The Hague
A Story that Inspired Art The Hague artist, Marjolein van der Sluis, asked herself, “Why do modern women surround themselves with beautiful objects, why carry them, treasure them like relics?” Modern princesses wandering the streets of the 21st century have vague memories of the past, when princesses dreamt in their towers, languished on plush pillows dressed in exquisite fabrics and felt protected from evil by their knights and princes. ‘Reading Alexandre Dumas Fils La Dame aux Camélias, I was confronted with the symbolism of something as simple as a flower. In her suffering and pain over an unrequited love, the tragic heroine wore a camellia to the opera as a symbol of her eternal devotion. The story inspired the painting of Lady with the Camellias.’
‘She looks at us with a gaze we recognise; it seems distant but is full of yearning for her lover.’ Lady with the Camellias by Marjolein van der Sluis name: LA DAME AUX CAMELIAS size: 100cm x 150cm medium: OIL ON CANVAS
