1.In this witty and charming number from Wicked, Glinda the Good Witch offers her hilariously over-the-top guidance on how to become popular. With bubbly humor and sparkly flair, this song explores the themes of friendship, identity, and transformation in the magical land of Oz.
2. In Fiddler on the Roof, the daughters of Tevye playfully speculate about the matches the local matchmaker might bring. Their teasing slowly gives way to a deeper contemplation of love, marriage, and the social expectations that shape their lives.
3. This whimsical and defiant anthem from Peter Pan captures the joy of eternal youth. Peter and the Lost Boys declare their refusal to embrace the responsibilities of adulthood, celebrating the freedom and innocence of childhood.
4. From The Sound of Music, this humorous choral piece sees the nuns of Nonnberg Abbey attempting to describe the headstrong and endearing Maria. With affection and exasperation, they ponder her unpredictability in a song that has become a classic.
5. In this trio from How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, three characters navigate a day full of workplace confusion, flirtation, and near-romantic missteps. A clever mix of dialogue and melody, it captures the tension between ambition and affection in a 1960s office setting.
6. A comic gem from Carousel, this solo lets a rough-around-theedges New Englander share his unexpectedly tender feelings about his wife and their domestic life—through the lens of his prized geraniums. It’s a humorous, heartfelt glimpse into everyday love.
7. In Waitress, three women find solace in their shared dreams and vulnerabilities. This gentle, intimate trio reflects their desire for escape and comfort, with lush harmonies underscoring themes of friendship, support, and self-discovery.
8. Intermission. Take a break, stretch your legs, and prepare for Act II!
9. This rollicking trio from Aladdin features Aladdin’s friends embarking on a daring quest. With sweeping music and high energy, it’s a fun and fast-paced ode to overconfidence and camaraderie.
10. A touching ballad from Annie, this solo reveals the title character’s quiet hope and longing for the family she’s never known. It’s a moving glimpse into the heart of a child holding on to dreams in uncertain times.
11. A jazzy, flirtatious trio from The Boys from Syracuse, this number features three women using music to win attention and a meal. It’s a stylish celebration of charm and confidence.
12. From Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures, this haunting, stylized number follows sailors enchanted by a mysterious woman. The beautiful harmonies and Eastern-influenced musical motifs explore the allure of the unknown and the misunderstandings it can create.
13. This introspective ballad from A Little Night Music is one of Stephen Sondheim’s most iconic works. A character reflects on the ironies and regrets of a missed romance with quiet dignity and emotional nuance.
14. In this powerful trio from The Witches of Eastwick, three women, each yearning for love and connection, sing of their desires about finding the ideal man. As their voices intertwine, the song builds with passion, humor, and a hint of magic. Together, they channel their shared longing into a bold declaration of empowerment, showing that while love may be elusive, sisterhood is a force to be reckoned with.
15. This sweet and sincere duet from Into the Woods captures a turning point in a couple’s relationship. As they face challenges together, they realize the strength they find in one another—and that true partnership takes effort, growth, and trust.
16. A rousing anthem from Newsies, this energetic closer inspires audiences to stand up, speak out, and take action. With powerful vocals, bold choreography, and unwavering spirit, it’s a fitting finale celebrating unity, courage, and the power of youth. This number comes from one of Ms. Simone’s favorite musicals, making its message of resilience and determination all the more meaningful.

I am so excited to present the “Seize the Day” Recital!
As the school year wraps up, I wanted to create something fun and challenging for my students— something that might push them in new ways, maybe even in ways they didn’t expect. While I’ve had the joy of performing in scenes recitals myself, I took the leap into directing my first one two years ago with my SVS singers—and it’s since become a cherished tradition. This recital is a collection of scenes from musicals across the decades, offering students the opportunity to explore characters, harmonies, storytelling, and collaboration.
This year’s finale, “Seize the Day,” is especially ambitious due to its extensive choreography—but it also provides a unique chance for the entire voice studio to come together as one ensemble. There’s something truly powerful about hearing all of my students raise their voices together on one stage.
It means so much to me to share this moment with you. I know these incredible performers will leave their hearts on that stage and deliver a performance to remember.
I hope you enjoy the show!
Warmly,
Ms. Simone
