CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2025

After the Los Angeles wildfires in January, various communities have undertaken efforts to support those affected, while also implementing strategies to help prevent fires in the summer.
Girl Scouts Brownie Troop 70572 is among those making a difference: With the help of the city of Santa Clarita, the troop planted over 70 fire-resistant plants on Chuck Pontius Commuter Trail in Canyon Country on Wednesday, May 14.
“They decided to do an ‘outdoor journey’ this year — they’re first-year Brownies. Part of the ‘journey’ is they have to do something called a ‘Take Action Plan,’ and that’s where they learned about solving a problem in the community that needs a sustainable solution,” Troop leader Katie Goldman said. “They hadn’t really heard of that word before, so they were throwing out ideas and we were writing them down.”
According to Goldman, the mem-
bers of the troop, who are 8 years old, initially wanted to put fences around flowers to protect them. However, when the wildfires occurred, Goldman and her co-leader, Nicole Meraz, diverted the project to planting fire-resistant plants.
“I went to City Hall, and now [the city] is helping us. The girls sold cookies to earn the money to pay for the plants,” Goldman said.
“Anytime we sell anything, whether it’s the fall product or cookies, the money that they earn goes to the troop, and then the troop decides what to do. Every year we do something like that. This year, we landed on outdoor stuff and started out with flowers and ended with fire-resistant plants,” Meraz said.
The funds are often split between something fun for the troop and giving back to the community. According to Meraz, $600 was spent on buying computers for students in need last year. This year, roughly $500 was spent on the plants.
“[The girls] wanted to build houses for people, but I’m like, ‘We have
to start small,’” Meraz said. “Our girls really love the community. They love the community they live in. They love playing.”
Gustavo Ruiz, groundskeeper for the city of Santa Clarita, assisted the troop members, while teaching them techniques to plant properly.
“I basically maintain the city parks and trails. For me, in particular, I’m on the trails team, and we maintain all the trail systems — we have about 100 miles of trails. I’m in charge of the plants themselves, the irrigation systems, the trail systems, the fencing that we have all around, and the overall safety and aesthetics of our park systems,” Ruiz said.
While this isn’t Ruiz’s first time assisting a volunteer group, this is his first time helping a Girl Scout troop. Ruiz encourages residents to assist in their own ways, as well.
“In our parks or in our trail systems, we host various events where we host volunteer groups, even with kids,” Ruiz said. “With [summer approaching,] residents can maintain their
landscape to ensure that any dry brush is away. If they see something, or even brush clearance that they know is city property, they can fill out a request through the Santa Clarita Mobile App, that way city staff can prevent or reduce the risk of a fire hazard.”
The troop members gathered to watch Ruiz remove the plant from the pot in an upside down manner, use a hand rake to spread out the roots, and even press down on the soil once the plant was planted, before doing it themselves.
“I like that I’m helping the community and the animals that live here. [I like science], and I did enter the science fair. My project was a homemade lava lamp,” troop member Diya Arun said. “It’s really fun to plant.”
“I think this is really fun because my grandma’s really into gardening. Every time I go to their house, I get to help her,” troop member Riley Griffith added. “I feel really lucky because I like helping people with things, and I just like gardening a lot.”

Golden Valley High School held a ceremony on Monday, May 19, honoring several student-athletes who have committed to their respective colleges or universities.
Among the signees being honored were track stars Kiera Donovan, Addae Ma’at and Nyah Fields.
Donovan recently took the CIF Southern Section Division 2 girls’ discus title for the third consecutive year and is set to attend Cal State Fullerton. She also placed fourth in the shot put.
Ma’at placed first in the boys’ triple jump and third in the long jump at the CIF finals. He has signed to UC Riverside.
Fields was also a standout at the CIF
finals in the jumping events, taking second in the girls’ long jump and third in the triple jump. She is also set to attend UC Riverside.
Two football players, Jordan Flores and Aryana Chandra, are set to attend California Lutheran University.
Nicholas Waldron has signed for the University of Southern California to play for the Trojans’ men’s volleyball team.
Skylear Sears was a leader for the Golden Valley baseball team and has signed for Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Will Flint helped the Golden Valley boys’ soccer team to a couple of wins this past season in the Southern Section playoffs and is planning to attend the University of Redlands.

Golden Valley’s Kiera Donovan gets her third consecutive CIF discus title; five total individuals, two relay teams from Foothill League claim victories
By Tyler Wainfeld Signal Staff Writer
The victories just keep on coming for the Canyon High School girls’ track team. The Foothill League champion Cowboys added the CIF Southern Section Division 2 title to their resume, beating out second-place Murrieta Valley by more than 20 points.
Canyon won both relays, while Lanai Gant, a member of both of those squads, won the 400-meter dash.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Canyon head coach George Velarde in a recent phone interview. “We are so happy for the girls’ team, the track program, our school, our community, the coaching staff. We’re so excited that that opportunity was able to happen for the girls, and obviously they embraced it. And, you know, we’re celebrating a CIF championship.”
Golden Valley was fourth in the girls’ team standings. Kiera Donovan claimed the D2 discus title for the third consecutive year and also placed fourth in the shot put. She is ranked seventh in the state in discus and 16th in shot put, according to Golden Valley co-head coach Megan Cooper.
Gant won her individual event in 54.92 seconds. Two of her teammates, Alaya Graves-Hogains and Lyric Scott, finished second and third in the 400. Scott was third in the 200, followed by Graves-Hogains in fourth and Gant in fifth.
All three of those girls were part of both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Emoni Wright helped to win the former, and Keziah Webster helped to win the latter.
Those placements were a big reason why the Canyon girls went from taking third at the CIF finals last year, to finishing on top this season.
“That was a goal from the end of last year, building off of what we did last year,” Velarde said. “And we knew that at this time of year, if we were healthy, you know, we had a good chance. And obviously our girls are healthy, and they did extremely well.”
While Donovan was the big star for the Golden Valley girls’ team, Nyah Fields also showed out with a second-place finish in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Noa Prothais took fifth in the 400.
Fields is ranked eighth in the state for the long jump and 18th in the triple jump.
On the boys’ side of the meet, Canyon’s Jordehn Gammage won the 110-meter hurdles and placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. He was last year’s state champion in the latter event, and Velarde said it’s just the way it worked out this year that he’s performing better in the former.
“He’s gonna work on and tweak a couple things to see if we can knock off a few more seconds,” Velarde said.
Gammage and Nathan Hernandez, who took second in the pole vault, helped the Canyon boys to a third-place finish in the team standings.
Owen Souther set the Canyon school record in the 1600 with a time of 4:14.22 to take seventh, less than
a second behind Hart’s Eli Ahten, who was fifth. Golden Valley’s Addae Ma’at claimed the triple jump title and was third in the long jump. His mark of 48 feet, 11 ½ inches in the former broke his own school record, and he is currently ranked fourth in the state in the event.
Josh Farley was just behind his Golden Valley teammate with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump.
Cooper thinks all three of Donovan, Ma’at and Fields can make it to Buchanan High School in Clovis for the state meet.
“Addae and Kiera have been there before and are very eager to go back,” Cooper wrote in an email. “Nyah is working extremely hard to make her first trip to state.”

The Santa Clarita City Council on Tuesday, May 27, authorized a rate increase for its commercial and residential waste-management services, which is associated with cost increases due to the closure of Chiquita Canyon Landfill.
The increase was approved 4-0.
Chiquita abruptly stopped accepting waste Jan. 1, which prompted Burrtec, the city’s contractual waste-hauler, to find an alternate site for the city’s trash, in Sun Valley, according to city officials.
“When delivering waste to Chiquita, Burrtec was required to pay $37.50 per ton for disposal,” according to the city. “The disposal cost at each of the viable alternative sites was over $90 per ton.”
In order to pay for the difference in cost for trash transportation and disposal rates, the City Coun-
cil approved a rate hike that comes out to $7.52 per month for the standard residential user who has 96-gallon “trash carts” — for a new total monthly charge of $37.39.
The increases were described as being 14% to 25% for residential customers and 6% to 25% for commercial ratepayers, which changes based on container size and frequency.
The rate also is intended to cover the cost increases Burrtec has assumed since Jan. 1, according to the city’s agenda.
Burrtec made the request Jan. 15, according to the report prepared by Darin Seegmiller of the city’s Neighborhood Services Department. Burrtec also justified the new fees in a report requesting the increase.
The city’s current agreement with Burrtec expires in 2033, and the waste-hauler expects to be able to make up its difference with the rate increase through the life of the contract.
Burrtec also requested fees for extra carts. The new rate for an extra cart went up $1.62 per month. The commercial rate for a 3-cubic-yard bin picked up weekly is going up nearly $21 per month.
“Chiquita, formerly the second-largest active landfill in Los Angeles County, served as the city’s designated disposal facility for waste,” according to Seegmiller’s report. “In anticipation of its closure, and in response to ongoing operational disruptions, Burrtec began exploring alternative disposal options in 2024.”
While the city’s agenda mentions the potential for the landfill reopening, Chiquita Canyon Landfill officials, when asked, said there were no plans to reopen the facility.
The elevated temperature landfill event is expected to be an issue for years despite a number of efforts from the facility to stem the smell.

When Christina Paz Arguello received her letter of acceptance to the University of Oxford, her family didn’t just celebrate — they went all out.
Her sister played the Harry Potter films on the television, blasted The Beatles’ most iconic songs in the background, as she also made an English-themed dinner and dressed up Paz Arguello’s niece in an England onesie.
Jessica, her mother, grew suspicious when Paz Arguello broke the news. Her parents were speechless because their daughter had just earned herself a spot at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
In March, Paz Arguello, a Golden Valley class of 2022 graduate, was accepted to the University of Oxford Reuben College, for an accelerated one-year master’s of science program in medical anthropology beginning this fall.
She also graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, a year and a half early with a bachelor’s degree in
legal studies, and double minor in disability studies and political economy.
Paz Arguello began to look at Oxford a few years ago, after she took a college admissions bootcamp. During her undergraduate program, she took the leap of faith and began the application process, which consisted of a 1,400-word personal statement and numerous letters of recommendation, as well as maintaining her high GPA and extracurricular activities, she said.
Even with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia, Paz Arguello has managed to create a successful educational career for herself, but it doesn’t mean it hasn’t come with its hardships. She just has her sight on the bigger picture.
“I understand the importance of a world-class education,” she said during a recent in-person interview. “My parents wanted a better life, they wanted a better opportunity and wanted what’s best not just for themselves but for their future generations.”
With her dyslexia and ADHD, her mother helped her develop new study techniques that will help her retain her information better, and she was encouraged by her professor who is an Oxford alum to apply.
The University of Oxford has been named the best university in the world for nine consecutive years by the Times Higher Education, and it’s the longest time any university has held the position, Oxford’s official website states.
The Filipina-Latina American plans to pursue medical anthropology, which studies human health, illness, and healing practices form a cultural and social perspective. “It incorporates so many disciplines. It’s biology, it’s public health and it’s sociology,” Paz Arguello said.
Her end goal is to get into health
care law, and her inspiration behind that is Paz Arguello’s grandmother, who she refers to as Lola.
“When I was like, 10 years old. She was like, ‘I want you to be a lawyer,” and even when she doubted herself, Lola was there to encourage her and remind her of her special characteristics that she knew would help her succeed in the field.
During Paz Arguello’s senior year of high school, Lola experienced a stroke and, through her recovery process, her family filed a malpractice suit due to doctors misdiagnosing her, Paz Arguello said. Another similar situation occurred with her mother, she added.
“It was so traumatizing losing her like that,” she said, referring to Lola.
“It made me question the medical system,” which is why focusing on studies that can help her understand these
systems was her focus. “I wanted to address them somehow, so I think my passion for law with these experiences is why I wanted to pursue that.”
The 21-year-old Southern California native is excited to embark on her new journey across the world with a few other of her peers who were also accepted to the public university.
Her parents have also been very supportive throughout the process, Paz Arguello said, even though her mom has shed a few tears about her youngest leaving the nest.
As she now begins to prepare herself to fulfill a life dream, she also advised the next generation of students to “not wait around for your dreams to come true. They’re never going to come. You have to go out yourself and do the most that you can. Don’t be afraid to take risks.”

Students at Cedarcreek Elementary School participated in the Los Angeles Rams’ “Play 60 Field Day,” which according to a Rams’ news release, is designed to engage “K-5th grade students with the game of football in a non-competitive setting, while also promoting healthy eating habits and encouraging students to move their bodies for 60 minutes a day.”
Students and staff alike wore matching “Play 60” T-shirts while participating in various obstacle courses and drills, as well as making blue, white and yellow beaded bracelets with the Rams cheerleaders.
Merly Soni, who has been principal at Cedarcreek for three years, discussed reaching out to the Rams’ community outreach in order to make this event possible for the students.
“‘Play 60’ promotes a healthy lifestyle. ‘60’ comes from moving your body 60 minutes a day, as well as building good care for making healthy choices. This is our first year doing this,” Soni said. “Our focus as a school is we’re an ‘Edible Schoolyard’ school. Which means that we grow our own food in our garden and then we cook it, and that goes hand in hand with living a healthy lifestyle. Now we’re just adding the physical fitness component.”
The children interacted with cheerleaders and the mascot, Rampage, while working on various drills with the coaches.
“These are one-hour sessions, and we have a total of three sessions. So we broke the kids up by

gold medal in the Scholastic A Division finals.
Michael Uno, Hart High color guard booster member, was thrilled for Hart and the other high schools getting their medals.
“I’m very excited. I think among everybody I was just tracking the scores across the board for all the schools that are in Santa Clarita, like Valencia, Canyon, Saugus, West Ranch, Hart and even Castaic. And I track everyone’s progress week to week, from competition to competition,” Uno said.
Uno said that he began noticing that the schools in the district were doing very well across the board.
Soni contacted David Weingarten, senior manager in Community Impact and Engagement for the Rams, and coordinated logistics for the event.
“I have a student who is a kindergartener here, and [David is his uncle,] so I reached out, and voila, now we have this event. He told us what he needed as far as setup, and they did everything else,” Soni said. “I just want people to know that we are promoting a healthy lifestyle that students can implement as early on as elementary school and for the rest of their lives.”
Weingarten, on behalf of the Rams, discussed the importance of teaching healthy lifestyles early on.
“Play 60 Field Day showed kids how fun staying active can be through football. We’re proud to promote 60 minutes of daily exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Events like these make fitness fun and accessible for every child,” Weingarten wrote in an email to The Signal.
Third grader Jazmine Jiminez, 9, and second grader Lucas Aguilar-Nunez, 8, discussed how fun the event was.
“My favorite so far is when you hit the base and catch the football. The best part of playing with my friends,” Jiminez said. “Everything is easy. You just
Steven Peralta, Canyon High School color guard director, said he was more concerned with the performance aspect rather than the competition for his team.
Canyon High won the gold medal in the High School AA Division Finals.
“That’s always been like the emphasis for me, and I just want to make sure that students know that it’s never about winning or a title or a medal. I think it’s more about the experience. Overall, I did think that they had a good run,” Peralta said.
He added that color guard is great for students because it exposes them to this type of artistry and gives them a place where they can really be themselves.
The medals that each team won are as follows:
• Scholastic AA Division Prelims: Golden Valley took bronze, and Valencia took silver.
• Scholastic A Division Prelims: West Ranch took silver and Hart took gold.
• High School AA Division Finals: Canyon Country took gold.
• Scholastic AAA Division Finals: Saugus junior varsity took bronze, and Castaic took gold.

“I like throwing the ball. I think everybody’s just trying to get a good spiral,” Aguilar-Nunez said.
“This is really fun.”

The William S. Hart Union High School District color guards won big during their preliminary and final competitions for the Winter Guard Association of Southern California on April 12-13. All the Hart district high schools won at least one medal at the competition.

gold medal in the Scholastic A Division finals.
• Scholastic AAA Division Finals: Saugus junior varsity took bronze, and Castaic took gold.

have to try your best.”
“I like throwing the ball. I think everybody’s just trying to get a good spiral,” Aguilar-Nunez said.
“This is really fun.”
