Designing an Architecture institute in the zone of existing institutions. With the site area of 10.5 Acres and dense vegetation on site, major aim for the design was to retain as much vegetation as possible and develop a design that responds to the students and users, which keeps drawing the inspiration from the structure.

Finding the potential spot between the context and mapping the potential zones for the activities. The red area shows the vegetation on site that kept untouched.

Creating a potential axial circulation with the concentration spots for placing the major activities. The site is divided into parts to manage the activities accordingly.

Maximum free pockets are mapped on site and activity placement is done considering all the criteria for circulation and place making.

The design plan is generated in the Academic, Administrative, Workshops and Labs, Auditorium and other areas. The circulation for the staff and the students is kept different to minimize the intersection and increase the interaction. Entrance for the students from west side with large porch and interaction spaces. Total layout is developed around four courtyards with the specific characteristics of each.

Various punctures are given on the first floor to give access to vertical interaction and make the space more dynamic in shape.

SECTION A 11.

First floor consist of masters studios and library. Library is provided with the large highted folded plate structure to make an ambiance of the space grand. Corridors on the first floor are kept short with specific interaction spaces to make interaction healthier with whole surroundings. Double heighted spaces are given on specific locations to increase the dynamics of the space. Auditorium with 600 capacity is given.

Studios are arranged in such a way that the interaction and the working conditions for the students stays near ideal. Material use is kept minimal to give students an example. Students Get inspiration from building at every point of time and to maintain that relationship, some design decisions are taken.

Design for a competition with an aim of creating a space on restricted area of 6x4m which we can call a home. Everyone is suffering from pandemic and home is the only place which maintained its identity over time.

Competition was a time problem of 7 days.

1.618033 serves a crucial purpose in forming the universe. It is observed in nature that, the clusters are formed according to the limited spaces with the golden ratio as the soul parameter. During any crisis, nature find its own ways to maintain the balance and integrity. Henceforth, the rules of very force of the creation are used for our own home.

Definition of the home is stripped down to the most basic fundamentals namely, TOILET and KITCHEN which includes all the basic activities one does in a day. Home is not a place its our people, it is defined where one can have a healthy interaction with the surroundings as well as the people.

The proposal is an integration of the future technology and the strategic space planning. Final proposal could be molded into numerous possibilities according the specific need, it uses the swarm technology and stack planting module to make it sustainable on its own for at least 3months. Privacy smart glass panels are used to generate electricity from sunlight and to maintain privacy

AVIKAL TEMPLE LANDSCAPE

In this exercise the temple vicinity was taken for landscaping. Area of 200 years old temple located on the confluence of two rivers and strong surrounding context. Proposal here, deals with enhancing the overall area while managing the seasonal crowd and maintaining it’s original value.

The design is derived from the site itself. To solve the problem of functions, existing zoning, circulation and topography is taken to advantage. Strict contours lines are created along the natural topography with OAT as a origin space, making site a whole of parts. Functionality of the spaces is decided according to the events happening around the year on the site. Materials used in design are the extension of the existing temple material and environment.

Large covered walkways given beside garden space for informal seating and eating. Spaces for ritual activities and daily routine of the temple are maintained on their respectve positions. Overall site gives the peaceful vibe throughout the year and make it vulnerable for large crowd.

Ghat space near temple is kept simple to promote the interactive activities. Use of materials is simple and as original as possible to temple origin to maintain the culture and values given by the temple.

Circulation on the site is the key to manage the crowd.

Designing a place of faith that act as a sanctuary for secular world. Physical manifestation of this idea is made using human mind. Human is a complex entity which can be understood very easily if we can join the dots properly, this ordered complexity is taken as major driver for the form development.

Complexity is one of the remarkable trait of the ordered human mindset, that can be very minutely seen. Once resolved it becomes the true essence of being sacred.

From Mindfully dwelling to Dwell mindful, humans have evolved over the period of time developing their own definition of being sacred, in pursuit of the intimate connection between body, mind and soul.

Going below ground and staying connected with self is achieved through the play of ight and the environmental temperature. The relatively cooler space stimulate the self connection. Rustic materials are used to divert people from the structure itself and aware them about their inner surroundings.

Designing and detailing the cladding for an architectural studio of size 11x18M. Major focus of the exercise was to develop a system with modular panels, space for electrical fittings and with all the technical considerations.

Structural system for the cladding is done in T/W with appropriate bracings for structural stablity. Structural joinery for the Panels is ‘slide in hook’ for modularity, with which the combination, colors and textures of the panel could be changed very easily. To create drawings, the whole studio is divided into four walls and into further sections considering the columns.

A system is developed to read the drawing in succession. First, the schedule for structural members with properly given number to each unique unit. Second, the schedule for members in elevation to get overall size of the unit. Lastly, the schedule of all the acoustic panels to be fitted on the structural system is given. The details of special section of member and panel is given separately for cutting separately. Fabric wrapped panels are used to make it acoustical and the fabric can be changed timely, increasing it’s modularity.

Documentation of one building from the Bishop Cotton school located in Nagpur.

Around 100 years old load bearing structure with TW king post trusses to support the roofing. Also the interventions are made into the structure to make it adaptable to current scenario of the school.

Building needed Various interventions to work more efficiently in the current scenario. Currently the building is used for small assemblies, functions and official works, but with no specific integrations of the functions. Interventions proposed are giving the modular partition to make space usable for different activities at a time. Also the building is provided with large steps which could be used by students for various activities.

As the central functional space of the entire school it was necessary to make this space a happening and efficient place. With over 100 years, values play a very important role while choosing the functions and materials for the interventions.

52 DESIGN THINKING

“DESIGN” To designate or set to serve a specific purpose (To assign), design is a best version of its aspect which serves the society at maximum efficiency. Designs made our life easier over a period of time, design is systematically planned input to get as close as to the desired output. Getting the desired output essentially mean, that it is an ideal design and humans have worked over 8000 years to acquire that idealness.

Design is a graph of inputs and outputs at different levels of social indices. Predicting the graph beforehand is a factor of success behind the design thinking. This seems invalid on small scale, but on larger social scale it is essential to predict the output. Design thinking is applied by the people who are trying to solve a social issue or sell a product or create something new in the market. Market is decided upon the type of project. In architecture the market, are the users and their surroundings. Larger the market, complex the design thinking would be. If a project is done without considering the users, most of the part of the design becomes invalid and only nonliving part remains to be designed.

Design thinking majorly depends upon two factors, the designer’s mind and the society. Society impairs the design thinking if not studied properly. Designer’s behavior and attitude decides the design thinking and its impact. Conditional working and situational responses are the major factors in design thinking as it requires steady mind and conscious sensible behavior of the designer.

Design thinking is also important in daily life to acquire the state of mind to tackle the problems fairly in relation to the society. The routine of the designer is the drive force for him to go through the journey of ideal designs.

Continuous process of positive design thinking and positive design approach makes a designer to follow an ideal path towards design. It creates empathy for himself and helps in understanding the design and people. Empathetic design thinking is also important in some cases to emotionally solve the problem to connect it better to the society.

Daily one hour of positive thinking towards design process would dramatically increase the chances of being a good designer. For the designer daily Design thinking routine is more important than his daily routine. Design is a game of gamblers, they risk their thoughts on society. One who learns the gambling in social dimension, is the one who can lead the idealness more accurately.
