BALLARD RE-IMAGINED

It delves into the exploration of thes intricate relationship between architectural form, functionalism, and the passage of time. In this context, the notion of building upon existing prefunctionality emerges as an appealing and rather sustainable alternative with Ballard Estate as the site.

The project evolves to understand the contextual factors that come into play affecting its form, while efficiently catering to the functions it houses. The vocational institute presents itself as a niche of comfort to the working class of the region, the institute acting as a place of learning, interacting and growing.

Site Location: Dadar, Mumbai

Site Area: 2300 sq.m

The site is located at the meeting point of crossroads acting as a NODE, in an area surrounded by famous landmarks of Mumbai, thus creating a junction of heavy vehicular traffic.

Located in Dadar amidst a culturally diverse and rich centre it has a lot of potential to be developed into a vocational institute for young minds.

VISUAL CONNECTIVITY

Courtyards and voids within the slab act as a medium to offer visual connectivity while causing a play of heights.

CREATING AN IDENTITY

The form evolves to create an identity through its bold geometrical features and materiality.

OPENNESS

The site junction has been opened up by removing a mass and thus offering transparency of the internal functions

ADDING GREEN

Adding internal and external green spaces so as to bring life within the space and also increase the productivty of its users.

Inferences from the understanding of chawl system of living have been taken and an attempt to create a socially interactive junction which forms the open visual point for the structure is proposed.

The proposal seeks to help the user feel a sense of belonging to the structure amidst the chaotic surroundings that the site is placed in.

COMMUNAL POINT

The site is located amidst stacks of slum settlements and high rise buildings around. The built would then act as a bridging point between two strikingly opposite builtforms, belonging to user groups of different economic stratas.

Brick Jaali pattern type 1: Used in the north east facade, it allows for northern light and wind to pass through the jaalis while giving intriguing light and shadow patterns within.

Brick Jaali pattern type 2: Used in the south east and south west facade. It allows for the south light to get deflected as the jaalis as placed perpendicular to the angle of sunlight.

Concrete louvers: Theses add to the space quality via the light infiltration in the space.

Green buffer given in the interior spaces helps the quality of interior space in many ways. It acts as a sound buffer also behaving as an obstacle for dust particles, which get filtered via the green buffer.

It acts as a thermal buffer allowing for diffusion of sunlight and not allowing the interior spaces to heat. It also offers a good visual as green promotes productivity, thus keeping the space lively.

Courtyard spaces gave rise to multiple void in the slab allowing for fresh air to flow within, also helping to keep the interiors cool, especially for a hot and humid climate like Mumbai.

Slabs interconnected via a lybrinth of staircases, forms a recreational area offering interactive, fun learning spaces. It also translates visual connectivity through out the junction of the built mass via its openness.

SECTION BB’

Spatial qualities brought via light, ventilaation and green is what defines Abode as an Educational Institure, where every users feels at home and connects.

The qualities of livlinesss, openess and transparency is brought into persepective at this junction opening, allowing the built mass to breathe inside out.

AMAZON is a fast growing and widely established company all around the world with most of its centre branches known for promoting green office spaces for the employees. As an attempt to house its philosophies via the look and feel of amazon offices abroad, the concept of INSIDE OUT, via blurring the boundaries of interior exterior surroundings is worked out.

CONCEPT

The design ideas involve an amalgamation of geometric patterns and green space architecture. Geometric rigidity is brought through grid patterns in the ceiling. Greenscape is added with a backdrop of concrete. Earthy tones are added through a vivid material palette.

An accent colour is added to stand out bold through the concretewalls of the space.

The planning is done such that entrance gives a view of an open plan workspace seperated by planters andnotsolidpartitionsmakingthespacelookbigger and livlier.

The proposal was to design a covid responsive school based in Gurgaon, Delhi which was evolved using the conceptual ideas of addition, subtraction and stacking of LEGO BLOCKs. Emphasis on the assembling properties of lego and the playfulness it adds is looked at and thus further used as a designing tool. Classroom blocks are made movable allowing for flexibility in its configuration. These properties make the nature of the campus playful and innovative.

The workshop was a journey to the design production of a cultural event. A study that expresses how ephemeral architecture is part of many artistic sectors: exhibitions, theatre, music shows, street events, etc. The aim was to design an ephemeral intervention which was done with hands-on works, using prefabricated packs (the scenic box). The design for the intervention was the work of different teams. As part of the Urban Design team we were required to study the requirements of emerging multidisciplinary cultural spaces, where different cultural activities could be implemented.

Cultural spaces are the soul of a neighborhood. In a world where work, eat, sleep, repeat- falls short in providing a fulfilling balanced life, cultural spaces come in. They cultivate a sense of community, where one feels like a part of something bigger than themselves.

Using urban mapping, we have attempted to study some of the cultural spaces of Madrid and how they impact the community around them. The spaces may differ in scale and as a result, in rigidity of structure and accessibility to creators and the community; but they all comply with a singular purpose of fulfilling the socio-cultural needs of society. Through personal visits and interviews, we tried to understand how each studio or gallery utilizes the available space and how it transforms as per the requirements of the user. By gaining familiarity with their work and process we analyzed some of their needs and how it can be fulfilled with a singular multi-functional product.

However, one common observation regarding the small scale and independent studios, was lack of community engagement. As a result, those spaces have become unknown or inaccessible to the community. We hope to address this by creating a map, marking out all the cultural spaces in a part of Madrid. The map available digitally and on brochures will act as a resource to not only tourists but anyone interested in yet unfamiliar with the art community of the city. We have also recorded our own experience of the spaces using illustrations, a short film and some stories; so anyone who reads them may relate to our perspective and be inspired to create their own.

This temple town is known for its 18 Basadis, 18 lakes, 18 streets, and 1000 pillars, but Moodabidri is much more than that. It tells the tale of a group affected by famine that travels across half of the nation and gradually establishes footholds of a well-known religion in a place where it is rarely seen to have been practiced, which led to the development of an architectural language - a fusion of the philosophies of a non-indigenous religion with the architectural style of the local South Indian context.
