VOICE OF THE ESA expansion. Over 4,500 newly initiated members have joined SAE and these outstanding young men are making their communities stronger as they begin the lifelong journey towards becoming a True Gentleman. We presented the 350,000th membership badge to an undergraduate brother at Montana State University; our fundraising efforts within the Foundation continue to surpass all goals; and, this academic year we reinstated chapters on eight campuses where SAE once existed. As I look to the second half of this biennium and to the future of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, I see our fraternity continuing to become stronger and more visionary than ever before. Achieving and exceeding all the goals we have set will require us to reimagine the fraternal experience and take advantage of opportunities in today’s modern world. It is vital that we honor our promise to cherish the past while simultaneously embracing the future. The Supreme Council and our Fraternity Service Center Staff remain steadfast in our mission to move this fraternity forward and to create powerful leaders of the future. Our Founding Fathers built a foundation that for generations has revolved around a set of core principles. These principles have shaped, guided, and taught us what it means to be a gentleman, a leader, and a pioneer. Sigma Alpha Epsilon as a whole must be focused and intentional about what we do and how we make our global communities better. So again, I ask, how can we continuously maintain and exceed the ambitious standards that we have set for ourselves? Ultimately, it is about involvement; get involved, be involved, STAY involved throughout our lifelong membership. Together, let us roll up our sleeves and do the work needed to lead SAE into an astonishing era of growth, expansion, leadership, and innovation! As members of this great Fraternity, we all know that, since our inception in 1856 on the banks of the Black Warrior River, our fraternity, as our Mission directs us, has been built on the foundation of setting the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, leadership, and service throughout our entire lives. What does it mean to set a higher standard? Why is it important for members to understand the purpose of our organization? A mission is the foundation or duty assigned to individuals to fulfill through actionable tasks. Our Mission Statement outlines our existence as a fraternity and, as a member within it, we must aim higher than the bare minimal standards. Whether in our academics or hours of service, or by serving as a chapter advisor, house corporation officer, or a Province Archon, we should always maintain a high bar and stay above the status quo in all aspects for our beloved fraternity. We lead the way in all areas of our lives while remembering that the expectations of membership stay with us always, not just for our undergraduate years. Within the first year of our two-to-five-year vision, we are seeing phenomenal results as we continue to focus on growth and 4

RITUAL ACADEMY The 2021 Ritual Academy took place on November 12 and 13 at the Levere Memorial Temple. 133 undergraduates attended and 5 alumni attended. The curriculum for Ritual Academy was assessed on 10 competencies: Diversity, Inclusion, Creating Change, Organizational Behavior, Personal Values, Ethics, Analysis, Facilitation, Excellence, and Group Development. A new seminar presented by David Griego called “From the Obscurity of Prejudice & Superstition: A History of SAE’s Triumph Over Our Exclusionary Clauses” discussed SAE’s history with exclusion in the Fraternity and putting it into context with the time period that various forms of the Constitution were revised in. With a positive rating of 95%, we are pleased with the implementation of the 2021 Ritual Academy curriculum.

I N T H E I R WO R D S We started with just 13 young men in February of 2020. Due to Covid-19, we didn’t officially meet each other until August. However, we got right to work and progressed through our maturation and growth quickly. We gained 16 new members in the fall and then added another 21 in the Spring of 2021. Using new recruitment practices, dealing with hybrid and online environments, we increased chapter size by nearly 300%. With more brothers came more ideas. We were able to successfully throw more social and philanthropy events. We maintain a chapter GPA that consistently scores in IFC’s top 10. These guys put in the work when a lot of people would have rested on their laurels. They matured quicker than they were asked. We are proud of our success to this point. We will bring chapter size to near 70 this fall. We will raise close to $10,000 in philanthropy. We will continue to be scholars in the classroom, and gentlemen everywhere else.

I N T H E I R WO R D S Since the day of our chartering, we have fully transitioned from a colony to a fraternity. This was a huge day for our chapter, the sense of brotherhood has become stronger in every member. There has been growth in every member of the chapter, being more supportive of a fellow brother or finding a way to help out within the community. Also giving back to the house, whether that be at chapter meetings or helping each other out. We have grown as an execuitve council coming together and holding all members accountable and responsible for filling their duties. Keeping this fraternity growing and recruiting members worthy of the True Gentlemen is a top priority. We are proud to tell anyone who asks that we are members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

The Emerging Chapter at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina was reestablished in February of 2019. Our brothers have worked to overcome many struggles in Greek life at Furman to become a thriving part of our campus community. We quickly established a brotherhood respected by our peers and hosted many successful social and philanthropic activities. Furman’s chapter has a long history and many of our campus buildings are named after notable SAE alumni. In December of 2021, the South Carolina Phi chapter was reinstalled by Sigma Alpha Epsilon and became a fully recognized chapter among the Furman Interfraternity council. We are continuing to work towards expanding the chapter and are looking forward to a great future for South Carolina Phi.

Furman University is the oldest private institution of higher learning in South Carolina and also the state’s highest-ranked institution of higher education. It is one of the “most rigorous schools in America” along with Columbia, Harvard, and Yale. The campus is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, for which it has received global recognition, specifically for its landscaping.

BY BLOOD AND BOND Fraternity life is different for just about everyone who decides to go through the process, but there are certain commonalities many fraternity men have as far as what they hope to receive from the experience. One of the largest of these is Brotherhood: Men are looking to find like minded individuals to bond with, cooperate with, learn from, and to share in their successes and failures. While many people find these types of connections through their biological family, fraternities offer an opportunity to expand one’s network and develop brotherhoods that are not chosen by blood.

“FOR SOME FAMILIES, YOUNG MEN JOINING SAE IS NOT SIMPLY AN OPTION, BUT OFTEN A RITE OF PASSAGE” When one combines these two bonds, both the fraternal bonds given by Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the biological bonds given by family and lineage, there can be powerful results for all parties involved. For some families, young men joining SAE is not simply an option, but often a rite of passage for their household, with some of these traditions dating back hundreds of years and multiple generations. Through this interweaving of family and fraternity, certain members experience a heightened level of awareness on just how much our beloved order benefits our lives, and one hopes to see this intermixing continue for generations to come.

One of the finest examples of the power of familial connections within the Fraternity is the Lee family of Washington, DC and Augusta, Georgia. The Lee family is an old southern family that

26

has been in the Capital area for over 30 years, and the Augusta area for centuries. Their connection to SAE is just about as old. Lansing B. Lee Sr (Georgia 1906) was an Augusta lawyer and, along with Bobby Jones, helped to found the Augusta National Golf Club, home of the annual Masters Tournament. He also started the family tradition of SAE when he joined SAE at The University of Georgia (Georgia Beta) in the early 1900’s. Lansing B. Lee III (North Caroliona ‘69) took after his grandfather, and later became an international lawyer based in DC, representing Presidents, Prime Ministers, CEO’s, and other Matriarchs and Patriarchs of business. Also like his grandfather, Lee III expanded upon the SAE tradition when he joined SAE at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (North Carolina Xi) in the late 1960’s. During my conversation about SAE with Mr Lee III, he gave many reasons for his joining and continued support of our beloved order, as well as the origins for his affections. Lansing B. Lee IV (Left) and Lansing B. Lee III (Right) at the Rose Bowl to cheer on Ohio State, 2021

Despite his grandfather’s affiliation, Lee III did not feel any pressure to follow his legacy when he was rushing at The University of North Carolina. He went into recruitment with an open mind, looking for a group of men who took school seriously and behaved gentlemanly, while also having a good time. When growing up in Augusta, Lee III knew many men and peers of his, including most of his neighbors in the Hill section neighborhood, who had joined SAE at different southern universities, all coming back home with great stories and high praise for the organization they had chosen. As Lee III describes it, “about every other house in the neighborhood had an SAE alum or an active” living there, which surely helped Lee III understand how impactful SAE could be on his own future. The North Carolina chapter was no exception to this, and during recruitment Lee III naturally gravitated to what he saw as a good group of guys with values and goals similar to his. He quickly found a supportive group of lifelong friends and became very involved with the chapter, serving as Pledge Class President and other leadership roles within the chapter. Some of his fondest memories include “all the guys and gals getting together around UNC football and basketball weekends, socializing and catching up” and “band parties in the Big Fraternity Court in front of the

community. A natural part of this investment naturally comes from joining Greek Life, and OSU is certainly a thriving greek community to join. Lansing III did not pressure IV about joining SAE. With no connection to the state or the school, Lansing III did not want to influence his son's decision without knowing what the local SAE chapter was like and being sure it would be the right fit for him. Despite the lack of pressure to do so, Lansing IV did naturally gravitate towards the chapter at Ohio State (Ohio Theta), a strong group composed of gentlemen, just as his father did before him.

Lansing B. Lee IV (Left) and Lansing B. Lee III (Right) at Ohio Stadium to watch OSU take on Michigan, 2021

Lansing IV managed to continue a three generation family tradition of Lansing Lee SAEs that is now over 100 years old, and spans to schools spread across the Eastern and now Midwestern United States. This type of dedication to the fraternity and to the continuation of the great legacy is very admirable, and leads to a certain interconnectedness within the family that many would love to achieve. The Lee family is quite an extraordinary example of how far the legacy connection extends for some families, but they are certainly not alone in their family tradition.

SAE house” after the game. Lee III’s was cemented by the good times and great friendships he made while in college, and his connection to the North Carolina Xi chapter has remained true and strong. He has recently been very involved with the rechartering process of the North Carolina XI chapter, making sure that a strong group of young men get involved with the chapter and begin the process of rebuilding it to its former glory. Lee’s dedication to NC XI and to SAE at large is astounding, and his continued support can still be felt across the realm to this day. With this type of dedication to the fraternity so ingrained in Lee III, it would make sense that the family tradition would naturally continue. During the spring of 2019, it became time for Lee III’s son, Lansing B. Lee IV (Ohio State 2023), to select what university he would attend. The Lee family has a storied history at many different universities primarily across the Southeast, with members of the family attending great schools like UNC, the University of Virginia (UVA), the Medical College of Georgia, and even Harvard. However, Lansing IV had a different idea of what he might like, and decided to venture out to The Big Ten in the Midwest and attend The Ohio State University. This was certainly no step down either, as he was admitted to OSU as a Buckeye National Scholar, where he continues today as a rising Senior in the Fisher School of Business. While not connected directly to Ohio State, the Lee’s were excited to become a part of Buckeye Nation and about Lansing IV’s opportunity. They encouraged him to invest himself in the campus SAE • THE RECORD • SPRING 2022

The Rolader Family in Argentina for a Dove Hunt, 2019

My own family is another prime example of such interconnectedness. When one thinks of legacies, one often thinks of familiar pressure, or overactive alumni trying to push the next generation into a choice. For my family though, the emphasis was on joining something, so long as it bettered you as a man and supported you in the right ways. For my father, Richard Martin Rolader (North Carolina ‘87), that opened up a world of possibilities. As a freshman at UNC, he pledged SAE and joined the North Carolina Chapter (North Carolina Xi). TheNorth Carolina XI is a storied group, being the third oldest chapter of the realm, and being the historian that my father is, he dove deeply into SAE and the history that built it into its current form. During his time there he served in many Executive positions and greatly enhanced himself as a character, 27

BY BLOOD AND BOND as testified not by his own word but by the words of his friends and peers. His lifelong friend and classmate Anne Hasset describes how “Ric really opened up at UNC and became somewhat of a big deal socially” through his work with the North Carolina Chapter. By finding such a welcoming and supportive environment, my father transformed himself and his life into something greater, something brighter, something more profound than anyone would have assumed when he left for school. He came back from UNC with these memories and many other great experiences, and never let the brotherhood be forgotten.

“SON, YOU ARE IN A BRAVE NEW WORLD. IT IS UP TO YOU TO DECIDE WHAT IS BEST AND SHAPE YOUR LIFE FOR YOURSELF.” When it came time for me to rush, my father did not push me to follow the legacy option. I was going to a much different school than UNC, and my family had no connections to Louisiana or Louisiana State University at all. When I asked him about the legacy option with SAE, Ric told me “son, you are in a brave new world. It is up to you to decide what is best and shape your life for yourself.” Despite his deference to my choice, something about SAE and the thought of a continuation of my heritage appealed to me deeply. I come from a long line of Southern fraternity men, and I wanted not only to keep with tradition, but to expand on it. I’ll never forget that phone call on bid day, where I told my father of my choice and how excited I was to be an E. We shared one of our most serene moments of both understanding and pride on that call, and I knew right then and there I had made the right choice. I joined the Louisiana State Chapter in the fall of 2017, and so the circle remained unbroken. My undergraduate experience was a peak

28

in my life and taught me so much about being a man and a True Gentleman, and I am forever grateful that I get to share this understanding and bond with my family. A few years into my experience, and around the zenith of my time as an Undergraduate brother, it came time for my little brother, Alexander “Xan” Rolader (Auburn 2023), to make a choice on where to go to school and where he would rush. Not wanting to live in the shadow of our family, he chose to go to Auburn University. Auburn has a thriving Greek life, and so Xan had many choices available to him, each fraternity offering something different and more amazing than the last. Auburn’s SAE chapter (Alabama Alpha-Mu), is another old chapter of the realm, and like Louisiana State or North Carolina, is storied in rich history and tradition. However, Alpha Mu was just coming off a two year “vacation” for bad behavior, and so joining the chapter in 2019 meant that the members would be expected to work very hard to bring the chapter back to its rightful place of glory. The SAE house at Auburn University

“I HAVE SEEN WHAT YOUR EXPERIENCE HAS DONE FOR YOU AND WHAT IT DID FOR OUR FATHER. SAE IS A MOLDER OF MEN, AND I WANT TO LEARN AND GROW INTO THE TYPE OF MEN I LOOK UP TO.”

Brotherhood is a tough subject to define, as many have different understandings or experiences with the concept. While the concept may be tough to understand in the abstract, it can be felt clear as day when one is a part of it, and SAE does a wonderful job at giving thousands of men the ability to experience such love and support. When you couple that brotherhood with a family tradition of being True Gentleman, an undergraduate member receives not only the support and love of his current brothers, but also the pride in knowing he is doing his family and his heritage proud. This is something to be cherished and preserved, and hopefully the next generation is just as excited to be SAE’s as the one’s before them have been. This experience is unique and irreplaceable, and SAE men must try and provide the same level of adventure and joy for their sons.

While not a terrible option, I pushed my brother to fall in with one of the more established chapters on campus, so that he could enjoy his experience more and stress about the fraternity less. Having been a part of Louisiana State’s third initiate group since our own chapter’s closure, I had lived through the experience of building back a sleeping giant and the growing pains that come with that. Between that and my Executive Council experience, I had seen “how the sausage was made” so to speak, and I wanted my brother to be spared some of the stresses I endured. When we had this conversation, he looked at me like I had been speaking in tongues. He responded to my thoughts with a declaration that echoes in my mind years later, as he stated “I have seen what your experience has done for you and what it did for our father. SAE is a molder of men, and I want to learn and grow into the type of men I look up to.” With that, the decision was made, and Xan was initiated into the Auburn chapter in the fall of 2019. The three of us now all knew the bonds and the brotherhood we shared, and it became a topic we could always land on and talk about for hours. Beyond being kin, we had now found a common ideology to share in, as well as similar experiences and great memories. It strengthened the familiar bonds we already had, and continues to do so through reminders of SAE’s lessons. “how good and how pleasant for brothers to dwell together in unity.”

SAE BROTHER GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE BY A BE THE MATCH DONOR BY: ERICA SEVILLA

IN 2018, FRANK GINOCCHIO (NORTHWESTERN ‘66) KNEW JUST A FEW THINGS ABOUT HIS DONOR: SHE WAS A 23-YEAR-OLD WOMAN FROM GERMANY. ALL BETTINA RIPPEL KNEW WAS THAT SHE AGREED TO DONATE SOME OF HER BLOOD STEM CELLS TO AN ANONYMOUS PATIENT FROM THE U.S. SO THAT HE COULD ENJOY MORE TIME WITH HIS LOVED ONES.

Patients such as Frank, who battle leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers, can be cured if they receive stem cell transplants from matching blood donors. Halfway across the world, a young woman named Bettina received word that she was a 12-for-12 match for Frank. That’s 12 of 12 matching human leukocyte antigens, genetic markers passed down in a person’s DNA – half from mom and half from dad. A 12-for-12 match is the best possible scenario for a marrow or stem cell transplant. It is so rare that most patients only find a matching donor among their siblings just 25 percent of the time. Bettina would have to wait two years before she could find out more about the patient whose life she would save. She only knew he needed her to give him the precious gift of time – time spent enjoying retirement, traveling, simple pleasures like boating, and seeing his grown children raise his nine grandchildren.

A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE Frank and his grand daughters

14 M O N T H S T O L I V E Frank’s journey over the years has been one focused on family, success, brotherhood, and laughter. He graduated from the prestigious Northwestern University in Evanston, married his college sweetheart, Nancy, and began a family. He and his brother spent 20 years working together building a wholesale food business. In 1993, he became the Director of Operations and eventually General Counsel for Sigma Alpha Epsilon, the brotherhood he joined in college, which he cherishes for all the relationships –old and new – that he continues to enjoy. “I realized how many of my oldest friends are fraternity brothers, and I enjoy the chance to make new friends and connect with young people because we become like family,” Frank said. “If you go to a university of 30,000 students, having someplace you belong like SAE makes a big difference.” He spent 25 years in leadership for SAE before fate took him on a harrowing journey. In January 2018, Frank went for his annual physical exam and his primary medical doctor discovered some irregularities. After months of blood tests, doctors gave Frank a life-altering diagnosis: Two aggressive and rare blood diseases – myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms - unclassified (MPN-U). Doctors predicted Frank would live just 14 more months. Frank’s only hope for a cure was a stem cell transplant from a matching donor. Blood disorders and cancers originate from the marrow of the bones, a spongy center that contains stem cells, which are the building blocks for infection-fighting white blood cells, oxygen transporting red blood cells and clot-forming platelets. A stem cell transplant replaces a patient’s unhealthy blood-forming cells with a donor’s healthy ones.

36

“I REALIZED HOW MANY OF MY OLDEST FRIENDS ARE FRATERNITY BROTHERS... IF YOU GO TO A UNIVERSITY OF 30,000 STUDENTS, HAVING SOMEPLACE YOU BELONG LIKE SAE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.”

Frank and his wife, Nancy at Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s 165th Anniversary Convention.

Many hospitals are hesitant to order a transplant for older patients in their 70s. But Frank didn’t have any comorbidities, and he was in great shape physically and mentally. Every ounce of health was needed because a marrow or blood stem cell transplant is complex for patients, requires an aggressive regimen of chemotherapies, and has potentially lethal complications if an ideal match is not found.

A SWA B FO R A W I L L I N G S T U D E N T Bettina remembers the day she joined the German stem cell registry. It was August 21, 2016 – her 22nd birthday – and she was visiting an amusement park in Germany, dressed as Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.” She and her boyfriend enjoy cosplay - dressing as movie or cartoon characters. Little did she know that by swabbing her cheek on this day, she would be able to tame the beast of blood cancer that threatened to ravage an SAE brother’s body. “There was a table set up at the entrance and I didn’t think much about it,” Bettina said. “I was just going to do it – everyone who registered was given a free ticket to return another time, so I didn’t think much about the decision to swab my cheek.” Two years later, in 2018, she received a call. She was a match for a man in the United States. Bettina readily agreed to the donation, which would end up being delayed twice over several months because back in the states, Frank was battling serious infections as a result of his immunocompromised body. She donated in 2019; her blood stem cells were hand carried by a courier onto an airplane and flown to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Bay Florida, arriving just hours before they would be infused into Frank via a catheter on September 5, 2019 – his re-birthday! “The one thing I always thought about is if I was sick or I was suffering from cancer I would want someone to save my life,” Bettina explained. “I would hope for someone to donate for me – so if I can do it, if I can get registered and donate, that’s what I should do because that’s what I would want if I was sick.” The donation process was simple, according to Bettina, who gives blood several times a year.

Frank’s Donor, Bettina Ripple and her fiance

SAE • THE RECORD • SPRING 2022

There are two ways to donate blood stem cells. The most common process, ordered by a patient’s doctor 85 percent of the time, is a peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) extraction through a nonsurgical process called apheresis, which resembles a plasma donation. The donor receives a series of injections five days in advance of donating to stimulate the production of stem cells. The donation process itself is not painful; it simply requires a few hours for the volume of stem cells to be collected from the donor’s blood stream. About 15 percent of the time, doctors will order a marrow extraction, which is a 37

A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE

surgical procedure performed under anesthesia. Liquid marrow is extracted from behind the hip bones, and donors report soreness following the procedures for approximately three weeks. Marrow donation is most frequently requested for pediatric patients to help reduce complications for the youngest cancer warriors. Bettina donated PBSC via the nonsurgical process. “I felt quite good,” she said. “It was a long day – it took about six, seven hours, but I was back to work the day after.” Bettina teaches kindergarten and serves as her school’s headmaster – a position she loves. Today she is four years postdonation, and while she considers Frank’s cure from disease a miracle, she doesn’t consider herself a hero. Bettina says she didn’t do anything significant that required much effort on her part – and she doesn’t expect anything in return.

PR E C I O U S T I M E Learning you have cancer is a life-changing experience, according to Frank. He and his family were no strangers to tragedy. Frank lost his first wife Nancy to lung cancer on Mother’s Day in 2014; six months later, one of his young sons died; he was 37. Having witnessed the fragility of life made Frank want to fight harder to enjoy more precious time with his children, grandchildren and his new wife, also named Nancy. Frank’s family rallied around him, recognizing the long odds of a cure. He brought his sense of humor to the fight. Before his 75th birthday in December 2018, he had custom rubber duckies created and floated 250 of them in a pool with the words “Happy Frank” imprinted on them. Frank would later award these rubber ducks to staff at Moffittm, because Frank realized these were the people whose care and decisions gave him the best chance at surviving.

“THE PERCENTAGES WEREN’T IN MY FAVOR, BUT IT WAS THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY I HAD TO CONTINUE TO SEE MY FAMILY AND ENJOY SUNRISES AND SUNSETS, WHICH I WANTED TO DO.”

“The percentages weren’t in my favor, but it was the only opportunity I had to continue to see my family and enjoy sunrises and sunsets, which I wanted to do,” Frank said. “When you go through this transplant experience, it’s a trip and challenges your stamina. I had to live day to day and not worry about the eventual outcomes – I put my life in the hands of my doctors.” Frank admits that during such an uncertain time, he didn’t spend much time thinking about the donors who give life to patients like him. Frank needed 57 blood transfusions to keep him alive during his battle. He now reflects with gratitude on the selflessness of blood donors who helped his fight, as well as the young woman who would eventually save his life. Frank has slowed down his pace of life, but he continues to support his SAE brothers by attending conferences and continuing to mentor young men. He remains grateful for the lifelong friendships he has made through the fraternity. He realizes relationships are more important than achievements, sunrises and sunsets marking each extra day he has been gifted with his family a blessing. “I spend more time talking to people instead of worrying about my golf game,”

SAE • THE RECORD • SPRING 2022

Frank said. “I enjoy riding my bike, swimming in the pool, reading, boating and fishing. When I was younger, I was focused on my business; my wife handled everything at home. But now I’m learning how to be a partner in the kitchen and the garden.” Frank’s appreciation for life is contagious – and he sees beauty in each new day. He and Bettina exchange correspondence regularly, and the two hope to meet in person one day.

SA E B R O T H E R S B E C O M I N G L I F E SAV E R S In July 2021, SAE partnered with Be The Match to engage members of its national chapters in registry drives to add more young, healthy, and willing donors to the national registry. Doctors most often request younger donors to help patients like Frank because younger donors lead to more successful outcomes for patients. In addition, young men produce a higher volume of stem cells, which also contributes to the success of the transplant.

An active Fraternity man, Isakson was a strong advocate for Greek-letter organizations in Washington, D.C., and proudly supported his local Greater Atlanta Alumni Association. For his professional success and bringing positive recognition to the Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon bestowed Isakson with The Highest Effort Award in 2015.

JAMES W. SUNDERLAND (CINCINNATI ‘49) Brother Sunderland entered Chapter Eternal on December 15, 2021. After his first gift of $100 in 1975, he went on to be one of the top donors in the history of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, eclipsing over $400,000 in donations to the SAE Foundation. At the time of his passing, Sunderland was the 4th highest living donor and 11th all-time. He spoke highly of his lunches with Past Eminent Supreme Archon Brad Cohen (Arizona ‘85) and proudly supported the Fraternity throughout his life.

MITCH STONE’S AT CINCINNATI BY: CODY DELMENDO (EASTERN ILLINOIS ‘13)

EVERY YEAR, BROTHERS OF ALL AGES ACROSS THE REALM UNFORTUNATELY ENTER CHAPTER ETERNAL. THAT’S THE UNFORTUNATE TRUTH FOR UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI ALUMNUS AND BROTHER MITCH STONE (CINCINNATI ‘20). SHORTLY AFTER GRADUATING IN 2020, MITCH, SOMEONE WHO SPENT HIS ENTIRE LIFE BATTLING HEALTH ISSUES, DIED IN HIS SLEEP AT 23 YEARS OLD ON JANUARY 21, 2021 AS A RESULT OF A SEIZURE.

MITCH STONE’S LEGACY AT CINCINNATI “It was really tough,” Brother Nick Albers said. “From talking to guys, a lot of them said that Mitch was arguably the closest person they knew that passed away, myself included. A lot of guys took it very hard.” “It was really shocking that it happened,” Dee Stone, Mitch’s mom said. “He just seemed so healthy, except for the seizures, but I never in a million years thought that he could die from a seizure.

He was so healthy in every other way.” Mitch was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009. After brain surgery and 32 doses of radiation, Mitch was adopted by the Cincinnati Bearcat Football Team through a foundation that matches pediatric brain cancer patients with athletic teams. As Stone underwent his chemo treatments and long stays at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, a special bond between him and the team was formed. Travis Kelce and the Bearcats were inspired and went on to have a perfect regular season with a 12-0 record and a trip to the Sugar Bowl. By season’s end, Mitch was cancer free, too. The relationship between Mitch and the Bearcats continued for many years as they teamed up through Playdate with the Bearcats, Mitch’s Mission signature event, to raise funds to send kids with cancer to camp. Mitch’s Mission is a non-profit at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s Cancer 68

and Blood Diseases Institute. The organization raises funds to help fund treatment for children with cancer or blood diseases. The Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute holds a summer camp for one week at Camp Joy located north of Cincinnati. One hundred patients and a sibling get to experience the joys of summer camp each year, no matter how medically fragile they might be.

“HE ALWAYS STOOD OUT TO ME... HE ALWAYS TOOK IT ONE STEP FURTHER,” BICK SAID. “HE DIDN’T KNOW ANY OF US, BUT HE WAS INCLUSIVE TO EVERYBODY AND HE WASN’T EVEN IN SAE YET.”

Mitch left a legacy not only at the Cincinnati chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, but a lasting mark on the University of Cincinnati. Today, the chapter has a memorial dedicated to him in their Alumni Room of the chapter house. They’ve also created an award known as the Mitch Stone Brother Hero Award, which is given to an active brother who demonstrates the characteristics Mitch did such as selflessness and kindness.

M I T C H , T H E B E A R C AT A N D TRUE GENTLEMAN Mitch grew up in Cincinnati and easily could have remained close with friends from high school or anyone else he already knew, but he wanted to meet new people. “He wanted just the opposite,” Dee said, “That’s why he came to me and said he wanted to join a fraternity.” When Mitch was a freshman, he was

attracted to SAE fairly quickly, and it was because of Jake Bick ‘15 and his love for Bearcat Football. Jake and his family have been season ticket holders for the Bearcats since he was five years old. He remembered Mitch’s story when the 2009 team went on to its undefeated season. “He definitely stuck out differently than other people in his class,” Bick said. “It was great because I remembered his cancer story. It’s crazy how it all transpired.” Mitch was Jake’s ‘little brother’ when he joined SAE in fall of 2017. Jake was on the recruitment committee when Mitch went through rush.

“He always stood out to me for some reason. He always took it one step further,” Bick said. “He didn’t know any of us, but he was inclusive to everybody and he wasn’t even in SAE yet. Even when he was a new initiate, he was there at the house, every Sunday watching football or Bearcats basketball. Whatever it may be, you could always catch him in our alumni room watching games.”

“He was just so genuine. Every conversation I ever had with Mitch was genuine. He genuinely cared about you and was a great all around person.” Mitch treated Saturday’s in the fall similar to folks who go to church on Sunday. If the Bearcats were playing at home, you would find him at Nippert Stadium, and if you weren’t there with him, he would let you know he wasn’t happy about it. “You didn’t want to get on his bad side,” Bick chuckled. “He was small but he had a big voice. If you weren’t going to the games, he’d look down on you like you were scum of the earth.” “There was a group of 10 of us that would leave the tailgates early and go to the game. Mitch was always one of them. He was always on time, and he was in the stands by the time the team ran out on the field. It was awesome, and I knew I could count on him to go out and go with me because I was the same way,” Bick said.

Ironically the Bearcat Football team had its best season in school history in 2021, earning their first-ever spot in the playoffs. Perhaps Mitch’s spirit swayed the college football playoff committee in his own way from above. “I talked to Mitch’s brother at the homecoming tailgate this year and he looks at me and goes, ‘Jake, if Mitch was here right now he’d be smiling ear to ear. You know if we make it to the college football playoff, you know it’s a sign from Mitch pulling some strings.’ It’s something special seeing how it played out now,” Bick said. “In my mind, without a doubt. There were so many games they should have lost. They were that close,” Dee said. “I’d throw up a little prayer to Mitch and next thing you know they win the game. Yeah, he was with us that whole season. A lot of those wins, you know, I think he was part of that.”

Cincinnati, but nonetheless, very famous Cincinnatiians are on these walls. Then you walk on the other side and there's this whole memorial dedicated to Mitch. It was incredible. It left us speechless. To see it all and to see the thought they put into it, the effort and kindness. We didn’t really see it coming.”

THE KITCHEN If you were a member at Cincinnati chapter during Mitch’s time as an active brother, you probably conversed with him in the house kitchen once or all the time. Bick described the house kitchen as the place he caught up with Mitch most during the week. Their conversations were always genuine and while it may seem like nothing special, Mitch’s mark left on the chapter was dedication to getting to know each and every person. “That kid was such a little dude, but he could put back some food, I’ll tell you what,” Bick laughed. “He lived in that kitchen, it was funny how he was always there.”

This past season, the chapter started a new tradition called ‘The Mitchey,’ which is where SAEs, friends, and family walk together after a tailgate to Nippert Stadium in honor of Mitch because of his love for the Bearcats. “The support we got from the chapter was phenomenal,” Dee said. “When you walk into the Alumni Room and see some really famous alumni, you know, names of people that we know because we’re from

“Despite the fact he was one of the smallest guys in the chapter, he was in the kitchen like four times a day cooking up these crazy meals and just eating them all,” Albers said. “That’s where he got to connect with all the guys,” Dee said. “I don’t think it’s all about the food. Mitch genuinely liked to talk to people. Mitch was a very good listener. When he asks you a question, he really wants to know the answer.”

W H AT M A D E M I T C H S PE C I A L

“IF YOU NEEDED HIM, HE’D BE THERE. HE WAS ALWAYS SOMEONE YOU COULD RELY ON,” Mitch remembered his experience through recruitment and wanted future members to feel the same way he did as well. “It’s amazing how kind and caring he was,” Albers said. “As you get older, some guys typically distance themselves from the chapter because of class or stuff like that, but he was there for every single recruitment event and just genuinely wanted to learn about every single guy that he could because he cared so much about the chapter.” .

70

“If you needed him, he’d be there. He was always someone you could rely on,” Bick added. “He rarely missed chapter meetings, and if he did, he always wanted to know what he missed.” After going through a life-changing experience with brain cancer, Mitch did not take life for granted. He appreciated everything he was given. Whether it was just seeing a dog on campus or a joke told by a professor in class, Mitch took those moments and loved to tell friends, family, and brothers about it. “Mitch found pleasure in literally anything,” Albers said. “He thought that anything, no matter how small it was, was the coolest thing ever or somehow story worthy, so, he’d stop guys in the kitchen and tell them about this random thing that happened throughout his day and it would just put a smile on your face seeing how happy it made Mitch.”

M I T C H ’ S L E G AC Y The legacy he left at Cincinnati is one that will live on forever. When Mitch attended Cincinnati he was named a Kolodzik Business Scholar, which are honor students who have gone above and beyond in their field of interest at Cincinnati. Outside of his involvement with SAE, he participated in UC Dance Marathon, a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research. In 2019, the organization raised over $72,000 for Cincinnati Children's Hospital. His passing was mourned by many. Most remember him as kind, genuine, resilient and funny. Mitch’s legacy of serving others lives on through his mission to ‘send a kid with cancer to camp’. “We miss him everyday. That is for sure,” Dee said. “But we just try to hang on to all the Mitch stories.” On the first anniversary of his passing, his family and friends had a get together at the Stone residence where everyone gathered around and told stories about Mitch. “We were blessed to have him as long as we did,” Dee said. “He could have died when he was 11 years old. The fact that we got him for another 12 years is a gift. We just try to look at it from a different perspective.”

NEW HOUSE, RENEWED LEGACY

BY: JOHNNY SAO (MILLIKIN ‘11)

hapter houses are a cornerstone of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity experience for those fortunate enough to have one. While Ritual binds us philosophically, these buildings are physical representations that connect Brothers past to present and beyond. The structures are as much of a chapter’s identity as its members and serve as a beacon welcoming both alumni and collegiates home. The University of South Dakota chapter (South Dakota Sigma) was chartered in 1911 as Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s 101st chapter. Its first house was built that year and stood until the mid-1960s when the second house was constructed. It was modern and cutting edge at the time of its construction, but nearly 60 years later, not so much. All chapter facilities go through simple renovations and upkeep; it’s simply part of having a house. But some issues are more significant and more persistent than others. Boiler issues and outdated widows prevented the house from keeping warm during the frigid South Dakota winters. Several electrical and fire-safety modernizations prevented the building from keeping to code.

When multiple repair needs arise concurrently, decisions need to be made. A renovation was estimated to be upwards of $1.5 million dollars. With conversations starting as early as 2012, it became apparent that the best investment would be in a completely new house. By 2015, the house corporation organized a committee with alumni who had experience in construction and house management.

Embarking on this project connected multiple generations of gentlemen from South Dakota. Doyle Knutson (South Dakota ‘71) and Steve Sikorsi (South Dakota ‘64) spearheaded the capital campaign and acted as project managers for the 3 million dollar goal to build a new house. Mark Ibis (‘86) managed the daily meetings with the South Dakota Sigma House Corporation, and Chip Ross (‘86) headed the fundraising committee. They met regularly with the chapter collegiate to ensure that both undergraduate and alumni visions aligned. It wouldn’t be a construction project without hurdleslike parking and zoning regulations that prevented and delayed construction. Alpha Xi Delta, who was also trying to build a new facility, was able to get laws changed to allow their house to be made, paving the way for the new SAE house to also be built. The new building was constructed in the old parking lot, and the old building plot became the new parking lot.

The new facility was reopened in the fall of 2020 with fanfare and delight from all members of South Dakota. It is outfitted with modern technology and spacious areas—including a full kitchen and dining area, volleyball court, and covered grilling area. The goal of having a safe, energy-efficient facility that preserved the chapter’s heritage and tradition of common means was completed. They even used wood from the old house to make a beautiful table for meetings in the new house.

FOUNDATION DONOR SPOTLIGHT: EDWIN D. FULLER (BOSTON ‘68) BY: JENNIFER BYRD-ALVARADO The museum at the Levere

Memorial Temple is home to many artifacts. Among the pieces are items like the shovel used at the building’s groundbreaking ceremony in 1929, Lucy Pattie’s original headstone, William C. “Billy” Levere’s YMCA uniform from World War I, and the Deagan Tower Chimes player. Artifacts, photos, and documents treat visitors to the rich history of the Temple and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation recently created an exhibit at the Temple to honor and thank past Foundation Chairman Edwin D. Fuller (Boston ‘68). Ed is a devoted supporter of the Foundation, serving on the Board of Trustees for ten years. Ed served as Chairman of the Board for seven of those years and still serves as a Trustee Emeritus providing valuable counsel. He is a Ruby Level donor ($100,000-249,999) in the Founders’ Circle, a giving society for individuals with over $5,000 in lifetime giving. He is also a 2021-2022 Archon Level donor, recognizing annual donations over $5,000 to the Annual Loyalty Fund. Ed graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business administration. As a collegiate member, Ed served as his pledge class President, his chapter’s Eminent Treasurer, and as Editor of the Beta Upsilon chapter’s Flight of the Phoenix publication. In addition to his official roles within the chapter, Ed’s interest in travel allowed him to act as the unofficial travel agent for his collegiate brothers. His longtime friend and fellow Foundation Trustee, Bob Watts (Boston ‘68), recalls when Ed organized a road trip to Florida for Bob and another brother in 1967. As they

traveled from Boston to Miami, they stopped at SAE houses along the way. Remembering the trip, Bob said, “Ed has always been interested in the travel industry; even in college, if any brother wanted to take a trip, Ed would research it for us and provide travel, sleeping, and social activities.” After graduating, Ed enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1968 to 1971 with posts in Germany and Vietnam. Following his service in the military, Ed followed his passion for the travel industry and joined Marriott, where he spent 40 years. Of his many roles within the company, he spent 22 years of his distinguished Marriott career as President and Managing Director of Marriott International and four years as Chief Sales and Marketing Officer. Under Ed’s leadership, Marriott opened 534 properties in 73 countries, created 80,000 jobs, and generated $8 billion in revenue. After retiring from Marriott, Ed co-founded Laguna Strategic Advisors, a consulting group where he currently serves as President and consults clients on global business development and hospitality leadership. In addition to his work as a leader in the hospitality industry, Ed is also an accomplished author. In 2011 he published his first book, You Can’t Lead With Your Feet On the Desk, followed by three titles in the Red Hotel series, with a fourth book scheduled to hit shelves in 2023. Additionally, he served as a board member for various organizations and foundations over the years.

The Ed Fuller exhibit at the Temple includes snapshots of Ed’s remarkable life and career - memorabilia, copies of his books, and several of his military awards, including his Bronze Star, received in Vietnam and Army Commendation Medal. There are also photos of Ed’s personal and professional life, including one of the Fuller family, which features Ed and his wife, Michela, with their children Scott and Elizabeth, their son-inlaw, Alex, and their two grandchildren, Cameron and Nolan. SAE’s second-highest honor, the Merit Key award, is among Ed’s many achievements and accolades. The Supreme Council awarded the Merit Key to Ed at the 159th Anniversary Convention in 2015, recognizing his meritorious service to the Fraternity. Steve Mitchell, President and Chief Executive Officer of the SAE Foundation, said, “He successfully navigated the political waters of establishing the Foundation as an independent entity. He worked with the Board to create new bylaws and brought both a cadence and a new level of SAE • THE RECORD • SPRING 2022

professionalism, enabling us to become even more successful,” when speaking of Ed’s accomplishments as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The Foundation hopes to inform visitors about the distinguished life and career of Ed Fuller through the exhibit. The organization is forever grateful to Brother Fuller for his loyalty and support over the years. In addition, the Foundation will continue to offer new and exciting content to the museum by adding donated historical items and highlighting individual members, chapters, and the organization’s current successes.
