In October, Ibiza and Formentera celebrate their famous end-of-season events, commercially known as ‘closings’, to cap off the tourist season.

But the islands never really close. The summer season may be over, but autumn is chock-full of interesting things to do with ideal temperatures that historically range from a maximum of 25ºC (77ºF) to a minimum of 14ºC (57ºF). Plus, the summer has ended with positive figures and the forecasts for 2020 are encouraging. To discover more, Nativ Radar has interviewed representatives from different areas of the tourism sector on the island associated with the six topics around which the brand revolves: culture, ecology, music, food, health and people. Where to…

to launch a publication like Nativ Radar this month – because we need to walk together hand-in-hand to extend our tourist season, and, of course, to highlight the wonders of our islands during low season.

In this issue, we’ve done everything possible to offer a really positive balance of the summer that’s just come to a close. In Ibiza we have to do things well, to work hard, and, of course, to urge the authorities to take action on many issues, including housing, which needs to be solved ASAP! I’ll leave you to enjoy the contents we’ve prepared for you. Inside, you’ll find an endless number of exciting ideas for October and beyond, from 20 reasons to visit Ibiza’s World Heritage sites on the 20th anniversary of their declaration by UNESCO, to an exciting interview with two local music legends, Pippi and Joan Ribas, a report on what Ibiza clubs are doing to eliminate plastic, and advice on what fruits and vegetables are in season here at this time of year, among many others.

What are the new tourist trends affecting Ibiza and Formentera?

Nativ Radar talks to six key business owners to find out Reconocidos empresarios de las Pitiusas analizan para Nativ Radar las tendencias turísticas actuales de una nueva temporada alta.

Ibiza’s mix of the traditional and the cosmopolitan is one of its main tourist attractions. // Lo tradicional y lo cosmopolita se funden en Ibiza, ese es uno de sus principales atractivos turísticos.

At the start of the summer, expectations had been limited. The recovery of competing markets and the decline of the pound pointed to a fall in the tourism business on Ibiza and Formentera.

But now as we reach the end of another high season, the balance for 2019 is once again positive. So say Guillermo Romero Parra, director of the Parra&Romero Gallery; Tom Brantsthen, owner of Can Martí Agritourism Hotel, and Toni Palau, owner of Garbi Hotel, who are all highly upbeat.

In the wellbeing sector, Erin Knowles, founder of My Island Retreats, highlights the island’s positioning within the US market and an increase in the number of companies running retreats on the island as positive tendencies. She also notes that “conscious breathing therapies are currently the trend”, adding to what the island has to offer.

Pedro Matutes, president of the Ibiza and Formentera Culinary Academy, has his own views. “It is important to bet on gastronomic culture and leverage the high-quality cuisine we have on the islands. This is one of the aspects our visitors value the most.”

In the nightlife sector, Maria May, a music agent at global artist agency CAA, says the island’s appeal shows no sign of waning. “Playing Ibiza is still very important in the electronic music industry,” she acknowledges, adding that “club-wise, and most certainly VIPwise, the island has become a weekend market with Thursday to Monday being the strongest days.” She also notes that “this year it certainly felt like a lot of people I know were not here for the clubs at all, but for retreats and all the healthy/ alternative things Ibiza has to offer.”

his gallery over the summer, noting “that Ibiza is positioned as a meeting point for the world of art.” He goes on to add that the island “has welcomed artists and intellectuals since the 1930s, the current trend in tourism draws people who not only have greater purchasing power but who are also interested in the island’s identity and their intellectual enrichment.”

On the issue of sustainability, Brantsthen says guests at his agritourism hotel, Can Martí, are for the most part families and young couples who value simplicity and quality. “They’re people who are conscious of the environment and nature.”

All the representatives Nativ talked to from the brand’s key fields of interest (culture, ecology, music, cuisine, health and people) confirm that Ibiza is continuing the line it has followed since its early days as a tourist destination – promoting a ‘live and let live’ philosophy with a wide range of settings providing things to do, locations, beaches and moments for every sort of holiday. As model Mark van der Loo is quoted as saying in Juan Suárez’s book Amigos de Ibiza (Friends of Ibiza): “The biggest luxury there is on Ibiza is that every person has a place: from millionaires to hippies, young or old. It’s a paradise for everyone.”

Not that there’s room for complacency.

Matutes believes that business owners need to keep doing things well and “look for points that differentiate us and make us more attractive.” Meanwhile, Knowles says it wouldn’t be amiss to “lower the prices a bit” and Palau advises business owners to “capture new markets, especially given the possibility of a hard Brexit and considering the high percentage of British tourists we get.”

On the other hand, this winter the airlines have increased the number of seats from the UK to the Balearics by 29%.

Moreover, Spanish national airport operator AENA’s figures show a rise in passenger traffic in the low season, which will help alleviate the winter slump.

Las expectativas al comienzo del verano fueron prudentes: la recuperación de mercados competidores o la bajada de la libra auguraban un descenso en el negocio turístico. Sin embargo, a punto de alcanzar el fin de una nueva temporada alta, la balanza es un año más, positiva. Así lo asegura Guillermo Romero Parra, director de la galería Parra&Romero, que al igual que Tom Brantsthen, propietario del agroturismo Can Martí y Toni Palau, propietario del Hotel Garbi, hacen una buena valoración de la temporada.

Para Pedro Matutes, presidente de la Academia Gastronómica de Ibiza y Formentera “es importante apostar por la cultura gastronómica y aprovechar el gran nivel culinario que tenemos en las islas”. “Se trata de uno de los ámbitos que más valoran nuestros visitantes”, afirma.

Maria May, agente musical, cree que cada vez más personas eligen a Ibiza como destino debido a sus opciones saludables. Pero también reconoce la valía de la marca Ibiza para los artistas musicales “en sus carreras como DJs”. “Pinchar en Ibiza todavía es muy importante en la industria de la música electrónica”, explica, confirmando así que la oferta de ocio se mantiene viva.

Romero Parra expresa su sorpresa ante el aumento de visitantes en su galería durante este verano lo que indica, “que Ibiza se sitúa ya como un punto de encuentro del mundo del arte”. Si es cierto que la isla “acogió desde los años 30 a artistas e intelectuales, hay una tendencia turística actual no sólo con un mayor poder adquisitivo, sino gente que se interesa por la identidad de la isla, por enriquecerse intelectualmente”.

Brantsthen, referente de sostenibilidad con su agroturismo Can Martí, explica que su principal cliente es el familiar y parejas jóvenes que valoran “lo sencillo y la calidad”. “Gente concienciada con el medio ambiente y con la naturaleza”, agrega.

Sin embargo, hay que seguir haciéndolo bien y “buscar puntos de diferenciación que nos hagan más atractivos”, según Pedro Matutes. “Bajar un poco los precios”, reconoce Knowles o “captar nuevos mercados”, expresa Palau, “sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que llegue un Brexit duro y considerando el alto porcentaje de turismo británico que recibimos”.

Pero, por el contrario, las aerolíneas han programado más plazas para este invierno desde el Reino Unido a Baleares, en concreto un 29% más de asientos, y las cifras de AENA nos muestran, además, un incremento del tráfico de pasajeros en los meses de temporada baja, ayudando a paliar la estacionalidad. Durante el mes de octubre Ibiza y Formentera están repletas de planes interesantes, con temperaturas suavizadas y el mar aún cálido; precios muy competentes y un ambiente paradisiaco. Ibiza is paradise on earth, as we all know. But it’s also a special World Heritage site – one of the few on UNESCO’s list with four protected areas, which were added on December 4, 1999. This year, the Dalt Vila Acropolis and its walls, the Posidonia oceanica prairies, the Phoenician-Punic necropolis at Puig des Molins and the Phoenician settlement in Sa Caleta are all celebrating the 20th anniversary of their inclusion. To mark the occasion, Ibiza Town Hall’s councillor for culture and heritage, Pep Tur, presents 20 related facts to help us better understand the island’s fascinating history.

In late July, a turtle became the star of an historic event on Ibiza. For the first time, a female loggerhead spawned 58 eggs in the Balearic Islands, on Platja d’en Bossa. But then, just a few days later, a second female deposited a further 102 eggs at Es Cavallet beach. The species has begun moving west from its traditional breeding sites in the eastern Mediterranean (1,400 nests were counted in Greece last year) as a result of warming seas caused by climate change. As Nativ Radar went to press, the eggs were gradually starting to hatch. We have to say the new Ibizan turtles are incredibly cute!

A finales del pasado mes de julio una tortuga protagonizaba un acontecimiento histórico en Ibiza: era la primera vez que un ejemplar de la especie caretta caretta desovaba 58 huevos en una playa de Baleares, concretamente en la de Platja d’en Bossa. Pero, además, hubo una segunda, pocos días después y en es Cavallet, donde depositó hasta 102 huevos. La razón de la nidificación de esta especie al oeste del Mediterráneo, y no como es lo habitual al este (en Grecia se contaron más de 1.400 nidos el año pasado), está motivada por el calentamiento del mar, fruto del cambio climático.

Al cierre de este periódico, los huevos iban poco a poco eclosionado. ¡Las nuevas tortuguitas ibicencas son tan monas!

Pedalling around Ibiza Ibiza a pedales Amsterdam led the way in 1964, and now most of the world’s cities have embraced some sort of bicycle sharing system. The route begins at the Des Fum Caves in the village of Pilar de la Mola. From there, walk one-and-a-half kilometres down the so-called Roman Road, while enjoying panoramic views of the smaller Pityusan island, bordering the cliffs of Racó de Sa Pujada and cutting across a wonderful lush pine forest. Don’t forget your camera – the views are amazing! Start at the Port of Ibiza and head towards Talamanca Beach from Paseo Juan Carlos I, before continuing along the wooden boardwalk to Avenida de Cap Martinet. There, turn off to the right, where you find a wide track that leads straight to S’Estanyol Beach. Once there, it’s time to have a snack, enjoy the pretty cove and pamper your little one! Ses Torres d’en Lluc is a mysterious settlement. Nobody knows for sure when it was built, even though archaeologists have studied the area. To get there, begin your itinerary on the road from Santa Agnés to Sant Mateu, turning off on the left.

Continue on the winding road to Es Camp Vell until you find the path that leads to your destination, amid a desolate landscape. At the end of the road, the wonderful panoramic view of Cala Aubarca appears to save you. Ses Torres d’en Lluc es un misterioso asentamiento del que no se sabe la época en la que fue construido, a pesar del trabajo de los arqueólogos en la zona. Para llegar a él iniciamos la ruta en la carretera de Santa Agnés a Sant Mateu, tomando la desviación a la izquierda. Avanzando por el sinuoso camino es Camp Vell comienza un sendero que nos lleva a nuestro destino, en medio un paisaje desolado. Al fondo, nos salva la maravillosa panorámica de Cala Aubarca.

This routes takes you to the highest point on Ibiza, Sa Talaia, at 475 metres. Even so, it’s an easy hike and clearly signposted. You’ll find pine forests and juniper trees and even a Punic-Roman rural settlement, Ses Païses de Cala d’Hort, with two burial grounds. Once you reach the top, you can touch Ibiza’s sky, enjoying an incredible panoramic view of the island with Formentera on the horizon. Esta ruta nos permite alcanzar el punto más alto de Ibiza, sa Talaia, con 475 metros. Aún así, es una ruta fácil y está bien indicada. Encontrarás bosques de pinos y sabinas y hasta un asentamiento rural púnico-romano, ses Païses de Cala d’Hort, con dos necrópolis. Una vez arriba, puedes tocar el cielo de Ibiza, con una panorámica increíble de la isla y Formentera al horizonte.

My neighbourhood SANT JOAN DE LABRITJA Book a perfect agrotourism stay in Sant Joan de Labritja for an idyllic getaway in Ibiza’s least populated, most traditional and least touristy municipality. After you’ve been enchanted by the perfect natural setting, swap the peace for a shot of adrenaline by heading up to Cala de Sant Vicent on October 19 and 20 to get a first-hand look at the 34th edition of the Pujada a Sa Cala, a mountain motor-racing event and veritable vehicle party that draws thousands of people each year to marvel at the spectacle offered by the drivers. If you’ve still got any energy left, take a guided walking tour around the area. There’s one scheduled on October 12 from the town to Benirrás along rural roads and paths. Once you’ve experienced all that, you’ll surely want to stay here forever.

FORMENTERA As if being able to enjoy this paradise in all its splendour in mild temperatures and bright sunshine weren’t enough, Formentera also boasts a perfect mix of activities in autumn. Throughout October, the island offers discounts on cruises, rental vehicles and active tourism, as well as the chance to sample menus of local cuisine at a fixed price of 20 euros. It also hosts the Save Posidonia Forum, which continues to work to ensure the sustainability of this very important seagrass, and two major sporting events, the Illa de Formentera Triathlon and the BTT Bicycle Tour. On top of that, you have wellbeing event Formentera Zen, the Collective Signatures artists’ residency and, if you’re in the party mood, the fiestas in Pilar de la Mola to celebrate.

The route starts at Puig de Missa, the symbol of Villa del Río, located atop a hill 52 metres above sea level and built at the time of the Berber pirates. La festa de Tots Sants THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS

Enric Ribes i Marí In pre-Roman times, the pagans celebrated a feast to mark the end of summer and the beginning of the cold season. On the Pityusan Islands, this feast was transformed into the feast of All Saints on November 1, followed by the Day of the Dead on November 2.

On the eve of November 1, families enjoyed a hearty dinner of fried suckling pig and a pie made of pine nuts that they had gathered during the day. All Saints’ Day was often celebrated by eating roasted chestnuts and panellets, a typical seasonal cake. Young Ibicencans would go from door to door asking for food with the phrase: “Is there anything for the souls?”

Most households handed out candy, sweets or nuts, but if they had nothing to offer they would respond by saying: “Not even for the bodies!” In this case, children and adults alike drew on their ingenuity to come up with snappy replies. “Well, may your bum fall apart!” some children might say. To which the non-giver could answer, “And may you eat it!” The children would then continue on their rounds.

Younger children would often get a sweet gift from their godparents: a sugary rosary composed of enormous candied-fruit beads that was sold in pastry shops across Ibiza.

Once All Saints’ Day was over, it was customary to leave an oil lamp burning all night and leave the table set in case any souls came to visit. This marked the beginning of the day dedicated to all of the family’s dead, with the obligatory visit to the cemetery.

La festa pagana d’origen preromà que marcava la fi de l’estiu i l’inici de l’època freda es va transformar, a les Pitiüses, en la festa de Tots Sants, seguida del dia dels Morts, els dies 1 i 2 de novembre respectivament.

La nit prèvia al dia 1 solia fer-se un bon sopar familiar, amb frita de porcella i amb una trencada de pinyons, que s’havien anat a buscar durant el dia. El dia de Tots Sants se solia celebrar menjant castanyes torrades i panellets, un pastís típic d’aquest temps. Els al·lots jóvens eivissencs solien fer un recapte d’aliments passant de casa en casa.

La frase habitual era: “Que hi ha res per ses ànimes?”. La reacció solia ser donar caramels, dolços, fruits secs... però si no hi havia donació, la resposta era: “Ni mancos pes cossos!”. I en aquest cas, l’enginy d’al·lots i adults havia desenvolupat petites rèpliques: “Idò mal vos caiga es cul a trossos!”, replicava algun al·lot. “I tu te’l mengis a mossos”, responia el no-donant. I la jovenalla continuava el recapte.

Els més petits solien rebre un llaminer regal per part dels seus padrins: un rosari ensucrat, elaborat amb uns grans de proporcions descomunals que eren fruites confitades, que es venia a les pastisseries eivissenques.

En acabar el dia de Tots Sants, a la nit, era costum deixar una llàntia encesa tota la nit i taula parada per si hi havia visita de les ànimes. Començava, així, el dia dedicat a tots els difunts de la família, amb l’obligada visita als cementeris.

1 Spot Ibiza’s beautiful birds. Early September until late October is the best time to spot the elegant clusters of flamingos that congregate on the salt flats of Ses Salines. Stopping to rest on their migratory journey south to warmer climes, the peachy-hued and impossibly pretty flamingo is perhaps Ibiza’s most-loved visitor. October and November are also the best months to spot species such as little ringed plovers, black-winged stilts, herons, ospreys and peregrine falcons. Observar las hermosas aves ibicencas. Desde principios de septiembre y hasta finales de octubre es la mejor época del año para observar a los elegantes flamencos que colonizan las salinas de Ses Salines.

Estas aves tan increíblemente bonitas color melocotón hacen escala en la isla para descansar durante su viaje migratorio hacia los climas cálidos del sur, y posiblemente sean las viajeras más queridas de Ibiza. Octubre y noviembre también son los mejores meses para observar otras especies como el chorlitejo grande, la cigüeñuela común, las garzas, el águila pescadora o el halcón peregrino.

2 Forage for wild food. Ibiza’s natural bounty knows no bounds and October sees the return of the gloriously elemental tradition of foraging for wild mushrooms. The cool, damp forest floor is where we find Ibiza’s most prized mushroom – the earth-toned rovellón – hiding beneath deep grass and pine needles. Keen eyes may also spot the federico and mucosa varieties. Elsewhere, Ibiza’s rich hedgerows and sun-drenched plateaus are laden with springy green herbs and ripe figs. The BTT La Mola (October 27) is for competitive cyclists. The Formentera Triathlon (October 5) has three different categories: Olympic (1,500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run), Sprint (750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run) and a Relay option.

You’ve probably heard that the full moon in October is the prettiest of the year. Although this isn’t scientifically proven, such factors as the length of the night or the change of seasons influence the way we perceive the satellite. That’s why we asked Jordi Pereyra, a science educator and member of Ibiza’s Astonomical Association, to recommend three places from which to contemplate the moon.

10 Swim in open waters. Take advantage of the new open-water swimming channel in Es Soto, which was inaugurated this summer and will remain open through October 31. The 650-metre-long and 50-metre-wide channel is delimited by buoys at distances of five metres between the white ones and 25 between the red ones. Nadar en aguas abiertas. Aprovecha el nuevo canal de natación en aguas abiertas de es Soto, que se ha puesto en marcha este verano y que se mantendrá habilitado hasta el 31 de octubre. Seafood, fish and rice dishes are specialities and have gained an enviable reputation among Ibiza’s in-the-know residents – the ones willing to seek out truly memorable food.

DEL HUERTO A LA MESA

As autumn arrives, we don’t just start bidding farewell to high temperatures, we also get ready to start eating a more calorific diet to see us through the colder weather.

The fields of Ibiza provide us with a wide variety of crops based around local products that are ideal for our health. We chatted to Marina Cardona, founder and farmer at the Can Puvil organic farm in Sant Josep, to get her advice about the island’s best autumn ingredients.

According to Cardona, now is the time to harvest the season’s last tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, melons, white peppers and sweet peppers (citró de matançes), a local variety that, once crushed and dried, is used to season many Ibizan dishes and gives sobrasada its characteristic colour. By now, she says, the almonds will have been stored away to create panellets, a traditional sweet made around All Saints’ Day. These nuts, which grow in abundance on Ibiza, are the main ingredient used in the much-loved salsa de nadal, a typical Christmastime sauce.

As we head into autumn, the harvest supplies leafy Swiss chard, used to prepare cucarois, and red Ibizan potatoes used to make the classic dishes bullit de peix (a fish stew) and sofrit pagès (a potato and meat dish). The star leafy green vegetable of the season is Ibizan cabbage, which is rich in calcium and iron. It’s highly sought after to make ossos amb col, a typical winter dish made using pork bones salted during the slaughter in November.

Depending on the rainfall, the next few months will yield broccoli, kale, leeks, spinach, broad beans, peas, artichokes and pumpkins. Sweet potatoes are also highly valued on Ibiza, with families roasting them in their wood-burning ovens throughout the winter. Starting in late October, there will be tasty pomegranates, persimmons, oranges, mandarins and good quantities of lemons to enjoy, too. And don’t forget that from November, the damp, green forests will offer up exquisite pabrasos, a species of typical local mushroom.

The cold of the coming months will see us using up an ample supply of dried figs or xereques. It’s also a good time to bake homemade bread using a local variety of wheat called Blat Xeixa, which is low in gluten and has high nutritional value. This native flour is widely used by Ibizan families to prepare the dough for typical coques (pasties), too.

Llega el otoño y no solo decimos adiós a las altas temperaturas sino que también nos preparamos para una dieta que nos aporte más calorías.

En los campos de Ibiza disponemos de una gran variedad de cultivos a base de productos locales perfectos para nuestra salud. Hemos hablado con Marina Cardona, fundadora y agricultora de la finca ecológica Can Puvil en Sant Josep, para que nos asesore sobre cuáles son los mejores productos de temporada de la isla. Según nos cuenta, ahora es momento de recolectar los últimos tomates, pimientos, calabacines, melones, pimientos blancos y pimientos dulces (citró de matançes), una variedad local que cuando se seca se utiliza como polvo para condimentar muchos platos ibicencos y darle el color rojo tan característico a la sobrasada. Se han recolectado, además, las almendras que podemos guardar para hacer panellets, un dulce tradicional que se elabora durante los días de los Santos Difuntos. Las almendras, tan abundantes en los campo de Ibiza, nos servirán también para preparar la salsa de nadal durante las próximas navidades. Con la entrada del otoño la cosecha nos regalará unas frondosas acelgas que se utilizan para la preparación de los cucarois y patatas rojas ibicencas para hacer el clásico bullit de peix i sofrit pagés. De verduras de hoja verde la estrella para la estación otoñal será la col eivissenca, rica en calcio y hierro. Este cultivo es muy buscado para hacer una receta típica de los meses de invierno: ossos amb col. Se prepara a base de huesos de cerdo salados durante las matanzas del mes de noviembre. Dependiendo de las lluvias tendremos también los siguientes meses: brócoli, col kale, puerros, espinacas, habas, guisantes, alcachofas y calabazas. En Ibiza, además, es muy valorado el moniato, que las familias ibicencas ponen en el horno de leña en invierno.

A partir de finales de octubre podremos disfrutar de las sabrosas granadas, caquis, naranjas, mandarinas y una buena cantidad de limones. Sin olvidar que los verdes y húmedos bosques nos darán, a partir de noviembre, los exquisitos pabrasos, una especie de seta típica de la zona.

Con los meses venideros el frío hará que echemos mano de un buen aprovisionamiento de higos secos o xereques. También preparar pan casero con una variedad local de trigo llamada Blat Xeixa, con bajo contenido en gluten y alto valor nutricional. Esta harina autóctona es muy utilizada por las familias locales para hacer, además del pan, la masa de las coques.

Si queremos saber más podemos acercarnos a conocer Can Puvil y descubrir de primera mano cómo comer del huerto a la mesa. La finca de Marina Cardona distribuye a restaurantes que apuestan por la calidad y por el producto local, ¡sin olvidar al pequeño consumidor! Isabel Castillo studied Spanish philology before embarking on a career as a teacher and devoting herself to studying flowers in all their forms. Today, she grows edible, therapeutic and ornamental flowers as a “way of life”.

Which flowers do you grow?

Most of what I grow are Mediterranean flowers: carnations, geraniums, lavender, mixing in others such as begonias, roses, tagetes, and marigolds with Ibiza’s frigola flower, which I cherish dearly because it’s the basic ingredient in our liquors and an important seasoning in our pastries. Medicinally, it’s the best natural antibiotic there is.

What flowers can we sample in the autumn?

All year round, we have carnations and geraniums. We also have daisies, tagetes, and roses that bloom from spring right through to autumn, so this is harvest season, and then the Provençal lavender re-emerges in early winter.

What do edible flowers add to dishes?

Aside from their colour, they add vitamins, as well as spiciness, sweetness, bitterness and different textures. The earliest Mediterranean civilisations had numerous recipes for elixirs; in Greece and Rome rose liqueurs were highly valued, and the Phoenicians used frigola as a condiment to enhance the flavour of their meals.

La mayor parte del cultivo son flores mediterráneas: claveles, geranios, lavandas, otras como las begonias, las rosas, los tagetes y las caléndulas se entremezclan con la flor de frígola ibicenca que trato con mucho mimo pues es la base de nuestros licores y un aderezo importantísimo en nuestra repostería. Medicinalmente es el mejor antibiótico natural. ¿Qué flores podemos degustar en otoño?

Durante todo el año tenemos claveles y geranios. A estas se suman las margaritas, los tagetes y las rosas, que perviven de primavera a otoño, siendo esta una época de recogimiento donde las lavandas provenzales vuelven a resurgir para dar inicio al invierno. ¿Qué aportan las flores comestibles a los platos?

Aparte de su cromatismo, nos aportan vitaminas, sabores picantes, dulces, amargos y diferentes texturas. En las primeras civilizaciones mediterráneas encontramos numerosas recetas de elixires; en Grecia y Roma se valoraban mucho los licores de rosas, y la frígola para los fenicios formaba parte del condimento que incrementaba el sabor de las comidas.

In October, Ibiza’s first snail farm will start selling two edible species: the local versions of Helix aspersa and bover, the tastiest, according to their breeder, Juanjo Ribas. Each year around 16 million kilos of these molluscs, which the Romans referred to as ‘land oysters’, are consumed in Spain and the idea is to supply them to individuals and companies. Snails are not only a genuine delicacy, they’re also easy to digest, healthy and highly nutritious. La primera granja de caracoles de Ibiza comenzará en octubre a vender sus dos especies: helix aspersa y bover, en sus versiones locales que son, como dice su criador Juanjo Ribas, “más sabrosos”. La idea es abastecer a particulares y empresas de este molusco que ya los romanos denominaban ostras terrestres y del que tan solo en España se consumen unos ¡16 millones de kilos al año! Además de ser un auténtico manjar, los caracoles son un alimento de fácil digestión, sanos y muy nutritivos.

Built in 1936, the arched terrace of Café Vista Alegre is one of the most iconic frontages in Sant Joan. Since its construction, the pretty corner building on the main street has served as a doctor’s residence, a post office and a general store, but it is perhaps best known as the epicentre of the 1960s and 1970s hippy scene in Ibiza.

Used in those decades as a bohemian hangout, a message centre and a home-from-home for Ibiza’s freewheeling flower children, most of whom were living on foreign soil, the walls are steeped in history. Many of the bar’s Ibicenco regulars can recall stories from the days when people came and went barefoot, in jeans and necklaces and scarves tied around their heads. Sant Joan is still at the heart of Ibiza’s alternative community and visitors today will find the interior of

this classic hangout much unchanged.

The décor is simple, with a tiled floor, small wooden tables and walls that are peppered with local art. The outdoor terrace is one of Ibiza’s prettiest, a sunsoaked elevation with vast floral murals and the welcoming shade of a clutch of lemon trees. A cut-out wooden payesa still guards the entrance. Simple as it may look, Vista Alegre is famed for its excellent local cuisine, particularly the traditional lentil dishes and the paella (reserve a day in advance). On Sunday – Sant Joan’s thronging market day – the bar is inundated with locals and tourists alike. Those who arrive early will be rewarded with an outdoor table with the best view of the action.

Order the chachi for breakfast – tomato toast with avocado, cheese and a fried egg – and watch the beautifully bohemian world of the north go by.

Construida en 1936, la terraza con arcos del Café Vista Alegre es una de las fachadas más emblemáticas de Sant Joan. Desde su origen, este bonito edificio en una esquina de la calle principal ha albergado la residencia de un médico, la oficina de Correos y una tienda de ultramarinos, pero quizás se le conozca sobre todo por haber sido el epicentro de la escena hippie en Ibiza durante los años 60 y 70. En esas décadas lo utilizaban los bohemios como un lugar donde pasar el rato e intercambiar mensajes, y se convirtió en una especie de segundo hogar para estos inconformistas que vagaban por Ibiza, de los cuales la gran mayoría eran extranjeros. Estos muros están cargados de historia.

Muchos de los residentes ibicencos que frecuentan el bar recuerdan historias de esos días en los que la gente iba en vaqueros y descalza por la calle con un montón de collares y pañuelos atados a la cabeza.

Sant Joan sigue siendo el centro de la comunidad alternativa en Ibiza, y hoy en día el visitante encontrará que

el interior de este clásico punto de encuentro permanece prácticamente inalterado. La decoración es sencilla, con un suelo de baldosas, pequeñas mesas de madera y paredes llenas de obras de artistas locales. La terraza al aire libre es una de las más bonitas de Ibiza, una explanada soleada con grandes murales de temática floral bajo la acogedora sombra de un montón de limoneros. Una talla de madera con forma de payesa sigue vigilando la entrada. Aunque parezca sencillo, Vista Alegre tiene fama por su excelente cocina local, sobre todo los platos tradicionales de lentejas y la paella (que hay que reservar con un día de antelación). Los domingos –un bullicioso día de mercado en Sant Joan– el bar está desbordado de lugareños y turistas. Si llegas temprano serás recompensado con una mesa al aire libre con la mejor vista de la acción. Pide un desayuno chachi con tostada de aguacate, queso y huevo frito, y quédate a ver pasar el maravilloso mundo bohemio del norte de la isla.

Can Murenu Can Murenu opened in 1920, and some of its dusty curiosities may have remained in situ ever since. An Aladdin’s cave for treasure-seekers, this dinky corner store on Vara de Rey has a decidedly nautical theme, with rope accessories, lots of blue-and-white ceramics and a cache of tiny boats. We love the round wicker baskets – some of Ibiza’s finest – and the turquoise glass fisherman’s floats clad in hand-knotted twine. Muebles Junco y Mimbre A sprawling emporium of all things woven, this long-standing local store is stashed with treasures. Expect to find everything from large pieces of cane furniture down to the most intricate basketwork, including some charming woven animals from Madagascar. The selection of baskets is Ibiza’s best, and the traditional shoes woven from reeds are beautiful. There are also macramé plant holders and a huge range of parasols. Come for the old-school atmosphere and leave with an on-trend camouflage rucksack. In Search of IbiZa’s ZeroPlastic Future

In Spain, 50 per cent of plastic packaging is still being disposed of in landfill sites and cannot be recycled. Here in Ibiza, single-use plastics such as straws, cups and bottles create a vast amount of unsustainable waste that ends up in the sea and on our beaches.

In the last 12 months we’ve seen a positive shift in the attitudes of Ibiza’s nightlife industry, with a number of initiatives kickstarting a new green era for the island’s club culture.

In August of this year, Pacha announced plans to abolish the use of plastic straws in its venues. It’s the first step in a strategy designed to make Pacha plastic-free within four years. “At Pacha, we need to be very thoughtful about what we do to ensure that another generation of clubbers are able to find the same magic in Ibiza as we all did in our formative years,” says brand CEO Nick McCabe.

Elsewhere on the island the message is equally reassuring. Sant Antoni’s O Beach is offering free entry to its Thursday afternoon party, ONE, for anyone who joins its morning beach clean. It is, according to brand director Gemma Charters, “our way of saying thank you for helping us preserve the beauty of an island we all love.”

Straws are clearly a big story - the World Wildlife Fund estimates that we use 42 billion per year, many of which end up in the ocean. Café Mambo had its first completely straw-free weekend last summer and the Mambo Group now uses totally biodegradable straws made from wheat. They’re the same as the ones used by Pikes, which has also fitted water filters in its kitchens and reception area so that hotel guests can refill glass bottles.

La música y la hostelería son las industrias protagonistas del sector turístico ibicenco, y el empresario David Piccioni recuerda que la gente tiene la responsabilidad de proteger el medioambiente.

“En una industria que suele estar obsesionada con el placer personal, está bien recordarle a la gente que existe el bien común”, dice.

En las colinas cerca de San Antonio, los promotores de fiestas The Zoo Project trabajan con The Nature Project, una organización sin ánimo de lucro que conciencia a la gente sobre temas que afectan al mar, como el abandono de redes de arrastre o el fondeo de embarcaciones en zonas protegidas de praderas de posidonia.

Pippi and Joan Ribas are the kind of major names Ibiza’s music scene is proud to shout about. Nativ’s director, Massimo Shadi Saab, caught up with them at Café Mar y Sol after the amazing back-toback session they gave us at the launch party for the second edition of Nativ magazine.

Pippi y Joan Ribas son, en mayúsculas, leyendas, de esas de las que puede con orgullo jactarse la escena de la industria de la música de Ibiza. Nuestro director, Massimo Shadi Saab, conversa con ellos en el Café Mar y Sol tras la maravilla de sesión back to back con la que nos deleitaron en la fiesta de lanzamiento del segundo número de nuestra revista Nativ.

Massimo: One of the highlights of the summer – seeing you together in the DJ booth again!

Pippi: It’s been very rewarding and touching to play together again.

Joan Ribas: It’s been years, it’s true.

Certainly not during the four years I’ve been working as a member of Ibiza’s city council.

Massimo: You must have wonderful memories of the sessions you’ve shared.

Pippi: At the time, there was no pressure and we could be free playing music. It was an unforgettable and very fun time.

Joan Ribas: The first time we DJ’d together was over 30 years ago.

There are millions of memories, but the best part of it is the way we tend to be in sync. At your party, Massimo, even though it had been such a long time since we played together, we realised it worked as well as ever, nothing had changed.

Massimo: What would you say is the best of each of you behind the decks?

Pippi: Joan always has something to convey and offers everything he can and more.

Joan Ribas: The best thing about Pippi is that he’s the best. Full stop. For me, it’s always been an honour and a pleasure not just to listen to him, but to learn from him.

Massimo: What are your shortterm plans?

Pippi: My most immediate plan is

something I do every year that’s organised by the Music for Dreams label, where we gather musicians and producers from all over the world together at a camp in the middle of nowhere near Copenhagen.

Joan Ribas: I’m still focusing on my current projects: my residence at Flower Power, which will continue at Pacha Hotel starting October 1, and my shows on Formentera Radio and Radio Illa Formentera.

Massimo: What’s the best thing about October in Ibiza?

Pippi: The best thing is that we recover that tranquillity that we so love.

Joan Ribas: Exactly. The calm after the storm. Having time to meet up with friends again.

Massimo: October is a great month!

Pippi: Joan siempre transmite y ofrece todo lo que puede y más.

Joan Ribas: Lo mejor de Pippi es que es el mejor. Sin más. Para mi siempre ha sido un honor y un placer no sólo escucharle sino aprender de él.

Massimo: ¿Qué proyectos tenéis a corto plazo?

Pippi: Mi proyecto más inmediato es mi plan anual organizado por la discográfica Music for Dreams donde nos juntamos músicos y productores de todo el mundo en un campamento en medio de la nada de Copenhague.

Joan Ribas: Yo todavía estoy centrado en mis proyectos presentes: mi residencia en Flower Power que continuará en el Hotel Pachá a partir del 1 de octubre y mis programas en Formentera Radio y en Radio Illa Formentera.

Massimo: ¿Qué es lo mejor de octubre en Ibiza?

Pippi: Lo mejor es que la isla recupera esa paz que tanto nos gusta…

Launch night at the oasis NOCHE DE LANZAMIENTO EN EL OASIS

Atzaró’s enchanting gardens formed the backdrop as the pages of Nativ magazine came to life at the party to celebrate its inspirational second issue.

Los encantadores jardines de Atzaró formaron el telón de fondo perfecto para que las páginas de la revista Nativ cobraran vida durante la fiesta de celebración de su segundo número inspiracional.

A principios de agosto, en el oasis del agroturismo Atzaró, la isla entera salió a celebrar el lanzamiento del segundo número de la revista Nativ, la edición Inspiración. Los invitados fueron obsequiados con una copa de Orangecello, el licor insigne de Atzaró, maridado con los sonidos oníricos de la saxofonista Georgina Withers, que creó el ambiente perfecto con sus pistas de Café del Mar. Todas las miradas estaban puestas en los jardines de Atzaró y su estanque de flores de loto, mientras los invitados se detenían a hacerse una foto tras el photocall. Esta imagen resaltaba los nombres de los patrocinadores y beneficiarios de Nativ, entre ellos, Can Hog, la organización caritativa elegida para este evento. Los invitados recaudaron la impresionante suma de 1.100 euros para ayudar a salvar a los erizos autóctonos ibicencos.

Nativ simuló un pueblo artesano donde estaban la marca de ropa ética y ecológica Etikology, que compartió los secretos de sus técnicas eco-friendly, y la Asociación El Retorn, que presentó una selección de artesanía tradicional ibicenca. Los invitados se congregaron entorno a la terraza mientras DJ Dribbler inauguraba la velada con un ecléctico sonido balear. Luego, Ibossim, el dúo flamenco residente de Atzaró, se subió al escenario. A lo largo de la velada, los distintos contenidos de la revista empezaron a cobrar vida cuando DJ Mina nos ofreció su cálida y conmovedora música sanadora. Trace Harris y su tribu de 17 artistas, Ibango Tribe, se subieron al escenario antes del atardecer con un teclado y dos tambores japoneses gigantes.

Se desató el frenesí, que solo volvió a la calma cuando los DJs Boogaloo de Café Malanga volvieron a su distintiva mezcla de funk, soul y afro-beat. El público pasó el resto de la noche bailando, y cuando los míticos DJs Pippi y Joan Ribas tomaron el timón, la fiesta de lanzamiento de Nativ ya era imparable.

Early August in Atzaró’s oasis-like spa resort, and the island was out in force celebrating the launch of issue two of Nativ magazine – the Inspiration Edition. Guests were greeted with Atzaró’s signature Orangecello liqueur, paired with the dreamy sound of saxophonist Georgina Withers, whose Café del Mar tracks set the scene beautifully.

All eyes were on Atzaró’s enchanting gardens and lotus flower ponds as guests paused to be snapped against Nativ’s photocall backdrop. The backdrop highlighted the names of Nativ’s sponsors and beneficiaries, including Can Hog, which was the event’s chosen charity. Guests raised an incredible 1,100 euros to help save the indigenous hedgehogs of Ibiza.

Nativ’s artisan village showcased ethical and eco-friendly clothing brand Etikology, which shared the secrets of its organic techniques, and the El Retorn Association, which presented a variety of traditional Ibicencan crafts.

As guests gathered near the terrace, DJ Dribbler opened the evening with his eclectic Balearic sounds. Later, Atzaró’s in-house flamenco duo Ibossim took to the stage with their upbeat blend of traditional music. As the evening progressed, different elements of the magazine were brought to life, with music healer DJ Mina supplying her warm, soulful sounds.

Sunset was heralded by Trace Harris and his 17-strong Ibango Tribe, who took to the stage with a keyboard and two giant Japanese drums. A tribal frenzy ensued, broken only when the Boogaloo DJs from Malanga Café deviated into their signature blend of funk, soul and afro-beat. A joyous audience danced through the rest of the evening, and by the time DJ legends Pippi and Joan Ribas took the helm, Nativ’s launch party was unstoppable.
