Reading/Listening are firstly all about understanding the gist; having a general understanding of the text, before understanding specific details. It’s most important to identify the words you understand, before working out the words that you do not from the context. Therefore, guessing meaning is vital.
Speaking is about expressing meaning fluently, using language that you know i maginatively. Giving your opinion freely is important, but using the correct pronunciation and intonation are paramount.
Writing is about expressing meaning accurately, using language that you know imaginatively. Giving your opinion freely is important, but using the correct vocabulary and grammar are paramount.
Translation is all about conveying precise meaning, not necessarily word for word. Accuracy of the language is vital. Therefore, a good knowledge of vocabulary and grammar is paramount.
