PUBLISHER’S NOTE

FALL, FOOTBALL & FESTIVALS From the crimson reds and golden yellows worn by Kansas City Chiefs fans to the rusty oranges, pale greens and rich browns of the turning leaves to the pink ribbons in support of breast cancer awareness—October always brings a blaze of color to our great city. I love everything about this time of year. The cooler temperatures and open windows all day long. The smell and crunch of freshly fallen leaves. The sense of camaraderie I feel at a football watch party or game. The numerous festivals that take place across Kansas City and the surrounding areas. The crisp, cool nights just warm enough to enjoy outside. The return of the pumpkin spice latte. And the sense of inner peace as I marvel at the beauty of nature. In this issue, we celebrate our city’s great offerings and amazing people. We’ve profiled chief meteorologist at KMBC Channel 9 Bryan Busby (pg. 24), pastry chef J.C. Gregg (pg. 30) and parenting expert, author and founder of Back in the Swing Barbara C. Unell (pg. 10). We’ve highlighted the American Cancer Society Kansas City’s Making Strides 5k Walk (pg. 14), gathered all the best accessories for cheering on the Chiefs in style (pg. 7), compiled a list of our top seven places to get a relaxing facial (pg. 48), and modeled the season’s best outfits (pg. 32). Have a great October, Kansas City. And, as always, thanks for letting us share our great community with you every month.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

MAKING STRIDES BREAST CANCER 5K WALK BRINGING TOGETHER THOSE IMPACTED BY BREAST CANCER WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY GARREK REED

Shelly Herrman is one of five Portrait of Hope Survivors planning to attend the American Cancer Society Kansas City’s Making Strides 5k Walk. She will join over 10,000 women, men, and children in the Kansas City area honoring anyone impacted by breast cancer.

But Herrman’s breast cancer story begins in an unusual way. It begins with a car accident. As Herrman has learned through this process, though, no one’s journey is the same. Herrman spent five years getting yearly mammograms on an area of breast tissue damaged by the seatbelt in the car accident. In October 2017, a spot showed up in the mammogram that concerned doctors. Shortly after, she received a call from her doctor informing her she had breast cancer. There is never a good time to get that call from your doctor, but for Herrman it’s a bittersweet memory. Herrman’s daughter attended Fort Osage High School at the time. Her daughter, Allee, was on the student council and led the “Fort Fights Cancer” campaign. Herrman spent a lot of time researching and fundraising for cancer research. The football players wore pink and the student body wore special T-shirts for the charity game. Herrman received the call about her cancer the night before the “Fort Fights Cancer” football game where Allee was cheerleading. “When I told her the news before the game, Allee looked at me and said, ‘Mom, I get to honor you tonight.’ Every time I tell this part of my story, it gets me,” says Herrman. The next 30 days were a whirlwind. Doctors diagnosed Herrman with Stage 1, HER2 Positive breast cancer. Herrman’s type of breast cancer is a hormone-driven cancer. Ten years ago, Herrman’s cancer would have been fatal. With the help of American Cancer Society’s research on HER2 cancer, though, the use of a drug called Herceptin combined with chemotherapy makes the HER2 cancer treatable in most cases.

Making Strides for Breast Cancer brings people together to celebrate survivors, have fun, and raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society's efforts to save lives from breast cancer.

OCTOBER 2019

Doctors scheduled a lumpectomy to remove the tumor, and in December 2017 Herrman began chemotherapy and herceptin treatments for the next 12 weeks. “I lost 40 pounds. I lost my hair. I used to be busty and I lost that with the surgery. I felt like I was losing my identity,” Herrman recalls. When her hair began falling out, she had her husband shave her head. Her older daughter watched her hair being shaved while her younger daughter sat in another room and watched YouTube videos. Herrman remembers, “I went to talk to my younger daughter to make sure she was okay with me losing my hair. Her answer was, ‘You’re just my mom with no hair.’ That’s when I realized I didn’t let cancer define me. I am the same person with the same friends. I was still me.”

The hardest part of Herrman’s journey is also the most encouraging. After 26 daily radiation treatments, the physical effects started to take a toll on her quality of life. She formed lymphedema, a swelling that can occur after lymph nodes are removed. The area was hard and painful. Her doctor recommended a breast physical therapist. It sounded strange to Herrman that someone massaging breast tissue can cure lymphedema. Her skepticism was quickly alleviated, though, when she began to feel better. “I handed out my therapist’s name to over 500 people. It changed my life and I’ll forever preach it to help women. Also, do your own research with reputable sources. No one’s journey is the same,” Herrman says. Herrman’s spirit and willingness to help others inspired The American Cancer

MAMMOGRAMS SAVE LIVES.

Society Kansas City to ask Herrman to be one of five Portrait of Hope survivors—ambassadors to the American Cancer Society. A DOSE OF RELAXATION:

INFUSED COSMETIC & IV REJUVENATION WRITTEN BY ALLISON MCLEAY / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Alex Tripp, a board-certified anesthesiologist, and Katy Tripp, a registered nurse, realized they were more than just the perfect match in love and marriage. They were perfect business partners as well. While both had a passion for healing people, they envisioned a business venture that could also satisfy society’s demand for feeling better quickly. After months of helping close friends and family, the couple established Infused Cosmetic and IV Rejuvenation in May 2018. This mobile medical spa offers botox, dermal fillers, IM injections, and IV infusion services all across Kansas City. Infused Rejuvenation treats individual clients as well as collaborates with local businesses to do pop-up events, botox parties, weddings, and more.

What Are IV Infusions? Each IV package is equipped with water-soluble vitamins and fluids that cater to your body’s current and individual needs, including migraine relief, anti-aging, and recovery from exhaustion or hangovers. “The medicines we use are all common and tolerated very well,” explains Alex. Infused Rejuvenation tailors their recommendations to your lifestyle,

but all infusions include 1 liter of electrolyte-balanced fluid and use a unique combination of water-soluble vitamins and other necessary fluids. Infused Rejuvenation offers five different IV infusion packages to rehydrate, replenish, and revive your body for various circumstances. This market of IV infusions, hydration therapy, and revive methods has become popular as the ultimate and

healthy way to recover quickly. “We’re not treating people for diseases,” explains Katy. “It’s things like hangovers, anti-aging, colds, and flus. It doesn’t bloat you, and all the vitamins and minerals go directly into your bloodstream. Plus, the results are usually felt within 30 minutes.” Alex says that education and getting the word out has been a challenge. “A lot of people don’t know services like this even exist,” he explains. “The difficulty is getting people used to the idea that they can have somebody come over and fix their hangover or flu in a half hour.” Revive—which is a package consisting of anti-inflammatory medication, multiple anti-nausea medications, and immune-boosting Vitamin C—is an especially popular product on Saturday and Sunday mornings, or in some cases for an entire wedding party. “One of our best events was the day after a recent

wedding when one of the groomsmen bought eight IVs for the wedding party as a gift,” says Katy.

"I haven’t had an illness since January 2018, and I have a 5- and 6-year-old who share their germs with me on a regular basis." Lauren Walsh is a client of Infused Rejuvenation, and she says she has felt the miracles of what the infusions can do. “The IV helps you recapture what would have been a lost day,” says Walsh. “Why not have your hangover gone in an hour or two?”

During flu season, the Vitamin C injection is in high demand. For clients like Mary Butler, though, it’s a monthly necessity. “I haven’t had an illness—not even a cold—since January 2018, and I have a 5- and 6-year-old who share their germs with me on a regular basis,” says Butler.

Infused Rejuvenation Comes to You By eliminating the storefront and typical business hours, Infused Rejuvenation is able to keep their prices low and their services available to a wide range of clients across the city. The process is simple, involving a 10-minute health history assessment followed by a 20-minute IV Infusion in the comfort of your own home. Infused Rejuvenation’s client Lauren Walsh adds, “The last thing you want to do when you aren’t feeling well is leave the house, so this solves that problem for me.”

Infused Rejuvenation's signature IV infusions are tailored to each patient and treat anything from hangovers to migraines.

KACIE WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

We’re getting ready to put our house up for sale. We put a lot of work into updating the kitchen, installing new carpets, and making the landscaping pretty for fall. But we’re concerned about our neighbor’s yard. It is full of weeds and they let their kids leave their toys everywhere. Should we ask them to clean up?

Here’s a plan. Before putting your house on the market, sneak over to your neighbor’s house in the middle of the night dressed in all black. Bring as many rolls of toilet paper as you can hold and let ‘em fly! Then go to bed. The next morning stroll outside with your coffee. When you see your neighbors cleaning up, offer to help. “Here let me grab these toys for you. Do you have a good spot to keep these in the garage? Do you need us to mow your lawn? I have a good weed killer for these.” I’m mostly joking about the toilet paper. If things are truly appalling, though, ask your neighbor if they will tidy up a little bit while your house is for sale. If they don’t have the cash or time to fix it, offer to help or to pay a professional. It’s not your responsibility, but if it’s a potential deal-breaker, it may be a wise investment. Good luck!

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

BE WELL

EARLY DETECTION

FOR BREAST CANCER WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

With breast cancer, early detection and treatment can save lives. The month of October is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness to increase support for the disease and bring attention to the importance of screenings. history, and genetics,” says Bettina Lowe, M.D., medical director of the Breast Center at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “Others can be modified, such as unhealthy diet, being overweight, low activity, excessive alcohol intake, and smoking. Healthy lifestyle choices can help women keep their risk as low as possible.”

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer screenings, including annual mammograms, can help to find these cancers earlier and at a more treatable stage. “Since the 1990s, breast cancer mortality has decreased 30 percent, and much of that change is because of early detection with mammography,” says Andy Anderson, M.D., breast imaging radiologist at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “We may see an even greater decline in mortality due to the introduction of newer technologies like 3D mammography.” While it’s impossible to know who will get breast cancer and who won’t, there are some factors that can increase a person’s risk. “Some factors can’t be changed, such as being female, age, family

Women at average risk should perform self breast examinations, obtain yearly breast exams from their providers, and follow routine mammogram screening guidelines, says Dr. Lowe. The Breast Center at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission follows the American College of Radiology recommendation for annual mammograms starting at age 40 for women at average risk.

For women at higher risk, annual screenings may begin earlier than 40. Those risk factors include the following: • Having the breast cancer gene BRCA1 or BRCA2 • A history of radiation therapy to the chest (usually as treatment for lymphoma) • Biopsy-proven lobular neoplasia, ADH, DCIS, invasive breast cancer or ovarian cancer • Having a mother or sister with pre-menopausal breast cancer • Having a 20 percent or more life-

time risk for breast cancer based on family history (both maternal and paternal). To find out if you fall into that 20 percent risk category, Dr. Lowe recommends talking to your doctor. Online tools can also help predict risk by asking a series of questions about personal and family health history. “The Tyrer Cuzick and Gail models can estimate a patient’s lifetime risk for developing breast cancer,” says Dr. Lowe. “For women with a lifetime risk over 20 percent, they may start yearly mammogram screenings earlier and include a yearly breast MRI in their plan.” Depending on your family and personal health history, you and your doctor may decide that you’re a good candidate for genetic testing. You might be at risk for the gene mutation if you have two or more close relatives who developed breast cancer before age 50, male relatives with breast cancer, or relatives with both ovarian and breast cancer. The BRCA gene mutation is uncommon, but it causes a much greater risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. While it doesn’t guarantee that a patient will develop breast cancer, physicians recommend increased surveillance, including yearly mammograms and MRIs.

“While BRCA gene abnormalities only account for five to 10 percent of breast cancers, women with these mutations face a lifetime risk of up to 70 percent,” says Dr. Lowe. “These women may elect to employ the risk-reduction strategy of preventive or prophylactic mastectomies.” For all women, earlier detection means better survival rates. A 3D mammogram, also known as tomosynthesis, provides multiple images to provide a more thorough picture of breast tissue. Dr. Anderson recommends 3D mammograms to all women, especially

those with dense breast tissue. “A decade ago, screening mammograms went from film to digital, and that was a step up in technology,” he explains. “3D mammograms are another step up. We can view the breast tissue in thin slices, which gives us more information rather than just one picture. Studies show the 3D mammograms not only reduce the number of false positives, but they also help find breast cancer earlier.” In addition to regular screenings, physicians recommend you stay aware of what your breasts look and feel like and make an appointment if

you notice any changes. Breast cancer symptoms can include a lump or mass in the breast or underarm, change in the appearance or size of the breast, a newly inverted nipple, or changes in the skin such as dimpling. AROUND TOWN

IT’S GETTING SUNNY WITH BRYAN BUSBY: CHIEF METEOROLOGIST AT KMBC CHANNEL 9 WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

He’s one of Kansas City’s most beloved meteorologists. Bryan Busby may have a fascination with every weather app developed, but he’s also a man of many talents. But does Bryan Busby keep an umbrella in his car? We sat down to find out.

SIMPLYkc: Kansas City

wants to know—what is your antiaging secret? You’ve been in our homes for 34 years and you look as good as when you started.

Bryan Busby: (laughs) Wow! Well, I wear makeup on television. What’s that Oscar Wilde novel where the portrait ages but the characters stay young-looking? The Picture of Dorian Gray!

SKC:

What’s your favorite Kansas City barbecue?

BB: The Jones Bar-B-Q in KCK is great. For ribs, I prefer Q39. For brisket, I like Gates. For pulled pork, it’s Zarda. It just varies on what I want. And you can’t go wrong with Joe’s KC.

SKC: Do you have any other favorite restaurants?

BB: For breakfast, there’s a place called Succotash. I recommend the Burrito of Love. It’s a pancake with

scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese wrapped up like a burrito with butter and syrup on top. I also like La Bodega, PotPie in Westport, and there’s a little hole-in-the-wall place off 31st street called Kitty’s—if you want a greasy burger and fries, it’s phenomenal.

on weather. I was hooked. A lot of credit goes to my parents, too. I told them I wanted to be a meteorologist on television. In 1969, there were no people of color giving the weather reports. They could have told me no, but they didn’t.

SKC: Would you prefer to watch the sunrise or sunset?

stayed at the news station to cover severe weather?

BB: Easy. Sunset. I’m a night

BB: Twenty-four hours, and it’s

owl. When I’m done with the 10 o’clock newscast, I go home and I’m still wound up. I finally doze off around 12:30 or 1 am after binge watching Netflix.

usually during a winter storm. A tornado threat during the spring will clear the region in five or six hours, but snowstorms are slow moving. I’ll set up a cot here or stay at a hotel up the street. It goes back to the trust people have in you. If we need to be here, we’re here.

SKC:

When did you know you wanted to be a meteorologist?

BB: July 4, 1969 in Ohio. I was eight years old. There was a thunderstorm and I became terrified of thunder. The fear turned into a passion after my elementary school science teacher walked me to the library to check out some books

SKC: What is the longest you’ve

SKC: What’s the craziest thing you’ve reported?

BB: What just happened in Linwood, Kansas, this past May is probably the biggest tornado I’ve reported on. And to have no fatal-

ities in that EF4 tornado—that is miraculous and nothing short of divine intervention. One storm track had it hitting some recognizable landmarks like the Legends, the Crossroads, 18th and Vine, and Power and Light. For a split second, you see my eyes get big, my mouth open, and then I had to start talking again.

SKC: Have you been in a tornado? BB: I’ve seen one but never been in one. I’ve chased them. There’s a group that I’m good friends with called the Kansas City Storm Chasers. If it’s not affecting my viewing area, I’ll tag along with them. It keeps my chops up.

SKC: What’s the biggest miscon-

ception about being a meteorologist? Is there anything you wish more people knew?

BB: The thing we hear a lot is, “I wish

north of the river or south? Will my child’s softball game be rained out in Overland Park?” People’s expectations are higher.

I could have a job where I’m wrong half the time.” If you think I’m going to be wrong, listen to me carefully, and do the opposite. If we’re in August and I say it’s going to be 100 degrees, wear a parka, scarf, and mittens. If it’s December and I think it’s going to snow, wear flip flops and shorts. We’ll see how wrong I really am.

It’s like filling out a basketball bracket. No one has a perfect bracket, because things change. Your star player gets injured. A ref makes a bonehead call. You can’t predict the changing factors. We do our best, but we have to be able to adapt.

People seem to remember the big misses rather than the days where we’re close. In the old days, I could say it was going to rain and if it rained within 24 hours I was right. But now people want to know, “Okay,

an umbrella in your car?

SKC: Last question—do you carry BB: Yes, two in each car. And a poncho in one of the two. I can’t be seen caught in the rain. It’s like, “What? You didn’t believe your own forecast?”

PARENTING

HELPING YOUR CHILD THROUGH TIMES OF TRANSITION WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER

When it comes to special memories of your child, their firsts are probably at the top of the list: their first steps, their first solid foods, their first time going potty on the toilet. But these firsts also indicate transitions, which can be stressful for the whole family. Child and family therapist Jenna Redoch of Resolve Counseling & Wellness in Overland Park has helped local families navigate these changes—as well as other challenges that come with parenting—for almost nine years, first at Children’s Mercy Hospital and now with Resolve. She says over and over she has seen parents gauging their child’s progress by comparing them to friends’ children on Facebook or other social media. “If you see on Facebook that your friend’s child was potty-trained at two and your child is still in diapers at three, you might start to panic,” says Redoch. “But every child is different and progresses at their own pace. These times provide a great opportunity to develop ways to connect with

your child. The key is not to expect immediate results.” Lori Cull-Deshmukh is another licensed and certified therapist at Resolve. She specializes in play therapy and has helped local families for more than 19 years. Cull-Deshmukh encourages parents to embrace times of transition. “Transitions present children with opportunities to develop strategies to manage their emotions and behaviors,” she explains. Redoch and Cull-Deshmukh encourage you to practice the following strategies for successfully navigating early childhood changes so you can spend more time enjoying your little one and less time worrying. Be consistent and patient. Kids require time and repeated experiences to learn a new habit. How many times have we as adults tried to change one of our behaviors and at first failed? One key with young children is to exhibit the behavior you expect.

PARENTING CONT.

“Remember that children learn by example,” says Cull-Deshmukh. “Provide a visual cue or reminder—a picture of what to expect next. This can be a great tool for learning new things. Toddlers and young children need and crave consistency. Doing things the same way every day makes things predictable, and that helps children feel comfortable and safe.” Provide positive feedback. As soon as your child does something you want her or him to adopt as a habit, voice your approval. “It can be as simple as saying, ‘I love how you picked up your toy and put it back in the toy box when you were done with it,’” says Redoch. “No behavior is too small if it’s something you want to encourage.”

“Don’t punish children for accidents,” adds Cull-Deshmukh. “Reward and support them for trying.” Ask for your pediatrician’s guidelines, but trust your own instincts. Doctor-advised guidelines do change from time to time, so instead of doing your own internet searching, go to the source. Then trust your instincts. “Parents who are informed usually have a pretty good instinct about their child’s progress during changes,” says Redoch. When it comes to general changes in day-to-day life, like changing environments when going from Grandma’s house back home, give your kids a heads-up.

“Young children don’t understand the concept of time,” says Cull-Deshmukh. “Give a warning if a change is coming. Use occurrences to prep them for the transition. For example, ‘You may stack three blocks, then we are getting into the car.’” Transitional times are special moments in your child’s life, and provide opportunities for the growth of the parent-child relationship. A little consistency, patience, and positivity go a long way toward creating a good atmosphere for easy transitions later in your child’s life. Still have questions? DISH What sets your business apart? There is a savory side to what I do. Sugar is not flavor, it’s a filler, and it’s the cheapest thing bakeries can use to create bulk. I’d rather spend more money on higher end liqueurs and fresh ingredients for flavoring. I use fruit purees instead of flavorings.

How do you start a typical day? I get up at 2:30 am, sometimes 3 am if I’m feeling lazy. I get my coffee going and then do my mise en place. I get all my ingredients ready for baking. I’ll weigh out my flour, my sugar—I’ll have everything ready. I’ll put it on my sheet pans, my speed rack, and cover it. Then I go to work at my other job—I’m an auditor at Costco, and I’ve been there almost 20 years.

What was your favorite dish growing up and who cooked it?

J.C. GREGG PASTRY CHEF WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEL MCDOWELL

J.C. Gregg is a self-taught home baker who began learning from his mom when he was young. He helped her make dessert every night for their family of six. In 2012 when his partner was homebound with brain cancer, Gregg picked up baking again. He creates something new and different every day, and we’re lucky when he shares his talents and treats with the rest of us.

My mother’s Swiss steak. She would take round steak and batter it kind of like a chicken fried steak, but not as heavy. Then she would make a tomato sauce like a gravy over the top of it.

Do you have a guilty pleasure food? There are two. The one I’ve had the longest is a piece of peanut butter toast at night before bed. Now on Sundays I make brioche bread, slice it, butter it, and bake it so it’s really hard. Then I pulverize it in the food processor and make a macaron shell out of it with a peanut butter filling, so it is a peanut butter toast macaron.

What dish or cuisine would you like to master but haven’t? Ramen. A friend of mine, Shan-

non Bowman, makes the best ramen in the city. She’s so detailed. It takes two days just to make one component of the four or five.

Do you have a go-to cocktail? A reverse Manhattan. I do two parts vermouth and one part bourbon.

What’s the best meal you’ve had recently? I had dinner at Farina: the tagliatelle pasta and slow-roasted boar. Michael Smith is so talented; I love his food. It speaks to you. That’s what I try to do with my pastries. I don’t want people to taste them, I want them to feel the emotions I’m feeling when I make them.

Do you have any culinary tips for the home cook? Mise en place. Measure and weigh everything before you start. Read a recipe twice before you start baking or cooking, and stay organized. Also, clean as you go. If you have the daunting task of cleaning 18 bowls, 12 spoons, and six piping bags when you’re finished, you won’t want to do it again.

DECORATING FOR THE HOLIDAYS START WITH A MOOD BOARD WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

year for showcasing and sharing our decorating styles. But many of us struggle with the pressure to decorate. To get the most cohesive, well-thought-out plan without spending a fortune on items we’ll never use again, a good suggestion is to start by creating a holiday mood board. This will help you stay focused when shopping. A mood board helps reflect the look, feel, design, and intent of your project. In its simplest definition, it’s a collage of items. It can be either 2D or 3D, whichever captures the essence of your project. If you want to go old school when creating your mood board, grab a piece of posterboard and cut and paste from printouts or magazines. You can also include 3D items like fabric samples and ornaments. Or you can create one using a simple computer program like PowerPoint and copy/paste your selections. If you have a 3D item, take a

HYGGE HOLID

picture from your phone’s camera and email it to yourself. This is handy for shopping, as you can email the document to your phone and pull it up when in the store. “One way to get started on your mood board is to decide on your aesthetic style and combine that with a holiday trend statement,” suggests Will Brown of Will Brown Interiors. “Your holidays could be inspired by the timeless reds and greens we’ve grown up with, or maybe you bring in a popular trend such as a celestial theme, which is popular for home décor as well as weddings. Starting with the style and theme will help guide you in the selection of ideas for your board.” To help readers in this year’s selection of a theme, Brown shares some of his favorite holiday themes that are inspiring him this season.

CLASSIC TIDINGS: This is a rich, traditional aesthetic that hearkens to the most popular red and green theme.

DAYS / RUSTIC CASUAL

A CHRISTMAS CORAL / SOFT MODERN

But by integrating modern black and white into the mix, you add a freshness and a crisp edge. For example, think of the classic shapes and familiar silhouettes often carried by heritage brands like Pendleton and Ralph Lauren, two classic examples that fit this look.

BRIGHT FESTIVAL: This is a more casual, family-friendly aesthetic. It also invites crafting, which is perfect for making memories with family and friends. This look can go boho chic if you’re an eclectic collector with various styles in your home. The colors can easily be underplayed as needed. Think Anthropologie and the creative windows they create every year that excite viewers’ senses.

HYGGE HOLIDAYS: “For this rustic casual theme, I channeled a more European interpretation that taps into the popular hygge (pronounced HUE-guh) movement that’s captured the hearts of

CELESTIAL AWAKENING / TAILORED CLASSIC

Americans,” says Brown. Hygge is a Danish word meaning acknowledging a special feeling or moment of togetherness. There’s a simple and unadorned appeal to what is essentially a lifestyle rather than a trend. Getting cozy and comfortable with friends and family is the hygge way of getting through the long nights of winter.

works well for non-traditional holiday celebrations and can parlay perfectly into a New Year’s Eve celebration. Take advantage of this regal style that pairs royally with the glitz and glam of metallic gold, silver, and rose gold.

A CHRISTMAS CORAL: A play on

Will Brown, an experienced designer, has worked for two Fortune 500 companies—Hallmark and Target Corp—and knows how to inspire holiday magic. When researching a new holiday collection, Brown learns from consumer trends, cultural influences, and design trade shows. Brown uses Pinterest as a tool to collect imagery, but also as a way of connecting the dots to see what will be trending next. Take heed of his expert advice, break out that blank canvas, and start compiling your holiday mood board!

Charles Dickens’ tale of the holiday season, this soft modern aesthetic leans into the popularity of Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year: living coral. “I’ve paired it with a mint green to lend softness to the saturated red and green hues,” says Brown. “But coral can easily pair up with many hues.” Relish the warmth of living coral this holiday season before Pantone declares the next “it” color.

CELESTIAL AWAKENING: This tailored classic aesthetic works elegantly against a starry theme. It’s a versatile look that

lot of you don’t get Twitter. Twitter is jokes. I mean, it can be jokes if you follow the right people. Sometimes it is political. It can be newsworthy, too. You know what, forget I said anything. I’m not here to get you to sign up for Twitter. I just want you to read my story about when I tweeted my way through crashing a wedding. I didn’t know the bride or the groom. I didn’t know the families of the bride or groom. I didn’t receive a formal invitation. I didn’t even bring a gift. I drank their champagne while toasting a couple I’ve never met. I ate their food and downed their cake. I downed their cake again the next morning (because you can’t leave a wedding without extra cake). I brought my uninvited daughter too. Sound like wedding crashing? In reality, I was babysitting the ring bearer while his mom performed bridesmaid duties. It was a last-minute favor for a friend because her plus one got sick. At one point in the reception hall, the

only people I knew were the threeyear-old ring bearer and my threeyear-old daughter.

Oh no. My table just asked how I know the bride/groom. “I’m with the ring bearer.” #WeddingCrashing

Here’s how my experience went.

TEARS. The bride’s dad made me cry. He’s good. He’s good. #WeddingCrashing

Walking into the church. Someone I don’t know asked how I’ve been lately. How nice! “Good. And you?” #WeddingCrashing

Nice dinner. Very nice. Let’s cut that cake bride/groom I don’t know. #WeddingCrashing

Smiled and pointed at the photographer. I better make the album. #WeddingCrashing

My daughter is only one dancing at the reception because it’s early in the night. Emma is a natural at #WeddingCrashing

Bride is walking down the aisle. Emma: Mommy, who’s wedding is this? Me: No clue. #WeddingCrashing

Bride/groom and best man are doing a Billie Jean montage. This is great. Gonna be on YouTube. Look for me #WeddingCrashing

Peace be with you. Oh, hey. Nice to meet you. #WeddingCrashing Best part of the reception - open bar! Whose hand do I have to shake around here? Who’s paying my tab. #WeddingCrashing Too bad I’m driving my kid and myself home. Sprite for me. Free Sprite. #WeddingCrashing

Just walked faster out the door when bride did a double take at the four plates of cake I was taking home. #WeddingCrashing To the lovely couple – thanks for letting me crash your wedding. Tell your photographer to send me copies of myself #WeddingCrashing

GOOD TASTES

COLORFUL TASTES FOR FALL RECIPE BY DAISY RODRIGUEZ GAVALA PHOTO BY MEL MCDOWELL

Pumpkin Bisque SERVES 6

Ingredients 3 tablespoons butter 2 medium leeks, chopped 2 cups pumpkin, chopped into 1-inch pieces 2 medium sweet potatoes, chopped 3 medium carrots, chopped 2-1/2 cups vegetable stock 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup half and half cream Salt and pepper, to taste Roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds, for garnish (optional)

Directions

Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and saute for 2-3 minutes until soft and translucent. Add pumpkin, sweet potato, and carrot, and cook for another five minutes, stirring occasionally. Add vegetable stock. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes or until all vegetables are soft. Remove the soup from heat. Using an immersion blender or food processor, pulse until smooth. Add cream and season to taste with salt and pepper. Add pinches of nutmeg and cinnamon until the desired level of sweetness and a satisfying aroma is reached. Transfer to six serving bowls, decorate with a swirl of cream, seeds, and more nutmeg, if desired. For comfort in October, there is nothing better than a creamy bowl of soup. This recipe is an easy and delicious dinner alternative, especially now that pumpkin and winter squashes are in season. For variety, substitute pumpkin with acorn squash, cabocha or butternut squashes. The result is a more vibrant yellow hue and different levels of sweetness. Serve with a simple charcuterie dish and cheeses with a crunchy baguette.

WILL BROWN:

ARTIST TO DESIGNER WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTO BY CATHRYN FARLEY

Hiring an interior designer might seem stressful or intimidating if you’ve never gone through the process. Choosing someone who is truly passionate about design and aligns with your project vision is key. This is where Will Brown enters. It is his goal to take the stress out of your design journey and help develop your unique vision. He believes a home should create the backdrop for life’s important moments to take center stage. Brown has always been a creative individual at heart, and he comes with a vast artistic background of illustration, photography, graphic design, and product design. The combination of his natural artistic talent and childhood experiences led him to become an interior designer. “My mom was always making our home feel both beautiful and cozy. My dad was in the military so we traveled during my childhood years. One of the things my mom was so good at was creating a warm and familiar home no matter where we lived,” says Brown. Brown didn’t consider working interior design until he began helping friends while working at Target and Hallmark. They knew he was creatively talented, so they reached out to him to help with spaces in their homes. “One project led to another, and before I knew it, I had a portfolio of these projects,” says Brown. He began posting his work online, which led to a growing side business. Part of Brown’s strength as a designer has been storytelling. It is important for him to figure out his client’s story and what they want to convey. “I relish listening and creating a storyline with the project, and I use space as a way to tell stories. A project can be as practical as updating a bathroom or refreshing a bedroom, but I try to go deeper,” he

explains. This helps determine the color palette and material along with inspiring imagery that allows him to cater to the client. “Storytelling really is how I’m able to get clients to understand and buy into the vision.”

I relish listening and creating a story with the project, and I use space as a way to tell stories. As important as it is to Brown to focus on the client’s story, he also likes to bring his perspective to each project. His interest in traveling and experiencing different cultures offers a unique point of view. He has traveled to locations where furniture and decorative accessories are created, such as factories in Asia and Europe, as well as storefronts and workshops of local makers. “It shouldn’t just become another piece you’ve added to someone’s home, instead each piece has a story behind it,” explains Brown. A lot of his clients are well-traveled and have interesting stories themselves.

Because of this, Brown has found them to be more open to diverse ideas and taking a level of risk with their spaces. “I think of interior design as a journey and a collaboration,” Brown explains. “If they give me a list of ‘I don’ts’ or ‘what not to dos,’ it could be a barrier to fulfilling a brilliant project, and it’s sometimes a lot of work to get them beyond that.” Brown worked for two large creative-based companies prior to creating his own business, and these positions led to project management experience. His roles gave him leadership, problem solving, and people skills that he puts to use in his new title of owner. “I come armed with a lot of things that make it easier to work with someone who is a seasoned creative professional,” Brown says. He also enjoys collaborating with local artists and businesses. “I look for opportunities where I can cross-promote or collaborate with businesses. I have come to embrace Kansas City and its entrepreneurial spirit,” says Brown. “And I feel it’s important to build a thriving community that supports the drive and provides opportunities to the small business owner.” If you’re willing to open up your home and mind to Brown, it will be a collaboration of a lifetime.
