As a parent/carer of a child who has recently joined secondary school, you will already be familiar with the work of a PTA (Parent Teacher Association) in a primary school setting. As you know, funds raised through the PTA support the purchase of much-needed extra resources for schools which, in turn, have a hugely positive impact on the learning experience of students.

Secondary schools like ours also rely on extra funds raised by a PTA to supplement our budget and give students the best possible learning experience. The Sidmouth College Association (SCA) have funded items such a camera for Drama, instruments for Music, various Science equipment including a refurbishment of a lab, Dictaphones for Modern Languages, a dual purpose triple jump/long jump pit and kit for PE, visiting speakers for various workshops and lectures, books for humanities, furniture of the Sixth Form common room and much, much more.

After many years key members of the SCA handed over their duties to a new committee in September 2014. 2015 heralded the 50th Anniversary of Sidmouth College and to celebrate this the new committees first event was a celebration of 50 years disco. This was a successful start to the new committee and raised £1000. This committee have also been able to raise funds for various projects including £4000 towards a science refurbishment, £1000 towards software for the Sixth Form, new display boards, money towards funding the husbandry project and funding for activities week workshops.

Our SCA Committee is a well-promoted, fundraising body, forming strong links with students, staff, parents and the local community. However, we do now need more parents to step forward and give their support. If you can spare as little as 1 hour every half term, you can still make a valuable contribution which would be very much appreciated. Alternatively, if you have any fresh ideas that you would like to contribute, without becoming a committee member, we welcome your contribution. The more people we have who are willing to contribute just a little of their time and ideas, the bigger the difference we can make for your children.

It’s widely recognised that the more involved parents are in their child’s education, the better the child performs at school. When your children are at primary school, it is generally much easier to get involved. Chances are, you dropped off and picked up your child from school every day, giving you the opportunity to have a word with a teacher and to meet other parents. However, by the time your child reaches secondary school they are more independent and, as teenager status kicks in, often less communicative too! As well as playing a valuable role in raising funds for the College to pay for resources, being a member of the SCA will give you the opportunity to:

    

Work in partnership with the College Meet staff and other parents socially See first hand how money raised is benefitting your child’s education Be part of a team working together hosting a variety of events Discuss College policies and other matters of interest

Our committee meetings are usually held on a Wednesday evening, in the conference room from 6:30pm for approximately 1 hour. These are a minimum of 1 meeting each half term, increasing in the run up to an event. We are regularly planning forthcoming events for the current year and any ideas are welcome. If you are unable to attend meetings, but are willing to offer assistance at events, this would be very much appreciated. Please come along and meet us for a no obligation chat about the work of the SCA and to find out whether you would like to get involved.
