Be involved...VOTE, VOTE, VOTE! August 6, 2013 Dear Sikeston citizens, On Tuesday, August 6, we have the opportunity of “Protecting Sikeston’s Future” by voting YES to the continuation of the 1-cent sales tax established in 2004. Just look at what is happening in our town! Our Technology / Industrial Park is filling up…Orgill…Federal Express Ground…Do It Best Distribution Center. We have a flourishing YMCA. Alan Wire has expanded. Colton’s Restaurant and Holiday Inn Express…the Downtown revitalization… and a Public Library Expansion are a part of our future. OUR SIKESTON IS GROWING AND IMPROVING! The 1-cent sales tax plays a vital role in our city’s economic growth. Without the 1-cent Sales Tax, the following improvements would not have been possible: Over 2.25 million dollars has gone towards the Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority (LCRA) for revitalization of blighted neighborhoods in Sikeston. Over $500,000 has supported the LCRA Youth and Mentoring Program to assist underprivileged and at-risk citizens. The first DPS Narcotics Unit has been established with four veteran investigators. This special unit has allowed the DPS to take a strong initiative on drug crime in our community, and a proactive stand continues to help make great headway in the war on drugs. DPS officers now have body armor that provides crucial protection in the line of duty. A city-wide camera system is now in place to help the DPS investigate criminal activity. This significant technology has been used many times to support serious criminal investigations. A city-wide warning siren system has been purchased to replace an outdated one. This new system notifies citizens to prepare for natural or man-made disasters. Homeowners and businesses have seen an insurance reduction because the Sikeston Fire Department has trained and acquired equipment to drop its ISO (Insurance Service Offer) from 6 to 4. SEMO-Sikeston offers dual credit courses to all area high school students. More than 11,000 square feet has been added to SEMO-Sikeston for its growing campus (4 new classrooms, computer lab, biology lab, and child development lab). Reduced tuition rates for 000-299 courses are now available at SEMO-Sikeston. SEMO-Sikeston offers A+ Scholarships to A+ students attending Sikeston High. Partnering with Missouri Southern State, SEMO-Sikeston now offers a dental hygiene associate degree. Agricultural students take advantage of their own agricultural lab at SEMO-Sikeston. As of 2013, agricultural students utilize an outdoor lab with both drip and above-ground irrigation for the production and experimentation of row crops and vegetable crops. In May, 2013, 22 students graduated from the university by completing all, or almost all, of their courses at SEMO-Sikeston. We need to keep our city safe, offer educational opportunities to people of all ages, and increase economic development. “Protecting Sikeston’s Future” paves the way for our city to move forward. Please vote YES for the continuation of the 1-cent sales tax on Tuesday, August 6! Sincerely, Sally Mitchell Lape, Chairperson for Protecting Sikeston’s Future Future
