Know your fortune this month

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK I finish my work for the last edition of 2011 magazine and sign out for the day, with a lot of excitement and fulfillment within. It has been a successful annual completion of Tulip. All I can look back at the year gone by and see are happiness that we shared with people of Hyderabad and how Tulip had won accolades of many. I wish all the readers – cheerful Christmas and a very happy New Year. The cover story reveals one of the most discussed topics – fitness and men choosing the latest trend of getting a lean muscular mass body over the bulkier. Fashion on the other hand, shows the most chosen colours, fabrics, attire for winter; among women. It also features the boutique owners and fashion enthusiasts mentioning the same. Arjuna awardee - Jwala Gutta, one of the best Badminton players India had ever produced; talks about her love for the game and her achievements. Special Bonding has an up-close interview of her family too. Kishan talks about his dream to become a model, to being a major part of Sula Wines and its success in a short time. With added information, Movie Review section has movies running currently and the ones coming up in December, with a new look altogether. Immortals Of Meluha by Amish Tripathi, is one of the most read novels in India these days. There will soon be a Bollywood movie based on this and people are waiting for it. THREE THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS ISSUE A gift is something which you give to your close ones and expect nothing in return. Christmas indeed, is all about giving than taking. People of Hyderabad do not leave a stone unturned, when it comes to celebrating New Year. And so are people, anywhere in the world. No matter the season, women in Hyderabad are always fond of traditional and ethnic wear for any occasion.

Demi Moore

Announces Divorce From Ashton

h o llyw o o d

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher formally declared, as the actress announced that she is filing for divorce. Moore did not specifically cite Kutcher’s alleged affair with a 22-year old named Sara Leal - or the fact that he was also accused of stepping out on his wife in 2010 - but one needs to read between the lines of her statement to understand the basis for this split. Demi wrote - ‘It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife; there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.’ Responded Kutcher, in a Tweet we assume was approved by his editorial team – ‘I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world.’

Michael Belongings To Be Auctioned Off!

According to sources, the bed where Michael Jackson took his last breath is going to be up for sale. The queen size piece is among hundreds of items from the mansion where MJ spent his final days that are set to hit the auction block next month. Sources were told they want to preserve the history of these items. There are several things which will be auctioned off and some of those things are paintings and sculptures which the singing sensation acquired throughout his life and career in pop music. The North Carolwood Drive home where Jackson lived with his three children from December 2008 until his death on June 25th 2009 is separately up for sale. The house and its furnishings were leased to Jackson while he and his family lived there. A note from one of the children remains on a chalkboard inside the kitchen of the home, where barstools are lined up against the center island. A note to Michael from one of his children saying smile daddy, it’s free still remains on the chalkboard.

Victoria’s Secret

With more than 38 models in total, the $12 million production featured six different themes, ranging from - Ballet, Super Angels, Passion Play, Angels Aquatic, I Put a Spell on You and Club Pink. Highlighting the annual event was a duo of long-time Angel favorites - one being Miranda Kerr, who strutted the stage in a stunning $2.5 million 142 carat Fantasy Treasure Bra, with the other being Brazilian beauty Alessandra Ambrosio, who donned a 30-pound pair of whimsical gold-plated wings.

Baby Girl

For Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

b o llyw o o d

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan have become proud parents of a baby girl. The actress gave birth to a girl at the Seven Hills hospital in Andheri, a western Mumbai suburb. An ecstatic Amitabh Bachchan tweeted that he is grandfather to the cutest baby girl, while first-time dad Abhishek tweeted, ‘It’s a Girl.’ Ash was accompanied to the hospital by her parents Vrinda and Krishnaraj Rai, brother Aditya, husband Abhishek and in-laws - Amitabh, Jaya and Shweta Nanda. Earlier this year in June, the news of Ash’s pregnancy was broken by Amitabh Bachchan through Twitter. As Bollywood’s first family and their well-wishers celebrated, the Big B received over thousands of congratulatory tweets from around the world and people thronged the Bachchan residence in Juhu to join in the celebration. The Bachchans chose a suburban hospital for the delivery, seemingly to avoid media glare.

DON 2

In Trouble? Legal problems aren’t new in Bollywood. But this time it involves Baadshah Khan. SRK’s much hyped Don 2 seems to have run into legal trouble. Apparently, the producers of the original Don (1978) Nariman Films have sent a legal notice to the makers of Don 2 over the remaking and title copyright infringement. Nariman Films are the producers of Don starring Amitabh Bachchan. Later, Shah Rukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar approached Nariman Films in 2005 for the remaking rights of Don. The original producers say that they gave remaking rights but only for Don - The chase Begins Again and not Don-2- The Chase Continues. Besides, the producers also claim that the agreement expired in 2009 and was never renewed. Hence, Excel Entertainment and Red Chillies have made Don 2, The Chase Continues without having proper rights. They have thus infringed upon the title registered with Nariman Films i.e. - Don and Don-2 - The Return Of The King. So, this is second infringement.

Sonakshi Sinha Left Race - 2

Recent reports say that a call from Arbaaz Khan saw Sonakshi Sinha bidding a hasty adieu to Abbas-Mastan’s Race 2. It is said that Arbaaz Khan believes that all those who opted out of the sequel actually were going to be a part of Abhinav Kashyap’s next! You may recall that Abhinav, who directed Dabangg, later had a fall-out with the Khan Camp. So, Sonakshi had to make her choice quickly. Since Abbas-Mustan who are very close to Shatrughan and Punam Sinha called them up requesting for Sonakshi’s dates for their movie. When Arbaaz decided to shoot the sequel, from March 2012 onwards, Sonakshi had no choice but to drop everything and make time for the film. It looks like she couldn’t let down the people who gave her first break. Anyway, Abbas confirms that he got a call asking to relieve Sonakshi from Race 2. They said – ‘We got a call saying Sonakshi would be required to shoot Dabangg 2 from March 2012. We had no choice but to let her go.’

Salman Khan

No To Dookudu Remake Bollywood star Salman Khan has finally decided to drop doing Dookudu Hindi remake. This decision from Salman has come at a stage where all things are set for the star to do the Hindi version. Sources close to the Bollywood actor said that Sallu Bhai has decided to drop Dookudu because he’s tired of playing cop roles. Salman already played an under-cover cop in Wanted (Pokiri remake) and he has also played a cop-in-uniform in Dabangg. He’s all set for another cop role in Dabangg 2 and Salman is weary of playing the same cop role in Dookudu apparently. Salman saw Dookudu movie at Pixion theatre, in Bandra and his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri wanted to produce the remake and either Sohail or Arbaaz were to direct the project. Even his sister Alvira Khan also liked it and things are looking pretty bright for Dookudu Hindi remake. But Salman’s decision to drop Dookudu Hindi version has shocked even Mahesh Babu.

Madhu Shalini And Her Own Stunts

Ever since Tollywood’s Madhu Shalini has made it to Ram Gopal Varma’s Department; she’s been hitting the headlines consistently. Freshly, the hot actress is being reported for performing her own stunts. You read it right! Madhu Shalini is playing the role of a gangster and the actress says that she’s really fortunate to get such a role. ‘I have no idea about the kind of role I am playing and I even completed the photo shoot and I was looking exactly like RGV wanted me to. It’s a once in a life time opportunity’ says Madhu Shalini. When Madhu was asked to use a body double in performing the stunts, the actress denied and instead performed her own stunt. But it wasn’t difficult and risky. ‘I wanted to do stunts on my own. Initially it was a bit difficult but later I got used to it although it demands great physical effort’ adjoins Madhu Shalini. Looks like Madhu is all poised for higher honours!

Mumaith Khan Lakshmi Talk Show!

Mumaith Khan is one of the most admired item girls of the modern Telugu cinema. The hot babe recently started her production company titled Sugar Candy Entertainment and is said to be planning to produce some telefilms and documentaries. Buzz is that Mumaith Khan is planning to come up with a talk show, in the lines of Mohanbabu’s daughter Lakshmi Prasanna’s - Lakshmi talk show. Though Lakshmi cannot speak Telugu with flow and diction, provided with the glamorous appeal of the beauty and her skills to make the audience sit on the edge of their seats with her queries, the program was a smashing hit in the popular channel of Tollywood. Before this item bomb, yesteryear actress Jayaprada and singer Smitha also started such a kind of shows which couldn’t generate the required TRPs. Even the exquisite Telugu oratory skills of Jayaprada and Smitha could not make their shows succeed. However, Mumaith cannot speak Telugu with flow and diction and is not having the appeal that could match anyone of the above starlets. 20 DECEMBER, 2011

MICHAEL CARRICK X’Mas League Form

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick urged critics to take stock of the Red Devils’ league form in Christmas. A familiar poaching effort from Mexican striker Javier Hernández following an error from defender Angel Rangel saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s outfit earn maximum points from their first ever league excursion on Welsh soil. Although the result ensured United carved out their third consecutive victory following their 6-1 derby day mauling by Manchester City, midfield enforcer Carrick is adamant that registering points on the board matters most at this stage of the campaign. ‘We were not at our best and the football wasn’t as fluent or easy on the eye, as it could have been,’ Carrick said. But we are happy to have won and to have got the three points. At this stage of the season it’s about picking up points.’ Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs, whose pin-point delivery was converted with deadly accuracy by Hernandez, rued the manner in which United allowed Swansea to gain a foothold in the encounter after drawing first blood.

PRESIDENTS TRIUMPH Tiger woods

Tiger Woods secured the decisive point as the United States retained the Presidents Cup against the international team at Royal Melbourne. Greg Norman’s International side started strongly as they looked to mount an unlikely comeback after heading into the final day’s singles trailing 13-9. But the Americans’ strength in the bottom half of the line-up ensured they clinched a fourth straight victory in the competition. Woods, a controversial wild card pick by USA captain Fred Couples, was pleased with the way he played all week and credited team-mate Steve Stricker for the improvement in his putting. ‘It does feel good,’ the 14-time major champion said. ‘I was hoping it wouldn’t come down to my point.’ Asked where it had come good, he replied – ‘On the putting green. I was listening to this dude behind me [Stricker] giving me a putting tip about releasing the blade a little bit. And whatever he says about putting, I’m going to listen to.’

MOTO GP 2012 Suzuki Pull Out

Suzuki have confirmed they will not race in the 2012 MotoGP World Championship after deciding to suspend their participation in the series. The Japanese manufacturer had been expected to quit MotoGP, having already lost rider Alvaro Bautista to Honda for next season, but Suzuki have also announced a planned return to MotoGP for the 2014 season. A statement released by Suzuki read – ‘Suzuki Motor Corporation has decided to suspend temporarily its participation in FIM Road Racing Grand Prix MotoGP from 2012. This suspension is to cope with tough circumstances mainly caused by the prolonged recession in developed countries, a historical appreciation of Japanese Yen and repeated natural disasters.’ Having an eye to returning to MotoGP in 2014, Suzuki will now focus on developing a competitive new racing machine for that class. Suzuki will continue motocross racing activity and support road racing activities using mass-produced motorcycles, by obtaining FIM homologation and cooperation with the supplier of its development racing kit parts. The recently happened Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Festival was on full-swing. The 3-day festival was action packed. It started with a contemporary note - Transports Exceptionnels - a dance performance featuring a man and his five-ton digger. It left the crowd speechless. Later that evening, drama took center-stage. Funny scenes here and there; like the fights between the husband and wife, which were peppered with sarcasm, left the audience in splits. Many socialites and celebrities were a part of this theatre festival.

lifestyle

7:00 – 9:00

At 5:45

It’s time to head to my gym – Talwalkars. Monish Yadav; who is a close friend of mine, is my gym partner. We always go to gym together. If I miss a day, so would he. That’s the kind of rapport we share with each other. I never miss even a day at gym. Not even weekends. I miss it only when I am travelling, but I make sure – if I am staying in a hotel, I run over a treadmill. I am planning to join Aerobics as well. Having protein drinks in between helps gain a lot of flexibility. I reach home by 9. I take bath and get ready to reach my work by 9:30.

I wake up at sharp 5:45. I indulge myself into Yoga for 10 – 15 minutes. It helps me a lot before going to gym. It helps my mind and body to relax. One doesn’t have to experience fatigue if involved in Yoga for a while.

BREAKFAST TIME! I am health conscious! Breakfast includes – Oats and Kellogs with milk mostly and any light and nutritious food. I avoid Rice as it has high amounts of carbs. I consume fresh fruit juices often.

10:00 – 12:00 I reach my work place. I check my mails, reply them and depending on the schedules, I visit my clients at hotels and distributors to discuss about marketing strategies. I love the work I do! I believe a lot in teamspirit. It’s always people who make a team. I would like it if my staff addresses me by my name and not ‘Sir.’ A way to get work done successfully is by maintaining a good rapport with your colleagues. I respect my team and I don’t want to throw any pressure on them. I want to see them happy all the time.

13:00 Time for lunch and I have it always with my colleagues. Like I mentioned before that I am health conscious, lunch includes lots of Sprouts, Egg-white, fruit-juices and coconut water. This will go for 30 minutes.

14:00 – 18:00 Depending on that particular day’s schedule, I will be out on marketing visits to hotels. Post this will be business and courtesy calls. Mondays are more hectic than other days as I have to check and discuss my sales and targets for the forth-coming week with my staff and have to adhere to the deadlines.

28 DECEMBER, 2011

I have five working days. But I am workaholic. So at times, I work on Saturdays too. Just don’t feel like sitting at home! I love socializing, attending private parties and meeting new people. These days, I am into activities for Remy shot promotions. When I get time away from work, I spend time with Nirmal Singh Bagga, who supports and guides me professionally.

20:00 I come home! I spend time with my family. Though I have my dinners at home mostly, I love to take my family out some times. But there is nothing like home-food, at the end of the day.

MY FAMILY I have one brother and two sisters. I am the most pampered, as I am the youngest. My mother is very close to me and I share everything with her. She is like my friend. I have a naughty son and a daughter (Aryan Raj and Joshita, respectively). I am blessed to have such an adorable family.

TRAVEL MEMORIES I had seen many places in Europe (Austria, France and Italy) and Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Makau). I had plans to visit Brazil carnival, but it was cancelled due to a sudden official work. Within India, I holidayed at Goa with my whole family. We make it a point to visit Tirupathi or Shirdi once a year. I would like to visit USA soon and meet my cousins, who stay at Washington.

5 THINGS PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME… I am fond of wrist-watch collection. (I used to have around 58 watches. I lost a few and have just 28 now). My favourite brands are – Fossil, Omega and Seiko.

l

Before marriage, I was into modeling and I had a dream of working in a fashion industry. At 18, I involving myself into exercising at gym. I also walked for Anupama Verma at the Country Club. But it was all during my college days. After my graduation on 1995, I joined a company called - Allwyn furniture. But in 1998, I got a better opportunity at Allied Domecq as a Sales Executive. I am now inspired by my own wine business.

l

I love giving surprises! I would never leave a guest empty handed.

l

I am blessed with an ability to get what I want and accomplish any task I choose to accept in life, professionally and personally.

l

I was a vivid bike-rider before. These days I am more passionate about cars.

l

I have a dream to conduct a fashion show in Hyderabad soon. I hope this dream comes true. In the next five years, I wish to have my own winery and I know I will achieve this. DECEMBER, 2011 29

CHEERFUL COMPANIONS By Chandni Parekh

Woofs, meows, chirps and squeaks are the sounds of our pets. These sounds bring tremendous joy. Animals can be best friends to mankind. Not because they ask no questions or make no criticism, but because they provide unconditional, unbridled, unwavering love to us. Dogs, Cats, Turtles, Rabbits, Parrots, Peacocks - the list is endless. Choosing a pet is difficult, at times. Tulip brings a list of pets one can choose to have… Dogs – Intelligent, loyal, happy and obedient. Big, small or miniature - if you are staying in an independent house, you can opt for a Saint Bernard, Danish Hound, German Shepherd or a Dalmatian. And if you live in an apartment, you can opt for Boxers, Pugs or Pomeranians. And for all those who love the cute miniature breeds, there are Chihuahua, Dachshunds and Ihasa Apsos. Dogs are the friendliest animals. They know when you are sad and will always be there to cheer you up.

p e t s

Cats - Cuddly, cute and coy yet the most independent among the pets – Cats live by their own rules. They need and value companionship and they make wonderful pets. These quiet creatures groom themselves and come in a wide variety of colours, coats and generally placid temperaments. Most of them are best suited to indoor as well as outdoor life. You can make a good relationship with cats and develop mutual understanding, tolerance and respect. You can opt for the playful tabby cats or Siamese cats and if you can manage to give all your attention to it then, a Persian cat. Fish - The beautiful colours of fish would brighten up your mood and sooth you down anytime. The options are endless. While choosing fish, some of them are pond fish, marine fish, cold water fish and tropical fish. Fish need regular, methodical continuous care in order to live. And if you wish to have marine fish, care must be taken that they live only in salt water. Birds – They make great pets, if you are staying in apartments. They are intelligent, simple to train and require minimal grooming. Their chirps would instantly make your mornings beautiful. They are very affectionate but tend to usually bond with only one member of the family. And you have a number of options in birds - Cocktails, love birds, Parrots, Doves and many more. Rabbits - It is an undeniable fact that Rabbits are one of the most adorable pets. They are very quiet, with extremely low malignance. They have a longer life span and provide a great first pet experience. Try opting for them, if you have spacious living areas with a garden. Turtles - Keeping a pet turtle can be a fun and rewarding experience. They are omnivorous and when kept outdoors, hibernate from fall until spring. Turtles can also be kept indoors, but it requires a lot of maintenance. When a turtle is kept indoors, it is best to create a habitat as close to their natural one as possible. An indoor turtle habitat needs light, shade, monitored moisture and a clean water area for swimming White Mice - They make excellent pets. They are curious, gentle animals which are quite intelligent for their size. They make no loud noises, they cost very little to feed and it is a pleasure to observe and interact with. They also have limitations. Mice, by nature are more timid than dogs and cats. Because they only weight 1-2 ounces, they are very fragile. And one must also be careful; they might escape when out of the cage. Go ahead! Choose a pet and have any size - small or large, winged or grounded, furry or scaly. There is a pet for everyone out there!

Malaa Treon, an artist from Kampala will be displaying the best of hand paintings in – Art On Silk. Her promotion of Indian on silk is through – Wall Décor, Fashion and Lifestyle Sheer Drapes. This eminent artist can promote her caliber through a new medium altogether. Her works are available for all art enthusiasts, worldwide.

Surya Prakash’s landscapes are a tribute to a lost Sublime. The milieus that he creates are not of any specific region. They are the reflections of an imagined land. Engaged in landscape painting for the last nine years, Surya is known for the pointillist renditions of a verdure world. The present suite of paintings is a continuation of his impressionistic landscapes, but they also reflect a new turn in approach. Interestingly, Nature wasn’t Surya’s fixation when he started out as an artist. Back then, he was busy discovering mechanized realms of human existence by exploring the eerie world of the junkyard. The muted steel bodies of battered automobiles offered him a diction that he articulated through

ar t

abstract forms. The paintings evoked a sense of contemporariness and also marked Surya’s predilection for Abstraction. The trend began with the series - Jargon of the Junk and continued to the subsequent cycle of works - Flight where leafy forms hung in space like potent signs of ominous arrivals. Surya employs the laboured process of drip as well as pointillist techniques to create a medley of interlocking color dots that huddle together and eclipse any sharply defined boundaries. If one steps beyond formal representational skills, there are elements which suggest that Surya is not capturing a slice of land, but rather conveying a yearning for an idealized terra firma unsullied by the pollution ridden world. Indeed, the defining feature of Surya’s work is the exposition of such unnamed lands. The built up picture space initiate a sense of voyage.

‘I have one aim and that is to promote Art of India and the concept of wearing the art’ – Malaa Treon. DECEMBER, 2011 33

T

he Immortals of Meluha - first book in the Shiva Trilogy is thrilling. It cleverly intersperses fact and fiction, introduces unimaginable mythological and historical characters and keeps you hooked all the time. The story takes place in the imaginary land of Meluha and how they are saved from their wars by a nomad named Shiva. It begins with the Meluhan king – Daksha, inviting tribes to stay at his country, one of them being Shiva’s tribe. They soon come to recognize Shiva as their fabled saviour called Neelkanth after he devours a poison which turns his throat blue. Shiva decides to help the Meluhans in their war against the Chandravanshis, who had joined forces with a cursed group called - Nagas. However, in his journey and the resulting fight that ensues, Shiva learns how his choices actually reflected who he aspires to be and how it led to dire consequences. The plot moves at a brisk pace, most of the characters are well etched out and the readers’ attention is never allowed to flag with over-indulgence in any of the plot-points. The romance between Shiva and Nandi gives almost a Bollywood kind of feel but ultimately turns out to be immensely enjoyable. It brings out the human side of Shiva and it does take time to adjust to his profanities and non-God side. Purists may have a little problem with the names of the weapons included, but if readers can relate more with the characters due to such nuances, it is absolutely fine. Finally, the book ends with a lot of promise and a battle for the supremacy. The set-up surely leaves you wanting more.

TULIP

success story

Neeru’s was started in 1971, when my mother started a small shop with tailoring and embroidery of superior & intricate designs. In 1979, we then established one of India’s first retail outlets that were exclusively devoted to one of the most popular and finest ladies dress wear - Salwar Kameez. In 1983, Neeru’s started manufacturing and wholesale under the name of Neeru textiles, supplying its quality fabrics to over 1000 retailers India-wide, without branding. Neeru’s today has created a brand in itself for it has all the ingredients that make it irresistible for a clientele from all over INDIA & NRI’s mainly from UK, USA, Canada, Middle East & other countries... Today 2011, we are the best and stand No. 1 as a women ethnic brand in India. The business journey teaches and changes everyone. How do you think it has changed you?

Why did you choose Hyderabad? And how the city is now, in terms of tradition and fashion.

How easy was it for you to reach the place where you stand today?

Your take on your success? Started as necessity and later became passion. Things which kept you going through the struggle? Any businessperson would say that an alternative name of business is risk and so it is to me. Taking initiatives, innovating, identifying the opportunities, exploring the niche markets are all factors which drive you to success technically. But, what’s more important is how strong are you personally to tackle struggle? So for me personally the thing which kept me going through the struggle or at any point of time is - passion. Passion for work, more and more work! Describe your journey so far? We are the first to start salwar suits and lehengas in India, in the year 1979. Then we started handloom without any sort of branding going to shop to shop in the year 1984. Today, handloom got its own status. Latter on, in the year 1992, we were the first to have blouse in 2/2.

Neeru’s always believes in being a trendsetter rather than a trend follower. Precisely the USP of Neeru’s is providing with the best and latest of ethnic fashion at a reasonable price tag. Another USP of Neeru’s is its clientele reach and distribution system, which is why, Neeru’s today has created a brand in itself and has clientele from all over India and NRIs mainly from UK, USA, Canada, Middle East & other countries. Any such incident, which has made you remember the most or has affected you in more than a way? In Mid 1980, I went to Delhi carrying handloom and salwar suits to south extension best stores for selling. At that time south extension store were known as leading stores in India. When I showed them up our collection they literary started laughing on me and said handloom is only meant for maids not for us. I was very much keen on my work and went store to store. At last, I got order from 3 stores for small consignment at that time handloom was only consider for lower grade people. But today handloom got its own status. But was funnier when the same stores, who were laughing on me, started selling handloom with status.

s o t ry

The journey wasn’t easy, yet not so tough. At Neeru’s we had always believed to identify the opportunities and exploit it. Simple mantra the four Ps - price, product, place and promotion. All these need to be given equal importance and fulfilled. The retail industry in India is still at its early stages with a lot of potential and growth, hence providing retailers like us chance to explore and reach out to the customers and provide them with their fashion needs. We at Neeru’s have diversified to reach out to the maximum in terms of ethnic and hence launched our sub-brands - Yuva by Neeru’s - fashion accessories brand and Little Neeru’s - ethnic wear for Kids. Also our website - www.neerus.com is a medium to purchase Neeru’s products online.

What do you feel is your usp?

s u cc e s s

Neeru’s is based in Hyderabad, my hometown. In 1971, when Neeru’s was started, Hyderabad was an unexploited city in terms of fashion but yes, tradition did exist. Neeru’s established its first outlet which was then famous by the name Punjabi Suit Store/Salwar Kameez Store. Later, in the coming years I wanted to bring Hyderabad on the Indian fashion map and hence, contributed towards changing the retail concept in Hyderabad in 1990s. Neeru’s then became a fashion need amongst the Hyderabadi ladies and today it is a well-established national women ethnic wear brand.

In 1980, few incidents have given me much strength to continue my work along with criticism on handloom.

You owe your success to? Its always said that behind every successful man there is a woman, its true in my case as well but with plural form – women i.e, my inspiration - my Mother and my strength is my wife - Mrs. Neeru Kumar. How do you look at your future? We at Neeru’s are alongside, planning/implementation under-way to expand within the diameters of malls - seamless and shop-n-shop, all around India. We are currently intending to spread out within south India, mainly - the twin-cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad and rest of Andhra Pradesh, Bangalore, Chennai, etc. Later moving up North. Advice to the readers of Tulip? Always have faith in yourself and work with passion. Be optimistic and always believe that no matter how much success we confront, we are still learners.

SOUTH AMERICAN WINTER DESTINATIONS

Tourism in Peru makes up the nation’s third largest industry, behind fishing and mining. Tourism is directed towards archeological monuments, ecotourism in the Peruvian Amazon, cultural tourism in colonial cities, gastronomic tourism, adventure tourism and beach tourism. According to a Peruvian government study, the satisfaction rate for tourists after visiting Peru is 94%.

Panoramic Shot of Machu Picchu, looking towards Huayna Picchu

UNESCO World Heritage Site MACHU PICCHU – Lost City Of The Incas It is the most familiar icon in the Inca world. The central buildings of Machu Picchu use the classical Inca architectural style of polished drystone walls of regular shape. Many junctions in the central city are so perfect that it is said not even a blade of grass fits between the stones. Inca walls had numerous design details that helped protect them against collapsing during an earthquake. Doors and windows are trapezoidal and tilt inward from bottom to top corners usually are rounded; inside corners often incline slightly into the rooms and L-shaped blocks often were used to tie outside corners of the structure together. These walls do not rise straight from bottom to top, but are offset slightly from row to row.

INTIHUATANA STONE The Sun-Tier is believed to have been designed as an astronomic clock or calendar by the Incas. The Intihuatana stone is one of many ritual stones in South America. These stones are arranged to point directly at the sun during the winter solstice. The name of the stone (coined perhaps by Bingham) is derived from the Quechua language - Inti means

Circular Plaza - Chavin Sun and Wata - is the verb root ‘to tie, hitch (up)’ (huata- is simply a Spanish spelling). The Quechua - na suffix derives nouns for tools or places. Hence inti watana is literally an instrument or place to ‘tie up the sun’, often expressed in English as The Hitching Post of the Sun. The Inca believed the stone held the sun in its place along its annual path in the sky. The stone is situated at 13°9’48” S. At midday on November 11th and January 30th the sun stands almost above the pillar, casting no shadow at all. On June 21st the stone is casting the longest shadow on his southern side and on December 21st a much shorter one on his northern side.

CHAVIN DE HUANTAR

Raimondi Estela - Chavin de Huantar 36 36 DECEMBER, DECEMBER, 2011 2011

This archaeological site contains ruins and artifacts and is occupied by later cultures by the Chavín, a major pre-Inca culture. Chavín de Huántar is located north of modern day Lima at the merging of two rivers - the Mosna and Huanchecsa Rivers. As a result this site allows for easy transportation and, at the same time, limited access to outsiders. Chavín de Huántar itself is located on a lowland valley where the two rivers merge and high altitude valleys are located nearby. It has been suggested that Chavin de Huantar served as the meeting place of the natural and cosmic forces. The area is known to have natural hot springs as well as an awe-inspiring view of the Huantsan peak which could both add to religious significance of the site.

Plaza de Armas - Cuzco

CUZCO It is a major tourist destination and receives almost 2 million visitors a year. It is designated as the Historical Capital of Peru by the Constitution of Peru. The surrounding area, located in the Huatanay Valley, is strong in gold mining and agriculture, including corn, barley, quinoa, tea and coffee. Calla Hutan Rumiyuq Street is the most visited by tourists. On the street Hatun Rumiyoq (Of the Old Rock) was the palace of Inca Roca, which was converted to the Archbishop’s residence. Along this street that runs from the Plaza de Armas to the Barrio de San Blas, one can see the Stone of Twelve Angles, which is viewed as marvel of ancient stonework and has become emblematic of the city’s history.

La Compania Church is considered one of the best examples of colonial baroque style on the American continents. Its façade is carved in stone and its main altar is made of carved wood covered with gold leaf. It was built over an underground chapel. This church has a valuable collection of colonial paintings of the Cusco School.

NAZCA LINES These are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru. They were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The high, arid plateau stretches more than 80 kilometers (50 mi) between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana about 400 km south of Lima. The hundreds of individual figures range in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, orcas, llamas and lizards. People trying to preserve the Nazca Lines are concerned about threats of pollution and erosion caused by deforestation in the region.

UCAYALI The region of Ucayali is in the Peruvian Amazon. Its capital - Pucallpa, is the second largest city in the Peruvian Amazon after Iquitos. The department is home to a variety of geological monuments such as waterfalls. Tourist lodges are abundant, allowing visitors to experience the Peruvian Amazon firsthand. The large bodies of water such as the Jungle Rivers and lakes are perfect for aquatic sports such as water skiing, rowing, and fishing. The Ucayali river passes through the department and is the most important mode of transportation.

Ruins of Sacsayhuaman

HUASCARAN NATIONAL PARK It was also pronounced as Natural Heritage of Humanity and recognized as Reserve of Biosphere Core. The highest mountain in Peru is located in the park (also named Huascarán, reaching 6,768 meters high). It is possible to walk among mountains of over 6000 m in height without being an experienced mountaineer, although there are peaks which attract the most dedicated climbers. As well as this, ecotourism, horse riding, skiing and guided archaeological excursions are all popular.

Night View of Coricancha Coricancha and Convent of Santo Domingo - The Coricancha (Quri Kancha) was the most important sanctuary dedicated to the Sun god Inti at the time of the Inca Empire. This temple was named the site of gold because all its walls were covered with gold leaf by the Incas. Rio Abiseo National Park - The most famous archaeological site in the Rio Abiseo park is Gran Pajatén, a ruined settlement atop a forested ridge overlooking the Montecristo River canyon. Nearby are the ruins of Los Pinchudos a series of cliff tombs discovered by Pataz villagers in the early 1970s. Gran Pajatén, Los Pinchudos and other archaeological remains identified in the park are usually attributed to the Chachapoyas culture. The most extensive archaeological work done in Rio Abiseo Park was led by the University of Colorado during the mid-1980s.

Huascarán National Park is home to mountains ranging from 2000 to over 6000 m in height. Huascarán, the mountain from which the park takes its name, is the highest in Peru at 6768 m, and rises above nearby peaks such as Alpamayo and Pisco. DECEMBER, DECEMBER, 2011 2011 37 37

Quality of life is the most important thing one can wish to have. Good health combined with happiness helps us achieve a high quality of life. Fitness is what makes us achieve these things, as quality of life is only attained by a healthy life and fitness makes a life healthy. Tulip presents you the importance of keeping yourself fit in today’s world, concerns over six-pack abs and ways to attain a good, lean, muscular physique…

FITNESS AMONG MEN Myths, Interesting Facts, Possibilities…

By Aditya Tej

GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION – The condition of being suitable… Fitness is just as important as good health. It correlates directly with our health. Society’s attitude towards health and fitness has changed over the past few years and we are all much more aware of the need to be positive about our health and recognize the importance of physical fitness than ever before. We are encouraged to adopt a positive attitude to our health by taking better care of both our bodies and minds - but what does positive health and keeping fit really mean? Positive health is about maintaining a minimum level of health and fitness to keep your body looking and feeling good, but also maintaining a level of physical fitness which will enable you to manage and enjoy your daily lifestyle. Health and fitness is determined by what we eat, how we live our lives, our choice of leisure pursuits and what we do to keep ourselves physically fit. Remaining physically fit is important for the following reasons – Maintaining a good level of physical fitness will give you a feeling of better health through increased energy and vitality, making you feel better about yourself and about your life. Being fit helps the activities in your life easier to manage; it keeps your body in shape and keeps you looking good, which in turn provides the feel good factor making you work more efficiently and effectively. Many so-called healthy foods are actually cleverly disguised junk foods and stimulate you to gain more belly fat. Yet the diet food marketing industry continues to lie to you, so they can maximize their profits.

over men who look lean. Lean look is the new trend and work for newage actors and models. It is strange the way bulkier body look faded, though it was once a craze and fashion. A flat toned stomach and six pack abs are the new physical standards of attractiveness and fitness, we have to match up to. Clearly having a fat mid section is not attractive. No one likes love handles or a fat belly except on Santa Claus.

MEN AND THEIR 6-PACK OBSESSION We all have ab muscles. Those are the ones responsible for that 6 pack abs look. But in most people, abs is covered with layers of fat. And excess abdominal fat is dangerous. According to a recent survey, men with not-too-good looking physique, dream about having 6-packs at least 3 times a day (most of them aged 20 – 30). Women too, tend to have an impression that men with 6-pack / wash-board abs look more attractive.

A FEW TIPS TO GAIN FLAT ABS are actually the least effective methods of getting flat six pack abs. Boring repetitive cardio exercise routines are not the best ways to lose body fat and uncover those six pack abs. Ab belts, ab-rockers, ab-loungers and other infomercial ab-gimmicks – they are all a complete waste of your time and money. Despite the misleading infomercials, the perfectly chiseled fitness models in the commercials did not get their perfect body by using that ab contraption. They got their perfect body through real workouts and real nutrition strategies.

Always remember that in order to reduce fat anywhere on the body, you will need to take in fewer calories than your body uses; so if you attack by lowering your calorie intake and then adding exercise to

BULK IS OUT – LEAN IS IN Looking back to models, actors in the movie industry a decade ago; they all believed in and had beefed up, well toned, bulkier bodies. While the urge to gain 6-pack abs continues within, people are aiming to have this new look on them. Many actors starting from Hollywood, like – Robert Pattison and Peter Facinelli from Twilight fame, Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling; to many among Tollywood like – Ram Charan Teja, Naga Chaitanya and others are now willing to maintain this lean body mass look, as it is the in-thing. We have also seen girls going mad

your day, you will begin to burn off the low ab fat. One thing everyone should know that - wash-board, lean body cannot be attained in one day. It takes weeks and in fact months of sheer determination, workout routines and patience. If it is achieved in a lesser time, it doesn’t last for a longer time. 6-packs achieved after a long, strenuous work-out sessions for months together, stay for longer. One must strengthen abdominal muscles while at the same time lose body fat. One must use a journal to record daily activities, towards achieving this goal. A spiral notebook makes a wonderful journal because the pages remain in chronological order. Review the entries in your journal at least once each week. This provides great perspective on your progress. Try to eat five or six small meals throughout the day. A typical meal might consist of one serving of carbs and one serving of protein. Each serving should be no larger than the palm of your hand. This will regulate your metabolism. Avoid skipping meals. Many people find that using medicine balls or stability balls add excellent variety to their workouts. Use the medicine ball for added weight on your routines and use the stability ball for a variety of crunches. If you are focusing on building muscles because you are already reasonably thin, there are lots of passive exercises you can do throughout the day. For instance; while sitting at a desk, you can continually clench your stomach. Or conversely, you could do this every time you walk through a door. Develop these simple habits and you will be surprised at the effectiveness over time.

Get Bold LIPS, Smoky EYES and Glowing SKIN

Archana Patel studied at National Institute of Fashion Technology. She got graduated at

Glasgow Caledonian in Scotland. Fashion was always synonymous with her. She was always inclined towards making people look smart and chic in her clothes and well groomed at hercouture salon - Ashton Pierra. Her salon has experts from hair, skin, makeup, nail. Ashton Pierra makes every client, feel on top of the world. Taking the focus to make-up, Archana suggests every woman needs to refresh their looks, according to the occasion and season. Makeup can define one’s persona and change perception. Ashton Pierra uses - Mac, Kryolyn, Dior and makeup studio. The skin needs to be nourished. For that, a balanced diet and regular cleanups and once a month O3+ brightening facial will keep you fresh and young...

The Focus - Smoky, seductive eyes! The Secrets 1. Apply an eye shadow primer that closely matches the colour of your lids; a very thin layer is enough to keep the shadow from creasing, fading or smudging - and won’t make the colour look cakey. 2. Use a brush to blend a shimmery lavender eye shadow from your upper lash line to just above the crease of your lid. With a liner brush, trace the same shade below your bottom lashes. (Although the purple you see here flatters every skin tone, if you are pale and a little colour-shy, you can try a lighter shade.) 3. Apply two coats of mascara. A volumizing formula will add the length and thickness you need to match the dramatic effect of the colourful shadow.

Complete the look! Blend a Raspberry blush on the apples of your cheeks - make sure it’s matte (shimmer on your eyes and face is too much of a good thing). A bronze lipstick is a perfect complement to bold, colour-saturated eye makeup.

Use M.A.C. Grey or silver color eye shadow or body shop D3015A (silver) and D3477(brown) as base eye shadow. l Use M.A.C. black eye liner for the top and bottom rims and contour the corner of the eyes. l Use M.A.C. Bad black opulash mascara. Apply 2 or 3 coats for better result. l

The Focus - striking, bold lips! The Secrets -

1. Choose a colour a couple of shades brighter than your natural lip tone. As a rule, Raspberry shades complement a fair complexion, true red flatters olive skin and burgundies work beautifully against dark complexions.

a

2. Dab on the lipstick straight from the tube, but confine the colour to the centre of your lips. Then use your finger to blend the colour out to the corners of your mouth. (Wedded to wearing gloss? Use the wand to apply a thin layer, concentrating the colour on the middle of your mouth.) 3. Blot away excess colour with a tissue so it becomes more subtle - and stays put. (If you are going with a gloss, don’t blot; but do blend concealer around your lips first to prevent smudging.)

Complete the look! Keep eye makeup minimal - Blend an earth-tone eye shadow over your lids and apply one coat of lengthening mascara.

l l

l

Use lip liner similar to your lipstick color. If you have thin lips, use the liner a little outside your lips and for thick lips, use the liner inside your lips. Apply lipstick with a brush and then finally apply lip-gloss lightly on the top it. Following are the recommended lipsticks for bold lips - M.A.C.lipstick VIVA GLAM 1 AA9, Chambor lipstick Silk Pop, Mary Kay lipstick Red Salsa, etc and any other bold colors like blood red and orange color lipsticks are recommended.

The Focus - gorgeous, glowy skin! The Secrets 1. You probably already use concealer to minimize blemishes, dark spots and under eye circles, but it’s worth taking the time to use a fine-pointed brush for precise application. And don’t forget the inner corners of your eyes, where most of us have shadows. 2. One foundation does not fit all. Powder formulas give a natural finish and are easy to touch up. They are fairly sheer. So if you need more coverage or have fine lines around your eyes and lips (which powder can accentuate), try a liquid instead. 3. For the best skin, only better effect, apply foundation with a brush or latex sponge, blending back and forth (not just in one direction). 4. After you swirl a soft pink blush on the apples of your cheeks (blending it up a little toward your ears), lightly brush a honey brown highlighter just under the blush to give definition to your cheekbones.

Complete the look! Trace a gray eyeliner (it’s more low-key than black and flatters every skin tone) along your upper lash line and dab a pink or red-tinted balm on your lips. l l l

Use foundation that matches your skin tone. For example - M.A.C. AA9 NC 40 foundation for fair skin and A 30 NC 45 foundation for darker skin. To keep the concealer and foundation longer, apply loose or M.A.C. pressed powder NC40 BC 9 . Follow it with the application of eye shadow with neutral shades like brown e.g M.A.C BB8. Play on plums eye shadow or body shop XE001CD eye shadow. DECEMBER, 2011 41

DENTISTRY

ADVANCEMENTS AND BENEFITS

Dr. Arpitha

A smile makes a day better! It is time now to upgrade ourselves with the most modern technologies, treatments and advises from Dentists. Dr. Arpitha, Deputy Manager at Denty’s Dental Care, talks to Tulip about common dental complaints among people these days and how to tackle them... Disease of gums is directly related to Diabetes and latest Tell me what you like about Dentistry Dentistry is one field which makes the people - smile confidently, either the esthetics wise or healthy breath wise.

Common Dental ailments I would list a few common now-a-days • Bad breath, Gingivitis, Dental caries or cavities • Among kids, non eruption or slow eruption of permanent teeth (meaning the permanent teeth do not erupt on time).

study shows that it is related to Cardiac ailments… gums and that is; teeth are used to grind, chew the food into smaller pieces and along with saliva is sent for digestion. It makes it easy for the stomach to digest and send nutrients into the blood. Therefore if we take care of teeth right from young, they would remain strong at the time of need - that is old age, where in stomach functionality is lowered and need of nutrients in the body is more. The teeth should be there to chew the food down as much as possible and send to the stomach to digest and send nutrients properly to body.

• Among kids, over retained deciduous teeth (milk teeth not appearing on time).

Importance of keeping teeth and gums clean Most of them do not understand one major quality of the teeth and

wellbeing

How to tackle teeth problems The best way is to have a schedule made, to visit Dentist once in 6 months for check up and regular cleaning. The dentist will handle all the problems.

Diagnosis and treatment of Gingivitis Most of the population is suffering with one kind of Gingivitis. Basically anything irritating the gums, will lead to inflammation of gums called Gingivitis. Regular prophylaxis (cleaning), will take away all the irritants near the gums. Also drink plenty of water in a day to keep the mouth hydrated, dryness of mouth also will irritate the gums.

How do you think Dental profession has changed over the last 15 years in India Over past few years, awareness among people about teeth has changed. It’s good to see people giving importance to teeth. Dentists undergo lot of training and education just like a regular MBBS, takes same amount of time. In past few years, the curriculum wise also has been upgraded lot to understand even the whole body systems. Dental profession has become one of the most wanted professions. Taking the whole world into consideration, it’s a passion to work with teeth, with latest technology and advancements. So much can be done to give a wonderful, beautiful smile on every face.

What stresses do dentists face other than their time management Dentists work on micro level! Teeth being small and opening of mouth would be restricted - Dentists are usually probe for stressing their neck and fingers. So physically this would be a greatest challenge that they have to take. Getting or matching 90% of patients’ expectations also is a stress in cosmetic dentistry. Other than that, prices are high due to the equipment and materials used, which would stress dentist and patients.

Can you tell us about any modern advances in dentistry For general public point of view, there are huge advances in modern dentistry. To name a few are • Implants to replace missing teeth, could be one to many.

Ceramic Veneers - Dentistry • Fixed dentures with implants and no more removable ones. • Laser Dentistry to reduce pain and bleeding and faster healing. • Most of all - metal free and all ceramic crowns. • Technology wise a lot! Say - digitalized X-Rays, Rotary Endodontics, intra oral cameras, etc…

How is Dentistry different to other jobs It’s not a 9 to 5 job although Dentists work from 10 am to 9 pm. We do take back patients’ pain, outcomes, etc… on our heads. We are connected to patient emotionally, say to relieve pain. We go through it, to make them happy. We work hard to get a best possible smile.

Simple home tips to follow, in order to have healthy teeth and gums Brush twice a day (3 minutes) Floss once a day (1 min) Clean your tongue (1 min) Rinse with plenty of water or mouth wash Spend 5 min in 24 hours for your teeth And once in 6 months visit to Dentist Healthy teeth and happy smiles are what we (Dentists) believe in. - As told to Aditya Tej

Reverse the age ‘Aging is a normal process of body in normal people, but a Yogi defies age and logic, he is not a normal human being’ - says Yogi Ashwini. Let’s try and understand it as an experiment! Count the number of times you breathe in a minute. If your breath count is between 7-8, it indicates balance. If it is 10-20, then it indicates imbalance. Beyond 25, it indicates complete imbalance and chaos. How? Let’s understand. The speed with which we breathe is directly proportional to the speed with which we age. As we breathe in we inhale Oxygen, the prime property of oxygen is combustion or burning. As a result of this process energy is produced, this process is commonly known as metabolism. The cells of our body use this energy produced by the way of metabolism for day to day functioning of the body. Modern lifestyle believes in increasing metabolism for losing weight, staying fit, etc. On the contrary, it works in opposite manner as, the faster a cell produces energy, faster it dies and regenerates itself, a new cell comes up in its place. Every new cell which gets regenerated is weaker than the previous one. That is ageing of the body. To add on, the by-product of combustion is a toxin called ama in Sanskrit, which corrodes the internal organs of the body further weakening the body. A deeper yogic point of view illustrates that faster metabolism causes faster ageing of the body. Looking at the glow and strength Yogi Ashwini exudes and practitioners of Sanatan Kriya amply proves the efficacy of yogic sciences and the system it follows. A yogi’s health, radiance and strength far exceeds a normal person as he controls prana, with which he is able to keep the ageing process in complete control. Sanatan Kriya comprising of 5 easily comprehensible parts/steps of yoga is a powerful technique, which has led even the doctors of Indian Medical Association(IMA) to recognize and certify its efficacy and results. For validation one can check www.dhyanfoundation.com. Some of the books written by Yogiji are Sanatan Kriya 51 Miracles.... And A Haunting, Thoughts........of the Inner World, Sanatan Kriya - Basic.... Essence of Yoga, Sanatan Kriya 51 Chamatkar... Aur Pataal Ka Darshan. Versatile Wallpapers

i n t e ri o r

Always select wallpapers in a vertical position and not on a table-top. Stand the wallpaper pattern book or sample piece against a wall... Wallpaper can add the finishing touch to any room, but it is better to start a room scheme with the wallpaper, as it has the strongest affect on the final atmosphere of the room. Wallpaper can create depth, dimension, drama or simplicity and elegance when you follow a few simple steps. The choice of wallpaper can make a room look more spacious or more intimate, even hallways and corridors. Look for wallpaper which can add the scale and colour to a room, that will give it a desired feel. Why paper? There is no better way to add colour, pattern and texture to your walls all at once.

Choose your style Selecting wallpaper is tougher than picking paint, because you are picking colour and pattern. Start by making a design board. Include pictures from magazines which will inspire the room, colours

you will be using and any finishes or pictures of furniture. Once you have established a mood and direction, picking the right wall covering gets easier.

Get samples When you find a paper you like in a book, order a sample. If you shop online, ask your wallpaper resources to send you goodsized samples of your top three to five favourites.

Live with them When the samples arrive, resist the temptation to order twenty rolls right away. First you have to live with them. Tape the samples to your wall for a few days. Walk around your house and see if they feel at home with the other rooms. You want a sense of belonging! 44 44 DECEMBER, DECEMBER, 2011 2011

The best rooms to paper are rooms without soft furnishings. Dining rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms are great places to start.

TULIP

Don’t know where to begin?

It’s not forever Gone are the days when it was easier to take out the wall than remove old wallpaper. Today’s wallpaper is easy to apply and remove. If you do not like what you picked in a few years, no big deal.

Consider durability For kitchens and kids’ baths, pick a paper with vinyl. Other rooms can handle paper.

Feeling timid?

Play Walls do not have to be completely covered and borders can go places other than the top of the wall. Try hanging borders a foot from the ceiling or around a door. Mix patterns! Consider papering the ceiling too.

LITTLE ITALY Restaurant Italians are one of the few people in the world who are truly passionate about their food. They take a lot of pride in their cooking and love their food fresh from the pan. Little Italy pioneered the romance that is associated with Italian cuisine in India. They started their journey from Pune as La Pizzeria at a time when very few people in India knew the taste and authenticity of this cuisine. Neither Penne, Fuseli, Spaghetti were commonly heard of nor were they available at stores in India. La Pizzeria was more like a traditional pizza house at the beginning with a limited offering of Pastas and other dishes. As the popularity and demand increased they slowly started adding up other dishes, such as Daily specials - pastas, soups and salads along with our existing menu. La Pizzeria became a huge hit with locals and foreigners alike. It became a preferred dining destination for people of Pune. They are committed to exceeding our customers’ expectations every time they visit. Little Italy is passionate about consistently enhancing and improving the Little Italy brand. WORLDWIDE MERRIMENT

special

By Aditya Tej

A time when families and friends get together! Christmas is more about giving, than taking… ‘Biting-cold December! I was accompanied by my family on visiting friends; for dinner at their residence, on a pleasant Christmas evening. It was so cold, I wondered if there would be snowfall later. As a little boy, I wholeheartedly wished though for snow to feel once; while waiting for it all evening till late in the night, looking across the window at my friend’s home. And as a little boy (naughty and shy, but curious about nature and happenings around), I was looking forward for surprises, was keen to hear and understand more about Christmas and what’s about the festival – so much felicity, we can’t wait to celebrate it. As a matter of fact, there are people who plan the whole year, just to make sure the celebrations go perfectly. A few moments before dinner, I was called up to a huge gathering inside to be a part of the much awaited moment – cutting the Christmas cake. I knew, I never did that before and so was more than glad, with elders surrounding me. Standing so close to the cake, I was looking around at everyone with that innocent subtle smile, yet with deep sense of joy setting within. That day was also the first time, I ever saw a well-bedecked Christmas tree, subtly yet finely kept at one side of the home. And not too late after dinner, I was told by my friends there (who were rather too elder than I was, then) - the story involved in Christmas, the purpose of celebrations, responsibilities and human morals and the way it changes us every year, as we grow older. That was the best Christmas I had and wish I could bring that day back. I wish Christmas was like that every year. The festival never fades away without giving something good to everyone. It was and will remain special for me. While being drifted to how incredibly we were celebrating inside my friends’ home - entailed to sharing words and happy times together, time flew by faster than we thought, through utter excitement and bliss. But, sigh! My dream to feel the snow as a kid remained a dream.’

T

he real meaning of Christmas is to remember the birth of Jesus and why He came in - to save us from our sins. A time to remember the meaning of sharing, not with family, but with everyone around! (Although this should be remembered all year round) - Gifts and meals are sent out to those who are less fortunate. Celebrations start the afternoon of 24th December with families preparing meals for the next day. A variety of meats, salads and puddings are made. Towards the evening, it’s time to head off to church and listen to the message about Christmas. An hour or so before midnight, candles are lit and carols are sung. The service ends with blessings and good wishes. Once back home, gifts are opened or left for the next morning. Handing out gifts is optional. The next morning - December 25th; starts early with families getting together and greeting each other. The whole day consists of being together as a family and enjoying the meal. Each second of life is a blessing and a miracle.

CHRISTMAS CAKE STORY – Celebrating With Plum Cakes… The Christmas cake as we know it, today comes from two customs which became one around 1870 in Victorian England. Originally there was a porridge, the origins of which go back to the beginnings of Christianity. Then there was a fine cake made with the finest milled wheat flour. A lot of efforts go into making a Christmas cake. It takes hours to bake. A lot of fruits, nuts and spices are used in the making. An old tradition and it still is, in the United Kingdom and it began as plum porridge. It then changed over time, becoming plum Christmas pudding. Some use farthing coins, Scotch or Rum also. The Scotts and Irish vary slightly with alcohol types, but in essence, they are the same. DECEMBER, 2011 53

Plum Porridge - Originally people used to eat a sort of porridge on Christmas Eve. It was a dish

to line the stomach after a day’s fasting, which people used to observe for Christmas eve or the vigil as it was called long ago. Gradually, they began to put spices, dried fruits, honey etc in the porridge to make it a special dish for Christmas. Much later it was turned into a pudding, because it got to be so stiff with all the fruits and things, that they would tie it in a cloth and dunk it into a large cauldron of boiling water and boil it for many hours. This turned into Christmas pudding.

Plum Cake - Later, around the 16th century, it became popular to add butter - replacing the oatmeal with wheat flour, adding eggs to hold it together better. This became boiled plum cake. So boiled plum pudding and boiled fruitcake existed side by side depending on which ingredients the housewife used.. Best places to avail Plum-Cakes

‘Christmas this year is going to be special in many ways, one being – my brother is blessed with a baby daughter. So it’s going to be a complete family get-together, this time. I am looking forward to feed the poor, at home or the aged; as that’s how my Christmas is going start after morning mass at St. Anthony’s church’ Gavin Joseph - Businessman

‘Christmas has always been a special occasion for me and my family. I grew up in Kenya and every year was more exciting than the previous. Decorating the tree and expecting Santa to come home was all a part of celebrations. I have been celebrating in India since 11 years now with friends. Traditionally, it’s a BBQ get together at home with lots of food and wine and great friends for company. This year, I will be excited to celebrate Christmas with my 3 dogs. And if we are (my husband and I) not at home and have sometime away from work, then Christmas is definitely on the highway. There is nothing more exciting than road trips, be it on bike or car and if I get to do that on Christmas, then Santa has definitely come home this time’ Preeti Philip - Director of Marketing & Communications, Novotel 54 DECEMBER, 2011

‘Christmas means Christ and his people. This is the time when Christians all over the world begin to have a feeling of oneness and a great opportunity to share the love of Christ. When a child is born, there is so much of joy in the entire family. But Christ birth was entirely different - a unique atmosphere prevailed. No friends, no relations except his lowly and humble parents who had no special clothing for the baby. Angels sang a song with profound joy at the birth of Christ, to the poor villagers who came to visit him. God through His angels called Him ‘Emmanuel’ which means God is with us and we call Him Jesus who loves us’ – Emmeliana D’silva - HR Recruiter

REVIEWS I am a family guy and spend most of the time with my parents. I have a particular set of friends with whom I generally hang around. New Year is always special as I throw private parties for my close friends. Most of the time I celebrate New Year abroad. This time I am planning to go to Goa with some friends and enjoy a nice beach party. It will be a four days plan were I will chill out to the extreme. Once in a while, I love taking break from the usual routine. My motto in life is - work hard and party harder. – Vinayak Pampati ‘Every Year, its predecessor is remembered. Some parts of it are recollected fondly and some parts, well, not so much! Everyone hurriedly strings together a list of resolutions, but only a (chosen) few manage to live up to those. I am not one among those few, but I do try. Over the years, I’ve accumulated a few favourites of mine. Every year I hope to do and be better. I try to attain the courage to overcome my shortcomings and learn more. I want to love my loved ones more and be with them more. I want to celebrate life more, have fun, go shopping, eat good food and do whatever it is that feels good. We are born with a limited supply of New Years - cherish each one to the maximum. Here’s wishing you (and me) a wonderful New Year’

HITTING A HOME RUN

Jwala Gutta talks about her game of life. Her family mentions how proud they are, of her awards and achievements. Tulip also portrays a fact that love brings people By Aditya Tej together, no matter the distance...

Kranti, Yelan, Jwala & Insi Kranti – Sevagram, Mahatma Gandhi’s ashram, Maharashtra – 1980. I was living there. I, along with my brother and a close friend of mine, wanted to meet Yelan and interact with her, who then newly visited India with her grandfather. It couldn’t happen! Days went by and she was advised to take Chemistry classes from me and visited my home for the first time. I didn’t teach her the subject of Chemistry much, but the other kind of chemistry worked well (laughs). Soon, I fell in love with her! But after knowing that her grandfather never appreciated this relationship and didn’t want us to be together, he wanted to take Yelan back to China. But her Visa got cancelled and she had to stay back in India, about which I was happy! We both then wanted to get married. Yelan – My first visit in India was Chennai. We stayed at my grandfather’s friend Ramchandran, who was Rajiv Gandhi Peace award winner. From Chennai, we went to Delhi and stayed in Gandhi foundation and from there; we went to Sevagram, where my grandfather wrote a lot of articles on Gandhi. We lived there for three years. Like Kranti said, I came to India with my grandfather. He studied in Shanti Niketan with Ravindranath Tagore. He then became a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and Sabarmati ashram. He was a celebrated Journalist from Singapore (who worked for Nanyang newspaper). Chinese didn’t know much about India then, so my grandfather’s ambition was write about Indian history and civilization. He also wrote about Mahatma Gandhi’s life and was also a part of his ashram. My grandfather passed away then. We got married in 1982. After working in Nagpur for five years, we got shifted to Hyderabad in 1988. Kranti – I started working for Reserve Bank of India and used to visit Begumpet quarters. I wanted to teach cycling to Jwala. We joined her 60 DECEMBER, 2011

‘Jwala’s mother – Yelan, won veteran woman Badminton championship in Hyderabad, two years back.’ there and I used to help her with her cycling classes. My visit to Hyderabad brought a lot of changes in me. I had quit smoking and joined the early-morning exercise sessions, but for some time; I started with just walking. It became monotonous and I wanted to jog but was a little shy, when someone saw me jogging on the roads. So I started doing that just before sun-rise at Hyderabad Public School which had a huge ground. One morning, I saw a man jumping across the compound wall into the ground. I had to stop immediately and pretend as if I was doing an exercise. Later, I realized that he was polio affected. That moment inspired me a lot. I gave a thought to myself – ‘If a physically challenged person can run, so can I.’ I soon started running bravely without any shyness. Jwala – Initially, I was into Gymnastics and Tennis, but my Mom advised me to skip to Badminton. My Mom was a good Badminton player too, playing for her school. She lived in Tian Jin which was a Union Territory in China. It was then a compulsion that every school student should be into sports and fitness. She also played Basketball for two years. After college, she came to India and was into sports when we settled in Hyderabad too. I have always been into sports! I first visited LB Stadium in 1989 and under the guidance of SM Arif (a Dronacharya awardee),

Jwala receiving the honours from Pratibha Patil I learned Badminton and from then, there was no looking back. My coach played a vital role in my success so far. I have travelled a lot on a professional basis, but London is somewhere I enjoyed a lot! It’s a perfect holiday destination. It has great places to shop and hang out at. I feel more relaxed there and wish to visit London again when I find time. Insi – I am proud of Jwala’s achievements as a sportsperson. We are more like friends than sisters. Our bonding is amazing! I miss her when she is away from India due to tournaments. Though we argue a lot about things, we love each other and I guess that’s how sisters are. We shop together. Though we have an age gap of eight years; she takes advises from me, at times.

Jwala & Insi sharing a light moment

‘I had started practicing at the age of four. My Dad always wanted me to be a sportsperson. Not a hobby or a pastime, but right from the day one; I always took Badminton as a profession and nothing less than that. I still play Tennis, Cricket and Volleyball when I get time.’ - Jwala DECEMBER, 2011 61

Before And During The Wars... ALFA ROMEO 8C 2900 B

O

ne of the most elegant and proven supercars to arise out of the 1930s was the 2900B. It was Alfa Romeo’s most prestigious grand touring car and was based on their successful motor sport engineering. On the track, the 2900 competition cars benefited from a decade of Alfa Romeo progress and became the most successful of their time. A trio of 2900As placed first-second-third at the 1936 Mille Miglia, while three specially built 2900MMs accomplished the same feat at the 1938 edition. The decision to make a roadgoing variant of these winning designs must have been easy. Called the 2900B, Alfa Romeo prepared around thirty slightly detuned 2900 chassis to receive some of the most exceptional Italian bodies. Both a 2800 mm short wheelbase (Corto) and 3000 mm long wheelbase (Lungo) were made available. Touring of Milan was responsible for almost the entire production of 2900B bodies and his flowing designs on the 2900B were his masterworks. Particularly striking was Touring’s exceptional Lungo Coupe which took advantage of the long chassis and exaggerated it with a huge rear overhang. In total, Touring constructed around 20 Spyders and 10 Coupes, while a unique and more garish grey cabriolet was designed by Pinin Farina as one of his first ever projects. Because of its high price, only 30 examples of the 2900B were completed for road use. After the war broke out and settled down, Alfa Romeo had a hard time living up to its glorious pre-war years.

BUGATTI TYPE 57C VAN VOOREN CABRIOLET

T

he Shah of Persia’s Bugatti was among the more spectacular designs fit on a Type 57 chassis. Mohammad Pahlavi was born the son of Reza Pahlavi who was the Shah responsible for the modernization of Iran and he took a keen interest in Automobiles. Mohammad took over his father’s role and led the petroleum-rich Iran from 1941 onwards. By 1979, conservative Muslims, led by the Ayatollah Khomeini, revolted and overthrew Mohammad’s dictatorship monarchy. Using the flowing lines of Figoni et Falaschi as inspiration, Van Vooren worked upon chassis #57808, a low slung Bugatti Type 57C. Bugatti contributed a Type 57C chassis that came equipped with a supercharger. It helped the car produce an impressive 175 horsepower (130kW) from a 3245cc (198 cu in) engine. Until 1979, the Shah’s Bugatti stayed in the Royal Court of Iran. Afterwards, the Ayatullahs, who had nearly scraped the car, sold it at a very low price. Fortunately, the buyer had the Bugatti shipped to the USA and saved it in the process. At that point, the car was heavily butchered to accommodate an American V8 until later shipped to England for a full rebuild by Rod Jolly Coach building and Louis Giron. After the restoration, the Shah’s Bugatti auctioned for $1,760,000 USD and has since changed owners several times. The car currently has a good home at the Petersen Museum in California alongside some of the most important cars in world. 64 DECEMBER, 2011

his Bucciali TAV (Traction Avant) Fleche d’Or (Golden Arrow), manufactured by the French brothers Albert and Angelo ‘Buc’ Bucciali, was a car far ahead of its time. Albert was a piano and organ constructor and a very talented fighter pilot. In their factory in Courbevoie the brothers; together with mechanical engineer Joseph Ksandr, started modifying road and racing cars from other manufacturers. Albert and Angelo became avid racers and the Buc name was soon after well established in the local racing scene. After producing some sporty cycle cars and compact road cars under the Buc brand name the brothers became fascinated by the low and sleek American front wheel drive cars of the mid 1920s. Front wheel drive technology was still experimental in those days and there were a number of difficulties yet to solve before front wheel drive cars could be presented for regular use. The Bucciali brothers decided to concentrate completely on developing a new chassis and drive system for front wheel driven cars. Because of the lack of a longitudinal drive shaft it was possible to fit the cars with very low bodies. A small number of them were fitted with very tasteful styled bodies by Saoutchik, set off by a large flying stork symbol on each side of the bonnet. This stork was the same as the one painted on the fuselage of Albert’s SPAD XIII fighter plane. The brothers never cared much about making money and the constant development of new technology rapidly depleted their funds. In 1932 a last new Bucciali model was shown, fitted with a V12 engine from Voisin and a striking 4-door sedan body by Saoutchik, which you see here. After that the Bucciali name disappeared from the car scene. While it is not exactly known how many of the Bucciali TAV models were produced; only two are known to still exist.

DIAMLER DOUBLE-SIX 50 (1926 – 1930)

D

espite offering numerous models and having royal support, Daimler wanted to take an extra step after Rolls-Royce released their featurerich Phantom in 1925. To stay competitive, Chief Engineer - Laurence Pomeroy decided to make the most of Daimler’s engineering and adopt sleeve valves in a new seven liter Double Six V12. To do so, he mated two existing 6-cylinder, 25/85 hp engines to a common aluminum crankcase and refined the sleeves to reduce oil consumption. Daimler is one of Britain’s oldest marques and has a history stretching back to the dawn of the automobile. Their very first cars were built under license from Gottlieb Daimler and quickly became official transportation for British royalty. Fit for kings, Daimlers were well appointed and this reputation was enhanced in 1909 with the adoption of sleeve valves. The Double Six is named after a taxable RAC rating of 50 hp, but the modern rating is somewhere between 130-150 bhp. Less than 10 cars were ordered with the Double Six 50 engine. Built in four banks of three cylinders, each block of the Double Six engine was independent with its own cooling, intake and exhaust system. It could be ordered in a variety of sizes and the option of regular poppet valves was available for more conservative customers. For others that were more ambitious, the seven liter Double Six 50 was the best, but only a few cars were ordered with it. Since these had one of the most complex motorcar engines ever made, they demanded equally as dramatic coachwork to surround it. DECEMBER, 2011 65

DELAHAYE 145 CHAPRON COUPE (1938 – 1946)

M

otivated by their racing success, Henri Chapron bought two used Delahaye Type 145 competition cars to re-body them in his own way. With performance credentials to win events like the Pau Grand Prix, this chassis was one of the fastest in its day - a very special Type 145 adorned with simple cigar bodywork won a million francs from the French government for breaking the speed record at Montlhery. With such a potent chassis and graceful body design to complement it, these two Coupes became Chapron’s masterwork. It’s obvious he had a keen sense to re-body Delahaye’s most sporting chassis, even if it meant including complicated racing engines which were difficult to repair. The first car, chassis 48772 entered shop in 1939, but wasn’t completed until after the war due to delayed payments. By 1951 the chassis was mated with its new body and it was shipped to New York. After a less than a year of driving, the used racing engine needed to be rebuilt. Unfortunately, the engine was never completed and the car sat dormant for twenty years. After its restoration, the car was shown at the 1985 Pebble Beach Concours with its striking blue/burgundy paint scheme which helped emphasize the embossed ridge of the fenders. Over the entire body a thin layer of pearl iridescence was painted under the clear coat which gave the car a distinct shimmer in direct sunlight.

MERCEDES BENZ 710 SSK TROSSI

T

here are few cars which are as dramatic as the Jonckheere Coupe. Its imposing length, menacing curves and oversize grill make most other pre-war cars look boring. And it certainly makes most other Rolls-Royces look staid by comparison. Furthermore, the benchmarks of size, stature, cost and risk will probably never be reached again. If we had to pick the most memorable Rolls-Royce, this would have to be it. Such a striking car would certainly have to have an eccentric owner and certainly be born in the Art Deco movement of the 1930s. The Jonckheere Coupe was very much a part of this movement with its stylish modernism and mathematical geometric shapes which were popular at the time. This is especially true of the car’s circular doors which give it a proper nickname - The Round Door Rolls. The doors, which are actually oval, required two half-moon pieces of glass that closed towards each other within a complex winding mechanism. Other details included sliding left and right sun vents, a sloping fastback profile and an enormous rear tail fin. Eventually the car made its way stateside and was saved by Max Obie before being scrapped. He restored the car in a brilliant hue of metallic gold and refurbished details like the silk headliner and seats which folded into beds. From here, the car was shown as a sideshow at fairs where anyone with a dollar well spent could have viewed the Coupe. After its freakshow days were numbered, the golden behemoth was stored away for long time.

The LG Optimus 3D features a tweaked UI that fortunately makes working with Android a better experience. This piece marks the start of collaboration between the MIH and the manufacture - Zenith. As explained by Zenith, the opportunity to integrate the annual calendar complication within the Zenith chronograph arises out of an agreement between the manufacture and the MIH which allows the museum to establish within its premises two permanent exhibitions on the theme of hours and seconds. The Captain Winsor Annual Calendar begins with Zenith’s El Primero automatic chronograph movement, produced by the manufacture inhouse for more than 40 years. The El Primero is the only series-produced movement to beat at 36,000 vibrations per hour, meaning the chronograph can time events to the nearest 1/10 of a second. Zenith reserves this automatic caliber for its own timepieces. The 42mm Captain Winsor model is equipped with the automatic El Primero caliber 4054 version with central chronograph seconds, continuous seconds at 9 o’clock and a 60 minute totalizer at 6 o’clock. The movement is decorated with côtes de genève and circular-graining and visible through the sapphire crystal case-back. To this caliber, Zenith adds Oechslin’s ingenious complication which displays the day of the week, date and month and that requires only one adjustment per year. To ensure excellent readability, this display is provided by three concentric discs. The outer disc shows the date, the middle one the month and the inner one the day of the week. This mechanism is both simple and complex - for 31-day months, the date disc moves the month disc forward; for 30-day months, the month disc makes the 31 jump.
