01 Reel REVIVE STUDIO BRIEF - TO BE OR NOT TO BE, The Case of Bengaluru’s vanishing single screen theaters.

MENTORS - Salila Vanka, Shalini Prakash, Debashree Pal and Aziz Rajani PROJECT TYPE - ARCHITECTURE IN URBAN CONTEXT VIII SEMESTER LOCATION - Ajanta Theatre, Ulsoor.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION - The Project envisions a transformative architectural intervention in the urban landscape of Bangalore. Focused on the preservation of cultural heritage, this project aims to retain the essence of a single-screen theatre while seamlessly integrating additional spaces that breathe new life into the site. The public building, would have an audio and video store, a captivating film museum, and recording and dubbing studios. The design prioritizes community engagement and encourages a vibrant mix of commercial ventures through thoughtful integration into the larger Ulsoor site plan.

THE WORLD OF

C I N E M A

WITH A DEBATE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SINGLE SCREEN THEATERS AND REASONS ON THEIR DECLINE, I DECIDED TO RETAIN THE PROGRAM OF THE SINGLE SCREEN THEATRE BUT ABANDON THE BUILDING DUE TO THE FIRE SAFETY.

In India, cinema transcends mere entertainment; it is a cultural phenomenon and a shared passion that unites people across diverse backgrounds.

The fervent craze for cinema in India reflects its profound influence, serving as a powerful medium that not only entertains but also shapes and mirrors societal narratives.

In my URBAN DESIGN PROJECT, titled “ReelRevive: A Cinematic Hub in Ulsoor,” I aim to revitalize and reimagine the urban fabric of Ulsoor in Bengaluru. Focused on preserving cultural heritage, the project incorporates the restoration of a single-screen theatre within a modern public building. Embracing a holistic approach, the design integrates spaces for leisure, celebration, and commercial activities, fostering community engagement. A key feature is the incorporation of natural ventilation through skylights and a brick screen, enhancing sustainability. The project envisions a dynamic and inclusive space where heritage and contemporary urban living harmoniously coexist, enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike.

The basement has parking for 50 cars and 70 two wheelers.

This floor has the AV store & the single screen theatre (220PAX).

NATURAL VENTIL ATION 1. Skylight above facilitates natural heating by allowing sunlight to penetrate and warm interior spaces.

2. Ground floor features a brick screen employing a water brick technique to cool circulating air.

3. Warmed air rises to the top floor, aided by wind passing through the brick screen, and exits through the balcony, creating an effective natural ventilation system that optimizes both solar energy and airflow for a comfortable living space.

The Ulsoor structure plan endeavors to redefine the urban landscape by marrying the preservation of cultural heritage with modern amenities. Central to this vision is the ReelRevive Studios, a public building housing a refurbished single-screen theatre, audio-video store, film museum, and cutting-edge recording studios.

Beyond its cinematic functions, the structure aims to foster public engagement, particularly for existing residents. By seamlessly incorporating informal street vendors, the plan not only supports local businesses but also creates a vibrant, diverse atmosphere. The design prioritizes leisure and commercial activities, providing a space where residents can congregate for cultural events, celebrations, and entertainment. Moreover, the integration of dedicated biking and pedestrian paths encourages sustainable transportation and enhances the overall connectivity of the area, fostering a more walkable and bike-friendly community. This multifaceted approach ensures that the Ulsoor structure plan becomes a dynamic and inclusive hub, blending heritage with contemporary urban living while enriching the lives of its residents.

02 AROGYA Kuteera STUDIO BRIEF - SANRACHNA, Reinstating Meaningfulness.

MENTORS - Dinesh Rao, Bikramjit C, Ajinkya K and Hiranmayi S PROJECT TYPE - META ARCHITECTURE and vernacular study VII SEMESTER LOCATION - The site Hoshahulalu in Mandya district is located 2 km away from the town Krishnaraj Pete in mandya district. The settlement has emerged historically around a temple (Lakshminarayana temple) which is belongs to 13th Century following the style of hoysala period.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION - The project in the village of Hoshahulalu is a modern healthcare facility thoughtfully designed by integrating vernacular elements discovered through in-depth studies. The architecture seamlessly weaves traditional design with contemporary healthcare needs, ensuring the comfort of the villagers. By incorporating the vernacular elements, the hospital becomes a familiar and inviting space for the community.

Additionally, the design includes dedicated areas for visiting medical teams and colleges to host health camps, promoting collaborative healthcare efforts. This project not only addresses essential medical needs but also aims to enhance community well-being by blending healthcare seamlessly into the village’s cultural fabric.

THE VERNACULAR OF

HOSAHOLALU

A DETAILED STUDY OF THE HOSAHOLALU VILLAGE WAS DONE AS A PART OF THE GROUP PROJECT WITH THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY DEFINED BY THE FACULTY.

The study was not limited to just the Architectural or Vernacular, but the scope extended to the CULTURAL and SOCIAL layers of the villagers to whom the project would cater to.

CONCEPT

The was to inculcate the all of the learnings from the vernacular study and incorporate a healthcare facility seamlessly into the rural fabric of the village without disturbing the spatial grain of the existing environment.

This was done here by following the lines of the locality and merging this new program into the land.

The edges of the building were made sure to blend with the streets like every other existing building did.

03 City MUSEUM STUDIO BRIEF - THE MUSEUM MILE. MENTORS - Deepa S, Janardhan KS, Mansi S Rao and S Madhuri Rao PROJECT TYPE - ABSTRACT CHARACTER OF ARCHITECTURE V SEMESTER LOCATION - Kasturba Road, Cubbon Park, Bengaluru.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION - This project envisions the creation of an iconic museum on Kasturba Road, seamlessly integrated into the cultural tapestry of the surrounding area, adjoining Cubbon Park. Situated amidst a collection of esteemed museums along the same road, this architectural endeavor aims to contribute to the rich heritage and intellectual landscape of the region. The design incorporates a distinctive site edge that not only beckons pedestrians into the space but also serves as a dynamic gathering area for the public. This edge is conceived as a multifunctional zone catering to the diverse needs of stakeholders, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility. By embracing nature as a key stakeholder in the project, the museum aspires to foster a sense of community and environmental consciousness.

A inaugurating the Museum Mile on Kasturba Road would serve as the cultural cornerstone of the area. Positioned at the commencement of this prestigious museum stretch, it would showcase a curated collection reflecting the city’s rich heritage, artistic evolution, and technological advancements. Drawing inspiration from neighboring museums like the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum and the Government Museum, this cultural institution aims to create an immersive experience for visitors. Through dynamic exhibits, interactive displays, and collaborative programs, the museum seeks to narrate the story of the city’s past, present, and future. With an emphasis on inclusivity and community engagement, the museum would act as a vibrant hub, fostering a deeper connection between the city’s residents and its cultural tapestry.

This project embarked on a conceptual exploration rooted in abstract symbolism, focusing on the effects and meanings of paradoxes. Identifying stakeholders such as LAND, COMMUNITY, MAPPING, PARADOX, MATERIALITY, and drawing inspiration from the song “Enjoy Enjammi,” the design aimed to reconcile opposing elements.

It prioritized inclusivity, leveraging MAPPING to weave cultural narratives and considered MATERIALITY for resonance.

This approach transformed the museum into a dynamic space, referencing the city’s identity and creating a multi-sensory experience for visitors.

M AT E R I A L I T Y The material palette for this project artfully combines limestone, wood, glass, and brick, creating a dynamic and harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

Limestone provides timeless elegance, wood adds warmth, and glass introduces transparency for a contemporary touch.

Contrasting with these elements, brick signifies heritage and grounding. This deliberate juxtaposition aims to embody the project’s conceptual exploration, offering a visually engaging experience that bridges the gap between the city’s architectural legacy and modern design.

L I G H T & V E N T I L A T I O N In designing the museum, meticulous attention has been given to optimizing natural light and ventilation, with a particular emphasis on the implementation of light shelves. The light shelf emerges as a pivotal design element, strategically positioned to harness abundant natural light while mitigating glare and unwanted solar heat gain. This architectural feature serves as a horizontal surface located above eye level, designed to bounce daylight deeper into the interior spaces. The light shelf achieves this through a combination of its form and reflective surfaces.

Light shelves, strategically positioned in the museum, serve a dual purpose.

Their reflective top surface redirects sunlight upward, preventing harsh shadows through effective diffusion. Acting as shading devices, they block direct sunlight from the lower windows, reducing glare and heat. This thoughtful integration optimizes daylight, creating a well-lit and comfortable environment that enhances the visitor experience and fosters a seamless connection between exhibits and the surrounding natural elements.

A seamless integration of the pedestrian pathway welcomes visitors informally into the museum site. This design not only invites people in but also creates casual and relaxing spaces at the edge, encouraging spontaneous engagement and enhancing the overall experience.
