SILAK Media advocates for digital journalism thru WriteWorks 2023 by RODEL PACIT

WITH THE cause of shaping the future of campus journalism in the digital age, SILAK Media has partnered with Junior Chamber International (JCI) Regatta - Iloilo in the conduct of WriteWorks 2023, a journalism and creative writing workshop held on April 15-16, 2023 at the Gabaldon Hall of Iloilo National High School (INHS). More than 200 learners from private and public schools all over the province and city of Iloilo attended the workshop, which included lectures on the different journalism and creative writing categories, as well as plenary sessions discussing the event’s theme, “Shaping the Future of Campus Journalism in the Digital Age.” “Technology is very powerful and important nowadays to us because it changes the landscape of journalism through information dissemination and social interaction,” said Joseph Bernard Marzan, a senior reporter of The Daily Guardian, who spoke about the importance of technology in journalism.

Some of the resource speakers were accomplished journalists, writers, and trainers: Dr. Hazel Villa, adviser of SILAK Media and Visayas correspondent of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, spoke about news and editorial writing; Kimberly Rose Pillo, an award-winning former editor-in-chief of SILAK and a Filipino teacher at INHS, discussed feature writing; and Mariel Terre, SILAK’s former associate editor, a published poet and an English teacher at Tigbauan National High School, talked about poetry writing. Additionally, Mark Angelo C. Fuertes, SILAK associate editor from 2012 to 2013 and an English teacher at the WVSU - Integrated Laboratory School, discussed

about copyreading and headlining, and John Frederic Bugayong, former illustrator and literary editor of SILAK and currently a science instructor at St. Paul University Iloilo, for editorial cartooning. “This workshop expands our knowledge on journalism and how to write it, which enables us to be the voice of others through writing,” said Alexa Jaci Bataan, a participant from the Angelicum School Iloilo as she shared her experience during the workshop. Blessed Bea Plondaya, external vice president and project chairman of WriteWorks 2023 added that they will partner again with SILAK to conduct the same workshop next year.
