In my third semester project for Material Studio, I chose to focus on the use of wood and stone in architectural design, drawing inspiration from the traditional building style known as Dhajji Diwari. This unique architectural technique, originating from Himachal Pradesh, involves constructing timber frames filled with stones and mud, emphasizing both structural strength and cultural heritage.

This studio project embodies an ‘Urban Insert’ initiative rooted in historical significance, set amidst ancient ruins in Mauritius. The objective was clear: conserve these historical remnants while designing a vibrant community that includes housing units, open spaces, and essential amenities. The site offered three distinct plot sizes: 1000 square meters, 500 square meters, and 100 square meters.

The institute, focused on carbon sequestration, is designed using materials such as brick and concrete. This choice reflects a blend of durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, aligning with our commitment to innovative research and sustainable practices within the built environment.
Surrounding the institute are three distinct courtyards: the Carbon Courtyard, Flora Courtyard, featuring mango and Nilgiri plantings.

FLORA COURTYARD
Flora helps protecting and restoring forests and other natural ecosystems are essential strategies for enhancing carbon sequestration and combating global warming.
MANGO COURTYARD
A mango tree can consume about 22 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year.
NILGIRI COURTYARD
A nilgiri tree can consume about 25W kilograms of carbon dioxide per year.

We implemented a kinetic fa cade model at the building en trance using Arduino motors. This interactive installation features moving elements controlled by Arduino technology, enhancing the facade’s dynamism and visual appeal.
