PUBLISHER’S NOTE

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS GOALS I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions—I prefer New Year’s goals. That is why for 2020 I have a range of goals from big to small. I feel a sense of accomplishment every time I cross a goal off my list when it is achieved. Having a list of goals gives me something to work towards throughout the year. I write these goals down in a notebook and glance at the list each week. This reminds me of what I want to achieve and gives me the nudge I need to stay motivated and work to accomplish the goals. Staying healthy is one goal I set for myself, and fortunately for me we have a list of 7 Things to Do Daily to Keep Your Health on Track on page 26. I’m inspired to commit to one small exercise a day, and then build on it. I also began meal prepping for each week. Rather than rushing home from a busy day at work and grabbing takeout while driving my daughter to volleyball practice, my family can have a healthy meal ready to go. We at SIMPLYkc Magazine are wishing you all a wonderful new year. Here’s to starting fresh!

AROUND TOWN

IT’S (STILL) A WINTER WONDERLAND IN KANSAS CITY WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

You did it! The holidays are over. But don’t get the flip flops out yet—old man winter will be around for a few more months. Kansas Citians know many ways to keep the winter blues away, but we found a few out-of-the-ordinary sparkles in Kansas City’s snow piles.

If you like to bust out of KC to go skiing … Snow Creek Weston, Missouri Skisnowcreek.com Snow Creek is the Colorado Rockies’ little brother. Littlest brother. Snow Creek is the baby of the family, sitting at 1,100 feet altitude with a 300-foot vertical drop. Kansas City is not a mountainous region, but Snow Creek in Weston, Missouri, is the perfect spot for beginners to visit before heading to the Colorado Rockies.

JANUARY 2020

Snow Creek owns over 60 snowmaking machines. If the weather doesn’t provide enough snow, the snow machines can produce 12 inches of snow in a 24-hour period. Visitors can rent skis or try snowboarding. Snow Creek offers skiing and snowboarding classes for kids and beginners. The base lodge even has a bar lounge and cafeteria for visitors to enjoy between runs. The only thing you need to bring is your warm snow gear—and don’t forget the sunglasses and sunscreen. After all, you are 1,100 feet closer to the sun.

If you love the Boulevard Brewery tour … KC Wine Co. Vineyard and Winery 13875 S. Gardner Rd., Olathe, KS Cozy up with a glass of red wine and attend KC Wine Co.’s January events. Join them for a weekend “wine down” and coloring pages Jan. 3-5. KC Wine Co. has a large indoor tasting room perfect for a weekend of … coloring! Coloring pages and utensils will be provided. Experts will be on hand to help you pick out your fabulous

assortment of wine, snacks, and their famous wine slushies. If coloring isn’t your thing, stop by Jan. 10-12 for wine tastings, chocolate, graham crackers, and the ‘mallow. Nothing will warm you up more than s’mores. Of course, the wine helps too.

If you love the Kansas City Zoo … Cedar Cove Feline Conservatory Education Center Louisburg, KS Saveoursiberians.org If you’re in Louisburg, Kansas, you might hear the roar of a lion. No, your ears aren’t tricking you. Approximately four miles east of Louisburg lies the home of the “big cats”—lions, tigers, a leopard, and more. Cedar Cove's founder established the center as a large cat sanctuary 18 years ago. The center rescued or

took in most of the animals from private owners. The animals have never lived in the wild. While the big cats draw visitors every year, the center’s mission is to raise awareness about how humans impact the natural ecosystem. Cedar Cove is dedicated to the care and preservation of endangered large cats, but also educating the public on the animals’ behavior, physiology, habitats, and threats. Winter hours of operation: Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feedings are at 2 p.m. General public admission with guided tours are at regular intervals. Please call before making the trip to verify it is not closed due to weather.

If you love sledding down Suicide Hill in Brookside … Ward Park 1000 SW. 22nd St., Blue Springs, MO This is a smaller, lesser-known hill, but it’s great for kids to learn how to sled.

Or for those wanting to sled but not go too fast. The hill is smooth, not too steep, and there are no hazards in the way. The best thing is that the little kids don’t need to worry about big kids sledding into them.

Corporate Woods 9200 Indian Creek Pkwy., Overland Park, KS Bring the older kids to this hill. The hill is steep, long, and fast. It also feels like you’re going to sled into I-435, so it’s the adrenaline rush big kids want. They won’t actually sled into I-435. We promise.

Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park W. 87th Street & Greenway Lane, Lenexa, KS If you’re not a toddler but don’t want to fly off the sled either, Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park has a good medium-thrill hill. You’ll get speed but the hill is smooth enough you won’t lose your sled. No one likes snow in their pants.

Feel Better. Breathe Easy. Kansas City and Olathe’s premier allergy, asthma and immunology clinic treating both children and adults. CONDITIONS TREATED

DOWNSIZING SHOULDN’T

MEAN SKIMPING ON DESIGN WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY AARON LEIMKUELER

Downsizing is on trend with both boomers—the largest age group in the U.S.—and empty nesters, but choosing a new, smaller living space does not mean cutting corners on luxury or convenience. These buyers tend to be very specific in their needs.

14

|

SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE

|

JANUARY 2020

T

here are several main drivers to a couple’s or individual’s desire to downsize. Some of these include:

•T he family members living under the same roof decreases in size. Just as a couple may search for a larger home for anticipated children in their early years, so too may they search for a smaller living space when children depart for college or begin families of their own. Sometimes the loss of a partner, whether from death or divorce, can also drive this decision. •O ne or both individuals retire. Retirement signals “the next era” in an individual’s life and tends to be a common trigger for downsizing. Not only is disposable income decreasing, but a desire for life to be easier to manage may emerge, and maintaining a large home can be one of the biggest headaches for the aging. One living option is lifestyle estates, which offer things like sports facilities, social functions, and health care within the community. •T he couple or individual downsizes as a part of their financial planning. More limited income may make the management of a large, expensive estate unrealistic, especially when the properties have all the “extras” like guest houses, pools, gardens, and more. •S ecurity can be another factor. A large sprawling estate can mean a great deal of expense in terms of upkeep and security when you consider expensive alarm camera systems and fencing. Simply put, the larger the home and property, the larger the security risk and expense. As such,

gated communities with security services often become appealing in later years. •L ocation can be a motivator. A couple may decide they wish to live closer to grown children or perhaps closer to the city if they are in the suburbs. The desire to spend less time in the car can be a motivator. •H ealth concerns may sometimes play a factor, especially with the elderly. For instance, a lack of mobility may drive the desire for the entire home to be located on one main floor, eliminating stairs from the daily routine. •F inally, the couple may simply be ready for a change of scenery and a new look for their life. Interior Designer Will Brown worked with one such couple in Kansas City on this type of project recently. “I worked with an executive couple who wanted a fresh start in living space and to be free of the onus of running a larger property,” explains Brown. “After some searching, this executive couple decided on a luxury condo in a prime location that offered spectacular views of the Country Club Plaza area, making great shopping, top restaurants, theaters, and major art museums only minutes away on foot.” He adds, “One additional benefit they’ve found with this new home is they now walk more than when they lived in their former Mission Hills home.”

HOME / STYLE CONT.

Just because the square footage of homes is less than their former home, the desire and demand for all the amenities and upgrades remain very important for couples. After the purchase, the creative process of design began. “Coming from Hallmark and Target with a background in product design and development, I always start with inspiration—creating a storyline. In this case, my clients were done with their very traditional interiors, which was music to my ears,” he enthuses. “We explored options during this process and decided on a soft, modern aesthetic influenced by elements found in nature. Nature also dictated the color palette and helped give this a peaceful and soothing feel.” The space was imagined with a sophisticated palette of muted pinks, mauves, grays, and

ivory with wood and antique brass finishes. All the lines on the selected furnishings and accessories echo a softened edge and circular or curved profile, which added to the softness and relaxed state of consciousness this recently retired couple wanted as they look to transition into a less hectic pace. Another consideration is changing up the furnishings. While the downsizing trend may be driven by simplifying life, it shouldn’t create a feeling of “settling.” As such, consider an estate sale as you leave the larger home and create some extra funds to shop for a smaller amount of new furniture that fits the unique design of your smaller space. Simply put, a fresh, simple start doesn’t have to be less luxurious or comfortable.

WHAT, WHERE Meet Ed Moore

Who: What:

ED MOORE Ed Moore is a self-proclaimed family guy, car guy, and radiology CEO at KC's Diagnostic Imaging Centers. He has spent the past six years serving patients and working with the best radiology staff in Kansas City. Diagnostic Imaging Centers’ mission is to provide cost-effective, quality medical imaging services in the Kansas City area. It’s a way for patients to avoid expensive hospital bills while having access to quality staff, the best doctors, timely results, and the latest technology. Some of their services include MRIs, CT scans, bone density scans, and mammography. Diagnostic Imaging Centers also has its own mobile 3D mammography coach bus that travels for breast cancer screenings.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE This is a tough one. I have spent time in the past few months finding great but off-the-beaten-path restaurants. There are many great ones, but if I had to choose a favorite it would be Chez Elle Crêperie and Coffeehouse for breakfast.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK Since I don’t drink alcohol, my vice is Dr. Pepper! The best place for Dr. Pepper is any place with a fountain that allows me to sit and talk with my beautiful wife.

FAVORITE SHOPPING Does Amazon count? If not, Best Buy in Overland Park. They have great staff (my son works there), and a knowledgeable Magnolia team makes trips there fun and occasionally expensive! My other favorite place (but I will not admit it if asked) is Aristocrat Motors for sports cars. (Shhh! Don’t tell my wife!)

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS National WWI Museum and Memorial. While not hidden, I love how well it depicts the past and how it pays homage to those who sacrificed for our freedoms.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS Back to the airport! Really if I had out-of-town guests (and I never do), I would probably take them to the Kaufman Center for Performing Arts. Kansas City is lucky to have a world-class location to experience performing arts.

GENOMIC TESTING HIGH-TECH SCIENCE FOR MORE PRECISE CANCER TREATMENT WRITTEN BY DAVID MARKS

Unless you or someone near and dear to you has already dealt with cancer, chances are you may not be familiar with the topic of genomic testing. But for many current cancer patients, genomic testing offers the possibility of new insight and hope for effective treatment. ed from the biopsy sample, and the cancer cells’ DNA is sequenced in the lab. Then, sophisticated equipment is used to help identify DNA abnormalities that may be driving the growth of a specific tumor. If these abnormalities match ones that may have previously responded to particular therapies, doctors may be able to recommend treatments that have been used in the past to target the same mutations.

It’s a new way of thinking about cancer

“In most cases, genomic testing is used to identify treatment options that would be considered in patients who have more advanced cancers— cancers that are larger, more invasive or have spread from where they started growing,” says Samuel Caughron, MD, Pathology, AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission.

“Advances are being made virtually every day that increase the cases where genomic testing can or should be used. The patient’s entire medical team, including the pathologist who’s actually looking through a microscope at their tissue to diagnose the cancer, determines when genomic testing is appropriate,” explains Caughron.

Genomic testing may also be appropriate to help provide the best care at the beginning of a patient’s cancer journey, and it may even help classify or diagnose what kind of cancer a patient has.

How genomic testing works It all starts when a biopsy is taken of the patient’s tumor. A pathologist identifies the cancer cells on a slide, DNA from the tumor is extract-

The traditional approach to cancer care has defined the disease and its treatment by its location—cancer in the breast is breast cancer, cancer in the lung is lung cancer. But in recent years, researchers and physicians have found that a cancer in one patient may not behave the same way in another patient. Some cancers even have similarities to cancers that were once thought to be completely different. A breast tumor, for example, may look and act like a lung tumor. There’s something all cancers have in common, though. They all contain genetic changes—or mutations—in the genetic code of their cells. These mutations cause cancer cells to grow and spread when they shouldn’t, which leads to the development of a tumor.

BE WELL CONT.

Today, advanced genomic testing can often identify the DNA alterations that may be driving the growth of a specific tumor. And this information may help doctors identify treatments specifically designed to target those mutations. This shift in thought and approach is a major step toward truly precise cancer care.

There’s a difference between genetic testing and genomic testing Genetic testing and genomic testing may sound similar, but they are very different procedures. Genetics refers to the genes a person is born with—

those inherited from past generations. “Genetic testing can be done using any DNA sample from a patient. It’s used to look for inherited conditions, including a patient’s risk for cancer,” says Caughron. Genomic testing helps identify the specific pattern of genetic mutations in a person’s cancer. “Genomic testing more often refers to testing the DNA that are in the cells of a tumor. We want to understand what is driving the cancer’s behavior and making the cancer grow out of control. It is usually used to identify possible treatment options,” explains Caughron.

With genomic testing, closer is better When AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission opened in 2014, genomic testing was utilized by sending biopsy samples out of state to various reference labs. However, in 2018 the testing started being done locally here in Kansas City to improve quality and turnaround time for patients and to give local doctors access to the latest advances that are driving cancer care today. STRETCH ZONE

IMPROVE YOUR FLEXIBILITY AND HEAL YOUR MUSCLES WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

We are taught at a young age that stretching is good for you. It doesn’t matter if you took physical education in 1940 or 2020, educators told you that it is beneficial to stretch before and after a workout. Yet adults don’t move quite like sixyear-olds. Most adults do not possess their full range of motion. Genetics, aging, diet, inactive lifestyles (or even overactive lifestyles) can all play a role in how our muscles love us or hate us at the end of the day. Simple movements such as reaching into the back of the car to get something can pull a muscle. We lose flexibility and muscle tone as we age, and it usually begins around age 30. Kelly Harrick is in the occupation of healing; she stretches muscles for a living. She is the owner of Stretch Zone—the only business of its kind

ties with less pain and stiffness,” the client says.

“Give us 30 minutes and I promise you will walk out feeling better,” Harrick says. “People walk out of here and are able to get on and off the floor to play with their kids without back and hip pain. One man said he’s improved his golf game due to less back pain and more mobility since starting at Stretch Zone.”

Most people know how to do standard stretches, but the secret of Harrick’s success lies in the patented strapping system secured around your hips and waist. The wide championship belt allows you to be stabilized on the table as a practitioner isolates your muscles and provides a better stretch. The practitioner makes an assessment of your natural range of motion through gentle pushes and pulls. Over time, your muscles start to feel better and your flexibility improves.

A client of Stretch Zone Lenexa agrees. “After multiple surgeries and loss of mobility, Stretch Zone has helped me improve my daily activi-

Chris Hubbard are in the occupation of healing through stretching clients’ muscles and restoring flexibility.

Humans have a neuromuscular component called the stretch reflex—if you try to stretch too far, your brain will not let you go that far again. Muscles don’t stretch like a rubber band. It’s more like a seatbelt. If you pull too hard, it stops and won’t go farther. If you gradually stretch it over a longer period of time, you see improved flexibility. Harrick says, “We stretch just under the threshold of the stretch reflex so we see more progress. You’ll never be above a seven out of ten on the pain scale.” With proper stretching, circulation is improved and a pain-free full range of motion develops. After the first free stretch, Stretch Zone recommends signing up for the 12-week program to see the maximum results. Each session is 30 minutes and you can opt for once, twice, or three times a week, depending on your personal needs.

If we all start with the base of stretching, everything else is better. Harrick has been a physical therapist for over 25 years, specifically working with orthopedic patients. She found Stretch Zone as a franchise opportunity where she could use her wellness background to help people and make them feel better. “Most people don’t spend a lot of time in preventative medicine. When I say exercise, what do you think: cardio, weights, core? No one says stretching. If you add the stretching component, you’ll be better at what you do. It’s a missing key,” Har-

rick explains. “If we all start with the base of stretching, everything else is better.” Stretch Zone can help people get ready for certain athletic events such as marathons or triathlons. It’s also good for recovery from big athletic events, although most clients are not athletes. The majority of people Harrick sees are people who say, “this isn’t as easy as it used to be.” “You don’t have to do any work here,” explains Harrick. “We do the work for you. Stretch Zone is meant for movement. The key is the stabilization. After you stretch with us, you’ll feel better immediately.” Check out Stretch Zone on Facebook and Instagram.

the latest workout trend, try out an app like ClassPass, a monthly service that lets you pick and choose which class (and gyms) you want to go to.

4 C ommit to one small exercise a day, then build on it. The holidays may be over, but

that doesn’t mean your schedule is getting any less busy! Finding time to exercise outside of work, school, or side hustles can seem impossible. Pick one small workout to do each day, whether it’s five minutes of jumping rope or 50 crunches, and stick to it for a week. It’s easy enough to commit to, and it will feel great to get back on a routine!

5 Drink Water. Colder tempera-

tures and busy work days may make swapping out a glass of water for another cup of tea or coffee practi-

cally mindless. Bring a reusable water bottle with you next time you head out the door to make a conscious decision to better your health (and the planet’s)!

6 Head Outside. Is cold weather

making you a hermit? Vitamin D helps support healthy immune, brain, and nervous systems—and plays a significant role in mental health. Bundle up for a coffee break outside or head to the park this weekend to soak up the sunshine!

7 Share with Others. Sometimes

it’s hard to remember just how far you’ve come. By sharing your progress with friends and family, you’ll be inspired to continue striving for a healthy lifestyle each day.

KACIE SILENCE IS GOLDEN

I am an introvert. I started a new job where I am around a lot of new people. I’m tired of hearing the question, “Why are you so quiet?.” I never know what to say to this. The tone seems a little judgmental as if something is wrong with me. Can you tell me a good response?

Let’s clear up one thing: an introvert is not the same as being shy. You are describing shyness. You’re most likely an introvert too, but being shy is being reserved or timid around people. Being an introvert means you “recharge” your emotional energy by being alone. An extrovert needs to be around people to recharge. Back to your question—and back to my answer—tell them you’re a good listener. You are, right? The people who make comments about your quietness are most likely not judging you. They may even think you’re judging them by not speaking. If they still don’t accept the “good listener” answer, you could always turn the question back to them and ask, “Does it bother you?” It shouldn’t.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

PARENTING

CHILDREN WITH TECHNOLOGY HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

I

s limiting screen time for your child an exercise in futility? It may be challenging and seem impractical, but it actually is worthwhile to watch for the dangers of overexposure to electronic media. Children and teens between the ages of 8 and 18 spend an average of seven or more hours per day looking at screens, which include TVs, phones, and computer screens. That’s as much time as they spend in school on a normal school day! According to Statista. com, almost 40 percent of children in the U.S. have a personal smartphone. And while it may be tempting to let your laptop, iPad, or smartphone occupy your child’s attention so you can get work done or take a much-needed break, it can actually be a dangerous tool to rely on. Too much screen time for your child can have negative effects, some of which include: • • • •

Impairment of sleep Poor cognitive development Lack of daily physical activity Contact with unsavory content or predators

What should you do? First and foremost, set limits and schedule times when your child can consume online media and television. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children under the age of five have no more than one hour per day. As children get older, you may increase this amount, but leave time for priorities such as physical activity, homework, family time, socializing, and especially sleep. Terri Clinton Dichiser, MA, JD, LCPC, NCC, owner of Take Charge, Inc., says that too much screen time can harm a family’s communication and relationships. “In private practice, I experience the effects of screen time on family relationships every day. It reduces the opportunity for parent-child contact and bonding. Instead of being engaged in conversations with family members and turning to each other, the child turns to a screen,” she explains. Dichiser continues, “The opportunity to address emotions through interactions with their parents is lost, replaced with learning to withdraw.

PARENTING CONT. This increases their behaviors to shut down their internal discomfort by turning to a screen. Increased conflict, arguing, yelling, and power struggles about screen usage often occur, which creates more distance in the parent-child relationship. It also reduces the opportunity for the child to learn and practice social skills.” Lead by example. This is the best way for your child to learn restraint with electronic devices; model the behavior you wish to see in them. Make sure you keep your child interested in positive things that do not involve a screen, whether it’s playing outside, board games, coloring, crafts, or other engaging activities. Another key factor is to encourage your child’s desire to read. The internet and television can be rivals for this reading time, which is an activity that helps your child develop in many ways.

At all times, you must track your child’s use of social media to keep them safe. This includes not just their social media accounts, but emails, texts, websites, and online articles. Another important rule is to set locations and activities in which your child cannot use electronic devices. This can be an obvious place such as the family dinner table, and you may consider including the car to help teach them to not text in the car while driving. You may also set a curfew for phones in the bedroom to help ensure your child is not sneaking screen time after you are in bed.

You don’t have to go at it alone There are several great apps on the market that are designed to help parents monitor their child’s screen time. Here are a few to consider:

•Z ift: This app not only helps parents monitor screen time, but it also gives parental controls such as reporting recent online searches, apps your child has downloaded, and alerts you if your child is looking at something too sensitive for their age. •N orton Family: This free app lets you monitor who your kids are talking to, social media images they are posting, and will track how much gaming they are doing. It also has an InstaLock feature for ensuring quality family time at the dinner table or on game night. •U nGlue: Teach your child to monitor their own time on the phone and the internet with this app. It has built-in features to help reward kids for a job well done. •S creen Time: Use this app to reward your child with screen time for finishing homework, chores, and more.

BEAUTY

MINDFUL SKINCARE STARTS WITH

THE BUILDING BLOCKS, BUT ENDS WITH YOU WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER

W

hen it comes to skincare, there’s no “one size fits all.” We spoke with award-winning clinical esthetician Jessica Pluff on being selfish in the name of skincare, why selfies have impacted the bigger conversations around us, and how you can practice a mindful routine for clear, healthy skin. Over the last few years skincare has had its own revival—a coming of age, even. Departing from its previous materialistic confinements, skincare is now often seen as a mindful practice; a routine so tied to our general well-being and sense of self that those who scoff and deem it “maximalism” are met with equal confusion by those who spend 10 minutes (minimum) on their skin. The early days of the new year are all about setting your goals for the next 365 days. If the months were a morning routine, January would be a steamy shower. We chatted with Exhale Skin Studio’s Jessica Pluff on how (and

34

|

JANUARY 2020

why) the secret to mindfulness might just be staring right back at you—if you’re looking in a mirror, that is. Before delving into the subject of mindful skincare, it’s important to distinguish its two main areas: basic and intentional. On the basic side, you have cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and sunscreen. These four steps should be the core to every home regimen. Moisturizing, though, can be confusing for some people, especially if they have oily skin—but oily skin still needs moisture. “You can be oil-rich and water-dry, which creates an imbalance in the skin and can cause a host of other problems,” says Pluff. “The key is to know what products to use and how.” Once you have the building blocks down, you can move up to more intentional products and techniques, including being mindful of what you put in your body. Foods or supplements that contain androgens like peanuts, peanut but-

ter, iodine (table salt), yogurt, cow’s milk, and seaweed—as well as toxins like nicotine and alcohol—all have an effect on your skin. While alcohol shows up sooner rather than later, sugar is a long-term killer of collagen in the skin. “Eventually, your skin breaks down because of poor diet,” Pluff says. “You can tell that someone’s not caring for themselves by the way it shows up on their skin.” Just like achieving meditation, skincare takes practice. “Skincare is one of the first places people turn to when they want to feel better about themselves,” Pluff says. “Skincare shouldn’t be stressful, and I think a lot of the idea that it is stressful comes from the self-imposed guilt we create when we make time for ourselves.” However, Pluff says, it’s when you’re caring for yourself that you can better care for the other people in your life. For 2020, that care is packaged in the form of cleansers, serums, and SPFs.

In part this is due to cult-like beauty brands who have taken the social media landscape by storm. On any given day, you can open Instagram and see a gaggle of golden hour selfies with halcyon cheekbones and flushed, bare faces. Acne scars, freckles, wrinkles—it’s all on display. Clear, healthy skin isn’t just about acne or wrinkle-free skin anymore. It’s about the happy glow, the flush you get from a cold winter night, the belly-aching laughs. It’s about how you feel on the inside and the introspective work on your own self it took to get there, which leads us to the question: Is it self care to post a selfie? To Pluff, it depends on the people with whom you surround yourself. “If you are posting something and your friends tell you that you look amazing without makeup, if they tell you you’re killing it with that eyeshadow, if they wonder where you got that lip color or why your skin is so ‘glowy,’ then yes!” Pluff concludes. “It’s such a confidence booster,

but it also opens a conversation, which provides a way to deepen relationships.” Perhaps that is the key to mixing mindful habits into a routine: to approach skincare with the end goal of experiencing a deeper connection. “So many of my clients at the end of a treatment will say, ‘Great, now I’m beautiful!’” Pluff says, with a hint of disbelief. So she gives them another building block—a simple, yet powerful, mantra: I am already gorgeous. This product is simply a tool to make me feel my best. In 2020, achieving clear, healthy skin with mindful practice may start with the building blocks, but it ends with you—where and how you decide to spend your time, what you put in and on your body, and the happiness created with and because of the people surrounding you. IMPROVING PERFORMANCE AND LESSENING INJURY FOR KANSAS CITY ATHLETES WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Kansas City is known for its love of sports. From the Chiefs to the Royals to the Sporting Kansas City, we have a dedication to our local teams. Kansas City is even ranked as one of the top cities in the United States for sports lovers in 2019 by WalletHub.com. But Kansas Citians don’t want to just watch sports, we also want to play sports. This is why businesses like Kansas City Strength & Conditioning (KCSC) have become important to the Kansas City culture. KCSC helps improve your athletic skills while reducing your likelihood of injury. Many parents’ biggest fear when their child begins playing sports is injury. “It’s not our job as strength coaches just to send a kid home tired,” explains Matt Hinkley, co-owner of KCSC. “It’s our job to make them better at their sport and improve their performance.” Hinkley explains they want to keep their clients on the field. When a teen leaves for college and no longer works with KCSC every day, the staff want to ensure their client has the knowledge and skills to manage aches and pains, and at the same time know how to create a training plan. In addition to ensuring safety and growth, KCSC also has a unique emphasis. John Renzi, co-owner of KCSC, explains he and Hinkley decided to build around their strengths. This is why they specialize in the development of overhead and rotational sports, primarily baseball and softball. “With baseball and softball players, there’s a need to make sure people’s shoulders and elbows are kept healthy,” explains Renzi. “Every sport has similarities—you need to be fast and you need to be strong—but because of the throwing motion in baseball and softball, you have to be mindful and know what you’re doing when training, and we’re good at that.”

A shared goal Hinkley and Renzi didn’t always know they’d be managing a strength and conditioning business in Kansas City. Hinkley grew up playing baseball in Liberty,

Missouri. He went on to play at Emporia State, but his junior year he began dealing with arm issues. He had an elbow injury, so instead of playing summer baseball, he decided to train at a facility in Massachusetts he found through a Google search.

combined with his business acumen could produce a solid business.

“It's rare to have the atmosphere Matt and John create. I definitely am better because of training at KCSC.”

One of their initial decisions when they created KCSC was that unlike other training facilities, Hinkley and Renzi wanted to tailor each training program to the individual’s needs. In order to make sure they are mindful of this, every exercise plan is unique. “All of the clients who come to our facility go through an initial evaluation to figure out how we are going to help them,” says Hinkley.

He didn’t know for sure what he was getting into, but after the first couple days he realized he’d made the right decision. He could see himself training others for a living, so as soon as he returned to school he met with his advisor and changed his major to exercise science.

This evaluation includes an extensive health history. They may reach out to physical therapists or orthopedic surgeons to make sure they’re going about the exercise plan in the healthiest manner. Also included are assessments of range of motion, mobility and flexibility, and movement. From there a training plan is tailored to that person’s needs and goals. In this way, they make sure they do more than just send their client home tired. They both improve their client’s performance and lessen likelihood of injury.

After graduating, Hinkley reached out to the facility where he trained and landed an internship. He drove to their Jupiter, Florida, location and worked there before returning to Kansas City to work at a local baseball training facility running the weight room. Meanwhile John Renzi worked in sales and marketing. He originally planned to be a high school teacher, but wasn’t satisfied. He loved baseball and played while he was in college, and he enjoyed exercise sciences, but didn’t see the field as a career. Nevertheless, his love for sports training grew, and he eventually realized his skills in exercise sciences

Hinkley and Renzi met each other a while before going into business together. They stayed in contact, and realized they both had the same professional goals, so in October 2016 they decided they’d be better off teaming up than competing.

Joey Wentz, who was a 2016 first round pick for the Atlanta Braves, says that being able to have the opportunity to train at KCSC has been one of the most vital things in his development as an athlete. “It's rare to have the atmosphere Matt and John create every day so I can get better. I definitely am better because of training at KCSC.”

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

JANUARY 2020

•A n article titled “It’s Okay to Think Your Toddler Is a Tiny, Horrible Human” •A book titled Toddlers Are Jerks and It’s Not Your Fault All right, don’t use the word “jerks.” Get a little more creative. We’re all adults here, but I know there are children who read this column so I’m keeping this PG. (I also don’t want to get fired.) They’re not jerks. They’re worse than jerks. (Hint: it

starts with an A.) Toddlers have taken over the category of parent humor on the internet. Memes, YouTube videos, a picture of your cousin’s kid in a meltdown on Facebook. They’re the kings and queens of jerks. I used to think the worst age to parent was one-year-olds (you can only relax when they’re in a crib and highchair), followed by threeyear-olds (the worst kind of tod-

dler), then two-year-olds (the second worst kind of toddler), and finally newborns. Give me cracked nipples, a sore birth canal, and no sleep over a toddler any day. But my dad’s advice to me was, “Just wait until junior high.” I have a daughter in junior high and another daughter on deck. “IT’S CALLED MIDDLE SCHOOL, MOM. LIKE, OMG. YOU’RE SO OLD AND UNCOOL. STOP TALKING” [door slams]. Welcome to the middle school years.

My dad was right. He tried to warn us. What am I supposed to do? Kick her out of the house? Hide? Pray for the toddler years to come back? Toddlers may reign as kings and queens of parent humor, but that’s because they can. Imagine if toddlers could read and understand everything you write about them on the internet. Imagine they could read your texts to your friends from your phone. The only way middle school parents can discuss their middle schooler is together in the shower like their home

is bugged. “GROSS! WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THE SHOWER?! I SAID I WAS HUNGRY AN HOUR AGO! LIKE, NO ONE MAKES ME FOOD. I’M LITERALLY STARVING” [door slams]. Middle school parents are trying to not raise jerks. The true kings and queens of jerks are middle schoolers. It’s an unsaid honor every middle school parent wants to tell you. Just wait until junior high.

JANUARY 2020

Whether you’re feeding out-of-town friends and family or hosting a party, spend less time in the kitchen and more time with those you love. This simple ingredient and super-tasty sandwich will certainly feed a hungry crowd. Be sure to add this recipe to your holiday menu this year!

New England Clam Chowder SERVES: 6-8

Ingredients

Directions

2 cups frozen potato cubes 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced celery 1 8-oz. bottle of clam juice 2 6.5-oz cans of chopped or minced clams 11/2 sticks butter 1/2 cup flour 1 quart heavy cream (optional: substitute with half and half) 1 teaspoon sugar Salt/pepper, to taste

In a large skillet, bring potatoes, onion, celery, bottle of clam juice and the juices only from the two clam cans to a boil. Be sure the juices cover the vegetables. Turn heat to medium and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. In a small sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour using a whisk and cook approximately 2 minutes. Continue stirring with the whisk, add heavy cream, sugar, and salt/pepper. Continue heating until it begins to thicken. Remove from heat.

Add clams, butter/cream mixture and vegetables to the slow cooker. Heat on low for approximately 2 hours. Serve in a sourdough bread bowl or topped with your favorite cracker. And don’t forget the fresh-cracked pepper! Source: Pam Ruane, Friend
