JOSH MUSSELWHITE

RIGSBY’S SMOKED BURGERS, WINGS, & GRILL

Josh Musselwhite started working in restaurants at an early age. He worked side by side with his father at the family’s restaurant in Milford PA. He knew early on that he wanted to become a chef like his dad. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, he quickly was named the Executive Chef at Highland Lake Inn in Flat Rock, NC. With his ambitious standards and bold flavors, he aimed to satisfy every guest he served. Before moving back to PA, Josh was highly involved in the Community Foundation of Henderson County. A non-profit, public charity organization that provides a vehicle for citizens to give back to their community. Community involvement is dear to Josh’s heart.

In the following years leading up to his Corporate Executive Chef role here at Big South Restaurant Group, Josh held Executive Chef positions at Cliff Park Inn in Milford, PA, The Chanticleer Inn in Nantucket, MA, Hilton Hotel in Greenville, SC, The Cliffs of Glassy in Landrum, SC, Ritz Carlton in Naples, FL and Drifters Two in Marathon, FL.

Josh soon met Jeff Rigsby while Rigsby’s Smoked Burgers, Wings, and Grill was still in its infancy stages. Jeff quickly knew he needed to bring Josh on board to take Rigsby’s to the next level. Josh immediately got on board with Jeff’s vision of fresh, chef inspired scratch cooking in a comfortable family setting. Josh is the inspiration behind Rigsby’s chef-crafted menu and culinary flair. When Josh is not creating in the kitchen, he enjoys gardening, fishing/boating, live music, family time, and long-range shooting.

JR BANDY

HEIRLOOM – A MILLTOWN EATERY

Chef John Robert Bandy recalls spending hours in his grandmother’s Spartanburg kitchen at a very young age, while she was making the Farmhouse bread that he remembers most. He fondly recalls the intrigue of the feels, sounds and smells of being in the kitchen, including his absolute determination to touch a hot stove and learn the hard way. He also recalls the nightly dinners when he and his family would gather around the table with his grandmother and parents to eat the meals that he had helped prepare. The feeling of knowing he’d had a hand in making food that brought his family together for those nightly dinners continued to spur his interest in food, how it affected people and inspired conversations and feelings. His natural attraction to food and the kitchen followed him to Riverbend Sporting Resort in Spartanburg, where he’d find every excuse to be in the kitchen with the Chef who told him he’d be making a huge mistake by going to culinary school. Fortunately, having a self-described tendency to go against the grain and “break the rules” (recall the hot stove), he didn’t listen to that advice, and enrolled in Johnson & Wales in Charleston, South Carolina. The Chef says that before then, school never interested him but for the first time in his life, he found education stimulating, and realized he could excel at something he truly enjoyed. While attending Johnson & Wales, Chef Bandy worked in banquet and events for Embassy Suites, Downtown Charleston, where he learned the fine art and machinery of feeding up to 5,000 people, as well as the culinary intricacy of feeding celebrities and dignitaries including several United States presidents. Chef Bandy returned to the Upstate of South Carolina where he held various position in kitchens in Greenville and Spartanburg, including a stint as Sous Chef at Genevieve’s in downtown Greenville. He joined Pinnacle Hospitality in 2017 and has helped spearhead the debut of Heirloom.

She is welcomed back as the Executive Chef at Spartanburg Marriott. Trang is also a chef at the Augusta National Golf Club during the Master's Tournament. She lives and breathes the hospitality industry and enjoys competitive cooking. Trang says, “I am blessed to be able to immerse myself with doing the things. SARAH MCCLURE

SOUTHSIDE SMOKEHOUSE

Growing up in Landrum SC, the daughter of 3 generations of restaurant families, Sarah McClure always dreamed of doing something different, somewhere else. However, after receiving a degree in Art History at Wofford and doing graduate work at UGA, Sarah found herself drawn to the family business in the end. After honing her skills at “The National” under Chef Peter Dale, she learned to appreciate the art of cooking and the foothills mountain beauty of her hometown. Taking over the kitchen at her family restaurant, Southside Smokehouse, McClure upped the ante from traditional Southern-American grill and BBQ food to include more eclectic and adventurous dishes that have won her regional acclaim, most notably as a 2018 SC Chef Ambassador. Husband Robert Hall has found success as the house mixologist as well, winning local titles at Spartanburg’s “Cocktail Master” and Euphoria Greenville ‘23. Together, they now manage Southside along with Chef Sarah’s father, Robbie McClure who was the driving force behind Southside for the first 15 years. Sarah has appeared on two episodes of Food Network’s “Guys Grocery Games” in 2020 and 2023 as well as numerous local and national publications. In her spare time Sarah enjoys traveling to food & beverage centric locals such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, Scotland and anywhere her palate takes her!

MIRANDA GILBERT

SISSY’S SWEETS

Miranda’s love for baking began at a young age when she and her little sister Erika would spend their time together baking cupcakes and other fun desserts. Miranda was a school counselor and radio DJ before she decided to take on baking as her fulltime job. When her sister passed away in May of 2020, Miranda knew she wanted to do something special to keep her memory alive. She started baking out of her home and Sissy’s Sweets began in June of 2020. After much hard work, Miranda decided to pursue her dream full time and opened the first Sissy’s Sweets location in Boiling Springs in September 2023.

She is blessed to hire employees with different abilities and special needs as another way to honor Erika, who had Down Syndrome.

On August 1, 2024, the second Sissy’s Sweets location opened in Spartanburg with the help of Miranda’s brother Jared and sister-in-law Kayla. Their family is thankful to the community for the continued support and they hope to be able to provide jobs and sweets to the Upstate for years to come.

THE THRAILKILLS

AMBASSADOR FAMILY

Meet Josh, Ally, Logan, Parker, and Keaton Thrailkill. Ally was diagnosed with polyhydramnios, or excess amniotic fluid, at 33 weeks. She was induced at 39+6 and her water was broken difference, avoid cord prolapse, one of the bigger risks when it comes to polyhydramnios. Unfortunately, a cervix check shortly after her water was broken showed the cord was coming out first anyway. She was immediately taken for an emergency c-section. Keaton was born within 6 minutes of being in the OR and everything was great for the first day. On day two of their hospital stay, Keaton had a lot of fluid coming out of his nose. They thought it was because of the polyhydramnios/ c-section combination so the NICU sent nurses to suction him out really well. But around 2:00 am the next morning, Ally's night nurse saw it was still happening and sent for the NICU again. They took him to down to check him out and put in an nasogastric tube for the meantime. A swallow study was done the next morning that showed an improper swallow with high risk for aspiration. The Thrailkills were told Keaton couldn’t eat anything orally and he was on a list to transfer to a different hospital for a camera study. They stayed in the Spartanburg Regional NICU for a week before that transfer. The camera study showed what was deemed a lack of sensation in his throat that causes him to not be able to manage liquids, even his own secretions. They bubble at the back of his throat, and because of this, stuff trickles down his trachea. The family still doesn't know why Keaton has a lack of sensation. An MRI of his brain was negative. They did genetic testing as well which all came back normal. A repeat camera study 5 days later showed no difference, and he was put on the surgery list for a gastric tube. Keaton now has a g-tube for all of his feedings and is an incredibly happy baby. His two big sisters, Logan and Parker, are amazing helpers!
