Tistilal Village a 58 unit apartment (63,000 sf), is new construction redeveloping a .96 acre (41,880 sf) site in Northwest Portland’s Portsmouth Neighborhood. This project takes a trauma-informed design approach targeting to serve Native American families, including those experiencing homelessness. The project includes a plaza, play area, seating and community gardens. Interior communal areas and supportive service offices will foster a trauma informed, community-focused setting for residents. The project site has direct bus access to the NAYA Family Center and three grocery stores within a short drive or bus ride.

Three buildings are of similar design with dwelling units arranged around central exterior “breeze-ways” with covered, exterior circulation and stairs. The fourth building is a double-loaded corridor building with ground floor amenities and management offices that serve the entire development. The buildings are arranged on site around landscaped areas, with site pathways, play areas, and a variety of areas for residents to enjoy. Rothert building is a renovation of a historic building located in North East Portland. Changes to the building included: ADA accessibility updates, seismic upgrades, new restrooms, an employee lunch room, common office space, private offices, new windows, a new grand staircase, two conference rooms, and a skylight.

Th building modernized to maintain its historic charm through the reuse of brick, existing wood, and various architectural elements. Worn elements were replaced with new equivalents that match the character of the original building. Sustainability improvements include new glazing, additional insulation, and daylighting provided through new windows and the addition of the skylight.

The challenge was to accommodate 4 different Administrative & Finance departments at IISc into a 40-year-old building, previously a lab/ workshop for the aeronautics department. The space needed to incorporate each departments’ requirements for large volume of file storage areas, cabins, staff cubicles, pantry, semi-open dining with appropriate services.

Some existing rooms were to be repaired and retained as officer cabins. There were 2 available open terraces and a mandate that only one can be covered however without casting a RCC slab.

Take a moment and recall your favorite childhood spaces. Most of us will be taken to a place outdoors. No matter where you grew up or the quality of your upbringing, you, as a human, are innately connected to nature and biologically will reach your greatest potential when your connection to the outdoor world is strong.

My thesis aims at integrating nature through biophilic design strategies into the built environment through modules to create an architectural catalyst in traditional neighborhoods of residential scale. The immediate urban context lacks community space thus this becomes the focus of the site. The central core acts as a flexible community space which turns into a vertical garden to later form the green roof. The roughness of the structure and materials complements the organic nature to strike a perfect balance. The public and private green spaces are connected through internal green walls to bring in nature.

Portland faces housing crisis every year with the increase in homelessness, this project looks at evaluating what type of homeless shelter the city needs. After carefully analyzing the cities condition on homelessness by interviews, precedent visits and case studies, it was apparent that a shelter with all amenities is necessity for families and particularly those with children. Thus the project focuses on a shelter that is kids friendly and family oriented.
