An office space for an up and coming hair colour brand, Birds of Paradyes, Wave 312 is a project that relies heavily on the concept of insertion

The space includes a compact pantry area along with a Sculptural table to house the utilities.

The unit is designed to house a refrigerator, microwave, coffee machine, and storage area.

Once inside the office, the visitor steps into retail/ waiting area. Keeping the colour palette neutral was a conscious decision to highlight the products of the brand.

The spatial layout was designed in a way to provide maximum layers. A visitor standing in the neutral colour schemed retail/waiting area can get a sneak peak into the warm and bright toned pantry unit. The arches act as space demarcating elements while also exaggerating the corridors/passages.

Image showing the pre-fabricated modules There were many challenges on the site, main one being bringing the modules to the third floor as they were bigger than all the thresholds provided. We brought the modules manually from the facade of the building to the extended balcony area of the site.. It took six men and lots of coordination to bring the modules to the site

Stages of the projects

As the site was a rented office, I designed the furniture which can be pre-fabricated and assembled together on the site. This provided us time and space to simultaneously fix the electric and plumbing utilities on site

The project had to be completed within 2 months from design to execution and hence pre-planning the stages and managing agencies was one of the most challenging aspect to reach the final stage

The tender drawings were created using Sketchup Layout to visually convey dimensions as well as materiality for pre-fabrication and carpentry work

Work Desks and Utility Modules The workspace is multi-functional. The open floor plan comes in handy to achieve that. The colours in the workspace start from violet tones and gradually change into blue tones.

Image viewing the Cabin Unit The cabin is the only closed space in the open plan office. The wall is used with a Gradient that transitions from the orange-red zone to purple-violet zone and becomes an interactive element in the space.

Entrance Door Details

The door was designed to visually gain the most attraction and create curiousty as to what lies behind it in the space with custom door handle details

The two-layered entrance door is designed to be a pleasant first interaction with the user. It exaggerates the polarity and subtly represents the whimsical space one is about to experience.

Work Desk and Studio Unit Modules The studio unit is designed to be a comfortable casual seating space while the workspace is bit for formal. However, the placement and layout of the furniture elements allow maximum interaction between both kinds.

Conceptual Process and Furniture Design

Image view from the Pantry Area An informal cabin is the only enclosed space in the office. The colour on one of the walls helps tie it in with the outer brighter colour spaces (like the pantry). The cabin door has an exaggerated wooden curve handle and fluted glass for play for colours and materials.

Modules, though designed as isolated furniture pieces, they work primarily when context of other modules is added. Design is not a linear process, it evolves as per factors involved. This illustration is a recollection of decisions taken which served the design intent and client brief appropriately. The wooden vertical shelves were designed to solve any human error, of the pre-fabricated module, on the site

The geometry and form of mass is designed in an orthogonal geometry in XYZ direction. To achieve the spatial theme of the project the mass is propagated to achieve linear spatial character according to the site context.

The propagation allows iteration of spaces which creates different volumetric spaces and connections. The spaces designed are repeated in the space along with geometry achieved by standardized kit of parts, which can variate according to the changes on site.

Comparing the basic elements of design with basic elements of threshold

These digital collages were a way of portraying what distorting the thresholds can create. Would the thresholds on site still function if put in different XYZ planes? I worked on with digital collage to answer these questions where the door is on the floor, and a staircase leads to a window, or a space created with inverted bollards.

Physically experimenting the use of horizontal planes with the help of Laura, Tala, and Rebal I began to explore the idea of using just the horizontal surface to function with the help of my batchmates to physically execute it. Using the university tables provided me an orthogonal horizontal surface which I can propagate further into a sculpture. With this I achieved numerous postures and situations while also understand uncomfortable situations and dimensions.

A threshold like staircase, comprised of horizontal surfaces leads us to different levels. Can just these horizontal surfaces create an inhabitable space? We use the horizontal surface to step on, as a cover, stand on, sit on, sleep on and in many more ways.

Card Paper modeling to explore forms for ambiguious thresholds To further this investigation, I worked with paper models where the liminal spaces created situations and even more ambiguity. I worked with a rule of using a 150 x 150 mm size of paper along with whatever paper can do like cutting, folding, bending. These models are a way of exploring the in-between spaces.

The strip light were attached from the outer edges of the acrylic model which gives the effect at the central cuts we see here

The model was made with pre-planning all the stages and laser cuting the pieces.

The side pieces were curved using a hot gun and hence the circumference and lengths were measured before cutting.

Material quantity was studied after researching the market prices.

The set of drawings helped in making of each member at the wood workshop smoothly. Secondly, additions were made to modify the table. Grooves were added in the top most elements for them to flush together, giving a better hold by stopping movement in x-axis. Also, addition of dowels prevented movement in the y-axis. Rivets were used for the foldability of table.

Course: Construction Technology

The work seen was done for the Construction Technology Courses ( I - IV) during the early academic semesters. The idea for making the brick

wall was to learn working with materials and understanding the properties. The brick patterns were studied and designed in the studio including working of different brick bonds, brick types, and construction processes. Student visited IIM Ahmedabad for case study to understand fly ash

The next project shows 1:5 scale model of the vernacular architecture of North India. This architecture type is known as KathKhuni Architecture, the method includes layers of local materials like wooden logs and stone. These walls also becomes a great insulation resisting the cold weather.

Views showing Brick Walls constructed by the students Prototypes in 1:5 scale were made before finalising the wall. We triangulated the soil and dug to make the foundation. The bricks were later rendered with brick bats.

1:5 model of Kathkhuni Architecture Residence Space The model was made to understand the construction methods of kathkhuni architecture. The model was made in a group of 3 students with wood and paper mache for depiction of hand chiseled stones.

The bamboo was cut, added to the outlines ground over which cow dung was applied.

CEPT Garba 2019 Visual Identity is designed for the festival of 9 nights. The digital illustrations were conceptualised to express and celebrate the

essence of Navaratri. The nine nights are signified by the number of the night. To add the context in the design, there numbers were illustrated

in Gujarati language. The lines forming the numbers take inspiration from the organic dance of garba and how one feels the state of trans while dancing throughout the night. The human figures shown are dancing garba in a flow. Thorough understanding of the nine nights, and the nine goddess tales lead to the importance of the colour palette that followed. Every year the nine nights are predicted with one colour which is meaning good for one to wear. The colour palette follows the prediction of these lucky or ‘shubh’ colours.

Diary Design* Merchandise Design including diaries and stole scarfs* The design was further taken into various merchandise outcomes. According to the print method of screen printing on scarfs and diaries, the design were customised. These diaries were hand made by local craftsmen.

Using cartridge paper the diaries were hand stitched.

Understanding our field, campus, and love for diaries, these small sized hand made diaries were important part of the merch, designed for ones to carry it easily

30 ft Banner The 30 feet banner was designed to sit on the north face of CEPT Library which looks directly upon the Shrenikbhai Plaza. The nine nights are celebrated in this center area of campus

The two interlocked forms, in an abstract manner, shows the dual nature of academic and nonacademic learning coming together in one place at Maker Bhavan. Following the typeface and composition of the Maker Bhavan logo, there are 3 main visuals : the Logo, Maker Bhavan and IIT Gandhinagar. The strong philosophy aimed for the space helped create the visual aspects of it. The logo is an amalgamation of the initials of Maker Bhavan which is exaggerated using the colour palette. The colours were designed to not represent the mechanical aspects of the field but to give it richness and formality. The identity was an outcome of intensive iterations of forms to showcase the nature as well initials of Maker Bhavan.

The logo was designed in 4 different colour palette which can be used depending upon the kind of events hosted in the space

Logo Construction The logo was iterated but subtle fillets to add softness and formality to the visuals. This helped balance it with and reduce the mechanical aspects

A thorough brand manual was designed for the visual identity. It explained the static and non-static aspects for ever changing staff at IIT Gandhinagar

The logo was taken further and deconstructed into brand patterns. These became the secondary language used to design the merchandising and poster designs

Book Cover Design In a set of 4, the book covers were designed for a square print derived from the form of the logo. The brand patterns helped take the designs further in a subtle manner
