What a catalogue of the ‘World Finest Jersey Maternal Lines’, yes this catalogue is full of simply incredible Jerseys. Jersey Breeders from Western Australia, Tasmania, NSW and all over Victoria have consigned females bred from Famous Cow Families from throughout the World.

Selling will be young cows classified to Max score EX 91 as 3 year old and Max score of 88 at 2 years, Lots selling with BPI over +360, Winners from the recent Gippsland Fair, daughters of cows to EX 94, daughters of Great Southern Winners, dams with production to over 12,000 litres and 980 kgs solids and even the ‘Pick of a whole herd’ I congratulate the organising committee on staging such an important event and look forward to your company at Kings Ville, but remember if you can’t be with us the sale will be livestreamed on elite.

WHY JERSEY? SUPERIOR HEAT TOLERANCE

With climate change altering the way all businesses operate, JERSEY breeders continue to report the natural advantages the JERSEY cow maintains over other breeds in managing heat events and maintaining production levels.

LESS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT According to a 2012 life-cycle assessment published in the Journal of Dairy Science, a Jersey cow has a 20% reduction in total carbon footprint achieved through a 32% less water and 11% less land requirement.

WHY JERSEY? Because Jersey milk allows processors to produce 25% more cheese and 30% more butter per litre of milk whilst reducing the environmental impact of their products.

WHY JERSEY? With Dairy BIO / DEDJTR research identifying defined heat events of at least 150 days per annum in the cooler southern states of Australia, the JERSEY cow is best equipped to handle the tough Australian climate.

SUPERIOR FEED CONVERSON

Higher production figures don’t always mean more profitable cows.

On average JERSEY cows are producing 452kg of milk solids per annum (NHIA 2017) equating to approximately 1kg of milk solids per kg of liveweight.

This ratio is 10-12% higher than other breeds.

Lower maintenance costs and higher production per hectare, through superior stocking rates, sees JERSEY breeders producing more kg of solids per hectare.

This again increases the profitable nature of milking JERSEY’s.

The Grainger and Goddard review showed in 8 out of 11 global studies JERSEY cows were averaging 6.2% higher feed conversion efficiency over other breeds.

WHY JERSEY? Because you can’t afford to waste your $$ on feed

SUPERIOR FERTILITY

The superior fertility performance of the Jersey cow in comparison to other breeds is clearly demonstrated by outcomes of the Dairy Australia InCalf Fertility Project 2011.

The study involving 63,000 lactations across 74 herds showed a 30% increase in JERSEY cows in calf after six week of mating from sires with a BPI of 200 in comparison to holsteins.

Selecting high BPI JERSEY bulls combined with a high daughter fertility ABV provide significant advantages to dairy farmers in ensuring more cows in calf when you need them to be.

WHY JERSEY? More cows in calf earlier in the mating season year in year provides significant financial benefit to farmers with lower AI costs, reduced calving intervals and more milk in the vat!

Once every so often a cow comes along that is just meant to be special.

Noelene was one of those cows. She was a cow that didn’t seek attention but loved to be worked with. Every element of showing from the moment she loaded on the truck to when the ribbons were sashed she was a dream, and she knew it.

is the sire of Big Hollow Magic Omen (Lot A); and also through a double granddaughter, Glenmore Golden Folly, who is the dam of Big Hollow Folly’s Sultan, Lot B. The Sameen blood came initially through her son Big Hollow Dreaming Major, but in later years, when Beledene added Lamorna Roz Duke to the mix, the Sameen blood came through another son, Big Hollow Blue Sam, via Lamorna Blue Dream. These bloodlines were then further intensified with the bulls, Grandee, Duke’s Lord and Revel’s Grant.

“ his farm was purchased in 1927, when Dad had the stud pigs. He had about 10 – 12 breeding sows, Berkshire initially, and then he also added some Tamworths in later years. Donald was more involved with the pigs than I was.

Dad milked a grade herd of Jerseys and thought if you were going to milk good cows you may as well milk stud ones, so that’s when we started in the registered game in 1949. Our first choice for a prefix was Belmont (because we had Belmont pigs), but that name had already been taken. So Beledene, which actually was our third choice, was the one that came to be.”

There was a tremendous concentration of the blood of Dunlavin Excellency (pg 8) in the early breeding programme at Beledene and also the blood of the great cow, Kevilor Sameen (pg 8) The Excellency blood was mainly through his double grandson, Glenmore Attainment, who

In 2008 we made a decision to downsize the herd, so we sold all the milking members of the Jane family and they went around the country and I think 3 or 4 animals from that sale ended up topping the herds they went in to.

The Dunlavin Excellency blood was also very dominant in the Beledene foundation females, particularly Marie, Sylvia and Irene. Pines Merry Peggy and Pinewoods Merry Irene were two of the best of the early cows that Beledene purchased along with Pines Royal Marie. Peggy and Irene were both sired by Merriland Concentration and a 3rd daughter was Beledene Royal Pet, the calf that Marie was carrying when they bought her. Concentration could have been a great bull – unfortunately he was killed at an early age when he was electrocuted by power lines in a Taranaki storm. He had a very intense pedigree.

In 2014, we went a step further.

We held a Penultimate Dispersal and sold all of our incalf animals except Southwind Jules Qantas and the three full ET sisters,

We had purchased about 50 Ayrshires the season before from Ward Russell who had the Strathmore stud. They were beautiful looking cows but had not been herd-tested and were on winter milk supply, so most of them had butterfat %’s in the 2.0 – 3.0 range. Southwind wasn’t our first choice prefix. That was Kinross but a guy called Ian McFadgen from Tauranga already had Kinross. In the meantime Hilary had just read a novel about a holiday camp in America and it was called Southwind. That seemed appropriate for this farm as 85% of the terrain is very exposed to those cold south winds.

They can be really hard on the cows, especially at this altitude of 1500 feet. There are only two farms between us and the mountain.

The farm is 59 hectares and we topdress 49 of them the truck driver told me. The most we ever milked was 132 cows, but we couldn’t make any supplements, so generally we milked about 105 cows. These last few years we’ve only milked 80.

An hour in the cowshed is long enough for me nowadays. We don’t have in-shed feeding, no PKE, no urea, just lime. We

But this year everything is going. The time has come, hence the Ultimate Dispersal. Queen, Queenas and Queenet are now 15 years old have been retired. All other Ayrshires are for sale.

“We bought a lot of good cows from Pinewoods which was Roy Bell’s stud at the seaside town of Oakura. There’s an orchard there now I think where the Pinewoods stud was, just on the edge of the town. All the Pinewoods cows were bought through the combined breeders sale at Waiwakaiho. Donald and I both left school at 15 and came home on the farm and have been here ever since.

Our bodies have just had enough and we are also becoming a little tired of all the regulations you have to deal with now in dairy farming. Our boys are not interested in farming, the farm is not big enough for a sharemilker and we know now is the time we have to let go of the Ayrshires.

“Dad could really put animals together. He taught me how to read a pedigree. He said if you haven’t got the right animals in the 3rd and 4th generations, then you are not going to get them in the first generation, so I’ve always looked back in the pedigree.

We came to this farm in 1975 and we purchased our first Ayrshires in 1976. Our neighbours across the road were Ken and Carole Shaw who had the Stratherrick stud and Albie thought their Ayrshires looked nice. “I just liked their style and the way they ambled along and also their colour. The red and white in a green paddock is a lovely sight.”
