CONCEPT DESIGN 3.0 INTIAL DESIGN (SPACE PLANNING) Looking at the initial spaces required for the building i decided to look at which spaces required access to the other spaces and how they would need to flow between as shown by the red dotted arrows.

The initial idea was to based the building off two floor and be one monlithic strucutre which spans the length of the tracks, with most of the exhibition and food serverary spaces on the gorund floor. The bridge would long the length of the structure to allows for access over railway station.

The first floor would used the remaining space to fit office space in along with the other half of the temopary exhibition space and storage for the exhibition.

CONCEPT DESIGN 3.0 INITIAL PHYSICAL MODELING After looking at the design initially in bubble diagram form i decided to move into physical masses by doing some physical models to get a grasp of scale and proportion of the building on the site. Initially looking at the site the idea to base the project over the track was the best idea as there is a range of factor that make it hard to base the project on either side of the railway. Basing the site over the tracks also creates a level platform which can built upon and a podium system could be implemented to do this.

FIRST ITERATION

After looking at the sketch model I decided it was best to a an physical idea of how the building will sit on the site and interact wth the surounding buildings and connection to other side of the railway (tram lines). Stiil looking at maintianing the flow and the journey experiences as you walk through the buildings.,

After looking at the model again i decided it was a good idea to create this overlying structure which would form a covered space but still open at the same time allowing for matural ventilion but providing a space which is partially sheild from the elements (wind, rain and direct daylight. The concept of the roof was drawn from inspriation from the WWF planet centre which has overlying roof structure.

SECOND ITERATION

After looking at the first iteration they design was a not as visually asthetical as originally desired so the shift to change these to more angled L shape buildings were used. With this design it also create one clear exit on the tram side rather than creating multipule entrance allowing to better control the flow of people round the space and buildings.

Still trying to keep with the theme of the overlying roof structure I decided to carry on with this idea and intergrte it in to my second design iteration. The current idea is to stop the roof at the eaves witrh a projected overhang rather than taking it down to the platform as there is minimal room on the platforms.

CONCEPT DESIGN 3.0 INITIAL DESIGN IN CONTEXT -

Following the idea of creating a flowing design in terms of pedestrian flow, the images and diagrams below show how the building would sit in context on the site and how pedestrian will flow from the city side to the park hill side shown by the range of green and yellow arrows below. The design that is to be presented at the interim week 5 review is option 3 as it provided a way of accessing the bridge externally it also provided a connection with the railway by creating voids in the space to give that visual connection form the space in the building to the imimate local suroundings.

Design In Context (Option 1) -

above show option 1 in context the plus side of this design is it still creates that flowing element that was desired from the start of the project.However does create confunsion due to the multiple pathways.

Design In Context (Option 1) -

The idea of creating connections round the diffrent building via a range of bridges suspended over the bridge. thsi idea is fesable but would required extensive strucutural design to make fesiable.

Design In Context (Option 2) -

Above show the building in context and how the lead up to the building (entrance) on the city side would create a ramped approach to allow for access to bridge level over to (aprk hill side).

Design In Context (Option 2) -

The pros of the design is it allows for 24 hour access to the bridge via a public access bridge and also show 2 clear points of exit (park hill side). However the exits need to be more refined to show clear point how the y will be supported and work with the scheme.

Design In Context (Option 3) -

In plan view the option shows how the space would be intended ot be used and how people would flow around site. One of the problem that many need to be addressed is how the void space cause a loop affect which is quite conter productive in-terms of flow.

Design In Context (Option 3) -

With option 3 it allows for a space in-between the walk ways providing a link between the building and suroundings and also provides clear access in form of a ramped approach to bridge and shows clear routes to tram stop.

DEVELOPED DESIGN 4.0 DEVELOPED DESIGN -

Continuing from the further design considerations shown previously the idea was to still to try to keep with this lineiar structure that runs perendicular to the train tracks and create a more simple design in terms of shape but still create the flow over the trainline. Also with the idea of thinking about the environmental consideration and where the building would be best placed to recive best heat gain or for cooling.

Developed Design In Context 1 -

After considering the comment from the week 5 reviews looking at the idea of creating a more linear structure that means having more of a block appearacne but does allow for a linear path from one side of the train track to the other.

Developed Design In Context 3 -

Looking into the development of this design and looking at how the space in-between the buildings will be used. The space next to the cafe could be used for lettable seating space or a viewing platform, the space next to the office could be used as a green space.

Developed Design In Context 2 -

The idea of moving the exhibition to the south side may cause some problems in term of overheating but does make logical sence as it would lead straight up from the street level entrance. The office has as hollow ground floor allowing pedestrans to go under and thrhuogh the space, the scheme has more of a concourse appearance.

The sketch above shows the bridge level plan and is an overlay of the a mass model that has shows a basic idea of where at will be located in each building and a start to look at space planning the spaces in the different buildings.

DEVELOPED DESIGN CONTINUED -

After looking into the design of creating a more linear structure that would fit the site better and would still create the interest level that are desired. The idea to go and have a look at the design of high streets and how they create this intemit space where it create social interaction rather than a cavernous open space which pedestrians typically stick to the side of the buildings leaving a open space that does not get used in the middle.

Sheffield Peace Gardens Discription The peace gardens are located in sheffield in south yorkshire, and is an urban landdsacaped area where multiple event and markets are held throughout the year.

Justification The space provides a place where multiple events can be held. As with the design of the intersection link building i endevoured to incorpate an space or element can be used for a green space or a ubran event space that could be used throughout the year.

Looking into the space in-between the office and the exhibition space and would the space would make good use for the space. As seen from the sheffield peace gardens it use an area where the space would be unused and crerates a social and usable area this is the idea for the space above.

The idea was to try out different idea of what the space could be used for as seen above the idea of using the space for an event space or as seen in (development in conext 5) a green space.

DEVELOPED DESIGN 4.0 STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF ROOF STRUCTURE Continuing the idea for devleopment of the roof/canopy structure the intital idea was to step the roof and weave the canopy structure round the builidngs, much like the design of south beach by foster and partners. The intial idea was to just base the canopy structure between the two space so it would become a prominate of a feature of the design asthetics.

Following the idea of creating a roof structure that overhng and weaves inbetween the builidngs the image above show the intial look the orginal idea was to step the canopy on every other canopy section to give more intrest to the scheme.

Above show the intial look of one of the canopy sections which would be use timber towards the back of the section to provide solar shading and rain screen cladding like slates towards the front to allow the wind through.

The view above show how the canopy structure would look in context to the rest of the scheme. Following the idea of stepping the canopy the idea was to keep more of a level canopy which still keeps that level of intrest but make the structre more fesiable and buildable.

DEVELOPED DESIGN 4.0 DEVELOPED DESIGN FOLLOWING STRUCTURAL ENGINEER MEETING After the meeting with the structural engineer from ARUP I took into consideration the comments they made and below shows the changes made to the structural design and showing the basic calculations made to estimate the sizes of the bridge deck floor structure that spans over the tracks.

After listening to what the strcutural engineer had to say i went back to have a look at the orginal structural proposal for the bridge deck and started to raitonlise the structure and remove un needed colums.

After looking at orginal plan view i amended the cloumn layout and resized the coulmn sizes to suit. The idea was also to realine the coulmns to prick up the grain of the buildings surounding.

After rationlising the columns for the bridge structure i went onto starting to look at the strucutre of the builidng and develop the primary building structure after calculating the beam sizes.
