Urban Park Ferrara The labratory focuses on restructuring Ferrara’s urban area west of the railway line, between the eastern walls and recent expansions along Via Modena and Via Padova, including ex-industrial zones near the Boicelli canal. This crucial area, home to the Bologna-Venice station and major roadways, holds potential for transformation. However, the railway divide, underutilized spaces, and heavy traffic lead to urban fragmentation and marginalization. Addressing the degradation of the “skyscraper” and its surroundings is a key concern.

The isolation of new settlements and unresolved east/west relations in the unused railway strip also pose challenges.

1. Wet land resulting from the underground aquifers after the demolition of the abandoned residences.

It is now a phyto-depuration system that clears water coming from Boicelli canal.

2. River banks with clean water along Boicelli and Burana canals that are accessible for various activities and easily reachable via cycle-pedestrian paths along the waterfront.

The focus is located on the eastern part of the site, in the area between the commerical area along

via Moderna and the new university facilities near the station. Previously, it was occupied by an abandoned industrial site but now it is meant to be part of a well equipped area: in particular, there will be 2 new buildings used as student residences and guesthouse, and also a new open public area will be the new main entrance to the big urban park. Residences are near green public spaces, a skatepark, the university and the station in order to host activities for students but also to the public in general.

The focus is located on the eastern part of the site, in the area between the new students residences,

the train station and the improved transportation hub. Previously, it was just a back, unused even if it was meant to be a focal point for transports: for this reason, now it should become a new university providede services for students and the public in general, such as cafes, library, sport centre, study rooms. The new building defines a system of equipped green public spaces, accessible by everyone who comes from the station, Via Moderna and the public park.

Parametric Form and Facade Design The role of performative computational architecture is to provide an interdisciplinary approach to maximize the advantages and minimize the disadvantages of buildings starting from the conceptual design phase. Therefore, the project focuses on the conceptual design phase with form generation, performance evaluation and optimization phases using Grasshopper.

Design Approach

Concept Mass designed a conical form to maximize floor space and offer a view in all directions. A consequence with this choice of design is that the skin is open to all directions. Each unit of the facade moves and changes angle depending on the incoming sunlight.

The project aims to maximize human comfort and provide a sustainable skin system.

By examining the total sun hours for 4 seasons and a one-year period, optimized options were created with changes in shape and position.

While maximum values were evaluated in order to receive more sunlight in the winter months, minimum values were evaluated in order to receive the least amount of sunlight in the summer months.

Rebirth of Green Currently there are refurbishments, large-scale housing and commercial investment projects pending completion in Alsancak, Limanarkası which are expected to result in drastic change in the morphology and functions in the area. The project explores the conditions of inhabiting architectural space and of develops design solutions. The aim of the design is to envision and design not only a place to shelter, but also a new way of living together that enables and encourages interaction with nature.

1980

Alsancak's urbanization was shaped by low-rise residences featuring traditional architecture. People lived in low-rise buildings that harmonized with nature, and the urbanization process was progressing slowly.

Urbanization gained momentum, witnessing a surge in high-rise buildings. Rapid population growth and economic shifts led to a preference for apartment living, pushing individuals further away from natural surroundings and into the bustling chaos of urban life.

2020

Future

The increase in high-rise buildings as a result of industrialization and migration waves has completely severed people's ties with the natural environment. With Covid sweeping the world, the importance of open and green spaces was remembered again.

Lifestyle in touch with nature.

On the vertical axis: the large mass serves accommodation, and the small mass connected to it serves supporting functions.

A vertical green corridor was created at the intersection where both masses are connected to each other, and gardens were created on top. On the horizontal axis: the ground level serves arts and sports functions, the upper levels are privatized.
