With summer coming up and more people out walking, biking and enjoying Santa Clarita’s trails and paseos, it’s the perfect time to practice a Heads Up! attitude. Whether you’re on an e-bike or on foot, staying alert and aware keeps everyone safe. Bike riders should stop at stop signs and lights, signal their turns, ride predictably and yield to pedestrians. Use lights when riding at night or early in the morning, ride on the right and alert others before passing. Keep your speed in check and wear a helmet. Pedestrians should stay focused, avoid distractions (like phones) and make eye contact with drivers before crossing at designated crosswalks. And drivers—put the phone down and watch for others. With more activity on our streets this summer, let’s all do our part to share the road safely. SantaClarita.gov/HeadsUp

Healthcare Serving the Community

Clear Behavioral Health
BY ALICIA DOYLE
Clear Behavioral Health provides mental health and addiction treatment for clients suffering from depression, anxiety, ADHD, stress, PTSD, drug and alcohol addiction and more.
“We’ve bridged the gap between affordable, in-network mental health and addiction treatment, and luxury, comfortable treatment programs to heal,” said Brittani Skinner, program director at Clear Behavioral Health in Santa Clarita.
Programs range from drug and alcohol detox and rehabs to outpatient mental health programs, featuring evidence-based therapies, clinical and community support and holistic treatments.
“Our state-of-the-art treatment center in Santa Clarita provides personalized and relatable mental health treatment for both teens and adults to receive support and healing from whatever challenges they face,” Skinner said.
What makes Clear Behavioral Health so unique?
“Most programs only offer individual therapy, group therapy and sometimes family therapy,” Skinner explained. “What sets us apart is our comprehensive approach to recovery.”
Clear Behavioral Health incorporates different types of therapies, such as individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, case management and holistic modalities.
“This multi-layered approach helps you reconnect the body and mind, while building your support network and learning life-long coping skills,” said Skinner, adding that the focus is on reconnecting the body and

mind, along with the life skills that can be implemented immediately. “We focus on tangible coping skills that can be used for the rest of your life and help you re-build your support network.”
Established in 2015, Clear Behavioral Health has expanded across the Los Angeles area and adapted virtual programs for those who need them.
When it comes to family involvement – considered crucial for recovery – the program integrates family therapy in ways that differ from traditional approaches.
“We incorporate family therapy by making sure you work on familial relationships,” Skinner explained. “That could entail dissecting familial dynamics, processing arguments, learning communication styles and understanding how to be open with each other.”
For patients who worry about disruption or school schedules, “we have case managers that can help you work on this aspect – they can communicate with your work or school about the situation,” she said.
Clear Behavioral Health also has various levels of programs, so some might be partial hospitalization, or outpatient programs.
“Both of these options have you spend a few hours a day, a few days a week on treatment,” Skinner said. “Additionally, we also have a virtual IOP in California, which offers even
more flexibility for some.”
IOP programs offer evidencebased therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Somatic Therapy.
“These therapies – coupled together with our group therapy and holistic modalities like sound baths, meditation, journaling and yoga – really set us apart,” Skinner said. “When you marry holistic and western medicine together, the outcome is really beneficial.”
While medication management is not the main goal, “if it’s needed, it’s absolutely prescribed,” she said. “Instead, we see medication as a stepping stone to healing. We assess the needs of our patients, so they get the best treatment plan for them.”
Clear Behavioral Health is in-network with most major insurance companies, including Anthem, Aetna, Optum/United Health Care, Magellan, Healthnet/Ambetter, Com Psych, Prime Health, First tracks, Blue Shield, TRICare and TRIWest.
“We do not take Medi-Cal, Medicaid, or Kaiser,” Skinner noted.
The ultimate goal of Clear Behavioral Health is to continue expanding across Los Angeles, “so we can keep reaching demographics that need our help,” she added. “Additionally, we are partnering with more health insurance companies as well, so we can make sure our clients have covered or lower cost care.”
Clear Behavioral Health is located at 26330 Diamond Place, Suite 120/130, in Santa Clarita. For more information, call 866-692-1240 or visit clearbehavioralhealth.com/santaclarita.

Future Robert G. Veloz Cardiovascular Services Bring New Lifesaving Technologies to our Community
More than 10 years ago, a generous expression of gratitude from Roberta G. Veloz paved the way for the opening of the Henry Mayo Cardiac Cath Lab named in her honor. Shortly after her donation, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital was designated a STEMI (Heart Attack) Receiving Center by the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency.
The future of Roberta G. Veloz Cardiovascular Services is focused on innovation, expansion, and brining advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional procedures to the Santa Clarita Valley. As the community continues to grow, so does the need for stateof-the-art facilities and lifesaving procedures.
New Technology
Henry Mayo is committed to providing exceptional service and state-of-theart heart care, while educating our community on healthy choices that will help Santa Clarita Valley residents enjoy a good quality of life.
Recent services offered include the AGENT™ DrugCoated Balloon and the Coroventis CoroFlow Cardiovascular System.
The AGENT™ DrugCoated Balloon is used in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). It is

designed to deliver a drug directly to the site of a narrowing or blockage in the coronary arteries during a procedure known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or angioplasty.
The CoroFlow Cardiovascular System is designed to detect microvascular (small artery) blockages. Approximately 60% of patients with blockages in small arteries

are women.
Recently introduced, the TherOx Supersaturated Oxygen Therapy System is designed to restore blood flow and reduce damage to the heart.

the initial lack of oxygen. TherOx addresses this issue by delivering supersaturated oxygen to the damaged area of the heart, kick-starting the healing progress and significantly reducing long-term complications.
Using a specialized catheter, highly oxygenated blood is directed to the affected heart tissue, helping to minimize the size of the damaged area. For patients, this can lead to improved recovery and a lower chance of future issues like heart failure.
“The introduction of SSO2 therapy at Henry Mayo is a game-changer for certain heart attack patients,” said Jennifer Whitcomb, Henry Mayo’s Director of Service Line Development. “By incorporating this advanced therapy, we are offering our community access to one of the most promising treatments available for reducing heart damage and improving long-term heart function.”

Consider These Community College Benefits
ollege is the next natural step for many students after they finish high school. The process of finding a school begins in junior year of high school, and students and their parents may visit many different colleges and universities throughout the next year.
Even though the bulk of the focus might be on fouryear schools, students who may not yet have everything all figured out should not overlook the many benefits of community colleges.
The United States Department of State’s Educa-
tion USA says community colleges offer two-year programs that lead to the Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree. Some community colleges also have vocational programs.
Community colleges are a viable option for students interested in continuing their education. Undergraduate students studying at community colleges can earn academic credit that will eventually go toward a bachelor’s degree should they choose to continue schooling. The following are some of the benefits of
community college.
Flexible Admissions Process
Community colleges do not have the same time restrictions and other requirements as schools offering four-year degrees. Interested parties may be able to register for classes at any time and not have to worry about being accepted or not.
Part-Time Scheduling
Community colleges often offer part-time academic coursework, which means students do not have to take a set number

of credits each semester to remain enrolled. This allows students to attend college classes according to their own schedules and work at their own pace.

Since 1982 SCCS has been providing Christian families in the Santa Clarita Valley with a biblical, rigorous, and fully-accredited program (WASC & ACSI). This year, twenty-two of our twenty-eight graduates have also earned their AA degree through our dual-enrollment partnerships. We are thankful for the Lord’s grace as we strive to excel still more.

SCCS Celebrates Forty-Third Graduating Class!
Since 1982 Santa Clarita Christian School (SCCS), a ministry of Santa Clarita Baptist Church, has discipled students with the gospel of Jesus Christ. SCCS is accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) demonstrating the rigor and integrity of our K-12 academics. CIF State Championships in Basketball (2018), Volleyball (2021), and Swimming (2023) testify to the ongoing pursuit of athletic excellence. Our primary mission, however, is “to partner with Christian parents of like faith to teach students’

To lead students to a personal relationship with Christ as Lord and Savior and be increasingly conformed into His image. (Deuteronomy 6:5-7; Romans 8:39; Colossians 1:28-29)
Learn Truth and Discern Error
To lead students to a fuller knowl-

Live Wisely and Serve Others
To prepare students to live godly and fruitful lives as ambassadors for Christ in the world. (2 Corinthians 5:1415; Colossians 1:9-11)
We thank God for the opportunity to disciple and deploy graduates who continue to make a difference in the world for God. May He grant us the grace to continue this work until He returns!
Please join us in congratulating the graduating senior class of 2025!

Absence to Engagement: How Student Leadership is Turning the Tide
cross the United States, schools and families are grappling with a troubling rise in chronic absenteeism among students. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% (18 days) or more school days, has grown significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the 2022-2023 school year, nearly one in three students was chronically absent, with even higher rates for students with disabilities, students of color, and students learning English as a second language.
Chronic absenteeism, largely driven by student disengagement, has serious implications for academic success. When students feel disconnected from their school, they are less likely to attend, and their academic performance suffers as a result. Chronically absent students are more likely to fall behind in their studies and are four times as likely to drop out of high school.
To address this, superintendents, principals, and educational administrators are exploring innovative strategies to foster a stronger sense of belonging at school and boost student engagement.
Igniting Peer Leadership to Boost Engagement
Many schools have discovered that mentorship programs, peer-to-peer relationships, and socialemotional learning initiatives can help students feel more connected to their school communities and improve attendance rates. By leveraging one of the most underutilized resources in schools—students themselves—through peer mentorship and lead-

ership programs, school communities are able to cultivate supportive, caring environments that motivate students to attend and engage.
One organization, Center for Supportive Schools (CSS), has seen success with its Peer Group Connection (PGC) program, which fosters peer leadership and mentoring. This program has proven effective in boosting attendance and engagement across grade levels.
“Chronic absenteeism continues to be an everpresent challenge, but it’s not one schools have to face alone,” shares Center for Supportive Schools Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jonathan Mathis. “By empowering students as leaders and mentors, we can foster engagement, connection, and belonging. Through peer leadership, schools can build a strong culture where every student feels supported, motivated, and ready to succeed.”
In a 2018 study of more than 8,000 students, CSS found that those who participated in PGC attended
Lower tuition is one of the major draws to community colleges. The career planning resource Indeed says that many community colleges further discount their offerings to in-state students. This helps make post-secondary education much more affordable, particularly for those who are not sure about what they want to study.
Relationships with Four-Year Schools
A number of community colleges have partnerships with sister schools to facilitate the transfer of associate degree credits for a student working toward a four-year degree. Education USA says in this “2+2” process, a student can earn a bachelor’s degree with two years of community college, followed by two years of university study. Some community colleges also serve as satellite locations for other schools, meaning one can take classes
school an average of six more days than students who did not. A year after completing the program, participants attended between 2.4 and 7.8 more days of school than their peers. “My peer leaders motivate me to get better grades and to keep coming to school,” shared one PGC participant. By encouraging students to take on leadership roles and strengthening peer relationships, PGC helps students develop a stronger sense of identity with their school community, leading to improved academic outcomes. Additionally, the program equips students with valuable leadership skills that will serve them well after graduation.
Elevating Student Voices to Foster Belonging
Another CSS program, known as When Students Lead (WSL), empowers groups of peer advocates to conduct research, identify pressing issues within their school community, present solutions, and implement student-led campaigns to
address those issues. This program helps students feel more connected to their peers and their community by giving them a leadership role on issues that matter most to them. It also fosters important leadership skills, including research, data analysis, critical thinking, collaboration, negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Making A Lasting Impact on the Next Generation
The evidence is clear: when we empower students to lead, connect, and support one another, their attendance and performance improve.
By implementing peer-topeer programs, schools can reduce chronic absenteeism while creating a stronger sense of community, improving student outcomes, and providing students with crucial leadership skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. For more information, visit www.supportiveschools. org. (NewsUSA)
for a four-year school right on the community college campus if the location is more convenient.
Smaller Class Sizes
Many community colleges have smaller class sizes that make it easier for students to adjust to the pace of college life.
Proximity to Home
As the name implies, community college is a school that serves a particular community. That means it is likely close to home for the majority of students. Students who may not be willing or able to go away to school may appreciate the convenience and proximity of a community college.
Community college is an option that students may want to explore as they pursue post-secondary education. (MC)

Slicing meats and cheeses right in front of you is not only the tastiest way to make a sub sandwich – it’s the only authentic way. Same goes with fresh grilling cheese steaks. At Jersey Mike’s, we would have it no other way. Serving Oven Fresh Bread Daily. Authentic Jersey bread is the foundation of a sub above. We bake our bread fresh in our stores every day. Traditional white and whole wheat. It’s the only way to have a truly authentic Jersey Mike’s sub.
Our culture of giving at Jersey Mike’s is as much a part of our heritage as oil and vinegar. We believe making a great sub sandwich and making a difference can be one in the same. Every store we open starts by partnering with a charity in the local community. Because the way we see it, a sub’s job isn’t done at simply tasting good. A sub should do good too.

WHO OWNS YOUR SEWER SYSTEM
1
Your Pipes. The pipe that connects the draining plumbing in your home or business to the sewer in the street is known as a sewer lateral. The owner of the home or business is responsible for maintaining the drainage plumbing and the sewer lateral.
If there is an overflow from your plumbing (e.g., toilet, sink or shower drain), stop using your water immediately and contact a licensed plumber (or the property owner). You may also need to contact a specialized clean-up service to help remove spilled water and disinfect property that came in contact with spilled water.
2
Local Sewers. Local sewers transport sewage from neighborhood homes and businesses to larger, regional sewers. Your city (or other public agency) maintains these local sewers.
If you suspect a problem with a local sewer, please contact one of the following who are available 24/7:
• City of Los Angeles: 213-485-7575 (LA Sanitation)
• Other cities in LA County: see www.lacsd.org/overflow for contact information
• Unincorporated LA County: 626-458-4357 (LA County Public Works)
3
Regional Sewers. The regional sewer system transports sewage from local sewers to a treatment plant. In the City of Los Angeles, these regional sewers are maintained by LA Sanitation. Otherwise, the regional sewers are maintained by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts who can be reached at 562-437-6520 (24/7).
When you call about a sewer overflow, please provide the following information:
• The address where the overflow is occurring or nearest cross streets.
• The time the overflow started or the time was first noticed.
• Whether the overflow is ongoing or, if known, when the overflow stopped.
• Estimated area of the overflow (e.g., 10 feet long by 3 feet wide).
Pleasantview Industries
Many Santa Clarita Valley businesses are struggling with workforce shortages and Pleasantview wants to help these businesses connect with the largest untapped workforce resource available today — individuals with developmental disabilities.
Research shows, time and time again, businesses experience measurable benefits when they hire inclusively, both financial and social benefits that are too significant for companies to overlook.
Companies that hire individuals with developmental disabilities experienced 1.6 times more revenue and 2.5 times more net income than those who did not hire inclusively, according to research performed by Accenture, a global multinational professional services company, reflecting a clear financial benefit to hiring inclusively.
Contrary to the concerns employers have about the cost of accommodations workers may need, on average, the expense of accommodations are less than $500. In fact, one of the most common accommodations is a service Pleasantview offers — job coaching for the employee with a disability is entirely free of charge for the employer. Employees with developmental disabilities have increased retention
and lower absenteeism. Employers may also be able to receive tax credits for hiring individuals with disabilities.
The spending power of individuals with developmental disabilities and their community also can positively impact the business and the economy, with estimates reflecting that they have $500 billion in disposable income and often chose to spend with companies who hire inclusively.
Socially, statistics show that businesses experience increased morale when hiring individuals with disabilities as well as an increase in overall organizational performance.
With skills based hiring one of the most significant HR trends of 2024 and again in 2025, businesses that give these candidates an opportunity will find the workers often excel and thrive in skills based work. We understand businesses often do not know what work individuals with developmental disabilities can do, so Pleasantview offers consultation for businesses to discuss the work of the company to determine where these workers may best fit in their workplace.
As a business leader myself, I understand how difficult it is to find, and retain, excellent employees and we at Pleasantview want to support local businesses in finding excellent em-

ployees. Information about these benefits, and our services, can be found on
our website or email Ricki at ed@pleasantviewindustries. org.

Investing in the Future
BY LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERVISOR KATHRYN BARGER
This spring, I proudly joined the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley to celebrate the unveiling of a $50,000 van funded by my office that will take local youth to educational field trips, sports leagues, summer programs, and college tours. This new van isn’t just a means of transportation, but an investment in the future of our youth. I was proud to fund this important resource for the local Boys & Girls Club because it will enable children and teens to connect to opportunities that enrich their lives and propel them toward their goals. The van will primarily serve youth in the unincorporated communities of Castaic and Val Verde. In the words of Boys & Girls Club CEO Matthew Nelson, “This van is more than just a vehicle—it’s a gateway to education, enrichment, and opportunity for the young people who need it most.”
For more than 55 years, the Club has been a vital cornerstone in the Santa Clarita Valley, supporting, guiding, and inspiring our youth and families. I’m proud to partner with the local SCV Boys & Girls Club to support their 12 locations that serve more than 2,200 children and teens.

Investing in the Club and other youth-serving organizations is an investment in the future of our communities. Every opportunity for nonprofits, schools, and local governments to partner in service to our youth serves and strengthens the Santa Clarita Valley as a whole.

Green Thumb: The Garden Experts
Known as the home of the garden experts, Green Thumb Nursery in Santa Clarita is a second-generation, family-owned nursery and garden center that offers quality, experience and expertise unmatched by big box stores.
Customers are the priority, “and giving the best customer service is our goal,” said Bryan Payne, General Manager.
Customers choose Green Thumb Nursery for the quality of plants at an affordable cost. For instance, they offer a wide variety of landscape plants, flowers, fruit trees and vegetables, including common and more unique plants that are compatible with the climate in Santa Clarita, such as evergreens, ferns, drought-tolerant varieties, bonsai trees, annuals and perennials.
Best sellers include roses, fruit trees, citrus, and flowers that go into your flower beds and hang from your patio cover, as well as cactus and succulents. Green Thumb Nursery also offers house plants, sod, pottery, soil amendments and fertilizers, both traditional and organic, as well as lady bugs and other beneficial insects.
Their wide selection of up-scale patio furniture includes bistro-style tables and chairs, designs made with wrought iron and wrought aluminum, adjustable chaise lounges, and tables that can be customized with a variety of materials, such as copper, aluminum, like-wood porcelain and like-tile porcelain.
They also carry items for the home, including candles, pillows, doormats, wreaths, silk plants, lanterns, placemats and decorative baskets. For outdoor décor, choices include fountains, birdbaths, wind chimes, decorative stakes and garden gnomes.
Green Thumb Nursery – which has been serving California since 1946 –opened its Green Thumb International Garden and Patio Center in Santa Clarita in 1970.
“Green Thumb Garden Center is an extension of the original owners’ desire to offer a premier garden center to the residents of the San Fernando Valley,” Payne explained.
Since the beginning, Green Thumb Nursery has taken pride in its consistent effort to better the environment through moral business practices by always making the environment a
priority, and continuing to provide products that are safe and responsible. Their environmental commitment includes striving towards becoming 100% “green” and leaving only positive impacts on the community and the world; and maintaining a commitment to sustaining the environment by only selecting products that meet rigid eco-friendly criteria.
As far at the future is concerned, Green Thumb Nursery will continue incorporating technology and social media.
“However, even in today’s on-line world, this does not replicate the joy of walking into our stores and experiencing the peace and beauty that comes from nature concentrated in our outdoor and indoor spaces,” Payne emphasized.
Ultimately, “we hope to impact the world by providing products and services that bring people back to nature and into the garden where humans have been designed to labor from the beginning of time,” he added. “Gardening is therapeutic.”

Communities Benefit When Consumers Shop Local
Ideas about shopping are never set in stone, and the pandemic illustrated just how quickly consumer trends and opinions can change. Many individuals are now reevaluating how they spend their hardearned money, particularly since inflation has affected just how far a dollar can be stretched.
When consumers think about which stores to patronize, locally owned businesses may be the smartest option for a number of reasons — not the least of which is the way such enterprises benefit the communities they call home.
More
Money Kept in the Community Shopping locally means that more money will stay in the community.
According to recent research from Civic Economics, local eateries return nearly 79% of revenue to the community, compared to just over 30% for chain restaurants. Overall, for every $100 spent at a local business, around $73 remains in the community, versus roughly $43 when shopping at a non-locally owned business.
Get a Personal Touch
Local business owners typically are inclined to go the extra mile for their customers and are personally invested in the services and products they are selling. As a result, shopping locally tends to be a personalized experience. Furthermore, a local business owner may be more amenable to ordering products for specific clientele.

Such personalized service is typically not accessible when shopping big box stores or other shops where owners are off-site.
Lines are Short
Waiting in long lines for checkout or to pick up merchandise ordered online can drain consumers’ energy and contribute to stress. Local businesses tend to have short lines and small crowds, which can lead to a more pleasant shopping experience.
Generates Tax Revenue
Local businesses generate more tax revenue per sales dollar, according to Rubicon, a digital marketplace for waste and recycling businesses. Taxes paid by local small businesses go to support schools, parks, roads, and other programs that benefit the community as well.
Support Nonprofits
Local businesses often support
good work in the community, such as nonprofit groups. These can include schools and sports teams, among other groups. According to Dr. Sue Lynn Sasser, professor of economics at the University of Central Oklahoma, studies indicate nonprofits “receive 250% more support from small businesses than larger ones.”
Support Other Local Businesses
Local business support other local businesses by buying and selling among each other. A local, independently owned restaurant may source its ingredients from local farms, which means visitors to such eateries are supporting multiple local businesses each time they dine out.
Small businesses are a boon to the economy, particularly local economies. These enterprises help their communities in a multitude of ways. (MC)
