On January 16, 1920, five women, Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Pearl Neale, Viola Tyler and Fannie Pettie, Zeta’s dynamic founders, forged a living legacy that continues today. Charles Robert Taylor and A. Langston Taylor, brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., played an integral role in the naissance of that legacy. They were the first to encourage the creation of the Sorority, and that support and encouragement led to the first, and only, official sister –brother affiliation.
The Founders laid the groundwork for a strong organization and set the standards for the many outstanding Sorors who have worked, and continue to work, to keep the Sorority true to the ideals set forth by these pioneering women—Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood.
In remembrance of charter member and past president Soror Bessie King Jackson and in alignment with the sisterhood’s principle of scholarship, Sigma Iota Zeta Chapter continues to support the youth in the community by supplementing their financial needs in attaining a higher education.
On October 30, 2010, our beloved Soror Marian Hann went to be with the Lord. Soror Hann was a charter member of Sigma Iota Zeta chapter and served as chair for the Breakfast with the Artist program for many years. In her memory, this award will be presented to a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. for their service to the organization.
LaNiya Davis, is completing her fourth year as a student at Canal Winchester High School. She has known adversity and strength since she was a young child. Born prematurely and weighing just 2 lbs, LaNiya became very aware of how the world would treat her and challenge her. Whether challenges came from school children, handling medical challenges, or dealing with personal issues at home, she found her way through. Around her 7th grade year, she sparked a love for reading. This love helped her develop passions from the books she read, looking for relatable characters that sometimes helped her with things going on in her life.
When the pandemic hit, LaNiya was going into her freshman year, which was time she thought she would have enjoyed, but it again was another setback that caused her to reevaluate her life and what she wanted out of it. Being creative and diligent in wanting more for her life, she found ways to make the best of a bad situation. In her junior year, she went back to school in person. She was excited, but unfortunately, she would experience severe medical issues that placed her in the hospital to the point of missing too much school. This didn’t stop LaNiya however, as she finished her schooling that year online.
In her senior year, LaNiya has tended to classes with passion and zeal. She has decided to study English Literature and Interior Architecture while in college. To add to her list of accomplishments, Ms. Davis established her own business. She has been accepted to 15 of the 20 schools she has applied to, but her hopes are set high to attend Ohio University in Fall 2023.
Helen Mossisa is yet another example of just how strong and resilient our children are today. Arriving in the States from Ethiopia at the age of 12; Helen entered a whole new world. In this new world, she was swept away to a new school in her 7th-grade year. Helen was not well equipped in her use or understanding of English. By the start of her 8th-grade year, however, she had studied hard and worked tirelessly that summer with the aid of her sisters. During her 8th grade year, she received straight A’s.
This was just the beginning for Helen. She continued to study rigorous courses in high school and took AP classes. During her sophomore year, Helen thought about her best friend, who was her grandfather. He was a powerful inspiration before and during his last days, he helped her set her sights on becoming a doctor. This has now taken a slight change after Helen participated as a volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She is currently pursuing nursing as a way to give back to her community.
Fast forward to today; after switching her major from Biochemistry to Nursing, Helen has begun her path to becoming a nurse while completing her first year in college at The Ohio State University. She continues to work hard, and shares her passion with others both in the classroom and in the community, and is boldly becoming a role model for others to follow behind her.
