Why should we blaze a trail when the well-worn path seems safe and so inviting?
— Jonathan Larson

Jonathan Larson was a visionary whose legacy transcends mere artistic achievement; he epitomized rebellion and trailblazing in the world of musical theatre.

At a time when Broadway was saturated with what he termed “plastic imitation 50’s bubble-gum Broadway megamusicals”, Jon fearlessly challenged the status quo.

Through his work, he thrust into the spotlight characters and narratives often side-lined by society, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by marginalized communities.

Additionally, Jon’s decision to infuse his work with a rock musical score not only appealed to a younger, more diverse audience but also defied the conventions of musical theatre as a genre.

Sight Lines shares Jon’s commitment to breaking barriers and making theatre accessible to all. We’re thrilled to present his autobiographical piece, tick, tick... BOOM!, about chasing one’s dreams and never giving up.

Our production expands upon Jon’s original “rock monologue”, enlisting an ensemble to amplify his iconic music and inspirational narrative. Through this performance, we aim to honour his legacy and spark meaningful conversations about the human experience.

As a longtime admirer of Jon’s work, I feel extremely lucky and blessed to be able to collaborate with such an exceptionally talented company in bringing tick, tick… BOOM! to life. I hope our new production will resonate with you on a personal level, igniting conversations about the pursuit of dreams and the resilience of the human spirit.

Enjoy the show!

Jon showcased his one-man show Boho Days (now tick, tick… BOOM!) here in response to the “large and expensive cast” issue that producers raised with Superbia.

JONATHAN LARSON’S APARTMENT

THE KITCHEN

The iconic old NY apartment where there was a shower in the kitchen. Jon wrote about this in the song No More.

We were given exclusive access to tour Jon’s apartment which is now home to a film actress based in New York. The “Then” photos are from the Netflix film, a recreation of the original apartment, shot on location at 508 Greenwich Street. THEN

THEN

THE BEDROOM

Jon did not have the money to afford central heating in his apartment and at some point brought in an illegal gas heater which he wrote about in the song No More.

THE LIVING ROOM

This was where Jon wrote all his music, hosted friends and rehearsed his shows.

Jon shares this in his opening monologue in the film.

now THEN now

No more noxious flames from gas heaters that are illegal or will blow up while you are sleeping.

I have 2 keyboards, a Macintosh computer and an impressive collection of compact discs, cassettes, and records of other people’s music.

The Story of Our Name

A sight line is a technical theatre term that refers to a clear line of sight between the audience and the stage. It is a concept that underscores the importance of ensuring every audience member can witness the magic happening on stage, unencumbered by any barriers.

As a theatre company, we believe that the magic of theatre lies in its power to connect. Just as a sight line ensures an unobstructed view, we, too, strive to break down the barriers that separate us from our audience.
