Definatel young players are forced to wear shin guards thanks to their parents as they still feel responsabile for them, at a certain point they grow up and that child become quickly a teenager who pretend to know it all.

Taking full responsabilty and the risk to get hurt.

Shin guards is not my only concern as there are other risk that are being taken forgranted.

Kids who come for training and back home alone without being escort by a parent or an adult guarden person.

Simon Spiteri - Editor Through this issue my main focus is on the health and safety of our players and members both on and off the playing field.

Honestly there is a mystery around us – Why teen and senior team players does not wear Shin Guards. While young ones do !!

While I was standing and watching players during training a session I noticed that a seven year old was wearing shin guards like he was going to play a rugby match, and arrived in time for training. While another player from the youth sector was training a one to one situation without shin guards and an ear ring, plus other accesories.

Parents who does not provide their children sufficient water or other iso drinks to prevent their kids becoming dehydrated and to evoid fainting during training. Without mention that there are also children that does not take a simple breakfast in the morning before training.

Our nursery invest in coaches of high reputations on our Island, who are qualified both by Uefa an MFA to educate our teen players . Unfortunately we still have unresponsabile players who still come for training unproperly dressed for training. Not to mention some of them the smoke cigarest just after training.

May I take this opportunity to uncourage parents to warn their children and to take th neccessary action before it is too late. It is useless after an accident happen to blame others rather to blame our selves.

How much do we take our safety seriously.

The older we get the more in responsible we become to our selves. Unmature youth player as we believe we are strong enough and that we are not prome to accidents too.

To finish on a positive note – our under 15 and under 17 started the pre-season with a couple of friendly games alredy played and especcially our young once they obtained a briliant result.

However who is reponsible the coach, committee or the player – I say it’s everyone responsability however the player himself is the one to deal with his injury that could terminate his carrer and steal his hobby and joy at an early age.

Soccer Shin Guards: Why You Need Them The use of shin pads is of paramount importance where player protection and safety are concerned. They are so vital that their compulsory use is sanctioned in the laws governing association football. Law 4 (The Players' Equipment) lists them as basic compulsory equipment. The terms "shin pads" and "shin guards" are often used interchangeably. However, the latter is the broader (and more appropriate) term.

Soccer is a contact sport. Unfair contact between players is prohibited by soccer law.

However, even fair challenges can involve substantial contact. In addition, the fact that harsh tackles and serious foul play are infringements does not mean that they do not occur regularly.

Shin guards protect our vulnerable shins from the exposure to tackles, kicks and other knocks. Our shin bones are not properly insulated by muscle and tissue. Their location and proximity to the locus of action in soccer (our feet) make their use a priority. Without adequate protection in that area, you are not supposed to be allowed to play. You might feel that it should be your choice to wear such protection. However, that is the same as stating that you should have the option to wear the seatbelt or not.

Some laws are designed to enforce a social contract while others are designed for our own good (even though they punish us for infringing them). The penalty for not wearing adequate shin-protection is being prevented from playing or refusal of entry to the field of play. Soccer is serious about player safety.

Of the basic compulsory equipment, shin guards are the only one that has further stipulations. According the FIFA law, they must "be covered entirely by the stockings", " be made of a suitable material" and "provide a reasonable degree of protection". All of these stipulations are designed to protect the player wearing the equipment and other players as well.

It would be harmful to other players if one player decided to wear metal-plated shin guards, for example. Conversely, it would be foolhardy and useless if a player decides to use cardboard strips instead of the recommended rubber, plastic or other approved material. Shin-protection does not guarantee non-injury, particularly in instances of serious foul play and misconduct.

However, it is like an insurance policy. In the event of contact (which invariably happens frequently in soccer), it reduces the risk of injury to your shin bone.

Without ample protection for your shins, you may not be able to play. The worst part is that if you do, you may end up with several cuts, abrasions or even a broken shin bone.

Protecting your shin reduces your vulnerability on the soccer field and enables you to play with reduced fear.

Under 17 and Under 15 – Pre Season 2016 – 17 Round up In preperation for the upcoming season our Under 17 and under 15 teams, kicked off their six week preseason program. Intense training under the Supervision of our Head Coach Claude Chetcuti and our qualified coaches.

A number of friendlies to test the players ability already have been played. These games helped their respective coaches to identify weak points and to set training session to address these issues.

Coaching Defenders in a 4-2-3-1 This article explores how to coach the goalkeeper and defensive unit in a 4-2-3-1 formation, both in and out of possession.

Structure In the above scenario, the Goalkeeper has secured possession of the ball and the defensive unit takes up a shape to provide the ‘Keeper with forward passing options.

Width is provided through the advanced Full Backs, and the positioning of the Centre Backs on the corners of the 18 yard box creates a problem for the opposition attacking line; if they track the Centre Backs then one of the Defensive Midfielders can drop in to receive and if they mark the space then the Centre Backs can receive.

The defensive unit of a 4-2-3-1 consists of a Goalkeeper, 1 Left Full Back, 2 Centre Backs and 1 Right Full Back.

In this formation defenders tend to use a man-for-man marking system, with the Centre Backs picking up opposition Strikers whilst the Full Backs tuck inside and track movements of opposition Wingers.

Further protection is added by the defensive screen created by the ‘double pivot’ of the Defending Midfielders.

In possession Playing out from the back The 4-2-3-1 formation provides numerous options for the Goalkeeper and defensive players to play out from the back.

The shape adopted by the defensive unit is important to be able to provide width and depth to receive the ball, whilst also offering defensive security in case negative transition occurs and possession is lost.

Scenario 1

If the opposition attempt to press aggressively and high up the pitch the Goalkeeper has the option to take a number of the opposition players out of the game by playing over or through them into the Attacking Midfielders, with the advancing Full Backs providing support in wide areas.

Full Backs supporting the attack Full Backs in this system are key to providing width to the attack in order to allow the Attacking Midfielders to come inside and overload central areas, exploiting the space between the opposition Full Backs and Centre Backs.

During a match the Full Backs will, at times, be required to get high up the pitch to support the attack then, if the opposition gain possession and attempt to counter attack, they will need to be able to recover quickly and delay the opposition attack.

Therefore, in this formation, the Full Backs must be fit enough to meet the challenges of one of the most physically demanding roles in football.

This also requires that Full Backs have good game understanding of when to support the attack and when to stay and offer defensive cover in the game.

Scenario 4

The Full Backs in this scenario are advanced up the pitch and stay level with the deepest point of the opposition midfield line. This flattens and stretches the midfield unit of the opposition, creating space behind, in front and through the unit to receive.

The Centre Backs have responsibility for containing the opposition Forwards. The Full Backs narrow off to prevent penetrating passes in between them and the Centre Back, and also be in a position to press and affect opposition Wingers.

Blue 2 and 3 may receive directly from Blue 8 with a ball in behind, or may become involved in the second or third phase of play if the ball is played forwards into the Attacking Midfielders.

Further defensive cover is provided in central areas by the defensive screen of Blue 6 and 8, restricting forward passes and occupying space in and around the edge of the penalty area (Zone 14).

The Centre Backs main responsibility in this system is to offer defensive stability and protect the goal, however rotation may occur with one of the Defensive Midfielders to allow the Centre Backs to break opposition lines and exploit space when in possession.
