Technical Cadets 2018 Induction Ceremony Booklet Draft

Brief History of Technical Cadets

In March of 1990, the Government agreed, in principle, to the establishment of the Technical Cadet Corps Programme (TCCP) for students entering the tenth grades of Secondary Schools. The idea of the programme arose out of an awareness of the need for the creation of a pool of skilled young persons, who would be equipped to adequately and effectively address the employment demands of the future. The Government recognized the need to transfer to our young people, entry level skills which would enable them to be productively employed when they leave school or fundamental skills for further tertiary level education.

The Programme presently falls within the portfolio of the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, with the full sponsorship, involvement and funding of the following corporation: Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC), The Water & Sewerage Corporation, Bahamas Telecommunication Company (BTC) and the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (ZNS) .

The curriculum of the programme is geared towards training students firstly in the technical areas in which the sponsoring corporations specialize. Cadets will be exposed to such areas as: Electronics, Electricity, Water Testing & Treatment and Broadcasting. Secondly cadets will be exposed to general Engineering and Technology careers of the Bahamas. It is felt that out of this programme participants could emerge with the potential for higher education and training.

Technical Cadet Corps Programme

Ministry of Education

The Technical Cadet Corp Programme has served to inspire and motivate young Bahamian students through corporate sponsorship and technical education to close relevant skills gaps within the country.

The Programme provides students with the opportunity to acquire skills that can provide a foundation for them to become future leaders in the fields of engineering, telecommunication, water/wastewater and broadcasting.

Since the inception of the Technical Cadet Corps Programme in September 1990, Bahamian students of both Public and Private High Schools in New Providence have been exposed to the foundational intricacies of the Technological World. The success of the programme is marked by its 28 years of longevity and the many successful graduates that have found meaningful employment even up to managerial positions in the Sponsoring Corporations and the Bahamas workforce in general.

Our country requires competent, well-trained and innovative technicians in order to facilitate development and meet the needs of our country in an ever-changing global society. I therefore wholeheartedly thank the various partners such as the Bahamas Power and Light, Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited, the Water and Sewerage Corporation and the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas for your consistent support for more than two decades.

Technical Cadets, as you are inducted here this evening representing your various schools and families, I implore you to be cognizant that you will gain invaluable knowledge and skills to equip you to become excellent engineers/technicians in the future. I encourage you all to continue to perform at the highest calibre as you follow the path to become productive citizens of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Congratulations and best wishes in your journey with this programme.

We at the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (BCB) are very pleased each year to see another cadre of young Bahamian men and women who wish to become a part of the Global Telecommunications Industry.

As the national station grows and develops in new areas, we believe that our advancement benefits those who participate in the Technical Cadet Corps Programme (TCCP), giving them even more advantages than those who were part of the Programme in the past.

We at the BCB are looking for Cadets who already have a preference regarding the specific area in which they would like to become proficient so that we can better assist them, as well as cross-training them in other sections of the Corporation. Everyone at the BCB looks forward to sharing their knowledge with the cadets, giving them the benefit of not only their depth of experience, but also their dedication to and love for this profession.

BCB is dedicated to making a concerted effort to fully utilize the Cadets’ abilities and channel their passion into a viable, successful career path. We would very seriously like to employ even more of the Cadets in the coming years as we contribute to their training and education in this exciting and fulfilling industry.

As always, we are looking forward to the next group of young people coming through our doors, ready to start work in the broadcasting field that has always been and will always be an exciting life journey. Every aspect of this profession unites our people and joins them to the world as no other job can, while it challenges and rewards us every day.
