This portfolio intends to show my skill set, passion, and commitment to architecture. These are the selected works from during my undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Throughout my years at UIC, I have worked on many projects that taught me how architecture works in various ways. These projects have helped me grow and improve my skill set. All the work I have done so far made me fall more and more in love with architecture.

I am a highly motivated architect seeking a job to increase knowledge in all areas of architecture. I am detail-oriented, hardworking and offers strong attention to accuracy, extensive knowledge of multiple architecture software programs, and extraordinary teamwork abilities.

01 Stadium School

The concept of the architecture school is for the school to be a stadium or a theater. The two major ideas behind this concept are that the school is a community and everyone can see what the others are doing resulting in a hierarchy differently. There are two main staircases; the studio staircase and the communal staircase. On the studio staircase, the freshmen studios are located on the top and graduate studios are located on the bottom, so the freshmen can look down on their future projects. Underneath the studio staircase is a big lecture hall, and its roof is a reverse staircase. Opposite the studio staircase is the communal staircase which consists of the library, a cafe, and a lounge area. In the middle of these staircases is a courtyard that can also be accessed by the public. The courtyard can also be used for an allschool event as a stage, and all the staircases can be emptied for seating turning the whole school into a stadium or a theater. Surrounding the staircases are buildings used for circulation, bathrooms, classrooms, offices, and an indoor garden. The roof of the school is a repetition of barrel vaults varying in different sizes, which are mirroring what is happening on the ground level.

02 The Market

This project aims to have a market where the products are dropped from the top into chutes. The loading dock is on top of the store, creating a top of the house. The building is inclined so that the trucks go up the ramp and drop the products into the chutes. In the store underneath, the customers can place their carts under the chutes, which are 3 to 4ft off the ground, so the products would directly drop into the shopping carts. The idea of having products fall from the trucks into the shopping carts by the use of gravity is so that there is a minimum requirement for employees to carry the product and put it on the aisles. There is minimum effort for the customers to bring the product from the aisles and place it into their carts. Three types of chutes are placed in the market: an inclined chute, a straight chute, and elevators. The elevators are placed for heavier and bigger objects like TVs and furniture that can not be dropped from the top.

03 The Frame

This project emerged from the Chicago Steel Frame from the 20th century. The project was to design a frame of an eight-story building using elevators, stairs, lobby, and mezzanines. The main idea is to take elements from the Old Stock exchange building in Chicago and repeat these elements obsessively. This created the front facade carved in and angled to the sides. While the elevator is in the center, the stairs are on the front and back of the frame. Mezzanines are created on the second floor looking into the lobby, and there are mezzanines on every other floor. There is ventilation due to high ceilings and a courtyard that follows the square conditions.

04 The Walls

Fall 2018

This project focuses on solving the nine-square grid by dividing horizontal space using walls, columns, windows, and doors. I used the nine elements to create a space in a nine-square grid. I focused mainly on curved walls and repetition. Each curved wall has a column in the center, which explains the curve’s radius and dimensions. The curved walls are mirrored to create a defined path throughout the space. The difference in the wall heights makes the variation between open and closed spaces. The closed spaces have a shorter wall so that people can look over into closed spaces from the open areas. There are three entrances, which all lead to the center.

Encircling Circles

This studio focuses on Carthusian Monastery and explores collective living. The site of the Monastery is Struvident Island in Maine. The project’s main idea is that circles overlap with a big circle around them. The monastery is designed with thick walls overlapping each other and making hallways for circulation. There are three essential circles; the monk circle, the novice circle, and the communal circle consisting of the church and the refectory. The stables are divided into two and are placed on the side. The farm is the rectangular stripes around the monastery. The farm gets its irrigation from the canal that surrounds the monastery. The design of the monastery is dependent on what’s inside and what’s outside. The monks and the novice circle have a circular arcade with a courtyard in the center. The arcades overlap the communal circle lobby creating glass doors.

06 The Brick Wall

This project focuses on a curved brick taken from an arch of a Chicago apartment building. The brick is curved on one side, and the other side is a trapezoid/square with corners. The brick is used in the corners of the walls to form bends and change the direction of the wall. The walls include elbows due to the change in direction, and these elbows create interior spaces. One of the primary purposes of curved brick is to bend the corners smoothly without having the right angles. A wooden frame is placed, which works as a brace for the bricks. Diagonal bracing is placed for lateral support and is correlated to the ceilings. The frame incorporates diagonal bracing, vertical posts, and gridded patterns. The frame helps incorporate the roof into the design. The inner spaces have a lower ceiling, whereas the spaces on the ends of the pavilion have a higher ceiling. Seats are made on each end of the design for visitors to sit.
