Bringing people together through cows

What better way to celebrate 75 years in the industry than by bringing together the very things that make it all worthwhile – the cows and the people?

The essence of this gathering is to take a moment to honour our journey, and the people we’ve been lucky enough to share it with.

Cows have been our life; they have taken us around the world, we’ve met so many wonderful people and made lifelong friends through our intense love of registered animals. Not least among those connections was Dad’s enduring friendship with Queen Elizabeth II. During his entire dairying career, Dad visited the Queen’s herd 11 times, and he used to speak with her once a month on the phone.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The bloodlines in this catalogue have been carefully curated by our family over several generations, and we have steadfastly held to our conscious intent to breed modern dairy cows that look good while they fill the bucket. Choosing the sale animals for this celebration sale has been like choosing a show team.

We have started it off with one of the very best we can offer. Ferdon Victorious Flower VG87 goes back to Dad’s very first Champion cow, Glenmore Sweet Choice. Flower’s sixth dam was one of Dad’s alltime favourite cows – from one of his main families – Ferdon Tandras Flower. Tandras Flower won Champion Cow at the Waikato Show three successive times.

We could have easily loaded Victorious Flower up for the NZDE. She was in the yard, we considered it, and some prefer her to our NZDE Intermediate Champion, Ferdon Victorious Shirlee VG87.

The two of them finished one-two in the Semex On-Farm (Waikato) competition. We believe both young cows are set to have huge futures, and we will let you decide which one is best. Shirlee sells at lot 5.

MORE THAN ONE BREED

We will also offer some Holsteins and Ayrshires in a nod to our respect and enjoyment of all good cows – regardless of breed. This will be a sale of yesteryear in some ways because our herd will also be on display.

We are thrilled to share this day by including some offerings from our good friends at Waipiri Holsteins. Dad and Bill Fullerton were fast friends, groomsmen for each other, and more than once – across three generations – our families have travelled to shows together. David and I were best men for each other, we’ve shared the ring at IDW, and it is an enduring connection we feel lucky to have.

On a personal note, I do want to pause and give special credit to Michelle, who has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with me on a journey that has become as close to her heart as it is to mine. Not every day in farming is great, and these special days remind us all why we do it.

is indeed my privilege to be Auctioneer for the Ferdon ’75 year celebration sale’

What an amazing catalogue of the very best in Jerseys, Ayrshires and Holsteins to be offered.

The name Ferdon is synonymous with ‘Quality’. Yes, the Ferdon bloodline has exceled all over the Jersey World.

We are all aware of the incredible achievements the Ferguson family has received in New Zealand over the past 75 years, but let’s take a little time to reflect on the many major Grand Champions Ferdon Jerseys have won for others throughout the United Kingdom for the famous Windsor herd and indeed many others. If we look at so many of the great Jerseys in that part of the world today we sure do find Ferdon in their backgrounds.

I think about Ferdon Glens Constance , a former Melbourne Royal in-milk Junior Champion who went on to breed offspring to win the Great Southern Grand Champion in Australia and then breed the leading AI Sire – Aussiegold-P who has sired many daughters to classify EX both in Australia, NZ and indeed recently in the USA.

I then think of Ferdon Vins Sandra who won Grand Champion at Melbourne Royal and her female offspring then bred so many leading AI Sires in Australia including the celebrated Raceway. Let’s not forget the two-time IDW Grand Champion Bushlea Brook Maybell, EX 94, her dam by son of the many time champion Ferdon Tandras Flower. Yes, the Ferdon bloodline is one that has truly bred on right around the World!

I have been visiting Ferdon since 1987. That day seeing Ferdon Harvest Elva, who I still consider one of the very best Jerseys I have ever seen anywhere in the world! However, my greatest day at Ferdon was a few weeks prior to the NZ Dairy Event 2023 when inspecting the show team with my late father in-law, Maurice Carter, who was Don’s lifelong friend. I’m not sure I have walked through a better paddock of Jersey cows – simply incredible! Most of those great cows are indeed represented in this catalogue.

I congratulate the Ferguson family on their 75 years, and thank them for their incredible contribution to the betterment of the registered dairy cow.

A RIGHT ROYAL VISIT

THE DAY THE QUEEN CAME TO FERDON

It all happened in the front paddock at Ferdon on February 4, 1990.

The story that has been told and re-told – because it is the day the UK’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II – visited Ferdon.

It also represented a celebration of Don’s years of hard work with the cows of Ferdon, and it was an event he shared with his family and the community.

Don’s connection with the Queen started in 1975, when he and June travelled to the English Royal Show at Stoneleigh Park near Kenilworth, where the Queen's cows were exhibited. Don wasn’t that impressed by the royal herd, and told her somewhatstartled herdsman as much, showing him photographs of the Ferdon Genetics’ Jerseys at home in New Zealand.

Don first met Her Majesty in person in 1977, in the lounge of the Te Rapa Racecourse at Hamilton on the North Island. When Queen Elizabeth returned to New Zealand in 1990 for the Commonwealth Games, she asked to visit the Ferguson family’s farm.

On that historic day, family and friends lined the road to Ferdon to welcome her. After the official welcome, Her Majesty and Don wandered a freshly mowed paddock viewing Ferdon’s grazing herd.

Ferdon Tandras Eve drew the Queen’s eye that day, and her full sister, Ferdon Tandras Elizabeth, would later be exported and included in the Windsor herd.

A garden party was held for family and friends while Her Majesty, Don and June, the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, and Warren and Michelle enjoyed a cup of tea in the front room, which included a spread of pikelets, blueberry tarts, asparagus rolls and Bell tea.

The Queen’s presence is remembered as gracious and warm –and she left a lasting impression, not simply as a Monarch, but as a new friend who appreciated the values and traditions of Ferdon’s cows and of the Ferguson family.

This day remains one of Don and June’s proudest days on-farm. In 1992, Don and June spent four months living in a flat at Windsor Castle, when Don took on a brief term as the Queen's herdsman.

Don’s friendship with the Queen lasted until his passing in 2017, and the Queen then extended her friendship to Warren until her own passing in 2022.

This story will continue to be recounted with great fondness amongst the Ferguson family for generations to come.

Because it was the day that Royalty stepped into their lives.

The following special conditions apply to this sale where applicable:

FEMALE GUARANTEES:

1 Every female shown as bred on a certain date, except any which may have been served within six weeks of sale, is guaranteed in-calf This guarantee expires 28 days from the sale date.

2 Where a sale catalogue specifies a calving date and the resultant calf is not acceptable for registration by the MINDA service of the Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) or by the relevant Breed Society because the calf is born eleven days or more either side of the specified calving date and the paternity is not able to be verified the seller shall refund 25% of the purchase price plus GST direct to the buyer.

3. This clause 2 does not apply if the sale catalogue states that a bull was pastured after AB ceased.

4 Where a veterinary certificate is supplied at the date of sale certifying the female as being in-calf, no further liability will fall on the seller subject to liability under the other clauses contained in the Conditions of Sale The buyer has the right to retest at their own expense before delivery is made from the place of sale Where a female is offered for sale as being in-calf, without a supporting veterinary certificate and the female is subsequently proved to be empty, the buyer has the right to return the female or carry out such disposal as the seller may instruct and the seller will refund direct to the buyer the purchase price plus the return transport costs.

5 Cows sold as not in-calf at the time of sale, shall be sold with a guarantee to breed The term breed shall constitute producing a calf, dead or alive. Should the cow fail to produce a calf by the 31 December 2025, the seller shall refund in full the purchase price direct to the buyer.

6 Yearling heifers sold as unmated are sold with the guarantee to breed The term breed shall constitute producing a calf, dead or alive. Should the heifer fail to produce a calf by the 31 December 2025, the seller shall refund in full the purchase price direct to the buyer.

7. Where females are sold as not in calf, (including yearlings and calves), are flushed for embryo transfer, either with or without success, all guarantees to breed become null and void.

8 Where any female sold as being in-calf proves to be carrying a mummified calf, no liability will fall on the seller.

9. Any animal which is sold as in-calf but subsequently aborts the foetus after delivery is the responsibility of the buyer and no liability will fall on the seller.

10. Any claim to the auctioneers must be accompanied by a veterinary certificate.

GENERAL CONDITIONS:

DELIVERY: Each lot shall, immediately on the fall of the hammer, be at the risk of the buyer.

INSURANCE: If transit or annual insurance is required, such cover can be arranged through the auctioneers.
