SPATIAL DESIGN SIDDHARTH

My name is Siddharth S P and I am an aspiring Spatial Design Practitioner based in Kerala. I have an undergrad in Public Space Design from Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore. As an artist and designer, I have always been fascinated by the idea of uniting both worlds by transforming abstract artistic ideas into usable physical space.

During my time in college, I have worked on spatial design interventions as well as interdisciplinary projects which have equipped me with the skills required to tackle any design brief. I am particularly good with hands-on work and have an eye for graphic design and illustration. I have done spatial design courses like cartography and mapping, sustainable architecture and street section redesigning along with interdisciplinary workshops like illustrating graphic novels, furniture joineries, sculpting, popup card making etc. This portfolio showcases projects ranging from spatial design, product design and graphic design, to clay work, illustrations and jewelry design. Apart from this I also have a passion for art and curation and I have worked at multiple exhibition spaces as an art reasearcher and guide.

Museum of Global Contemporary Art (2021)

SPATIAL DESIGN

The task was to study a chosen architect and design a contemporary art museum that could potentially fit into their body of work. This project is inspired by Toyo Ito and his concept of bridging the gap between built structures and their surroundings by creating relationships between them. I have attempted to follow his philosophy by introducing elements that mimic the topography of its environment, while keeping in mind his design language and use of materials. The design also looks at how a cultural building can participate in a larger role of ecological revival without compromising on its intended primary function.

Site: Loktak Lake, Manipur, India

Since Toyo Ito’s work does not follow any discernible visual trends, prominent lines from his previous works have been studied and contextually recreated.

The Panani Residence is a four story independant house built for Mr and Mrs Panani in Bangalore. The interiors are designed for a family of four. The client criteria for the kid’s room was to play with different textures of wood, keeping the color palatte relatively neutral with sage green accents. Designed as a forever home, the idea was to create a space that can grow and alter as the child does, catering to his needs at every stage.

Interpretation Centre (2021)

SPATIAL DESIGN

The task was to design an interpretation centre at Khandagiri based around Jainism. The interpretation centre is designed as an establishment that educates and inspires the public. The idea was to create a free-flowing dynamic space that can be used for many different purposes. The form of the structure is inspired by the “Gahuli”, which is a kind of rice artwork made on a wooden table in front of god.

Promenade Model (2019)

SPATIAL DESIGN

A 3D model made for a client who redesigned a promenade to prevent overcrowding. The pre-existing promenade was extended into the river and has features like a viewing deck, seating areas and small gardens. The important aspects of the design are done in full detail whereas the surrounding context is left bland. The river is represented using contours .

The Anganwadi Project (2020)

SPATIAL DESIGN

Tasked with redesigning a pre-existing Anganwadi to be more inclusive of its community, my idea was to transform it into a semi public space by bringing in an amphitheatre to bridge the gap between the community and the current users of the space. This ensures interaction between the two groups which in turn breaks down preconceived notions about anganwadi users.

Disability access points are one of the key elements in the design. The anganwadi is set into the ground with the amphitheatre above it, both of which can be accessed by means of stairs and ramps.

Artisan’s Escape (2020)

SPATIAL DESIGN

The idea behind designing the bazaar was to create a space that allows people from every layer of society to intermix and interact with one another. Centered around arts, the bazaar beckons to artists, musicians, performers, artisans and traders to come together in a display of talent and craftsmanship. The bazaar is a collection of semi-dome shaped structures fused together by a common roof that gives the illusion of the market place being a long curving tunnel.

Cliff House (2019)

SPATIAL DESIGN

Designing an open plan studio for the client taking into account their needs as a creative practitioner. The concept was to create a space that allows the client creative freedom to use any space in the house as a work area. One of the main features of the house is a lack of fully enclosed rooms which allows fluidity between spaces. A section of the ground floor bedroom opens out into the garden, providing more openness to the otherwise private space.

Sundarban Wildlife Sanctuary (2019)

SPATIAL DESIGN +ILLUSTRATION

Keeping the forest of the Sundarbans as the focus of intervention I redesigned the sanctuary, given that there are no constraints on expenses, materials and feasibility. Based on the theme for the project ‘Wildlife and Tourism’, the main aim of the venture was to bring tourism into the forest in such a way that it docks the ecological harm aspect of it without ridding the visitor’s experience of the wilderness. Since the structure was to be built in a utopian setting, I decided to stick with a comic strip format because I felt that it could help encapsulate the feel and experience of a space. The intent is to portray the impact of the intervention on the ecosystem and vice versa.

Level-up! (2022)

GAME+GRAPHIC DESIGN

Stemming from the idea of connecting with physical space by incentivising navigation with game objectives, this way-finding system for the new Srishti campus was designed with a layer of play incorporated into it. Along with an efficient system of navigation, the program involves gamifying the process of getting around to give the user added incentive to engage with the different facilities that Srishti provides.

Tekkeri (2022)

PACKAGING AND ILLUSTRATION

Keeping young adults as the main consumer group, ‘Tekkeri’ is a hard seltzer brand that is commited to creating high quality, hassle free drinks for those who’d like to imbibe yet stay steady. I was tasked with creating appealing packaging design that captures its quirky, laid back essence. Going with a literal take on the idea of being surrounded by flavour, I chose to illustrate little fruit houses.

Creatures of the Galapagos (2021)

PRODUCT DESIGN

‘Creatures of the Galapagos’ is a beginner’s guide to all the unique animals that inhabit the islands. Consisting of three separate layers, the map divides these organisms into aerial, aquatic and terrestrial. Each layer can be transcribed onto the contour map of the isles to locate the natural habit/highest frequency of said species. An additional layer indicates landmarks and tourist spots.

What’s in my way? (2021)

CHILDREN’S BOOK

An interactive children’s book based on a persona building exercise relating to the obstacles on the sidewalk of the Eranholi River-front. The extreme user in this scenario is a little girl who walks the path everyday on her way back from school. The narrative follows a series of obstacles that Chippi faces and how she sees them in her imagination as she overcomes each one.
