PUBLISHER’S NOTE

BRING ON THE SNOW Call me crazy, but I love the seasonal changes we get here in the Midwest. Sure, I could do without the cold temperatures. It’s really the snow that I love. I grew up in southwest Kansas and the winters there always brought windy, drifting snow. It seems like huge, school-canceling blizzards would hit us at least once a year. We knew the snow was coming because Mom would head to the local Dillons for milk, bread, and the ingredients to make Rotel cheese dip (the ultimate snow day treat). As kids, my sister and I would search the perimeter of our fence line to find the tallest drifting snow—always over our heads and sometimes up to 6 feet tall—and begin planning and building our tunnels and forts. Over the next couple of days, we’d spend all our free time with neighbor kids playing in those snow forts. It seems like it’s been years since Kansas CIty has had a big snowstorm—or even a measurable amount of snow. I’m sure I’m not the only one hoping this is the year we get that big snowstorm and a couple days off from school (and possibly even work)! If we don’t get those snow days, at least we’ll still have other reasons to celebrate, with Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, and Random Acts of Kindness week taking place Feb. 13-19. These comforting holidays can entertain us no matter what weather is headed our way. Whatever is in store for us, we hope your February is warm and sweet.

VALENTINE’S DATES NO RESERVATIONS NEEDED WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

V

alentine’s Day is typically about roses, chocolate, and a nice dinner out. And a Hallmark card. Don’t forget the Hallmark card. This is Kansas City, after all. All of those things are very nice, but why not change it up with your Valentine? Drop the dinner reservation and make a fun date out of Valentine’s Day. Just don’t forget the roses.

There are many ways to express love. Besting your beau at board games is a pretty good one. Cardboard Corner Café has over 800 tabletop games for you to play—for free! They have everything from traditional games like Scrabble and Scattergories to cooperative games, educational games, and deductive reasoning games. Cardboard Corner Café has a waffle selection on their menu that is almost as expansive as the games. There is a full bar and a coffee menu as well. Come for a quick, 15-minute game or

kcculinary.com They say love goes through the stomach. KC Culinary Center of Kansas City does love well. Whether you want to learn to cook or maybe want your partner to learn to be a better cook, KC Culinary has a class for you. Each class is taught by a professional chef, and you’re right there cooking alongside the pro.

February classes include “Kick-Butt Steak and Seafood,” “La Paella: The Ultimate Spanish Party Dish,” and “Friday Night Sushi Party!” There are many more choices, so head to their website and find a class to share on your date night.

Play Bingo at Boulevard’s Beer Hall boulevard.com Valentine’s Day is on a Monday this year, but why not celebrate a day early? It’s Sunday Funday at Boulevard’s Beer Hall. Every Sunday, the Beer Hall hosts bingo. The doors open at 10 am and bingo starts at 11 am. Grab your date, grab a beer, and grab a daub-

er. Bingo is free and there are plenty of prizes and snacks. When bingo is over, stick around and check out the beer hall. There’s plenty to do and more beer to drink. After all, it’s Sunday Funday.

Spend the Day at Bar K barkdogbar.com If you haven’t been to Bar K, you probably don’t have a dog. But that’s the beauty of Bar K. You don’t need a dog to play with other peoples’ dogs. Bar K is a restaurant and off-leash dog park. It’s open year-round, even in the cold February temps. There’s an outdoor bar with heaters in the winter. You can’t help but smile and have a good time at Bar K. Go ahead, bundle up and run around with the dogs at Bar K. If you have a dog, third wheel the dog on your date too.

Play Pickleball at Chicken N Pickle chickennpickle.com Whether you live in the Northland or somewhere along U.S. 69 South, there’s a Chicken N Pickle near you. Pickleball (and really good food) is the rage right now. Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Chicken N Pickle has courts in-

doors and out for you and your valentine. Chicken N Pickle was conceived in the Grand Cayman Islands over cold beer and jerk chicken. A love for wood-fired chicken and the game of pickleball led to the 2016 founding of Chicken N Pickle’s flagship location in Kansas City. Chicken N Pickle quickly expanded into other markets, including a new one in Overland Park.

Take a Day Trip to Weston, Missouri westonmo.com Take a mini vacation with your love. Take a day trip to the historic Weston, Missouri. Weston is the “best small town in Missouri,” and it’s less than an hour away from Kansas City. Founded in 1837, Weston feels like a simpler time, but it’s loaded with local-crafted beer, wine, whiskey, cigars, and roasted coffee. It’s also an antique lover’s dream with the antique shopping. It’s even better if you reserve a sweet B&B and make a weekend of it. There are plenty of museums to explore and diverse restaurants to try.

BALLOONS, DENTISTRY AND JUST PLAIN FUN

WRITTEN BY PAMELA SPRADLIN MAHAJAN / PHOTOS BY JAMI BOWMAN

A

t LeBlanc & Associates Dentistry for Children, founded and owned by Dr. Michael LeBlanc, high quality pediatric dental care and a positive experience are the primary focus. The practice began with these goals in mind and has continued to grow and serve the community since. In dental school, Dr. LeBlanc was amazed by the candor and resilience of children, leading him to a career in pediatric dentistry. From the beginning, he knew it was important to make sure all aspects of the practice were geared toward creating a positive dental experience for kids. That focus has been manifested over the years at LeBlanc and Associates Dentistry for Children in the form

of excellent dental care, open communication, and positive reinforcement through prizes and rewards for the patients. Dr. LeBlanc has created a great team of colleagues, all board-certified pediatric dentists, who are like-minded in these goals. Rebecca Ferns, DDS, Emily Meyer, DDS, Casey Rhoads, DDS, and their colleagues provide comprehensive dental care for children ages 0-18, including those with special needs. The doctors are board certified and trained in a variety of techniques to help children feel at ease. “We provide specialized care that is more focused toward children,” Dr. Ferns says. “Everything’s just catered toward the kids.”

As pediatric dentists, they received special training in developmental psychology, allowing them to make the children in their care as comfortable as possible. The dental hygienists also receive special training in how to put children at ease. From the design of the offices to the tone of voice used by the staff and doctors, everything is geared toward the comfort of their young patients. “All of my three kids run toward the dentist office,” says one parent. “They love the atmosphere and getting a balloon at the end of it. Wonderful staff—the doctor explains everything. My daughter, five at the time, had a cavity filled and she didn’t even blink. She really wanted that balloon. This place is the best!”

In addition to fun features such as movies, each child receives a balloon, ice cream, and a goodie bag of toothbrushes and toothpaste after their visit. Regarding the ice cream, Dr. Ferns laughs, “It keeps them coming back—it keeps the parents coming back sometimes too.” Though the field of pediatric dentistry comes with its rewards and challenges, one of the biggest rewards is seeing children who were once frightened of going to the dentist start to look forward to their visit. Dr. Rhoads recalls the joy of seeing children who were at first fearful happily give her a high five several months later. “It’s really cool to see their transition just by being in a place where they feel comfortable and not scared,” Dr. Rhoads says. Dr. Meyer shares the same feeling. “Some parents will tell us, ‘Oh, they’re so excited, they’ve been waiting weeks for this appointment,’” she says. “That’s nice to hear and nice to know that you’re creating that positive association.’” A primary focus of the doctors is making the experience as positive as possible for both the child and their parents. Dr. Meyer says, “Every child is different in what they require to feel comfort-

able. We custom-tailor that for each child based on our experience and what the child needs.”

“One of the biggest rewards is seeing children who were once frightened of going to the dentist start to look forward to their visit.” In the field of pediatric dentistry, there are a lot of different options for treatment, Dr. Rhoads explains. They talk with parents about how there isn’t only one treatment option. They explain the parent’s other options, the risks and benefits, and how the parent should feel comfortable, whatever they’re choosing for their child. The LeBlanc & Associates team strives to ensure parents have a solid grasp of the treatment options so they can make the most informed decision. In addition to Dr. LeBlanc, Dr. Ferns, Dr. Meyer, and Dr. Rhoads, the prac-

tice includes Dr. Brent Church, Dr. Kyle Pederson, and Dr. Mary Le. The practice has four locations with offices in Kansas City, Olathe, Overland Park, and Prairie Village. Each doctor practices at every location, depending on their daily schedule and the particular needs of their patients. The doctors and staff are also involved with several charities, including TeamSmile, Mission of Mercy, and various breast cancer walks. Beyond the thorough dental care they provide, the dentists at LeBlanc & Associates say working with kids is just plain fun. Children often don’t have the same negative associations with the dentist that adults do, so they’re more open. Plus, the doctors are able to form wonderful bonds with their patients. Dr. Ferns has a young patient who loves to guess her nail polish color before every visit. “She always gets excited. I have to hold my hands behind my back and she’ll guess what color it is,” she says. It is this joy and personal attention the team aims to share with every patient. “Pediatric dentistry is a special subset in dentistry where we get to have fun, and hopefully the kids feel that,” Dr. Rhoads adds.

BEAUTY

HOW TO ACHIEVE A STUNNING SUMMER GLOW

IN THE MIDDLE OF A KC WINTER WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER

F

ebruary. The month of love, warmth, and affection—but the reflection in your mirror may be giving you a more ... erm … ghostly reality. When you look good, you feel good— and you love better. While we may not be able to book a romantic getaway to somewhere sunny and 75, we’ve bottled up the perfect potion to get you a glow stat. (Bonus: no airline miles needed!) Discover how you can achieve the best bronze right out of your bedroom, bathroom, or anywhere in between!

Is Sunless Tanning Safe? What exactly are spray tans? Sunless at-home tanning products include active tanning agent dihydroxyacetone (DHA). When DHA comes into contact with your dead skin cells on the outermost layer of skin, the result simulates a tan and usually lasts for several days. DHAs are the only FDA-approved sunless tanning ingredient for external application to the skin. The FDA states that DHA “shouldn’t be inhaled or applied to areas covered by mucous membranes, including the lips, nose or areas around the eyes because the risks of doing so are unknown,” (ac-

cording to the Mayo Clinic).

Take a Test Run. If this is your first time using sunless tanning products, you may not want to jump straight into a professional spray tan. Instead, grab your mask and head to your local drugstore (or power up your laptop for some online shopping). It’s likely your store will feature a wide variety of products for you to choose from, including lotions, serums, mousses, towelettes, and liquid drops. Make sure to do some research before you hit the aisle, and test on a small patch of skin before applying.

Bring in the Professionals —Literally! Need a quick glow ASAP? Don’t panic-apply 30 layers of product. It’s time to bring in the big guns! Tara Green, owner of TanTara Mobile Airbrush Tan, answers all of our at-home inquiries. “Since the COVID pandemic, I have made many changes to my in-home service visits,” Green shares. “I have gone to sanitizing all equipment between appointments using a fresh continued on page 18

BEAUTY CONT. tent, which is wiped down with anti-bacterial wipes and switched outside between clients.” Green also uses disposable paper in the bottom of each tent, disposable hairnets, sticky feet, and a face mask and surgical gloves during each service. When it comes to pre-tan prep, you don’t want to do too much. Green explains the same preparation goes for whether you are using self-tanning products or getting a spray tan from a professional—that includes exfoliating no later than 24 hours in advance of your spray tan and showering no later than four hours prior. “The reason the 24-hour exfoliation is important is when you are exfoliating your skin, you’re also removing the skin’s essential amino acids, which can take 24 hours to regenerate after an exfoliation,” Green explains. “Since a spray tan is nothing more than a chemical reaction in the amino acids of your dead skin cells, you need those amino

acids to replenish so you don’t come out streaky or patchy, and so the spray tan has something to interact with. Otherwise your tan may not process well at all.”

plains. “Products like deodorant, lotion, makeup, and moisturizers—even conditioner from washing your hair— can be enough to prevent the proper absorption of your tan.”

However, showering fewer than four hours prior to your spray tan is the most common mistake Green sees. “Water is slightly alkaline and knocks off the pH balance of your skin,” Green explains. “After a shower, it takes approximately three to four hours for your skin to return to its normal pH level. For clients who don’t have time to properly prep their skin, I do have professional skin prep products I use on every single client so their results are guaranteed every time.”

Exfoliate! Exfoliating anywhere from 48 to 24 hours in advance of your tan can help provide you with the best results, helping your tan last, on average, 10 days.

Golden Rules Clean skin will get you the best results. “Bar soaps and moisturizing shower gels can leave heavy, waxy barriers on your skin and prevent the absorption of your tan,” Green ex-

Protect your tan. One of Green’s favorite products to recommend post-tan is Hempz lotion or products like Baby Bum and mineral-based sunscreens. Since spray tans do not include any sun protection, you should always wear a topical SPF as well, she notes. And if you’re dreaming of a romantic night relaxing in the hot tub, skip out. Water is a natural exfoliant. “The more you are exposed to water post-tan, the worse your tan will be for the wear,” Green says. “And any time your skin is wet you should pat it dry—never rub.”

SELLING YOUR HOME IN JOHNSON COUNTY ALL PACKED AND NOWHERE TO GO WRITTEN BY SHANNON E. ROESGEN

T

o say there is currently a seller’s market in Johnson County real estate would be an understatement. During the first quarter of 2021, homes in Johnson County sold for an average price of $412,000. This can be partially attributed to low interest rates and the COVID pandemic. Realtors say they cannot remember a housing market that has ever been this competitive. Inventory is low. Demand is high. Realtors have been flooded with new clients. Because of the pandemic, residents have been forced to spend more time at home and are therefore looking for their perfect dream house: a house with a home office, a home

In 2021, life sounded like a sweet song for the sellers in Johnson County. For the buyers, however, the song may have sounded more like a sad and desperate ballad. Why move? Perhaps a new job has brought you unexpectedly to the Kansas City area. A parent’s health has declined and you need a larger home with accommodations to meet the parent’s needs. You are getting married. You are getting divorced. You lost your job. You got a promotion and a substantial

raise. Your family is growing, and you will need an additional bedroom for the nursery by summer. Whatever the reason, it’s a safe bet your current home would easily sell. But where, oh where, will you be going? Chris Rowe, a realtor with Cedar Creek Realty, believes that is a very valid question. This incredible seller’s market can be a dangling carrot for homeowners, but the answer to the question, “When would be a good time to sell your home?” is a complicated answer that is uniquely tailored to fit each homeowner’s individual needs. “When considering the sale of their own home, the question that arises

for most is, What happens if I sell?” says Rowe. “Am I going to be able to find a home in this market, and if I do, am I going to overpay for it? For many, the answer has been new construction and building their dream home, which may not have been financially possible before.” Rowe continues, “The last couple years have brought many challenges for buyers and sellers alike. Among them has been a shortage of resale home inventory across Johnson County and unforeseen increases in building materials. However, sellers have also seen home values go up dramatically and interest rates at alltime lows.” One strategy realtors are communicating to clients is to look below

what they want the asking price to be. This enables the buyers to offer more than the asking price (even $50,000 over the asking price) to ensure they get the home they want.

ers who are willing to take the risk in the sale of their own home, especially those who have the patience and willingness to consider new construction for their next home.”

Clearly, homes are appreciating rapidly in our city, but is it worth it to sell? Another thing to keep in mind is capital gains taxes. One must live in a home for at least two years to be excluded from paying capital gains taxes. Even in Johnson County, earning equity in the home doesn’t happen overnight. Realtors typically advise homeowners to stay in the home for several years to see significant appreciation.

However, as Rowe explained, every seller’s situation is unique. It would be wise to carefully assess what is motivating the desire to move, how long you have lived in the home, and the most important question: “Where are we going to move?”

Rowe concludes, “I think that as we look forward into 2022, the market will continue to reward those sell-

In this hot seller’s market, the exit strategy is key. Buyers need to ensure that it is possible to make Dorothy’s motto—There’s no place like home—come true, and not be forcibly changed to the response, “We used to have a home. Now we live in a hotel.”

SHARING LOVE AND CREATING CONNECTION THROUGH FLOWERS

s COVID continues putting a damper on many in-person gatherings, finding ways to connect can be tricky. One way to show your love from a distance and give someone a boost is with a flower delivery. In fact, there seem to be few ways as effective at creating that warm, fuzzy feeling in the recipient. One shop offering this long-distance connection is Flowers by Emily. Located in Leawood, the shop is owned by Emily Fyten. Initially, Fyten had no plans of becoming a florist. “I knew I wanted to do something creative, but I couldn’t really decide what,” she says. In college, Fyten explored several art-related subjects, including drawing, painting, and art history. Yet she couldn’t figure out exactly how to make a career out of any of them. When Fyten began working at a flower shop part-time, something clicked. She realized she had found her calling. Fyten started her business creating flower arrangements for weddings out of her home. The business grew and she opened her first storefront in 2007 at 151st and Nall in Overland Park. In 2010, she relocated to Park Place in Leawood. Since then, Fyten has expanded to a larger location in Park Place.

Flowers by Emily creates arrangements for occasions such as funerals and weddings (the shop does about 30 weddings per year), but the majority of their business comes from everyday events. These daily bouquets are for birthdays, anniversaries, or even just a quick pickme-up to oneself. “I absolutely love the arrangements from Flowers by Emily,” customer Jill McCarthy says. “So beautiful! And yes—you can send flowers to yourself! It’s a mood booster.” Customer Eric Reyhle adds, “I tasked Flowers by Emily with delivering a customized bouquet each day for seven days in a row for my mother’s 70th birthday, and they couldn’t have delivered any better or been more pleasant and professional to work with.”

“Sending a customized bouquet is a wonderful way to bridge the gap of physical distance or lift someone’s spirits.”

In addition to fresh flowers, the shop offers a selection of gifts, plants, succulents, and dried flowers. They also sell custom-made moss walls, crafted of 100 percent real moss and preserved flowers. These handcrafted pieces can be displayed indoors or in a covered outdoor area, and require no maintenance. Flowers by Emily partners with two local businesses—Blue Chip Cookies and Panache Chocolates—and can deliver their items along with the flowers. Since fresh flowers arrive at the shop daily, what is available on Monday may

or may not be available on Friday. Fyten encourages customers to pick a price point and color palette and let the shop take care of the rest. This allows customers to receive the best bouquet using the flowers available. Fyten’s original intent was to work in a creative profession, so it’s no surprise her favorite part of the job is being able to create something one-of-a-kind. “My favorite holiday to design for is Mother’s Day because I love that time of year for flowers,” she says. “There’s usually a vast selection of spring flowers available and

Customers can call the store to place an order or visit their website. If you are needing something the same day, they can often have something ready within an hour. Sending a customized bouquet is a wonderful way to bridge the gap of physical distance or lift someone’s spirits. Shopping at Flowers by Emily may also take you back to a simpler time, as it did for one customer: “I grew up in one of those amazing old neighborhoods that had a butcher shop, convenience store with eggs, flour and basic groceries, pharmacy, and florist nestled among the beautiful homes. Flowers by Emily reminds me of that flower shop.”

Regency-era designs are currently having a major comeback, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that many brands embraced puff sleeves this season—think a modern-day Bridgeton-inspired dress, lace and ruffled tulle. Romance is alive and whimsical in 2022. But clean and simple isn’t going anywhere. Use the juxtaposition of adding a very chic and sleek reception look to your wedding day ensemble.

WHAT, WHERE

Meet Emily Brown Who: Meet Emily Hart, KC’s very

own premier bridal designer. Emily proudly operates her flagship Emily Hart Bridal boutique in Overland Park while simultaneously designing her nationally beloved bridal line, Emily Hart Collection. When she’s not in the shop, you’ll find her at home on her small hobby farm in south Overland Park.

What:

Emily Hart Bridal offers Kansas City brides something more than the most beautiful gowns in the Midwest. It’s about the experience. Emily wants her shop to feel like home from the moment you walk in the door. Get cozy on the sofa with your BFFs while they pour you a glass of champagne and introduce you to your dream dress. The bridal business has changed, and they’ve shifted along with it to offer brides the same excellent Emily Hart experience that KC brides have always loved. Their mission statement has always been one of inclusivity and kindness, but the hardships of the last two years have encouraged them to dig deeper. They are proud to serve all communities of brides and wedding participants. The shop serves as a safe space for every individual wanting to look and feel their absolute best on one of the happiest days of their life. Every BODY. Every BRIDE.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACES TO DINE AND DRINK I’ve recently had some incredible meals at Tailleur on Main Street. It’s approachable French food at its absolute best! Not to mention, one of the most beautiful spaces in Kansas City! Save room for dessert and a French press. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS It’s hardly a hidden gem anymore, but I love cruising the OP Farmers Market on the weekend. Our family picks up fresh organic produce

to use throughout the week and it puts a smile on my face to support local farmers. But my absolute favorite hidden gem lately is Gigi’s Vegan and Wellness Cafe in Westport. Stop by and treat yourself to a cold-pressed juice or hop in the infrared sauna while you’re there! FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE OUTOF-TOWN GUESTS I’m a homebody at heart. We love having friends and family gather on our farm for meals and special occasions, so when we have guests we head home. My husband is a phenomenal chef and I make a mean cocktail! Nothing better than watching a Kansas sunset on our back porch. WHY KANSAS CITY? Kansas City has always been home, but the growth and electricity in our city over the last decade has really made me fall in love with my hometown. This is a city of artists and creatives, and I’m just so pleased to be a part of it. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to embrace the food, music, and culture our city has to offer. Step out of your own neighborhood. There is so much more out there!

OFFERING INSPIRATION FROM THE COMMUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY WRITTEN BY SHANNON E. ROESGEN / PHOTOS BY JAMI BOWMAN

“A fun and artsy boutique featuring pre-loved designer clothing, local handmade goods, and fine art.” When the owner of Lulu’s Boutique was selling the business in 2018, Jennifer Bricker Pugh said, “Why not?” and purchased it! “My kids and I have always been thrifters,” says Pugh, and she loved the idea of owning and promoting a small business in the community.

“Lulu’s is an environmentally friendly boutique featuring pre-loved designer and vintage clothing, handbags, shoes, and accessories,” explains Pugh. “We also have an amazing gift shop filled with a large array of locally made jewelry, gifts, and fine art, as well as several national gift brands, including Blue Q and Whiskey River Soap Company.”

#chooseused. This is a very familiar term to Gen Zers. Our children’s generation is educated about not only social justice issues, but environmental safety issues concerning the future of our planet. Recycling not only water bottles, but articles of clothing is a part of a Gen Zer’s weekly repertoire.

Lulu’s offers clothing from the community for the community. There are hundreds of pieces that are high quality designer goods and are in impeccable condition.

“We would like to thank our loyal customers for all of their support during the pandemic.”

High end fashion is very expensive and it may not be in line with everyone’s budget, especially those trying to support a family. But at Lulu’s Boutique, you can find high end fashion at reduced prices, and often the items are half or more of the price of retail. Lulu’s Boutique also offers a wide variety of high end designers, including Anthropology, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry, just to name a few. “Customers can also sell their trendy, name brand clothes to Lulu’s Boutique and get cash or a 50/50 split for consigned clothing,” adds Pugh. This aligns of younger

with popular trends generations, such as

Not only is Lulu’s Boutique a consignment shop, it is also a venue for local artists to exhibit and sell their work. “As of now, I have 25 local makers who show their work inside Lulu’s,” says Pugh. “We offer candles, mugs, ceramics, and lots of jewelry. I give them all a little space to promote their work. I love the ‘Shop small, shop local’ handmade narrative,” she explains. Lulu’s offers many original, creative gift ideas for you, your home, or your loved ones. If you are looking for fresh ideas or unique gifts that you can’t

find just anywhere, Lulu’s Boutique is the perfect shopping destination. Pugh is an artist as well, and customers can view her works of art at Lulu’s Boutique. “I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to fill people’s homes with joy through my artwork,” she says. “An artist’s mind is constantly filled with doubt about their work and vision, but when we sell our work, the pride and gratitude that is felt is indescribable. Although the urge and passion to create far transcends the sale, it gives me a sense of validation that I am indeed right where I should be—creating work that brings happiness to others,” explains Pugh. Lulu’s Boutique has been voted BEST OF KC by The Pitch for the past two years in a row. Pugh says she is beyond grateful for not only the recognition, but also the customer loyalty during the past two years—years which have brutally affected many small businesses. “We would like to thank our loyal customers for all of their support during the pandemic,” says Pugh. Lulu’s Boutique is located in Mission, Kansas. Hours of operation are 11 am6 pm, Tuesday-Friday, and 10 am5 pm on Saturday.

GOOD TASTES

TEA FOR TWO WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON PHOTO BY MELANIE MCDOWELL

Kansas City—and the Midwest in general—is known for its four seasons. But did you know there is also a season known as “Engagement Season,” the period between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, in which 40 percent of engagements happen?

This season includes four of the top five “days” that proposals are made: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, and Valentine’s Day. Birthdays may also be included in the Engagement Top 5. With all the proposals made and weddings to plan, caterers experience a surge in inquiries to cater the wedding reception, engagement parties, and the flurry of prenuptial celebrations hosted by families and friends. One of my favorite bridal parties to cater is a bridal tea, a hybrid version of a bridal shower and high tea, including savory finger sandwiches, traditional scones, and miniature desserts that are as delicious as they are beautiful. Traditional cucumber and watercress

tea sandwiches rank at the top of my list of favorites, followed by a tarragon chicken salad tea sandwich. Old fashioned? Maybe. But it is sure to please at a bridal tea, ladies luncheon, derby party, or any event where one could feel emotions that are traditional or sentimental. Tips for Tea Sandwiches •B utter both top and bottom of bread for each sandwich using unsalted sweet butter to help filings “stick” and to keep bread from getting soggy. •S andwiches should be small—just a few bites each. •B read crust should always be removed completely. • Allow 4-6 pieces per person.

Cucumber Watercress Tea Sandwiches MAKES ENOUGH FOR 2 PEOPLE

Ingredients

Preparation

1/2 cup sweet butter, softened

Mash butter with fork. Stir in coarsely chopped watercress with wooden spoon. Spread liberally on both sides of bread. Layer cucumber slices on half of bread slices, sprinkle with salt and pepper, top with remaining slices of bread. Cut sandwiches in half diagonally, and then cut each half into two pieces (four triangles per whole sandwich).

1 English cucumber. Wash, dry, score lengthwise with tines of fork to create decorative ridges, and slice very thin. Lay on paper towels to absorb excess moisture and gently pat dry the tops (don’t substitute standard cucumbers; they contain more liquid and larger seeds, making for a soggy sandwich) 1 small bunch fresh watercress, rinsed and spun dry, leaves picked and very coarsely chopped (about 1/2 cup) Salt and coarse ground pepper to taste

The sandwiches may be assembled a few hours in advance and stored in an airtight container or on a serving plate. Cover with damp (not wet) paper towel and wrap with plastic wrap to keep from drying out. Store in a cool place or refrigerator.

12 slices Pepperidge Farm white sandwich bread, crusts evenly trimmed. (May use a canape or biscuit cutter.) Cut into 1-1/2-inch or 2-inch rounds, about the same diameter as the cucumber. The goal is to not have the edges of the cucumber extend beyond the edges of the bread rounds.

Tarragon Chicken Salad Tea Sandwiches MAKES ENOUGH FOR 2 PEOPLE

Ingredients

Preparation

1-1/2 pounds poached or roasted chicken breast, skin removed, shredded into small bitesize pieces

In a medium mixing bowl add chicken, salt, and pepper lightly, then add green onion, celery, tart cherries and fresh tarragon. Toss with fork.

3 green onions, sliced thin

Combine sour cream, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper to taste and stir into chicken mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours. Correct seasonings before using.

1 rib celery, cut lengthwise into pencil strips, sliced crosswise into very thin slices 2/3 cup dried tart cherries, roughly chopped 1/2 cup lightly toasted pecan pieces

Use as filling for tea sandwiches between two layers of white or wheat bread, biscuits or pate-choux shells.

3-4 tablespoon fresh tarragon leaves, chopped 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup mayonnaise salt and pepper to taste

THE ONGOING MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES OFDOES COVID-19 YOUR CHILD NEED COUNSELING? WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

2020

and 2021 presented challenges that many of us experienced for the first time in our lifetime. From feelings of fear about the future and supporting our families to the isolation of being stuck at home or even quarantined, the “new normal” was anything but normal. Losing loved ones and not being able to say goodbye or be there in their final hours added an even more significant emotional challenge. The stress and uncertainty created by the COVID-19 era have not escaped our children either. The pandemic has many children struggling to cope mentally and emotionally. “Childrens’ mental health is suffering. Young people have endured so much throughout this pandemic. While much of the attention is often placed on its physical health consequences, we cannot overlook the escalating mental health crisis facing our patients,” says American Association of Pediatrics president Lee Savio Beers, MD, FAAP. Although they face the lowest mortali-

ty rates from the various strains of this deadly disease, today’s youth still face challenges borne from the virus—they certainly are not immune to that. Our children have had to deal with the stark reality of loss via the death of loved ones. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, from April 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021, over 140,000 children in the U.S. experienced the death of a parent or grandparent caregiver to COVIDrelated complications. Childhood and teenage years are crucial for social development, educational development, and physical growth. All three of these areas have been significantly impacted by the coronavirus. Staying home from school and being stranded from friends, even with social media and mobile phones, caused many students to feel isolated, anxious, and depressed. Homeschooling with a parent or tutor created extra tension and stress for both parties. Being “stuck” inside is detrimental to physical and mental health. Finally,

children in food-insecure homes suffered even more dire consequences. Even with most children back in school, many restrictions and issues remain in place while this virus continues to manifest and attack our society. So how can you help your child as the pandemic rages on? First, shore up family time. Have meals together, exercise together, and play together. Watch movies and listen to music together—play board games and cards. Family equals security. Your children need to feel safe. “The antidote to any of life’s challenges will always be your relationship with your child. This connection comes from a home where feelings are supported and where everyone feels seen and heard,” says Catherine Craig, licensed specialist clinical social worker. “This sense of safety and emotional support is the basis for a child’s belief that they can do hard things. They can face these challenges. This is life.” Second, communicate regularly with

them about what is going on in the world, and keep an optimistic attitude, even dealing with today’s realities. Third, stay in touch with your child’s pediatrician and consider therapy for your child or family members together to get through life’s current challenges. The challenges your child faces right now may have long-term effects. This situation is an opportunity to model the right way to get through a crisis and value the support of having positive, supportive relationships with family and friends. Nurture a sense of optimism, resiliency, and a fighting spirit in your child. A family therapist can help with this message. Finally, stay in touch with your child’s school. The teachers, counselors, and administrators spend a great deal of time with your child and are positive influences. It’s natural for kids to feel fear, sadness, and isolation at certain times. Still, the prolonged nature of the restrictions this virus causes may be putting your child into an “unsafe” situation. The rise

of teenage suicide is something to be aware of—learn the warning signs. If you are new to the concept of therapy, here are a few things to keep in mind as you choose a family counselor. • Confirm the potential counselor’s degree and credentials. • Ask your pediatrician or primary care doctor for a referral. • Make sure the potential provider takes your insurance. • Make sure both you and your child feel comfortable talking to the counselor. • Ask friends and family for referrals if you are comfortable doing so. • You can also check online reviews. If you are the slightest bit concerned that your child is struggling, the most important tip of all is do something. Counseling is a viable option, and there are plenty of resources, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Association of Pediatrics, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

KACIE CAT DAYS OF WINTER OR DOG DAYS OF SUMMER? I held off from the 2020 pet adoption craze. But now I’m seriously considering getting a cat or dog—or kitten or puppy—for myself. My kids are grown and we’ve never had a family pet. I had a cat when I was a kid. Which one should I rescue?

Oh, this might be my favorite question to date. First of all—thank you for rescuing! All animals are great and need a home, but rescuing one just makes me smile. I am a big fan of both species. I’ve had multiple kittens, puppies, dogs, and cats. Here’s the breakdown: younger animals will be more work. In general, puppies and kittens take a bit more work than adopting a mature dog or cat. They will all need potty training. They all like to get into things and possibly destroy your belongings. Puppies and kittens are great because you can train them young, but they will require a lot of training. Here are the major differences between cats and dogs: Get a dog/puppy if you’re an outdoorsy-type. Dogs need fresh air and regular walks. It’s also where they use the restroom. So even on those cold 5 or 10-degree days, you’ll be outside for some part of it. Dogs are not solitary animals. They need interaction. So if you’re gone all day, a dog wouldn’t be a good fit. But if you have the space and the time, you’ll be rewarded with a faithful lifelong “good boy” or “good girl.” Get a kitten/cat if you have limited space. Cats do not need to be walked or taken outside. They’re solitary animals. They do enjoy interaction with humans, though, and can be the perfect nap partner. You’ll have to stay on top of cleaning a litter box and maybe hide anything on counters that can be swatted down at 3 am. Cats are also great for being left alone if you’re gone all day. They’re capable of taking care of themselves. Cats are affectionate, relaxing, and entertaining pets. Whatever you decide, SIMPLYkc magazine welcomes your new family member!

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

WON’T YOU BE MINE, ME? WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTO BY JAMI BOWMAN

Okay, okay—we get it. February is about love. It’s about saying I love you and showering your valentine with roses, chocolates, and red hots. Am I the only one who likes red hots? Most of us know Saint Valentine was a saint who had something to do with love. He’s also the modernday saint who allows us to buy a new pair of shoes without guilt because our kid needs a Valentine’s box for their class party.

Valentine’s Day puts a focus on romantic love. I’m not going to write something boohoo-ing about my lack of “in sickness and in health, till death do us part” valentine. Divorce allows you to find new love. Romantic, sure. But there’s also love of self, love of freedom, and love of career. By the time I was 30, I was married with a three-year-old and a six-year-old. Being a young mom has its advantages. The sleep-deprivation, exhaustion, and babysitters are years behind me. I’ll be an empty nester in five years. I’ll never say I’m done parenting, but turning 44 with an 18-year-old and a 21-year-old is a great reward for giving up “the selfish years.” The selfish years include building an entry-level career after college, saving and then blowing money on international travel, taking tequila shots with strangers at 3 am, racking up a list of men you’ve loved (even if those men were for one night only), and doing shrooms before a concert with girlfriends. But, no—my selfish years don’t include those stories. If they did, this column would be much more fascinating. I wish I was more interesting than a divorced 40-year-old mom of two daughters.

nipples, greasy hair, begging a toddler to shut her eyes, crying, taking selfies with my kids, watching friends on Facebook live it up in Miami taking tequila shots with strangers, spending the little money I had on diapers, being lonely, and wondering what I wanted to be when my kids grew up. Time moved exhaustingly slowly in my twenties. I know that what I write is open for reader criticism, and many of you are thinking, But you have two beautiful daughters, Mama! I do. I don’t regret having kids at a young age. My “selfish years” are getting close, if they’re not here already. This year my valentines are my kids (they’ve always been my kids). But they’re also my newfound freedom in my apartment that I made my home. I can have wine and popcorn for dinner and no one is there to give me a side-eye. I can save money for a solo trip to a spa in Arizona just because. I can focus on my career and learn from those 20-year former 20-somethings on how to make a name for myself. I don’t have small children to distract me from being a single, working mom. I’m in love with my selfish years. This version of my selfish years just comes with two young women watching.

A Not-So-Ordinary Book Discussion

STORIES OF STRENGTH IN SOLITUDE WRITTEN BY TIFFANY KILLOREN

Books are like movies; sometimes we want to laugh and other times we reach for a story that makes us grab a cozy blanket and cry into our ice cream. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, some embrace the holiday with all of its hearts and romanticism, while others shy away from a day that can make loneliness all the more pronounced. A firm believer that any love has to start from within, I’m dedicating this month’s column to stories about inner strength amidst isolation. Leaving equally-profound impressions, the following books (one fiction and two non) are stories of quiet strength and lives robbed of their potential. These stories will touch your heart for reasons unrelated to conversation hearts and Cupid’s bow. If you want to embrace the quiet in these cold winter days, curl up with the following and your favorite blanket. Oh, and go ahead and grab that ice cream.

What She Left Behind (Ellen Marie Wiseman, 2013) Some books just hit you hard, and this one left a longstanding impression on me. A story within a story, this novel travels backand-forth between a young girl struggling to come to grips with a family tragedy who unknowingly opens the door to memories in an abandoned asylum. Long ago, another young woman found herself there for loving a man her family didn’t approve of, labeled insane to avoid acknowledging her free will. Both young women share a connection decades apart as one struggles with her imprisonment and the other confronts the figurative—albeit protective—walls she built around herself. This book touched me in so many ways and is a go-to when I’m looking for a gift for the readers in my life.

The Missing Kennedy (Elizabeth Koehler-Pentacoff, 2015) Many consider the Kennedy family the U.S. version of the British royals, but there are secrets hidden within Camelot’s walls, and so much sadness. Rosemary Kennedy, sister of the then-future President, was lobotomized at the age of 23 and kept out of the public’s eye. Written by the niece of one of her caretakers, this book describes Rosemary’s life and answers many questions people have regarding the events leading up to her procedure—and the many years she spent in solitude after. A tough read about a decision that most of us could never comprehend, I felt like acknowledging Rosemary’s story was, in some small way, recognizing her significance in this world and a legacy every bit as important as the one left by her powerful family.

A Stolen Life (Jaycee Dugard, 2011) There is nothing easy about this read. This story, told by the victim herself, is unimaginable. Kidnapped at 11 years old, Dugard’s story about her captivity, abuse, and eventual rescue is one that many remember hearing on the news in a moment of shock, and then relief, after she was found and given back her freedom. But there is so much more to this story. Her survival, despite a system that repeatedly failed her, speaks to a strength that many don’t have and an ability to carve a life for herself and her daughters behind walls built to keep the world away. No, the story is not a light read, but doing so acknowledges her trauma in a way she deserves. Sometimes people just need to be heard, and we honor them by listening.

APP OF THE MONTH

FOREST APP

HELPS WITH DAILY FOCUS

The gist: If you find it difficult to focus, Forest is the app for you. It works as both a timer and a game with the mission of motivating you to dive into your work. When you really need to complete a task, open the app and plant a seed. While you work, a tree will grow. If you give in to distractions and leave the app early, your tree will die. By using the app often you will be able to create your own forest. The idea is that by seeing this forest grow as you complete tasks, you will feel motivated to keep going. You won’t be as tempted to

quit if you know the result of losing focus is your tree withering away. The app partners with Trees for the Future to plant trees in the real world. Users earn virtual coins they can spend, which allows donations to be made. So far, over one million real trees have been planted thanks to Forest’s users. In order to download Forest you will have to spend $1.99. Paying a small fee to download the app isn’t a bad thing, though, as it will likely motivate you to use it more.

Did You Know? Elephants eat over 600 pounds of food each day? The ongoing pandemic has profoundly affected the volunteer efforts and tourism to Elephant Nature Park, an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center in Northern Thailand. You can support these efforts (as well as supporting a local artist) by purchasing a print with the Photography for a Cause campaign. Half of the proceeds on fine art prints will be donated to ENP to help offset some of the costs to feed, care for, and protect the elephants, dogs, cats, as well as the many other creatures at this incredible rescue in Chiang Mai, Thailand. www.melaniejoi.com/pfc for more information.
