PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Cruising for Christmas Lights The holiday traditions we cling to most as adults are usually the ones we enjoyed most as children. For some people, that might mean pine trees covered with popcorn tinsel. For others, the holidays may be incomplete without an afternoon of decorating gingerbread houses. For me and my sister, the one thing that made Christmas … well ... Christmas was bundling up with blankets and hot cocoa and piling into the car to find those rare neighborhood light display gems. And when we found those gems, we were ecstatic. We didn’t have to go far to find truly special displays. The homes in my neighborhood went all out. The blue-and-white house on the corner with a wrap-around porch topped their roof with Santa’s sleigh, complete with reindeer and Santa himself holding a list of “good” children’s names. That list always changed to include the names of the kids living in the neighborhood. It was such a joy to see my name up there! And I’m sure I amused my parents every time we drove past as I pointed out that I was already on that “good” list. In a world overwhelmed by coronavirus, we are all searching for COVID-friendly activities. During this Christmas season, finding special light displays could be one of those special memories you build for your children—while socially distancing. In this issue, you can even learn more about the Country Club Plaza’s 91 year tradition of holiday lights on page 44. From all of us at SIMPLYkc Magazine, happy holidays. We hope they are wonderful for you and your families.

AROUND TOWN

STAY TUNED

LISTEN LOCAL WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

Let’s be honest—you probably won’t read this whole article. But what if it was read to you out loud in your car or on the speaker while you cleaned the house? And the voice was smooth and easy to follow? You could continue with your life while listening to the magic of audio storytelling. (You should read this whole article, by the way.)

T

hat’s what these local podcasts do. They focus on different subjects, but they all have Kansas City in common.

The Generation Why Two friends, Aaron Evans and Justin Habel, discuss theories and share their opinions on unsolved murders, controversies, mysteries, conspiracies, and true crime. The Generation Why podcast began with jury duty. In 2012, Habel was called in for jury duty for a first degree murder trial. “This experience shattered my preconceptions of everything I thought I knew about the court system. I wanted to shine a light on this and tell the world. Meanwhile, Evans wanted to discuss other questionable cases such as the Michael Peterson case. The idea was to question society and the systems we put our faith in,” Habel explains. In the “Kansas City Firefighters” episode, the friends discuss a massive explosion in 1988 that killed six firefighters. After some time passed, locals in the area were arrested

DECEMBER 2020

for unrelated drug charges which turned into questionable confessions. Five people ended up being charged and convicted of the crime, but there are still huge questions about who was actually at fault.

State Your Line Two brothers, Kevin and Danny Ritz, cover all things Kansas City on both sides of the state line. Each episode features a new guest who is doing something interesting in Kansas City. The State Your Line podcast was born on Saint Patrick’s Day by two brothers while drinking green beers. The Ritz brothers realized there wasn’t a “What’s happening in Kansas City” podcast, so they created one. The idea of “Kansas City loves Kansas City” started State Your Line. Danny says, “We saw the pride people had in Kansas City by their Heart KC shirts and by choosing to eat and drink local. We thought, We should be talking about this and to all the local makers who have seen this civic pride boost their business.” If it’s about Kansas City, it’s on State Your Line. The brothers’ laid-back personalities interview guests such as Colleen Kelly, owner of Kelly’s Westport Inn; Kathy Nelson, president of the Kansas

City Sports Commission; and Mayor Quinton Lucas. State Your Line has been so successful that it recently teamed up with Let It Fly Media podcast network.

Chew Diligence The James Beard Award-winning food journalist Jill Silva and award-winning storyteller and 41 Action News anchor Lindsay Shively come together to go beyond the plate to the people, places, and cultures of Kansas City. There’s no doubt Kansas City has some of the best food in the country. Shively was quick to realize Kansas City needed a food podcast. As luck would have it, Silva left the Kansas City Star where she was the food editor for 25 years, and met one of KSHB’s podcast produc-

ers. The producer introduced Silva to Shively, and Chew Diligence was born. Chew Diligence is an unscripted conversation with chefs, distillers, brewers, bartenders, pit masters, and artisan food makers talking about topics as diverse as fermentation, food waste, food halls, and the changing technology of barbecue. “We left the studio feeling touched, emotional, even exhilarated with what we learned after the ‘History of KC Barbecue’ episode,” Shively says. But Kansas City has much more than barbecue. Silva says, “For an episode that will tug at your heartstrings, listen to the interview with Strang Hall’s chef Anourom Thomson, who arrived in the

U.S. as a six-year-old and named his restaurant in tribute to a brother he lost on the journey.”

The History Chicks Two women. Half the population. Several thousand years of history. Any resemblance to a boring history class is purely coincidental. The creator of Downton Abbey and the creator of The History Chicks each read the book To Marry an English Lord by Carol Wallace. One was inspired to create Downton Abbey, the other to create The History Chicks. After Beckett Graham read about the Edwardian American heiresses who went to Europe and married into the aristocracy, she tried to find a podcast to learn more about the women. There wasn’t a long-form biography show that met her expectations, so she created one. She asked a local on-

line friend, Susan Vollenweider, if she would be interested in doing a podcast about women in history, and The History Chicks was born. For over ten years, The History Chicks has been posting an episode every two weeks. Each episode explores the complete life of a woman in history. Vollenweider says, “When we’re interested in a woman we casually begin to research her—maybe read a book and a couple articles. Once we put her on the schedule, we obsess over her.” Graham and Vollenweider’s personalities complement each other so well that it’s nothing like a boring history class.

MASSAGELUXE IS HERE

TO GET YOU THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Many people find it difficult to relax and quiet their minds while dealing with everyday responsibilities such as work and family. But taking time to slow down, relax, and let go of stress is vital to living a full and happy life. MassageLuXe in Overland Park, owned by entrepreneur Rahul Patel, is the perfect place to go for relaxation and rejuvenation. This exceptional luxury spa brand prides itself on offering a uniquely indulgent experience in a relaxed, luxurious, and calm environment. Here you’ll find more than just high quality massages at an affordable price. They also offer facials, wax-

ing, and specialty services. “MassageLuXe is not just a relaxing place to go for time away from everyday life. There are other benefits to our services as well,” says Patel. Receiving regular massages can boost your health and wellness drastically by relieving stress and anxiety, improving circulation, and reducing pain. Serotonin—the

key hormone in stabilizing emotions—also increases while receiving a massage. This increase will allow you to feel happier, get better sleep, and even improve eating and digestion patterns. At MassageLuXe they combine cutting-edge technology with traditional massage methods. The most common type of massage they

offer is Swedish. If you’ve never had a massage before, this is a great option for your first visit. Beyond their standard options, they offer specialty massages such as deep tissue, prenatal, hot stone, aromatherapy, sports, and more. They tailor your massage to your particular needs to ensure you have the best experience. Professional facials are also great for your overall wellness. They lower stress, detoxify the face, and in some cases even prevent aging. The facial treatments at MassageLuXe will make you feel like a new person. Some of their popular facials include Biolight, microdermabrasion, and seaweed. They even offer a back facial service that is designed to cleanse tough to reach spots while targeting clogged pores, back acne, and dehydrated skin. The welcoming and knowledgeable staff at MassageLuXe in Overland Park are happy to match you with

the right services for your needs. “We currently have 10 massage therapists and two estheticians. They are all licensed, educated, and certified with both the City of Overland Park and the Kansas Board of Cosmetology,” explains Patel. The staff pride themselves on caring about clients as individuals and always aim to make sessions relaxing and enjoyable.

“MassageLuXe combines cutting-edge technology with traditional massage methods.”

While clients can receive services sporadically, MassageLuXe also offers packages and membership options. These range from $65 to $115 a month depending on what you want. There are many levels designed to fit different needs. These memberships have no contract or commitments. Clients can even add specific services onto each visit, such as masks and foot scrubs. “As a personal assistant I’m on the go constantly,” says Wendy from My Girl Wendy. “MassageLuXe is where I go for relaxation and pampering. My favorite appointments start with the hydro massage table before my Swedish massage and finish with a seaweed facial—the perfect package.”

With the holidays fast approaching, this is the perfect time to visit MassageLuXe. Not only can they help relieve some of the stress that goes along with the holidays, they also have you set when it comes to purchasing the best gifts for your loved ones. They have great promotions available with gift card purchases. Buy Two Get You Free is one of their more popular deals. With the purchase of $200 worth of gift cards you can receive a massage or a facial for yourself. If you’re seeking peace and comfort in the midst of all of this chaos, look no further. It’s never too late to start practicing self-care. Be sure to ask the staff about their great holiday gift card specials!

BE WELL

WHEN MENTAL HEALTH BECOMES AN EMERGENCY WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

In 2017, there were 4.8 million visits to emergency departments with mental disorders, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental as the primary diagnosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). When someone experiences depression, anxiety, substance abuse issues, or any other mental health concern, it’s important to reach out for help. In serious cases, that need may become a medical emergency.

mental health care in the past, or when they need immediate care, the emergency room can be a starting point to get help.

“A mental health issue can become an emergency when it becomes a safety issue,” says Ben Sundling, DO, an emergency medicine physician at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “If someone is worried that they’ll harm themselves or others, then that’s always an emergency situation.”

“The emergency team can provide a safety net, particularly for those who don’t know where to turn,” he says. “We’re always available to provide care for the whole person—including behavioral and physical health. We also want to understand what their health needs are and make sure they’re medically stable before helping them get established in therapy.”

Someone with a mental health condition may already have therapists or behavioral health support in an outpatient setting, says Dr. Sundling. But in cases where they haven’t sought

When a patient comes to the emergency room with a mental health condition, the health care team will first ask screening questions. This includes whether they feel safe and

whether they have issues with substance abuse. “That’s the first stepping point—to determine whether we’re dealing with a medical complaint or a mental health complaint,” says Dr. Sundling. “Sometimes it’s not that cut and dry, and there will be components of both.” The team will complete a physical exam even when the issue seems to be related to mental health. “We will do basic blood work and check vitals to make sure there isn’t an underlying medical cause that’s affecting their mental health,” says Dr. Sundling. “For instance, we make sure there’s not an electrolyte issue that’s contributing to depression.” At AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, continued on page 18

BE WELL CONT. once the patient has been medically cleared, the emergency team contacts behavioral health specialists at the hospital, and they do a thorough interview with the patient to get to the root cause of the issue. The hospital has the benefit of a robust behavioral health program that provides help for emergency room patients whenever needed, says Dr. Sundling. The specialists talk to the patient and family and determine what kinds of treatment are needed, including outpatient or inpatient therapy. They’ll also discuss community resources and determine how they can best stay safe. “They make sure that you and your family have a number you can call if you start to feel the same way again,” he says. “They may also talk about things you can do to center yourself and help with the thoughts you’re having until you can get help.” While mental health issues may be in-

creasing, including emergency cases, more people are willing to talk about them and to get help, says Dr. Sundling. “In the past, many patients felt like they couldn’t talk about it, and it may have been unrecognized when we saw them in the ER,” he says. “It’s so important for our patients to know that they can come to us for help, and they don’t have to suffer in silence. By talking openly, we can help them get the help they need.” For more information about behavioral health at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, visit AdventHealthKC.com.

WHAT, WHERE

Meet Jen Mann Who: What:

Jen Mann is a New York Times bestselling author, award-winning blogger, and speaker. Jen Mann is best known for her wildly popular and hysterical blog People I Want to Punch in the Throat. She’s been described by many as Erma Bombeck—with F-bombs. Jen is the author of the New York Times bestseller People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Competitive Crafters, Drop-Off Despots, and Other Suburban Scourges, which was a finalist for a Goodreads Reader’s Choice Award. She is also the mastermind behind the New York Times bestselling I Just Want to Pee Alone series. Need a white elephant gift for the office party? Jen’s book Working with People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Cantankerous Clients, Micromanaging Minions, and Other Supercilious Scourges is pretty much perfect. Jen is married to the Hubs and is the mother of two children whom she calls Gomer and Adolpha in her writings—she swears their real names are actually worse.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE My favorite place to eat is Cactus Grill in Leawood. It’s the perfect place for our family to eat together. No one turns down tacos; I believe cheese is a food group, and the Hubs always has a coupon for free espinaca. Win-win.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK Afterword Tavern & Shelves in the Crossroads is without a doubt my favorite place to drink (and write). It has booze and books! It’s quiet and cozy, and did I mention the books and booze part yet? Reading and drinking? Yes, please!

FAVORITE SHOPPING I only have two kinds of gifts I give: books and snarky (yet usable) items. So, Green Door Bookstore & Gift Shoppe in Overland Park is the perfect place for me to shop. Where else can I pick up the latest bestseller, a pair of “sweary” socks, and a sarcastic tea towel?

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM The Hubs and I lived in New York City and we witnessed 9/11 firsthand, and it had a profound impact on us, so when I saw a sign for the 9/11 Memorial, we knew we had to show it to our kids. I really had no idea what to expect, but I was shocked to find a beautiful and moving tribute tucked behind the Blue Valley Post Office.

FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS I love taking out-of-town guests to the downtown Kansas City Public Library. Most of my friends are book nerds like me, so they’re always excited to see a beautiful library. Plus, the exterior of the parking garage is famous in the book-lover world, so it’s the perfect spot for a selfie.

TOM CORBIN

T

om Corbin is a self-taught sculptor, painter, and furniture designer who embraces a “planned accident” philosophy when creating his works of art. In fact, one might say Corbin’s entire career as an artist has been a planned accident. Born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1954, his first exposure to art came from his mother, who was an art teacher. Despite his enjoyment and covert passion for art, Corbin obeyed his father’s requests and obtained a more practical college degree while attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. MU’s business school had an impeccable reputation, and Corbin earned a BS in marketing. After graduation, Corbin spent the next 10 years enduring practical jobs, all the while “determining exactly what I didn’t want to do,” he says. Then in 1982, a serendipitous conversation with a coworker led Corbin to attend a sculpting class. These classes resparked his then subdued creative passions. This can especially be said of bronze casting.

“I began casting my own work,“ says Corbin. Soon thereafter, friends began to comment on not only how much they liked his work, but also asked if he would consider selling it to them. “It finally occurred to me that there were very few sculptors in the Midwest, and this was a job I had a passion for. So I pulled the trigger,” says Corbin. Leaving his secure job in advertising, Corbin took a leap of faith, and it wasn’t long before he was consistently securing sculpture commissions. “In addition, I started designing Giacometti-inspired bronze furniture that would result in national exposure through designer showroom representation,” says Corbin. “I used to be really intimidated by the fact that I had not attended a traditional art school. I thought, everybody has to be better than me.” As the years progressed, however, his faith in himself not only grew, but Corbin began to feel comfortable “always going beyond what people sug-

gested or expected,” he says. To illustrate that point, Corbin shared the story of his experience submitting a sculpture of a panther for a competition for the Carolina Panthers NFL team. He says there were multiple layers of highly detailed rules and regulations for this contest. Corbin had followed these rules precisely and submitted his work. Much to his chagrin, however, the artist who won the competition had broken every rule, ignoring the parameters of the contest and, albeit thinking outside the box, created the sculpture he wanted to create. Lesson learned. “My work over the last three decades has experienced quite an evolution— that from a representational artist to an instinctive artist,” he explains. “Where my early sculptures were modeled in a traditional manner, my current work is more abstract and serves as a metaphor for the human condition.” Julia Velasquez, vice president and director of marketing for Corbin Bronze, continued on page 26

HOME / STYLE CONT. says, “Tom has always embraced ‘the figure’ as his subject of choice; in particular, the female figure. His new figurative works have evolved to include the female in an environment (The Environments series), giving her a persona and a purpose. Women have always felt a connection to Tom’s sculpted females. Whether that be to themselves or a friend or daughter, the result is one of emotional connection.” Halfway through his career, Corbin added painting to his list of talents. “In 2008, I began participating in a weekly painting session where one paints a life model in an hour. Confined by time, technique was suspended and thus liberated,” he says.

“Over time, this gallery showed an obvious evolution of style and became an ongoing invaluable reference source for paintings executed in the studio.” Corbin spent his first 23 years as a sculptor in the River Market. Then in 2009, he moved his studio to a historic firehouse in Rosedale, Kansas. While a brass fire pole still remains in this 1912 building, the firehouse is now a gallery, fully equipped with offices and an artist’s studio. Corbin’s work has appeared nationally in over 20 museums as well as individual collectors such as Nicole Kidman, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, and Tom Hanks. He also has had public installation sites, includ-

ing the United Nations, Florida State University, The University of Oregon, and the Kauffman Foundation. Also in KC, Corbin created the sculpture for the Children’s Fountain in North Kansas City. He additionally has his work displayed at the Firefighters Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri; Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Overland Park, Kansas; and City Hall in Kansas City, Kansas, just to name a few. Corbin was most recently awarded the commission to produce a bronze monument of President Harry S. Truman for Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. He has also just published his second coffee table art book, Tom Corbin Continued.

BEAUTY

TREAT DRY WINTER SKIN AU NATUREL

WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER

As 2020 draws to a close, things look different. Sweatsuits instead of pantsuits. Zoomchic instead of made up. But one thing seems to be hanging around—dry winter skin. We spoke with Clove Skin Studio’s Kate Fisher for the only holistic haul you need to start 2021 soft, supple, and smoother than a brand new beauty blender. Clove Skin Studio is a Brookside-based holistic skincare studio that opened in September. Fisher says that in her life she tries to do things more naturally as far as food and cleansing products, and the process of opening the studio took a lot of sampling, looking at the ingredient list, and sourcing. Some products claim to be natural, but they may not get their ingredients from natural sources.

First Things First—Start Out Fresh Facials and dermaplaning are popular, and for good reason. “Dermaplaning is a gentle superficial exfoliation of the skin,” Fisher explains. It’s great for treating dry skin. It helps remove the dry skin in addition to whatever you put on afterward—whether it be a mask, an oil, or a moisturizer. Partner the facial with a dermaplaning session and you’ll be ready and refreshed in no time!

Here’s the “How-To” Your holistic guide to saying goodbye to dry winter skin: Oil cleansing: Instead of using traditional foaming soaps to wash your

face, use oil to cleanse. You’ll want to use a high quality oil. Work the oil into your skin—you can apply it to wet or dry skin. As you massage it in, it’s really good at removing makeup and breaking up dirt and oil. And then you just wipe it off with a damp cloth. “The type of oil depends—usually there’s a ‘carrier’ oil, like jojoba, which is my favorite,” Fisher explains. Oftentimes, there are essential oils added as well. It might be jojoba, coconut, or olive oil as the base, but you don’t want to use canola. Moisturizing creams: A heavier moisturizing cream than you use in the summer is good for the winter, as well as adding in a facial oil or serum. You can also use a hyaluronic acid serum. A good restorative facial oil may even have vitamins A, C, and E in it. Honey, your skin will love this: “One of the things I love for winter is honey on the skin. It’s definitely a favorite in my beauty routine all year long, but especially in the winter!” says Fisher. You can apply it by itself or you can mix essential oils with it. It gently cleanses and it’s antibacterial.

“I specifically like raw honey because it still has the naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. It’s also a natural humectant, so it helps the skin absorb and retain moisture,” says Fisher. You can leave it on for five minutes to over an hour, but you don’t want to sleep with it on because it’s sticky. It rinses off well with warm water—and it’s cheap, so you don’t need to use very much. Up your water intake—in more ways than one: One thing that can be good in the winter is putting a humidifier by your bed at night. It’s very good to breathe in the moist air and have it in the room while you’re sleeping. You can also add essential oils to it that are good for dry skin. A few of Fisher’s favorites are sandalwood, geranium, and jasmine. “Above all, drink plenty of water. I find it’s harder for people in the winter because they’re not as thirsty (it’s not as hot),” says Fisher. If you need to drink warm water with lemon or something that might sound more appealing, then you can get your water intake that way as well.

PARENTING

WHAT’S YOUR PARENTING STYLE? AND IS IT TEACHING THE LESSONS YOU WANT TO IMPART? WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER

P

arents have always relied on a community for support when raising kids. This year’s pandemic has made that support largely unavailable. We asked local parenting pro and licensed clinical professional counselor Grace A. Stout for some tips to help parents during this unparalleled time. Stout works at Resonate Relationship Clinic in Overland Park and holds a master’s degree from K.U., with extensive post-graduate training in marriage and family therapy. She is a former licensed school counselor in the Blue Valley School District, holds a Play Therapy Certification, and has been clinically licensed for over 20 years. One program Stout has seen particularly good results with when helping parents in the KC area is called Love and Logic (loveandlogic.com), founded by a child psychiatrist and school administrator. The focus is on putting fun back into parenting while raising

psychologically healthy children. Before looking at solutions for raising happy, healthy, responsible kids, it can help to identify which type of parenting style you most identify with. “How we show love can get us into trouble,” Stout says. “This program breaks parenting into categories. We can see ourselves in each category from time to time, but with personal observation, we can more accurately choose how to respond.”

Helicopters, Drill Sergeants, and Consultants When it comes to determining your parenting style, it can be helpful to look at specific situations. For example, imagine your 10-year-old got a new bike. You bought a lock to keep it safe and went over what your child’s responsibilities were for using that lock. The bike is stolen because they forgot to lock it. How will you respond? The Drill Sergeant parent will elevate their voice, remind the child that they

were told their bike would be stolen if they didn’t lock it, and “drill” the lesson into them.

pushover—that you are “all talk and no action”—and that they don’t have to become more responsible.

The Problem: The child will focus on your anger and be upset with you for what happened. They will not feel the sting of their lack of responsibility. If they do temporarily become more responsible, it will be out of fear of your anger, which won’t work long-term. You may go out and buy another bike, grumbling to your child during the whole process, drilling the reminder to lock the bike!

The Consultant parent will empathize with the child’s being upset that the bike was stolen. After all, we all drop the ball from time to time. They will not remind the child that it was their responsibility to lock the bike. Our kids are smart—they already feel bad, which is a natural consequence of their decision making. They will likely focus on taking responsibility for what happened, versus focusing on you and your anger. If not, keep empathizing with their feelings and remove yourself from the situation.

The Helicopter Parent will respond with sympathy, remind the child what they did wrong, continually repeat the lack of good decisionmaking, and go out and buy a new bike for the child. The Problem: The child will focus on your continuous reminders and feel resentment toward you. They will also learn nothing about natural, logical consequences and you will be reinforcing the notion that you are a

parent” and a “responsible parent” is that the former will go out and buy a new bike because they, the parent, can’t stand the pain the child is suffering. The “responsible parent” will empathize and take their own pain into the back room knowing they’ve just taught a hard lesson. It’s more important to teach natural and logical consequences early, when the consequences of the child’s choices are not life-altering. “Let me assure you that all children have temper tantrums, struggle with their emotions, try to divide you and your spouse in decision making, manipulate, and lie,” Stout says. “How you handle these behaviors either increases or decreases them. Make a plan so that when you are confronted with these situations, you’ll know what to do.” For more—including audio, books, and other resources, visit loveandlogic. com, which also currently features a schooling-at-home webinar.

KACIE SLEEPLESS IN KC

I’ve been married for 20 years. My husband is a good dad and a good husband. But his snoring has become increasingly worse these past few years. He keeps me awake most nights. I have tried earplugs, melatonin, sleep sounds, and fans, but nothing drowns out his noise. He feels bad that he keeps me awake. We don’t have anywhere else in the house for me to sleep. We have four kids and my mom lives with us. Help!

Who had the bright idea that falling in love equals sharing a bedroom (and a bed too)? Married couples sleeping in different bedrooms is not unheard of. But that sounds like it’s not an option for you. A clothespin on the nose? No, that’d make him a mouth breather. Bad idea. Okay, let’s break this down. You’re off to a good start by letting your husband know your sleep is disrupted due to his snoring. There are many possible reasons your husband’s snoring is getting worse. Our tongues and muscles in the throat naturally relax when we sleep. Snoring happens when this relaxation becomes too much and tissues start to flap. Muscle tone diminishes with age. It sounds like you are trying all the tricks. You can also try buying a device that keeps your husband sleeping on his side (snoring tends to happen when you’re on your back). There are mouth exercises he can do (it’s true, look it up). Is he overweight? He may just need a lifestyle change. There are also triggers such as alcohol that can make snoring worse. If these changes don’t work—as I always say—speak to a doctor for help. Or tell one of your kids to scoot over.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

THE RED EARRINGS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

There’s a mom in Kansas City who will wake up Christmas morning to red Kendra Scott earrings from her son. Because red is her favorite color. Some say Christmas has become too commercialized. And maybe it has. Christmas seems to be more about the gift-giving, leaving the deeper meaning of Christmas lost. Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ, but it’s also a time to serve love and happiness to others, whether or not that be in the form of a gift. As I was doing my own Christmas shopping for my daughters at Kendra Scott, I overheard a boy, about 10 years old, talking to the cashier next to me. I assumed the woman he was with was his mom. I quickly realized she must have been an aunt or one of his mom’s friends, though, when the boy caught the attention of everyone within earshot. “Hello. I would like to buy these red earrings for my mom for Christmas. It is my birthday month so I would

like the birthday discount, please. I brought my birth certificate since I can’t drive.” The woman he was with handed him his birth certificate. Everyone stared and smiled. “See? It’s my birthday month. I get the discount. My mom loves this store and she’s always talking about the birthday month discount. Do you still give birthday month discounts?” The cashier said that yes, they do give a birthday month discount and he was born in a lucky month. “Oh that’s good. My mom’s favorite color is red. I saved all my money.” The woman with him smiled. The boy pulled out cash from his coat pocket. The cashier rang up the earrings, with the discount, and asked if she could wrap the earrings for him. “No, I can do that myself. And thank you for the discount.” He paid and left

with the Kendra Scott bag in his hand. The shoppers who witnessed the exchange stared as the door shut behind the boy with the December birthday. He purchased red earrings for his mom, but it wasn’t about the earrings. Everyone felt the boy’s love for his mom—a love he displayed in his own observant way. Christmas morning won’t be about his own gifts. Christmas morning will be about his excitement to make his mom happy. I wish his mom could read about the day her son stopped the Kendra Scott shoppers. And how every shopper smiled at her sweet boy. She probably already knows how sweet he is, though. She doesn’t need anyone to tell her that. Merry Christmas to the boy’s mom. Your earrings are beautiful.

AROUND TOWN

HOLIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS THE EVERGY PLAZA LIGHTS

WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS COURTESY COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA

The year was 1930. Herbert Hoover was the President of the United States; the U.S. was in the throes of the Great Depression; sliced bread went on sale for the first time; and a quaint, outdoor shopping district in Kansas City, Missouri, turned on a set of holiday lights in what would become a classic Kansas City tradition—the Country Club Plaza Lighting Ceremony. The Plaza Lighting Ceremony, now named the Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony, has been bringing joy to Kansas City families by kicking off the holiday season for the past 91 years.

The History The Country Club Plaza’s land began as a hog farm and brickyard with stagnated water, if you can imagine. The Plaza’s buildings were modeled after Seville, Spain. The Spanish architecture includes courtyards, red tile roofs, and elaborate towers. Art, sculptures, tile murals and, of course, fountains covered the Plaza’s streets and sidewalks.

Very few shopping centers built over 90 year ago still remain. Not only does the Plaza still remain, but according to Visit KC the Plaza’s forward-thinking design made an impact on retail districts in cities such as Dallas, Houston, and Cleveland.

Building held a photography studio, millinery shop, beauty shop, and baby shop. Some of these first stores were actually owned by women. Now the Suydam Building is referred to as the Mill Creek Building, housing Rye, P.F. Chang’s, Massage Envy, and Chuy’s.

What made the Plaza different from other retail districts in the country was the respect for the innovative “cars” arriving from out-of-town. The minds behind the Plaza believed people would actually drive a car to visit—it was an unusual thought at the time. Thus, the Plaza was constructed large enough to accommodate these cars. And the many fuel stations put in the Plaza preserved the Plaza during the Great Depression.

The Plaza Lights consists of 15 illuminated blocks of thousands of lights, all lit in a celebratory lighting ceremony by one switch. Yes, one switch controls every strand of light. The lucky person to flip the switch is usually a beloved local celebrity—the actors from Big Slick or players from the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs, or SportingKC. The late Kate Spade held the honor as well as Saturday Night Live comedian Heidi Gardner.

The Lighting Ceremony

2020 is a little different. The ceremony was broadcast on live television rather than opening up the streets to the crowds. Kasey Vena, general manager of the Country Club Plaza, explains how the Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony brings the city hope in a year none of us will forget.

Even though the first lighting ceremony started in 1930, the first holiday lights consisted of a single strand of lights in front of the entrance of the Suydam Building at 47th Street and Mill Creek Parkway. The Suydam

“We actually had requests to keep the lights on in March of 2020—to keep them up all year—but the lights were already down by March,” Vena says. “This holiday season was a good experience to be able to celebrate a year of hope in the community.”

sold as ornaments at Hallmark, Charlie Hustle, and Made in KC.

If you do see a burnt out bulb, you will not see it for long. The crews never stop working for the six months the lights are up. But burnt out bulbs do happen. And when they do, three to four thousand bulbs get “retired” every year. They are

The lights will be turned off on Jan. 10, 2021 and taken down by March 2021. But when the next holiday season arrives, the Country Club Plaza will keep the classic Kansas City tradition going—92 years later.

The Evergy Plaza Lights started installation in August 2020. It takes three months to outline every window and tower in its own intricate way. Each year, every building displays the same lights in the same colors. It never changes. Once the lights are up, the crews start testing and replacing bulbs throughout the season. If you’re lucky you will see tests during the day at each building. And if you’re very lucky, you will see the whole Plaza light up at 2 a.m. a few days before Thanksgiving. When the lights are not in use, they are placed in a secret storage space. “They’re stored the same way every year. It’s very organized and very cool to see

APP OF THE MONTH

AMAZON PHOTOS

RETURNING TO THE DAYS OF PHYSICAL MEMORIES

The gist: 600. That’s the average number of pictures people keep on their phone at any given time. My number is 200, but a month ago, it was closer to 450. And I have Amazon Photos to thank for my more organized, faster-performing phone.

The free app allows you to checkmark which photos to permanently store off-phone, then gives you the option to order prints. You can select from matte or glossy, various standard sizes (4x6, 5x7, etc.), and even personalized photo gifts, like calendars and greeting cards. The Photos app links up with your Prime account, making ordering quick and easy. I’ve ordered four batches of pictures so far, and each time they’ve arrived within a few days of ordering. The print quality isn’t perfect, but at 12 cents a pic, I won’t complain. (Or maybe it’s my iPhone 5 that’s the problem, but I’m keeping it!) Now I’m making photo albums with the prints for more permanent “memory storage” and for sharing with family and friends.
