parallel Ave. In 1967 it was given to the Wyandotte County Museum. With the installation of drinking fountains, the practical use of Kansas City’s continued on page 12

HOME SWEET

KANSAS CITY HOME WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Kansas City is a hot place for real estate. With a variety of homes available, and plenty of land to the south and west for customized homes, fewer people are calling our city “flyover country” and more are calling it “home.” Homes are selling fast, with multiple offers coming in. Local realtors predict that trend to continue, especially now that we are into the busy season and interest rates remain low. It’s more important than ever to have an experienced realtor when selling or buying a home. Make sure you get what you want and

have an enjoyable experience by relying on a professional’s expertise and connections. That’s the goal of mother-daughter team Patty Parsons and Alexis Mirakian. With over 30 years of combined experience in real estate, the two have become masters of making home buying and selling successful and fun.

Courtney Pfaff recently joined the team as well. After having the perfect experience purchasing a home with Parsons last year, Pfaff became a realtor. “What I really wanted to do was work with Patty. Her professionalism and way of making the process enjoyable had an effect on me,” Pfaff says. “I knew I wanted to be a part of her team.”

Creating Excellent Experiences for Today’s Informed Buyer

Finding – and Getting – Your Dream Home

time homebuyers and “forever home” buyers, with upgrades and downsizes.

Parsons says she has seen a lot of changes in the real estate business over the decades, especially with technology. “Today, it’s more important than ever to have an experienced realtor for a positive experience,” she says.

One of the most important criteria for finding your dream home is location. Unlike outdated wallpaper, location is something that can’t be changed. The floor plan, age of the HVAC and roof, and the condition of the foundation are also key considerations.

“Every situation has its own intricacies and challenges, and that’s what makes it fun,” says Mirakian. “We’re always thinking, How can we make this easy for our client? A home is your biggest investment, so we want to make sure we help you get it exactly right.” The team provides the approximate costs of changes to the house, like an updated kitchen, and recommends reputable contacts for doing the work.

The information available through sites like Zillow and Redfin has created a more knowledgeable home buyer. Clients come to realtors knowing what they can afford and what they want. But an experienced realtor will weed out the properties that aren’t a good fit for the buyer. For example, Zillow might give clients a good idea of what they are looking for in a home, but oftentimes the pictures and information don’t match reality. “That can lead to a lot of wasted time and unnecessary frustration,” says Parsons.

The Parsons Mirakian team’s dedication to the client and attention to detail has created many customers-for-life. But every client and every experience is unique. The team has worked with local celebrities and athletes, with first-

From First-time Home to Empty Nester Home For those looking to sell a home, they have connections to quality contacts like stagers and photographers. “Both buying and selling can be very emotional,” says Parsons. “We pride ourselves on making it easy. Being part of a team is a huge benefit, because we work together to come up with the best solutions.” This dedication to the client and attention to detail has created many customers-for-life. It’s not uncommon for the team to sell someone their first house and then later an upgrade, or sell them their family house and then their “empty nest” house. “We loved working with Alexis,” Denise Majewski said. “She was super responsive to our questions and requests. She made the process so much easier and better than we could have ever hoped for. If we ever move again, we will definitely call on her.” The three agree that what makes them successful is their love of homes and their desire to create amazing, fun experiences for their clients, during what can often be a stressful time.

BE WELL

THE FACTS ABOUT ENDOMETRIAL CANCER WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

Endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system. It happens when the cells in the endometrium, the lining in the uterus, grow too rapidly. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 65,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with it in 2020. The average age of diagnosis is about 60 years old, but it is diagnosed in women under 45 as well. •H ormones: Taking estrogen hormones without progesterone can increase your risk. Your risk can also increase with late menopause, never being pregnant, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and taking tamoxifen. Birth control pills can decrease your risk because they have progesterone, which has a protective effect on the lining of the uterus. • Genetic conditions: Patients with Lynch syndrome, an inherited disease, have an increased risk of several types of cancer, including endometrial.

Diagnosis

Symptoms

Risk Factors

Most women with endometrial cancer will have abnormal bleeding. This may mean a change in periods, bleeding between periods, or heavy or bloody discharge.

The risk factors for endometrial cancer include:

“Bleeding after menopause is always abnormal and needs to be evaluated,” says Brenda Shoup, MD, gynecologic oncologist at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “For those who are premenopausal, let your doctor know if you notice anything that’s unusual, particularly if it’s prolonged bleeding or bleeding between periods.”

18

APRIL 2020

•A ge: Most women who are diagnosed with endometrial cancer have gone through menopause, but it can occur in premenopausal women as well. •W eight: Women who are overweight or obese are more at-risk for endometrial cancer. That’s because the estrogen in fat tissue can stimulate the lining of the uterus and lead to cancer growth.

If you experience abnormal bleeding, your doctor may first order a transvaginal ultrasound to examine the lining of the uterus. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, if the lining of the uterus is more than 4 millimeters thick, it means that more testing is needed. “A pelvic ultrasound can show that the endometrium is abnormally thick, but it can’t diagnose it as cancer,” says Dr. Shoup. “It has to be diagnosed with a biopsy.”

Treatment Endometrial cancer is usually treated with a hysterectomy, a surgery that removes the uterus, cervix, and ovaries.

In addition, the sentinel lymph nodes in the pelvis are removed to check for cancerous cells. The sentinel lymph nodes are the first nodes where cancer would spread. If cancer is found, other lymph nodes may be taken out to check for cancer, or additional treatment may be recommended. “By limiting the amount of lymph nodes removed, it reduces the risk of complications,” says Dr. Shoup. A hysterectomy can often be done as laparoscopic surgery. This lets the surgeon operate with small incisions, reducing recovery time. After surgery, the stage of the cancer is determined, which helps the physician and patient decide on further treatment. “The vast majority, about 70 percent, of endometrial cancer cases are early stage, and hysterectomy is all they need,” says

Dr. Shoup. “For the 30 percent of patients who have a higher stage, we recommend radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of both.”

taking estrogen alone. “Usually a doctor will make sure you’re taking progesterone in addition to estrogen in order to protect the uterus,” says Dr. Shoup.

High-dose progesterone therapy may be an option for some women who want to keep their uterus. “If your cancer is slow-growing, and hasn’t spread beyond the lining, it may be possible to reverse it with hormones,” says Dr. Shoup. “This could be an option for someone who is young, in general good health, and still wants to have children. We do monitor those cases very closely, and if we don’t see a regression in the cancer, we would still need to do a hysterectomy.”

You can also protect your health by knowing your family’s medical history. If you have multiple relatives with colon cancer or polyps and uterine cancer, speak with your doctor. “In some cases, patients and physicians may decide on a prophylactic hysterectomy as a preventive measure for people who are extremely at risk,” adds Dr. Shoup.

Prevention There are some ways you can reduce your risk of endometrial cancer. Maintaining a normal weight can help decrease your risk. If you take hormone therapy, avoid

DAVID MANICA. Owner of MANICA Architecture. Owner of The Monarch Bar. Co-owner of Verdigris Bar. David Manica is a native Kansas Citian and University of Kansas graduate. Being an architect allowed Manica to travel the world and experience different cities and cultures, but—as they say—there’s no place like home. He is grateful to come back “home” to Kansas City. In the 13 years since he started MANICA Architecture, he has been honored to lead the design of many important stadium and arena projects around the world. His firm’s most recent completed projects include Chase Center in San Francisco, Allegiant Stadium for the Las Vegas Raiders, and Lockhart Stadium for InterMiami FC. He has upcoming projects in Italy, U.K., Korea, and Japan. Locally, he’s known for being the owner of The Monarch Bar, an award-winning cocktail bar and lounge in West Plaza.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE It’s usually wherever my wife makes reservations. She has great taste, and I’m usually open to all her suggestions. But, I’m partial to The Antler Room, Blue Stem, Port Fonda, and The Capitol Grille. KC has an enviable food and beverage scene. We’re really lucky.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK Is this a trick question? The Monarch Bar is hands-down my favorite place to drink. We take great pride in curating our cocktail list, which changes seasonally (spring/summer and fall/winter), and our bartenders are so talented. Beyond that, I appreciate any place that makes a good Negroni. It’s not that difficult, but you’d be surprised.

FAVORITE SHOPPING I actually have way too much fun at local thrift stores looking for unique knick-knacks for the shelves at The Monarch Bar. I prefer to shop with my kids so I can sing “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and dance down the aisles so I can embarrass them. They are horrified, but it’s my right to do as their father.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS I believe the entire city of KC is a “hidden gem” in the world. Most people who don’t live here—or who haven’t visited—can’t appreciate it. But in the city, my hidden gems are anywhere I can find a moment of peace: in the middle of Lake Lotawana at sunset or a quiet drive through Mission Hills in the fall. And I love Loose Park. It was my early morning run for years when we lived near it, and I do miss it.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and the sculpture park in the morning. Crossroads in the afternoon. A patio on the Plaza on a nice evening. The Monarch Bar at night. That sounds like a good day to me.

HOW DO YOU KNOW

WHEN THE HOUSING MARKET IS RIGHT? WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK

The dream of purchasing a home is becoming less of a distant dream and more of a reality for Kansas Citians as the housing market continues to look optimistic in 2020. But for some, the question still lingers in their mind, How do I know that the market is right to buy a home?

There is no easy answer to this question, but we spoke with Alexis Mirakian, realtor on the Parsons Mirakian team of Better Homes & Gardens, about how to know when the time is right to purchase your home.

downside is there are fewer homes.

What’s more important than timing? The reality is there are more important aspects to pay attention to than the timing of the market. One of these is location.

How prepared are you? The first question a buyer should be asking—before trying to time the market or find the deal of a lifetime—is How prepared am I to buy a home? “As a buyer, don’t get in over your head,” advises Mirakian. People can be pre-approved for a lot of money, and if they can’t realistically make the monthly payment, or the house needs updating and improvements and they can’t afford those, it can be disastrous. You need to decide beforehand what your maximum budget is and stick to it. “People often want to get in a specific home, but maybe have to go above asking price

to get in it,” explains Mirakian. This may cause you to push your budget. Being financially responsible in this competitive market is essential.

What is the best time of year to purchase? It is sometimes said that spring and summer are the best times of year to purchase a home, but Mirakian explains that all times of the year are a good time to buy, there are just pros and cons to each. “Spring is a great time to buy because there is more inventory,” she says. “You’re just going to have more competition as a buyer.” Mirakian explains that buying a house in the winter can be a great time to buy too because there is less competition, but the

“In an area that is in high demand, the value of the home is going to only increase over time because that’s where people want to live,” says Mirakian. If you find a home in a good school district, near popular shops and in an area where people maintain their homes well, it may not matter what time of year you are purchasing. “In the highly desirable areas, homes may not come up for sale as often, there will be multiple offers, and they will typically go over asking price,” she says. If you find one that you like and fits all your requirements, it is better to jump at the opportunity, regardless of what time of the year or how the market is doing. continued on page 24

HOME CONT.

One of the things Mirakian does is if there is a buyer who wants to be in a specific area, has a set budget, and knows what they’re looking for, she talks to her network of agents and asks if they have clients getting ready to sell in that area. “In highly desirable areas, homes go really fast,” she says. “So being the first one in the door is definitely an advantage. That’s also the advantage of working with a realtor in the area who knows the agents instead of trying to time the market.”

What does 2020’s market look like? Despite other factors being more

important, the housing market is still a good factor to consider when buying a home. Thankfully, the 2020 housing market looks bright for Kansas Citians. Interest rates are exceptionally low and look like they will continue to stay low. “Everyone’s saying that the interest rates are going to stay low in the election year and they’re going to keep it safe with the interest rates where they’re at,” says Mirakian.

same. We have little dips, but we never go crazy,” she says. This makes the Kansas City market a safe, stable market to invest in. “I’ve had buyers who purchased a home and had to relocate for work a year later. But they got into a highly desirable area, and just living there a year made a profit because of how home values are going up each year,” adds Mirakian.

Also, Kansas City is still an affordable place to live and looks like it will stay that way. “When the coasts do these dramatic market swings where they’re high and low, Kansas City stays about the

THERE’S WHAT IN MY NAIL POLISH? NOT AT THIS SALON

WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Britten Moyers’ first experience at PAINT Nail Bar was exactly like yours—as a client. Upon first impression, she knew it was different. “Right when I walked in, I could tell it was different,” Moyers says. “It didn’t have that smell; it was clean. The people were different. They seemed to really enjoy what they did. The energy was … right.” When her husband’s job brought Moyers’ family to Kansas City, she knew if she couldn’t bring PAINT with her, she had to duplicate it. “It’s one thing to duplicate a space, but how do you find the right people to make it special, to make it …” Moyers trails off as she glances around the salon. “The brands we use and the products we carry are phenomenal, but the real secret to PAINT is the team.” Moyers says there was one thing that was especially instrumental in recreating the experience she had at the previous salon. “We came across incredible employees,” Moyers says excitedly. “We’ve built an incredible team of women. They are phenomenal nail techs, and they are a ton of fun to be around. It gets loud. It’s fun.” In the salon, a catchy pop playlist blasts tune after tune, from One Direction to Khalid. “Sometimes I feel a little guilty when my husband asks, ‘What did you do all day?’ I really should just say I got to hang out and talk with amazing women,” Moyers laughs before scrunching her eyebrows together and putting on a faux-serious face. “But I worked really, really hard today.”

5-Free • Before entering the beau-

ty industry, Moyers was in the Marines. Despite the differences, there are some similarities too. “Being in the Marines, I didn’t wear makeup. I didn’t paint my nails. My career has

changed, but now I’m helping arm my team and my clients with information,” Moyers says. “We’re trying to make sure our nail techs are not only incredible at their craft, but they can provide accurate information to their clients, from the importance of cuticle care to why formaldehyde is harmful.”

know we keep our clients safe.” And clients are getting the hint. Hannah Herwig, who is a PAINT Nail Bar client, said PAINT has “... a friendly staff providing professional services in a spa-like environment … and non-toxic products are a plus!”

The Space • Rows of golden ban-

“Never in a million years did I think I would be lucky enough to be living in Kansas City. I feel very grateful—I am beyond blessed.” There is a lot of misinformation in the beauty industry. That’s where PAINT comes in. Moyers explains that all of PAINT’s products exclude (at a minimum) the top five chemicals known to be carcinogens: formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, camphor, and formaldehyde resin. “When we say our products are 5-79 free, we can stand by it,” Moyers says. “That includes not only our gel, but our regular lacquer as well.” In addition to toxin-free products, PAINT also maintains high standards of sterilization (with a hospital-grade AUTOCLAVE) and no whirlpool pedicure chairs, where bacteria flourishes. “Sterilization is a big deal to us,” Moyers says. “It’s important to us to

gles, a curated selection of clothing, and makeup as clean as the nail products themselves heighten the PAINT experience. Moyers says the boutique side of the salon makes the experience more enjoyable for customers. “Our clients don’t rush in and rush out. They like to stay and catch up,” Moyers explains. “We’ve developed real relationships with these women. It’s fun for them to come in and shop around.”

Experience PAINT •

Are you ready to experience this hybrid salon hangout? It’s best to plan ahead. “We love walk-ins, and we love to take them when we can,” Moyers gestures at the nail tech stations. “But these girls are incredible, so they book out in advance.” Booking an appointment, which you can do online or over the phone, is your best bet to score an opening at this hot spot. “Never in a million years did I think I would be lucky enough to be living in Kansas City,” Moyers says with a smile. “I don’t think I ever imagined I would open a salon and have the team we have. That really has been a gift. I feel very grateful—I am beyond blessed.”

BEAUTY

THE LONG AND SHORT

OF HAIR EXTENSIONS WRITTEN BY SUZANNE LAMMERS

D

Do you wish you could put an end to bad hair days? Whether you want more length, more pop, more color, or full-on Jennifer Lopez hair, hair extensions can give you the luxurious locks you’ve always wanted.

Mandy Garavaglia, extension specialist, master colorist, and owner of Hairbymandg (@hairbymandygsalon). “Clients come in to help grow their hair out or to disguise hair loss, but for the most part, once they get extensions they can’t go without them.”

Dating back to ancient Egypt, Cleopatra, pharaohs and royalty first wore hair extensions to show wealth, status, and wisdom. Today, hair extensions are a huge part of fashion and pop culture available to anyone wanting to transform their hairstyle.

Some of the most common extension methods are tape-in, hand-tied, and keratin bond. Tape-in extensions are applied with adhesive double-sided tape onto your existing hair and work well for fine or thin hair. They are lightweight, designed to lay seamlessly in your hair, and can be reapplied up to three times with 6-8 weeks of wear per application using high quality hair. You’ll need to wait 48 hours before you work up a sweat or wash your hair, and avoid using conditioner or oils on your scalp.

If you want to change your look for a special occasion or a night out, clip-in extensions are the fastest and most affordable option. If you want something more versatile and longer lasting, an extension specialist can assess your natural hair, desired look, and ultimate hair goals to help you choose extensions that fit your budget and lifestyle. “I tell my clients at the first appointment that it’s very addictive,” says

Hand-tied extensions, also called sewin or braided, have been around the longest and are great for blending with your natural hair because the wefts (like a thin curtain of hair) are hand-sewn around the head in rows

under your existing hair to add color, dimension, or length. They can be reused, are the easiest to maintain, and last about 8-10 weeks per application.

actual hair extension can be purchased separately or included in the price of application. Despite the cost, it can be a worthwhile investment.

not good quality. With proper care and maintenance, your extensions will stay beautiful and lasting without damaging your natural hair.”

Keratin bond extensions use a patented protein polymer bond that mimics the molecular structure of keratin found in human hair. The extension is applied with a tool resembling a heated tong to bond the synthetic keratin to your hair. These extensions are best for thick, coarse hair and can last 4-6 months per application.

Synthetic hair is the least expensive. Because it’s made from manufactured fibers, though, it isn’t heat resistant and can’t be curled or straightened without risk of burning or damage.

After experiencing hair loss as a teen, Hill tried tape-in extensions and loved them so much she became certified. Today she does more applications than any other Lifespa stylist in the country, and lights up when she talks about the transformations she sees.

“To ensure the best results, make sure you have your extensions done by an experienced and certified professional. It’s also important to follow the recommended maintenance,” stresses Garavaglia, who has been doing extensions for 20 years. Cost varies depending on the application method used, the quantity of extensions, and the quality of hair. Prices can range from $200 for a simple extension application to more than $1,000. The

Remy hair is the most expensive and the highest quality. The term remy refers to human hair that has not been processed. It is sourced mainly from India and China, with virtually no tangling or shedding because the cuticles are kept intact and all face the same direction. Because it’s human hair, applying dyes and styling is not an issue. “Your extensions are only as good as the quality of hair extension,” advises Ryann Hill, elite stylist and extension specialist at Lifespa in Overland Park. “You can have the best person doing it, but you won’t love it if the hair extension is

“Clients get extensions to fix a bad haircut or hide hair loss and thinning caused by aging, hormonal issues, or health reasons. Others simply want to grow their hair out or were born with thin hair,” says Hill. “Regardless of the reason, extensions can make you look and feel more youthful. It makes my day to see my clients so happy they cry when they see the finished results.” Now that’s a good hair day!

7 7 THINGS

WAYS TO DOWNSIZE YOUR POSSESSIONS

1 Practice the Marie Kondo Method’s no.1 rule. Does it spark joy? This could feel odd at first, but fo-

cusing on being mindful of what you keep and bring into your home can help you stay in a minimalist mindset year-round.

2 Give yourself (and your house) rules.

When you live as a minimalist, you have more freedom to spend less time and money on stuff, and more time and money on what really matters—like your family. Giving your household a set of rules that fits your lifestyle best will help ensure your methods stay put long after the burst of motivation departs.

3 D onate to Goodwill or thrift stores around KC. For some reason, the act of deciding you don’t actu-

ally need something feels radically uplifting! The best part? You’ll be helping someone else out who truly needs the items you don’t.

4 Use under-bed storage. In this case it’s okay to take

a page from your kids’ playbook and store items that aren’t readily needed (think seasonal items) under your bed, like

vacuum-sealed bags of blankets or matching boxes filled with winter sweaters.

5 Function is everything.

A 20-piece capsule wardrobe? Less loads of laundry! A dining room table that can fold into a shelf? More after-dinner dance parties! When you own less, you start to realize how much more room you have to be yourself.

6 Organize by category.

This one is for all you serial color-coders out there! Matching dinner plate sets, a colorcoded closet, and even a rainbow bookshelf are just the starting point. They say You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone, but really the saying should be, You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s all in one big massive pile.

7 Maximize space.

If you had to live in a box, you would get creative with your space because you had to. Now you can do it because you want to! Test hanging drying racks or lofted beds (and enjoy all the extra space in the process). Downsizing? Done!

KACIE WHAT’S HIS NAME AGAIN?

My son’s name is Benjamin. My son’s friends are calling him Ben. We have called him Benjamin since he was born. We agreed we would never call him Ben. Is there a way to get the kids to stop calling him Ben and call him by his real name? Should I write the teacher to help enforce the name Benjamin? My husband thinks I’m overreacting.

First of all, one of the best things about becoming a parent is you get to name your child. Maybe you didn’t pick the last name. Or the middle name that was passed on generation to generation. But parents do get the final say on the birth certificate. You could give your baby another last name, if you really want to. You named your son Benjamin. It’s his official name on government documents. He will forever be Benjamin, but ... I’m going to assume your son doesn’t mind being called Ben if his friends continue to call him Ben. I’m also having a hard time picturing how your conversation will go with the teacher: “Hey! I’m Benjamin’s mom, not Ben’s mom. I’d like you and the class to call Benjamin by his real name, not Ben. I’m his mom, so what I say goes.” I don’t mean this in a harsh way but ... give it up. Every year your son gets a little more independent. You will not be able to control his identity. You cannot push your son back into your womb. Your son is his own person. He’s not an extension of you. If he is okay with Ben, then let the friends call him Ben. When he’s in high school, he may be called by his last name. Or just “Hey, B.” Nicknames are just that. Nicknames. Of course, you can call him Benjamin. You’re his mom.

They have a wide spectrum of options including shags, oriental, contemporary, and transitional. know the right colors, textures, patterns and styles for all areas. “We are able to figure out the perfect rug for a customer’s space, even in very unusual circumstances,” Bradford says. They offer consultations both in your home and at their showroom. Whichever option you choose, they will help narrow down your selection to find the right custom rug for you.

“We are able to figure out the perfect rug for a customer’s space, even in very unusual circumstances.” If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, take a look inside their showroom. It is nice, but not intimidating; you will immediately feel welcome. You will find a variety of rugs to choose from, but you are not limited to what is on display. If you’ve found a rug you like online or have a Pinterest board full of inspiration, feel free to bring images with you to show the staff.

Their prices are also part of their draw. “Customers find that our pricing is lower for the same rugs they find on the internet or at other stores. We even have a ‘30 days after you buy lowest price guarantee,’” explains Bradford. If you’re looking for something beyond a rug, there is a flooring store

PARENTING MATTERS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

E

veryone who is a parent has been there. You bring your new baby home from the hospital, set the car seat in the living room, and you stare at the tiny sleeping human. Now what? Babies aren’t sent home with manuals. You might get a few flyers on how to breastfeed and who to call if there’s a medical problem. But with as many books as there are on parenting, there isn’t one that rules them all. One thing is for certain—kids will misbehave. They’ll cry if something isn’t going their way. They’ll have meltdowns in the middle of the grocery store with all eyes on you. Kids grow up and push their boundaries, making way for their own independence. We were all teenagers once; we know how it works. As a parent, you can’t control your child’s behavior, but you do have an influence. Everyone knows that consistently praising your child is better than punishing hard-to-manage behavior. But going through with parenting praise all the time is nearly impossible.

Amy Buckman is a licensed clinical professional counselor based in Overland Park. She explains that praising a child’s behavior is a struggle because we are hardwired to ensure they avoid danger rather than to praise positive behavior. “It doesn’t come natural to think, Today is going to be the day that I sing and dance when my child does something well,” she says. “But the good news is we can change. It’s 90 percent awareness and 10 percent change.”

Use the term “earn” rather than “punishment.”

When used in a negative sense, punishment can have a direct impact on someone’s belief about themselves, their self-worth, or their long-term self-esteem. If you say, “You can earn your screen” vs. “You can lose your screen,” there is a power shift and the child can feel empowered to do well. If a parent reacts to their child’s emotional needs with words of praise, the child may understand better. For example, tell them, “Great job at shooting hoops!” or do acts of service such as a snack or a hug. If your child has

a temperament of stubbornness, boundaries are important. Set them up front and be prepared to follow through.

Catch your child off guard.

Interrupt your toddler when they are playing to tell them they’re doing a good job playing quietly. It’s okay to stop your teenager while they are doing their homework and tell them you’re proud. Watch their face when you say, “I noticed how well you are playing with your brother. You have earned 30 minutes extra bed time” or “20 minutes extra tablet time” or (for your teen) “$10 gas money.” But don’t break the bank. Positive parenting is meant to build healthy emotional relationships and a home life for your family. Research shows that kids remember memories such as dinnertime, family bedtimes, and family vacations more than monetary rewards.

Be a house of “yes.”

Choose your words impeccably. Use fewer words, but mean them. Try to think of your house as a “house of yes.” If your son or daughter wants to play at Joey’s but hasn’t picked up their clothes off the floor, say, “Yes, you can go to Joey’s as soon as the clothes are in the laundry basket.” That is a positive statement, and gives the child empowerment. If you say, “No, you should have picked up your clothes,” it is not only aggressive communication, but also makes them feel like they are not good enough. This can slowly hurt their spirit.

Don’t be ashamed/afraid to ask for professional help.

help. Let a counselor offer a safe place or an arena where they can coach healthy communication or parenting options. Joy Berry books are great tools for opening up communication with the little ones. Transforming the Difficult Child by Howard Glasser gives great ideas for positive parenting. Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls by Lisa Damour provides practical and actionable steps. And He’s Not Lazy by Adam Price gives eye-opening statistics on teens. If something is not going well, talk about it with your child. If things are going well, talk about it! The little bundle you brought home doesn’t have a manual, but you will learn one way or another.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

I SWEAR I’M NOT DRUNK WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

F

acebook is a strange little place. Almost everyone is on it. Most people use it to show off their family. A few share articles or memes. There are definitely people who sit back with popcorn and watch the comments blow up when Nosy Neighbor Nancy complains about people leaving their sprinklers on when it’s raining. Some people check in at restaurants with a group of girlfriends. Or they might post a perfect date night photo with #BestHusbandEver to make everyone feel a tiny bit bad about themselves on the couch, alone, scrolling Facebook while watching Netflix. I don’t post many pictures of my family. I never check in unless I’m at the DMV and wondering Am I in hell? No, I use Facebook in a different way. I use Facebook for the words. The storytelling. I might post

memes that make me laugh, but I’m mostly there to tell my story. I swear to God I’m not drinking. That’s how my Facebook post started one night in January, on the couch, alone, scrolling Facebook while watching Netflix. My posts continued: I’m not doing “Dry January,” but I’m not drinking. I’m curious what exactly the neighbors saw when I got off my couch, tripped out of nowhere and slammed my body into the hardwood floor. My toe got stuck in my PJ pants when I stood up, and I fell. I don’t understand how a five foot, ten inch woman stands up and trips over her own too-short PJ pants. They barely reach the top of my feet. I’m a baby giraffe. I fell like a wobbly baby giraffe and shattered my

knee, and now I can’t put weight on it. This is how I die. Alone in my apartment. My kids aren’t even here. I don’t even have a dog to be the next doggie hero in People magazine, finding me help while I type away on my phone. I kind of hope someone saw me fall and sees me stranded on the floor. I also kind of hope they didn’t see the tall woman trip on her own pants and army crawl to her phone like an addict. I mean, who’s not addicted to their phone? So here I am. Alone. On my floor. My wobbly baby giraffe knee is probably shattered. I can’t feel my toe. I just googled senior life alert buttons, but a Facebook post is basically the same thing. Send help. Bring me a drink. I swear I’m not drunk.

GOOD TASTES

SIMPLE SORBET WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON PHOTO BY ADRIENNE MAPLES

As days begin to get longer and the temperature warms up, we yearn for foods that are easy to prepare and leave us as much time as possible to enjoy the spring warmth and each other. The memory of picking ripe blackberries among the wild, thorny bushes that grew along the roadside threatening to scratch our forearms, busy buzzing bees swirling about, is one that always surfaces when I prepare this simple blackberry sorbet. Bursting with flavor, dazzling to behold and cool on the tongue, it is the perfect finish to any springtime meal.

Blackberry Sorbet YIELDS 1 QUART

Ingredients

Directions

3 cups fresh blackberries, rinsed

Combine blackberries, sugar, and lemon juice in the bowl of a food processor or blender and puree until smooth. Add lemon juice, heavy cream, and raspberry liqueur and mix until just combined. Pour into the canister of an ice cream freezer, and freeze according to manufacturer’s directions. Remove the airtight container, cover, and freeze until firm.

2/3 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/3 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons raspberry liqueur or more, to taste
