‘Cutability’ def: The ability to be cut
‘Soft-Eye’ Applications It is a forgone conclusion that using MateenBar™ in TBM ‘soft-eye’ applications is very advantageous over steel. The cutability of MateenBar™ allows the TBM to eat right through the RC structure and into the earth behind the slurry wall at the beginning of the project and also at the end of the project.
Face Bolts GFRP face bolts are a very e!cient way to shore the face of a tunnel being excavated by a TBM. The cutability of MateenBar based face bolts allow the TBM to consume the face bolts without the need to spend the man hours removing temporary reinforcing. Non Metallic nuts and bearing plates combined with MateenBar™ create a complete cutable system.

The Eastlink tunnel in Melborne has continuous rebar through the Springvale Road section. Engineers determined the eddy currents would create a corrosion problem. To counter this, MateenBar™ was used as cathodic breaks in lieu of a traditional cathodic protection system or sacrificial steel because it was the most economical and passive option.

Soft-Eye Application During the construction of the Singapore MRT underground stations, various concrete walls and columns had to be built in the path of the TBM prior to tunneling. MateenBar™ was used for ‘soft-eyes’ within walls and ‘softcolumn’ sections in positions where the TBM would be required to cut through during later stages of construction.
