I’m Shruti Shelar and I’m a Fourth Year Architecture student currently studying at VESCOA, Mumbai and this is a curated selection of my work from the previous three years.

The ability of architecture to provide meaning and develop a connection with the users while providing a sense of belonging to a space is what inspired me to take up the profession. I believe that design holds the power to define a space and the activities and follow.

I look forward to learning and experience working with professionals in the field, seeking opportunities and gaining practical knowledge.

01 BIOMIMICRY PAVILION, KOCHI SEMESTER 02

01 BIOMIMICRY PAVILLION, KOCHI May 2021 - Aug 2021 The site is located in the Aspinwall House, Kochi. The design brief asks for a Biomimicry inspired pavillion installation for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale which is an annual contemporary art festival. The pavillion acts as a pause point in the path of circulation and provides a space for exhibiting various artists.

The element of inspiration is a Dry Cactus Skeleton. Its property of having a strong lightweight networking structure has been studied and developed further to recived to formwork of the pavillion.

The design process was carried out through studying a series of scale models. Each model has been studied for its pros and cons, with respect to which the design was developed further.

“The Void” is a kinetic pavillion based on simple mechanical mechanisms giving a appearance of contraction and expansion through means of rotation of individual members.

The design evolution process was experienced to be highly helpful with understanding the mechanisms required as well as the spatial quality that is created. The pavillion is a framework structure in a spiral form which creates a defined path of circulation. The voids created allow passerbys to get a glimpse of the exhibit without a complete reveal. The framework also allows a clear flow of wind providing efficient ventillation.

The pavillion also pay homeage to the fishing community of Kochi, Kerala.

02 CRAFT GUILD, DELHI Sept 2021 - Dec 2021

The site is located near the Old Fort, Delhi. The craft guild is a space with provides a means of work and stay for the pottery community.

The guild comprises of defined workshops, workspaces, gallery areas, and living quarters.

The site planning is such that there is clear bifurcation of public, semi-public and private spaces. This is done by site landscaping and access points.

The architectural design includes the potters in the process. Making use of terracotta pieces to create a jali.

The art of pottery requires various spaces such as a dry area for material preparation, Clay molding area, Klin for baking of products, Engraving area, and a store for selling of finished products.

The design project is a science experience center located in Mumbai. The center consists of workshops, temporary and permanent galleries, and interactive spaces.

The Center will act as a place which displays the process and important achievements in the field of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.

Various strategies such as self-shading via staggering of masses, Curved form reducing heat gain, cross ventillation, parametric facade, Green wall panels for filteration of air, Terracotta water feature have been used.

The construction is done using steel members which allows for thinner sections and larger column free spaces. The steel constructions makes it possible to have a staggered structure.

A parametric relwood panel facade has been installed to the south facade. In this fenestration, the surface would be cladded with 20mm thick relwood panels of 400mm width. Each of these panels will be placed and designed according to the direction of the curved surface at the given point, as well as the direction of wind. The position of the twist along the length of the stip is based on the opening to the main wall behind it. At places where no opening is present the strip would not consist of the twist. The angle of twist would be such that the surface becomes parallel to the direction of wind, i.e. North -east or southwest.

The project is located within the kalina university campus, Mumbai. The aim is to have a user experience oriented design. This is done by creating a mix of spaces existing in unity to create an experience which would tend to drive the youth and crowd towards the center and encourage them to participate as well as choose to live a healthier lifestyle.

- Incorporating interior landscaping within the built forms to create a sense of liveliness - Having Soft Diffused natural light accessible to most spaces - Creating spaces of interest in the in between areas - Presenting a flow of spaces leading to the center - Promoting playing of sports for enjoyment along with competition - Helping create a healthy personality Inspired by Ar. Shigeru Ban’s style of creating roof structures using a timber framework which gives the factor of a column developing into the roof itself. Such as the applications in the center pompidou-metz in France and the nine bridges country club in South Korea. An attempt has been made to recreate this same technique using steel members. Using steel in place of timber makes the structure for environment friendly and light-weight construction. It also allows for thinner and larger span members.

Framework cover: translucent fiberglass and Teflon textile using this specific combination of materials allows diffused natural light into the interior spaces to an extent. This gives a warm and fresh ambiance to the spaces, especially the main circulatory atrium. To provide uniform lighting without and disrupting shadows to the badminton court an internal skin is applied beneath the framework maintaining the softness of the natural light without strong shadows.

05 INFOSYS HYDERABAD, HYDERABAD SEMESTER 06

05 INFOSYS HYDERABAD, HYDERABAD Sept 2022 - March 2023

As part of the Solar Decathlon India 2022-23 Competition, the Infosys Hyderabad campus has been designed. The main aim of the project was to integrate the technology and design to create a Net Zero Energy Water Building.

This has been done with the help of integrating passive strategies, Passive technology and integrative designing.

Ground Floor Plan

Two typical floor plans have been designed which get repeated and mirrored above each other. Each of the floor plans consists of a mix of various sized working spaces. Each of the workspaces have been planned making sure there is sufficient natural lighting and circulation space.

A common circulation core assures a well planned movement of users and distribution of crowd during peak hours.

Common break out areas have designed in each of the buildings with steel fabricated construction. Tower Ai.e the north tower has a dedication zone which includes a mix of various seating areas and activity zones.

These areas promote a healthy work enviornment allowing users to have a variation to the standard corporate work enviornment.

Green pockets have been created in each of the work spaces as well as the common areas. Voids have been cut into each of the floor spaces alllowing connectivity between spaces.

North - South Section Each of the breakout spaces has a facade composed of vertical coloured louvres which create a break in the finish and aesthetic as compared to the working spaces. Each of the panel can be manually and mechanically rotated to the users comfort.

06 MISCELLANEOUS 2021-2023

NASA MSL 2022 Dec 2022 The MSL Trophy focuses on redefining and reinventing an existing street and making it universally accessible to all and user friendly.

A study of the street has been carried out to understand the existing conditions and issues faced by the users at different times of the day.

For each of the issues a corresponding solution was proposed. This Included: - Wider and Even roads - Effective lighting based on green energy - Vibrant murals and Vertical Vegetation Panels - Redesigned Busstops and footpaths - Redesigned junctions and crossings

The attempt aims to provide a standard and replicable solution to such similar sites in Mumbai whilst imparting aesthetic values and a sense of inclusivity amongst all users.

During my tenure in the Student Council Publication Team, I’ve created and contributed towards various types of publications and graphic designing styles. It has helped me sharpen up my understanding and eased up my software skills. Through lading positions in several copetions and teams I believe I’ve developed leadership and management skills.
