THE SPOKANE CLUB

Wishing you all a happy holiday! I had a wonderful time meeting and interacting with many members at the Tom & Jerry event before Thanksgiving. Nothing gives me more pleasure than a member sharing that they appreciate the work we have been doing because everything I do as the General Manager of the Spokane Club is in service of the membership first, followed closely in service of Club employees (much to be done in 2023). One conversation that resonated with me was with a legacy member who said to me that whenever a member reaches out, I must ensure that I acknowledge and let them know I am listening. I would like to assure you through this message that not only do I seek feedback from members, but it is the highlight of a day when I am able to reach out to a member and tell them we made something happen that they asked for. I am also immensely proud to share that my wife (and Super Mom) Morgan has accepted a job as a Senior Psychiatric Practitioner at Providence. Talking about mental health is especially important in the current times and Morgan hopes to contribute to the better health of the Spokane community to the best of her ability.
As December rolls around and we prepare to welcome 2023, I want to continue updating you about all the improvements we are making around the Club. I personally believe 2023 is when you will start experiencing enhanced services and products as a result of the hard work the team has put in establishing systems, processes, and standards throughout 2022 after COVID brought Club operations to a standstill. I learned that the amount of energy, time, and cost it takes to restart the activity level and bring back standards of service is a lot more than simply continuing to improve what already exists. For that, I would like to thank you for your patience. I would also like to thank each team member of the Spokane Club because it was a lot for them to do in a small amount of time to bring the Spokane Club to not only resemble what it used to be but take it a step further.
In a career spanning 17 years, I worked with some of the most luxurious hotels in the world for the first 12 years and then transitioned to the private club world in 2017. I understand well that 2500 Spokane Club members mean many different interest groups who would like to see the Club prioritize its capital investment in a few different areas. I would like to once again remind you that the Club has an active Board of Trustees, a Membership Committee, and a Sales & Marketing Committee and if you would like to be part of the decisions that lead to the success of the Club, please join our committees! We are committed to collaborating with the membership for making some high-impact decisions. Look out for food tastings,
cocktail trials, polls, focus groups, and surveys in the coming months. I am excited about what 2023 will bring to the Club. The following enhancements have been either completed or will be completed in the coming few months:
Athletics/Sports:
The gym surface will be fully refinished in January.
The gym court lines will be re-drawn and we will have 3 pickleball courts going forward to support our growing pickleball community. This will also allow us to start pickleball leagues next year.
The basketball court will also get an upgrade with new lines, a new scoreboard, and new wall pads finished with the Spokane Club Logo.
The handball/racquetball courts have already been resurfaced earlier this month.
The Sports Shop floor was changed from carpet to a hard floor, fixing the constant staining of the carpets.
The new elevator is now available for member use. If you need to use it to get to the 3rd or 4th floor, please ask Sport Shop for assistance.
The poolside patio concrete was replaced as it was uneven, which was a safety hazard. We are also cleaning up the area in preparation for spring when we will plant fresh grass and will have more finished space for member activity.
We have now added a full roster of personal trainers for you to choose from! Each trainer focuses on a different area of fitness to make sure you meet your goals. Come by the Personal Trainer desk in the conditioning room and have a chat with our trainers to see what works best for you.
Many of you already know that the conditioning room is now 24X7, which was made possible by installing new door-locking mechanisms, a camera system, and a panic alarm system.
3. Aligned with our new brand vision of being more inclusive and supporting the local community and its artists, we partnered with Yelena Yunin to create a mural replacing a blank green wall in the weight training area.
4. We added a stretch cage and a massage table! We are also looking to add a couple of new pieces of equipment so look out for a survey in the Sports Shop to vote for the next equipment purchase. I know a Hip Abductor has been a popular ask and also a cold plunge.
5. We also added some state-of-the-art equipment to the Sapphire Studio, namely a Peloton and Lululemon Mirror. We have had a steady flow of users who likes to do a guided workout in a more intimate setting. The studio continues to be available for TRX Classes along with the gym as needed by the instructors. Food & Beverage:
The Deli offerings have expanded thanks to our in-house baker Christy, who has been spoiling us with her delicious baked treats, meal options, and grab-and-go snacks. We also hired a Restaurant Manager for 1910 Restaurant and Lounge. Leonie will be working closely with Chef Eric to make the member dining experience at 1910 a special affair all nights of the week. The 1910 Restaurant and Lounge is gearing up for a soft relaunch on February 14th. We will share more details soon but the idea is that the 1910 dining experience should be that members should want their guests and clients to experience it with them.
As part of the relaunch, you will see new furniture, fixtures, and equipment in 1910.
Spokane Club Wine Club aka Cellar Dwellers is also getting a revamp and will be launched early next year for the Spokane Club oenophiles. We are installing a new outdoor kitchen on the poolside patio so we can host more member events and cater better to swim meets, which have seen 100+ attendees in recent months. A new AV system will be installed in the banquet rooms for catering events. We bought a new washer and dryer for hotel linen to keep up with the record demand in the hotel. Crucial upgrades were made to the hotel elevator.
Hotel room renovations are underway to help continue boosting hotel revenue, which is very important for tackling overall expenses. Street level façade work of the historic building will start in spring. Employee lockers and break room areas are getting much needed upgrades starting in December.
6. A new pool vacuum was bought to handle the increase in pool usage. It also allows us to save man hours that will be used to continue the upkeep of the area.
7. We have upgraded technology on all fronts so that the front-end user, our members, and the back end users, our employees, can have the best experience in using their respective sides. I hope you have already downloaded the Spokane Club app and are using all the new features. We have fixed the Sports Shop check-in system, so you do not have to fiddle with the barcode scanner and can scan your member card on the horizontal scanner once again.
8. We have installed 2 reader boards, so members are updated on the latest Club news and events at a quick glance!
I hope some of the things listed above are exciting and give you plenty more reasons to use your Club as often as possible. Inflation is at an all-time high and wages are going to go up by a considerable amount next year. The Club is taking assertive action to tackle the growing expenses, but the Club is also committed to continuing investing back into the membership experience because we are confident that the membership will always back the Club in a time of need, just as it did during the COVID shutdown. The owner's mentality of the Spokane Club membership is what differentiates it from other organizations. We hope to add 50-60 new memberships in the near future, which might be enough for what we need to be in a stable financial position. Again, member referral is still our best source of new memberships, so if you know someone who might be a good fit, please encourage them to join. We are the one Club for your whole life.
Yours sincerely, Harmukh ‘Molly’ Sandhu (331) 210-4105 hsandhu@spokaneclub.org

2023 is fast approaching and I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to those who do not know me. I have worked for the club for the past 6 and a half years as the Aquatics Manager and most of you know me as Coach Chris. I have loved every moment I have spent working with you and getting to know each of you. 6 months ago, I took on the role of Technology Manager and was given the task of upgrading our systems to current industry standards. We have accomplished a lot but still have work to do for you.
Last month I accepted a new role at the club as Athletics Director. I have started that transition with the goal of being fully acclimated by the start of 2023. I will be maintaining my role as head swim team coach and continuing to move our excellent aquatics program forward. I have the deepest respect and trust in the professionals on our team that you work with daily. We truly have the best team in the Spokane area and I am blessed to work with each of them. Whether it’s working with Tracey-childcare and family events manager and her team, Nathaniel-fitness supervisor and his team, ThomasAquatics Coordinator and his team or Josh-Assistant Athletics Director and his team, I look forward to using my 15 years of management experience as well as my experience with the Club to create a top tier experience for you in 2023.
Meet Chris Barry, Athletic Director
To many of you, the Spokane Club is your second home and you spend many hours here each week. To me, you are my second family. I intend to bring that mentality into my new role as Athletics Director. My office door is always open (4th floor of the athletics building) for any feedback you may have. If you don’t want to make the trek up to the 4th floor, I’d love to buy you a drink at the Deli and learn what we can do to improve your experience. I look forward to working with all of you in 2023 and beyond.
Coach Chris, Athletic

Starting on January 2nd, we will be having our basketball gym closed for renovations. As many of you know, we, unfortunately, had water damage on the northeast corner of the basketball court. We are looking to have the floor completely refinished, add new Club logos, and paint updated court sports lines. We are also looking into replacing our scoreboard and wall pads, bringing a much-needed refresher to our facility. These types of repairs take time, and we will be closing the gym for about 5 weeks to start the new year. However, we believe that this is long overdue and are very thrilled to see the results come mid-February. We thank you for your patience with us on these big projects and are excited to see members get to use a facility that is as great as you all are.
It's no secret the pride our members have for our Club, and what better way to show it than by wearing some new gear around town? We are working hard on a new merchandise launch coming soon to the Sport Shop. Whether it be a hoodie you wear around the house or your new favorite workout outfit, there will be something for everyone! It doesn’t stop at apparel either. We will be getting in a variety of products with the Spokane Club logo. Keep an eye on your inbox for the latest updates!
2023 - The Year of Sports
The Spokane Club Athletics staff is prioritizing creating athletic events where members can meet new people over friendly competition. In 2023, we are prioritizing (not limited to) two different sports, Pickleball and Basketball. Pickleball is the largest growing sport in the world right now and we have created a small but strong community of players here at the Club. We hope to carry this over to the new year creating more play opportunities. Whether we open more court times or plan socials/tournaments, keep an eye out on our calendar for these awesome events. Basketball is deeply rooted in the Spokane area, and we are no strangers to this. The Spokane Club won a national championship in 2019 for our travel basketball league! COVID unfortunately took away our opportunity to defend our title, but we are confident we can get it back and become nationally recognized for our members' skills and talents once again. We will also be adding a wall for banners to hang up some of our great accomplishments over the many years the club has been around!
Henry,
instructor at the Club! "I started teaching swim lessons in 2017 and have taught ever since. I have taught group lessons and private lessons alike, in southern California and at Gonzaga University. I have taught lessons ranging from parent and child classes to teaching the fundamentals of each stroke to help build competitive endurance for each stroke. I focus on making sure each swimmer progresses at their own pace. I like to push swimmers to excel at what they enjoy doing in the water while
they’re building
We are proud to announce our newest Assistant Athletic Director, Josh Brandon! Josh comes from a sports background and has vast experience with athletics in the Spokane area, including involvement with Gonzaga Athletics and the Spokane Shock.
A short statement from Josh, "I am excited to be given this opportunity to be the Assistant Athletic Director at The Spokane Club. Between Chris and I, we share a vast knowledge of sports and athletics operations and how the two can be an integral part of your lives. I look forward to seeing how much we can grow the Spokane Club Athletic's name in the community and provide all our members with top-tier service. My past experiences interning with Gonzaga’s Athletic department while obtaining my Master's in Sports Management will help guide me in being the best version of myself for the Club."
It's the perfect way to warm up during this cold winter. We'll be serving up chocolaty hot cocoa with all the fixings: marshmallows, whipped cream, crushed candy, and more! Customize your hot cocoa however you'd like. Ho Ho Hot Cocoa is available as is or spiked with your favorite spirits. Add a minty twist with Peppermint Schnapps or get cozy with a splash of bourbon!
Once a month, groups of committed members dedicated to continuing the legacy of the Spokane Club meet to discuss Club business. Below are reports from the chair of the Membership Committee, Christopher Greene, and the chair of the Sales & Marketing Committee, Bruce Hunt. For more information about all of the Club committees and to become involved, please visit the Governance page at members.spokaneclub.org.
The Membership Committee is responsible for reviewing applications for Club membership and recommending the acceptance or rejection of applicants to the Board. At the same time, the Membership Committee is charged with seeing that an adequate membership, in both numbers and representation, is maintained. As such, recommendations are made to the Board regarding necessary programs to accomplish membership goals. Additional responsibilities of the Membership Committee include oversight of the Club’s membership policies; periodic review of classes of membership, initiation fee structures, and dues; evaluation of complaints regarding member conduct and recommendation of resolutions to the Board; and dissemination of House Rules governing member conduct at the Club.
The Sales and Marketing Committee is comprised of members of the Spokane Club who volunteer their time to assist the General Manager, the Marketing and Innovation Manager and the Business Development Manager to develop and implement strategies and tactics that advance the Club’s efforts to grow its market presence and revenues from Membership, Hotel Occupancy, and Catering Events. The group meets monthly on the third Wednesday of the month at 1:00 PM at the Club and via Zoom. The committee is constituted annually after the Club’s Annual Meeting. The term of service is one year and consecutive terms are permitted. Current topics and initiatives include Brand Ambassadors, Community Event Participation, Testimonial Videos, and Business Partnerships.
The club is a great place to be when it’s cold outside! We have plenty of fun activities for your kiddos in childcare. Drop them off with us and get a workout in or just sit up in the café and have a warm cup of coffee. We will keep the kids entertained and happy!
We have lots of fun events coming up this winter, including Santa’s Sleigh Bell Breakfast on December 10th, Crafty Elves workshop on December 16th, Winter Break Camp starting December 19th, a Winter Paint Night on January 13th, several Parent Night Outs, and much more. Be sure to check the website calendar to see what is happening and to sign up. We look forward to seeing you at the club!

What does it take to get a woman-owned, values-driven publication off the ground? We're sitting down with Spokane Club members Erin Peterson and Melissa Berry, the creators of Trending Northwest — a monthly magazine covering everything from fashion to food, from beauty to adventure, with a pulse for what's trending. Covering the culture and events of the Pacific Northwest and driving attention to local businesses and residents alike, Trending Northwest is one of those rare endeavors that not only fills a niche but gives back to its community in an authentic way. We're beyond excited to talk to Erin and Melissa about
their lifelong passions, overcoming obstacles, and making their entrepreneurial dreams come true!
Erin and Melissa met when Melissa first moved back to Spokane in 2018 and started her Instagram account and blog, Everyday Spokane. Melissa, co-founder and digital editor of Trending Northwest magazine, is a proud Gonzaga grad (go class of '09!) and said her love of Spokane brought her back with her husband Blake. Erin, co-founder and print editor of Trending Northwest magazine, grew up in Post Falls and had always loved crossing the state line to enjoy a little bit of the “big city” for concerts and cultural events. Erin eventually achieved her goal of moving to Spokane and began her brand featuring "amazing things on the Spokane scene, above and beyond "just" food." When Melissa reached out about contributing to a local publication where Erin was serving as a
feature editor, the two bonded over their passion for the PNW and, "the rest is history!" With a couple of successful businesses of their own under their belts, Melissa and Erin chose to embark on an incredible journey together. Their motivation to start their own publication stemmed from their desire to create one central hub that showcases diverse storytellers, covers the latest hotspots, and helps people plan vacations all around the northwest. Through their YouTube channel, @TrendingSpokane, podcast, web presence, social media, and soon-to-be print magazine, thousands have already experienced the best of
the Pacific Northwest through its multimedia presence. "Our goal is to be your one-stop for everything lifestyle and travel related to the northwest, and we want to be on every medium (social, web, print) so anyone in any age demographic can find and enjoy our content. "
Going into business with your best friend can be tricky, but Melissa and Erin found they were the perfect match. "The one thing we recognized in each other is our determination, competency, and ambition. Erin is definitely the dreamer of the two of us, but she has such admirable goals and aspirations that it's exciting to be an integral part of that vision! Melissa prefers to be behind the scenes and build the structures that support our goals, so between the two of us, we've been able to accomplish so much in a short amount of time. We basically just started talking about our dreams, realized we each had strengths the other didn't, and thought, "Why not us? Why not now?" It also helps that we both have a similar sense of humor - we never go a day (or an hour) without laughing!"
What does it mean to be at the forefront of what's hot across the region? Through their different work styles, they reach multiple sources to report on a variety of topics. Erin is the talent-seeker. She loves connecting with new people and works with contributors that are "amazing writers, artistsbasically, people you should know but who are sometimes overlooked in our region." Through her network, she's also brought local celebrities and prominent community members on the Trending Northwest podcasts, such as The Budget Mom Kumiko Love (our personal favorite episode) and Stephanie Olsen, the first female prosecutor for Spokane County. Melissa scours the internet for the latest news and trends. If you use Facebook or Instagram to get your daily dose of what's happening in the region, Melissa probably pops
up on your timeline a lot. She regularly shares the latest in Spokane culture, not limited to food, fun, and community involvement.
Since its launch earlier this summer, Trending Northwest has already received a lot of love from readers and businesses alike. “We're thrilled by how many people have been enthusiastic and supportive, and we're so happy we have so many contributors who believed in us from the start and wanted to write for us without hesitation.” The enormous support by the community has allowed Trending Northwest to evolve into a printed magazine, which is being partly funded by their Kickstarter. Since launching their campaign in early November, Erin and Melissa have seen a wave of individuals and local businesses investing in the publication. Producing content in the digital space often takes a lot of time and effort only to have little feedback from readers. Fulfilling their Kickstarter goal showed the duo how serious the community was about backing their publication.
What does the future of Trending Northwest look like? Keep your eyes out for the very first print edition coming in January and every quarter after that. You’ll also see more videos from the magazine as well as a great variety of topics being covered by their ever-growing group of talented contributors. And, of course, Trending Northwest will continue to bring the high-quality content their readers and podcast listeners have come to expect.
We couldn’t end the interview without asking what Melissa and Erin’s favorite parts about the Spokane Club are. Melissa loves the athletic facilities, including the state-of-the-art equipment in the new Sapphire Studio, and Erin, “I am a big fan of the event spaces, especially getting to attend Rotary 21 in the ballroom every Thursday!”

Like many of Spokane’s historic landmarks in the downtown core, the ashes of the Great Fire of 1889. What started as a potentia control quickly because of the failure of the town’s fire hoses predominantly wood building went up like matchsticks.
In a misguided effort to contain the fire, workers set dynamite to the buildings, which only spread the fire’s reach. In the en 32 blocks were completely destroyed. Remarkably, only one person died.
In the aftermath of the fire, businessmen who were now without offices set up shop in temporary tents and began the arduous task of rebuilding the town. One of those businessmen was Herbert B. Nichols, a driving force behind the creation of the Spokane Club. He arrived in Spokane Falls in 1886 and established the first electric light plant and the telephone company.
Six months after the Great Fire, followed by a harsh winter wit snowstorms frequently blocking railroad tracks, delaying supplies and mail, Nichols was fed up with wet tents and makeshift meeting spaces. He dreamed of an elegant gentleman’s club modeled after the historic clubs of England.
Nichols rallied 20 prominent leaders around his cause, including Arthur A. Newbery, who ran a coach line and later, the Northern Pacific Railways, and William A. Taylor, a former Spokane Falls Mayor and President of Spokane National Bank. Each of the 20 men invested $500 in the club venture.
Our iconic club has shaped, and been shaped by, the greater history of Spokane and the Inland Northwest for generations. It has survived and thrived by evolving with the times, the people, and the economy, from the small town of Spokane Falls to the robust city that is today’s Spokane.
