Hi there! I’m Catherine Choi, Senior Editor in Chief of this year’s LION yearbook!

First and foremost, I’d like to thank everyone who has purchased a copy of the 2020 Lion Yearbook! Despite school closures causing a delay in the deliveries, our team has pushed through and worked tirelessly to present you another recollection of KGV's most memorable and cherished moments. Your support is greatly appreciated!

It’s been an honour and a pleasure working alongside the yearbook team for the past 2 years. My experience here has just been nothing short of amazing, but I would’ve never imagined we would be facing numerous obstacles this year; from political unrest to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s edition wouldn’t have been completed if not for my team, whom I am so thankful to have as support.

Aurelia Leung and Erika Lor — our two incredibly talented design heads who saved our team from emergency deadlines and whose designs never failed to impress, Shreeyas Mistry — the amazing photography head (and my unofficial secretary) who went all out in making sure each photo was of a high standard and who has been my constant pillar of support, Ashley Kwok and Jennifer Ding — our gifted editorial heads who I could always count on when it came to proofreading and organising any last-minute articles, and our diligent business/marketing head Tessa Tsui, who spent hours managing the finances, promotions, and sponsors to ensure the success of this yearbook. Last but definitely not least, I’d like to give a huge thank you to Mr Armstrong for saving us from all the unforeseen complications that came our way, and to each and every single member of the Yearbook Team for their hard efforts and dedication this year.

Although it’s been just 2 years, I’m saddened to say that my time here as the Editor in Chief has unfortunately come to an end. This year’s junior heads will be taking the reins over next year’s yearbook, who I’ve enjoyed working with and are undoubtedly more than capable of undertaking this timeless project in the years to come. Thanks guys, and good luck!

Hello! I am Shraavasti Bhat, this year's Junior Editor in Chief.

This year has been a challenging year with the school closure, COVID-19, and protests. However, I would like to thank the yearbook team who have persevered through these rough times to produce works and designs to the best of their ability. Despite the delay in production, I would also like to thank those who have purchased and continually supported the yearbook.

Considering this was my first year as part of the yearbook team, I would like to thank Catherine, Erika, Aurelia, and Shreeyas who gave me the opportunity to lead the yearbook team as the junior editor in chief. I would also like to thank Catherine for mentoring me, guiding me through the process, and providing her invaluable advice. Lastly, I would also like to thank Mr. Armstrong, who has supported us throughout the year and guided us through various challenges despite his workload.

The various delays and obstacles this year have challenged us to be more creative when developing content to adapt to several event cancellations, both internal and external. This has enabled us to be more flexible and produce a yearbook that is slightly different from previous years and maybe even more personal as students have submitted various creative entries that describe the personal and collective challenges they faced this year.

I hope that in my next year as Editor-in-Chief, I will be able to successfully guide the yearbook team to produce a quality publication. I would like to thank the junior heads, Kristy and Isabella for their amazing designs, the junior editorial heads, Faustina and Abhay who were challenged to develop new content in the face of several event cancellations, and the business & marketing team, who were still able to gather sponsors and manage the yearbook finances despite several delays. Furthermore, I hope to recruit the next editor in chief and sustain this KGV tradition. Thank you to all members of staff, students, sponsors, and parents who supported the yearbook this year!

It was the stillness above - skies dark and utterly silent - that made it all real. Through a surreality came understanding.

This was back in the early stages of Hong Kong's COVID-19 response: cross-border traffic was reduced to a trickle and flights in and out of the territory were mostly grounded. The city, like many others at the time, had slowed to a near stop. The impact of fear, health advice and imposed restrictions saw to it that the pulsing vibrancy of life right outside my windows slowed to nothing more than a residual inertia. The change was even more pronounced at night, when a sluggish tranquillity hung in the air, heavy and torpid, feeling almost viscous. And so it was, late one night, maybe early morning, that I was awake and converting lessons to an online, distance-learning mode and thinking, quite superficially back then, how strange this whole ''virus-thing'' had become. And then it hit me: silence. The completeness of it was what made itself known first. Silent skies and silent streets - as above, so below. It wasn't an absence of sound anymore, but a fullness of silence itself, as though it had material form: an entity. It was in that precise moment that the reality of the pandemic became truth; real and visceral. It was no longer abstract or hyper-sensationalised media fodder. It was life.

It felt strange. It felt frightening. It felt lonely.

And it was happening everywhere. All around the globe, skies were free of planes, streets were clear of cars, and people were at home. The world was on pause. There would be reports of blue skies where skies were rarely seen through polluting blankets of haze, of waters clearer than human memory could recall, of wildlife venturing deeper into now peaceful urban areas, and record-breaking lows in global ambient seismic activity; that daily noise of human activity that rattles the earth's crust had been hushed.

We were quiet.

Naturally, at KGV, we carried on. We'd faced crises before, and we were ready-enough to face this one. Focus on the core business of learning - this mantra has carried the school, staff and students both, through tumultuous times. Through devastating typhoons, social unrest and now, a global pandemic that closed the school for an unanticipated length of time. Events and activities were cancelled. Social interactions were relegated to digital meeting spaces. And the likelihood of producing the Lion Yearbook seemed much diminished.

But here it is. Testament to the resilience and tenacity of our students, the mammoth task of contacting sources, gathering information, synthesising photographic, editorial and design assets and putting together yet another full-length high quality publication gained momentum. The Yearbook Team, numbering in excess of fifty students, were unfazed by having to recoup months of lost time, or by recreating pages to ensure the pandemic didn't cut back our content regardless of the many cancelled events. They showed courage and commitment. And they inspired with their unshakeable dedication to making the worst of a situation work. I couldn't help but follow in their ambitious wake.

This 2020 Lion Yearbook edition will be different. In the pages that follow, there will be unexpected additions and unavoidable losses. There may be some glitches and oversights, and there may be some pleasant surprises. But whatever there may be, it is only through such an amazing team of young people who were not going to give up that the yearbook survived the year that ''almost wasn't''.

The extraordinary individuals behind these pages are beyond remarkable. Words do not suffice.

And at the heart of the team, my tireless Editors-in-Chief: Catherine Choi and Shraavasti Bhat, I must single out here if only to humbly express my gratitude for their work on what is a near-insurmountable challenge, even in a 'normal' year. For the year of 2020, their achievements are simply out of this world. They are the spirit of The Lion. Their roar is what made the Lion Yearbook possible this year, and what will ensure no darkening silence can fall so heavily from the skies again.

Every year, a group of exceptional KGV students from each house are chosen to showcase their impeccable dance skills in EOMD - “Evening of Music and Dance” - and compete against other houses for the trophy.

EOMD has always been one of KGV’s most highly anticipated events, where incredible dancers in each house unite their diverse talents to create a performance in just a few months. Thus, when the event’s cancellation was announced due to COVID-19, the dancers, tech crew and students alike all felt a deep disappointment.

Anywho, despite the quarantine period, EOMD participants continued to maintain their dancing skills through the use of dance videos and regular online team meetings hence, sustaining their team spirit! “Every meeting we had was so fun and different the people in the team is what makes this experience so enjoyable!” - Mika Zayco

However, the dancers quickly began to demonstrate their perseverance against this adversity and instead, reminisced over their joyous moments as a team. Although they weren’t able to display their performance, the time they spent together in their frequent rehearsals was a period to be cherished forever. The essence of this valuable experience is highlighted by Nightingale dance captain: “EOMD is not just about the dance itself but the team spirit we have and the memories we make together as a house.”

Moreover, the rehearsals provided students with the opportunity to gather in one place at least thrice a week to practise what they love, to bond with others who share the same passion as them and - well dance! The frequent gatherings allowed students to work with dancers of varying age groups, build stronger relationships with people within their house, and to put their creativity into action! Additionally, many of the new dance captains were able to learn from the experience they shared in choreographing, leading and organising a graceful performance.

Whilst people commonly view dance merely as a physical movement, the true significance of dance extends to a realm much beyond one’s body. Dance is an expression of one’s creativity, a meaningful form of communication between body and soul, and in many cases, one’s only escape from this tangled convolution we call ‘life’.

Cloaked in silence, systematic strategies are planned. Players march out into a mental war, wittily moving pieces across the board. As Bobby Fischer once said, “Chess is a war over the board. The object is to crush the opponent’s mind”. We live our lives, constantly at war, fighting for a role in society. Yet, what are we truly fighting? Our own minds? Our che consciences? With every move, a new trap is laid. ckm ate The lengthy twists and turns taken, eventually, ! lead to victory – victory over the board, victory over the opponent’s mind. The key to victory in life resides in the skill of balance – the balance between wit, commiseration, and solitude.

It is evident that life is a game of chess.

Every time Interhouse Basketball is held, students of all year groups will gather, buzzing with excitement and energy, to watch the best basketball talent KGV has to offer. Just one inch away from the sideline, players and spectators watch attentively and cheer for every made shot, lay-up, (fade-away) 3-pointer, steal, or block.cFrom the House Captain's perspective, it was very eye-opening to see the passion in the player's eyes on and off the court. On the court, the five-man squad played to the best of their ability. On the bench, the players were cheering on their teammates and were eager to step foot onto the court. During half-time and timeouts, everyone would gather in a huddle to listen to our observations and advice as well as constructive input from the players on the court. To see this level of cooperation and commitment was humbling. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the event for turning Interhouse Basketball into the event it has become: a basketball spectacle that promotes friendly yet fierce competition between the Houses and attracts a diverse range of students. Special thanks to Mr. Corrigall for organising all the Interhouse Basketball events.

Additionally, during the period of online learning, the Maths Department connected students to highly insightful Mathematical lectures from esteemed professors at Polytechnic University. This enabled students to relate their knowledge of Maths to more sophisticated and exciting concepts, such as Computation and Statistical Reasoning. Not only that, but students have also been spending their time at home preparing for international competitions such as UKMT and Math Olympiad, which will take place in June!

As there are consequently no results to debate over with exemplary sportsmanship, I present my humble narrative:

It is the year 2089, and the champions of the 2019 inter-house cricket tournament could very well be champions no more, as they face the challenge of their lives. Sweat dripping from their foreheads, the champions warily gazed at the competitors from the other three houses, who stared daggers at them, still bitter from their humiliating defeats of 2019. For the other three teams, their time had come. It was their time to take the championship.

First up was Upsdell versus Nightingale. The nostalgia was almost unbearable as the smell of astroturf rubber could be smelt under the sun. One of the captains dug into their worn khaki pants: a true relic, yes, one without the flashing gold KGV lion on it, and flipped a rusted coin, pulling on his finely waxed moustache. Unbelievable, a coin in this modern world of galactic credits. Upsdell was to start batting. After an overly firm handshake, the cricketers rushed to their posts as the adrenaline ran through their veins. The time had come, they thought. Victory would surely be theirs...

If there is one thing that this pandemic has taught us, it is the fact that, as the old saying goes, “change is the only constant.” Whether it is getting used to ‘home learning’, or altering the ways in which we interact due to social distancing, we have all had to adapt as a result of the circumstances that we have found ourselves in. If anything, these changing times are emblematic of sports, where every game is different, and a team’s fortunes can turn on a dime, forcing players to adapt constantly in order to win. e

However, with the announcement of the extension of the school closure, they knew in the back of their minds that the event was going to be cancelled. One would expect them to be disappointed and frustrated, and yes, a little disappointment was inevitable, but rather remarkably, they treated this as a chance to train harder and make next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Interhouse Football the most exciting event KGV has seen. A TASTE OF CAMBODIA Cambodia is a cultural diamond that tempts with its rich history, intrigues with its streaks of tragedy, and shines with the glittering beauty of its lush verdant forests, the biting redness of the earth and its awe-inspiring, intricately designed religious structures.

Aside from sightseeing and exploring the city of Siem Reap, we got the chance to help local communities.

In three days, we built a house for a family of four, giving them shelter from sporadic bouts of torrential rain and the harshness of the elements.

We were also given the opportunity to teach English to primary school students, which was incredibly rewarding.

Much like the dust that whipped past our faces on the tuk-tuk rides as we stared into the Cambodian cityscape, the trip went past in a blur.

And what a trip it was.

Drawings come to life, doodles walk across the screen, and cartoons speak with the voices of their creators. And no, it’s not sci-fi -- it’s Animation Bootcamp.

Far from spending Challenge Week sketching stick men, animators learned about the 12 principles of animation, created abstract animation (“There was no guide on how to do it!” someone grumbled), and synchronised their own voices to the characters they had created. Even getting animations to walk had to be learnt from scratch. “Wait, I have to learn how to walk... All over again?”

To those with a passion for dancing, the “Dance Around the World” activity has been an excellent opportunity for students to hone their dancing skills. A tiring but rewarding ordeal, participants switched between seven different dancing styles with two hours to learn each dance. At the end of the week, the dancers performed a combination of dancing styles (a trip ‘around the world’) to parents and other students. This year’s participants advise future dancers to not feel nervous and express themselves freely.

LION 2018 TEMPLATE

Shakespeare lived his life in the 16th century but what would happen if he were around today in 2019? Drama by Faust gave students the thrilling opportunity to re-create one of Shakespeare’s plays with a modern twist. They were tasked with creating and performing a 20-minute-long play by the end of the week.

The students played amusing games in small groups to learn each others’ names and to develop their theatrical skills. They then got together into groups to create a teen drama that would showcase a modern version of Shakespeare. Planning, imagination, and social skills were pieced together to create the foundations of the play - ideas soared in the air.

On Friday, it was presented to a live audience.

The students mastered the art of becoming one with their character and building up confidence.

Their nerves trickled away as they performed.

Shakespeare was whisked from the past to modern times by a group of imaginative students!

From staying with only German-speaking families to outdoor ice-skating, it was definite that the Munich and Lindenberg language immersion trip was a spectacular experience for all. Although our daily morning courses focused on enriching our ‘Deutsche’ speaking and listening skills, in the evenings, we were given opportunities to build our knowledge of the exquisite German culture.

Not only was the trip packed with memorable local activities such as enduring city walks whilst munching on fresh pretzels, but it was also abundant in visits to iconic landmarks, such as the Disney-esque Neuschwanstein Castle.

Amongst our multiple authentic experiences, we witnessed the state-of-the-art Allianz-Arena, as we walked through the entryway that footballers step through before every match.

“Let’s stay here!” A student exclaimed, dreading to return to the endless amount of homework waiting in Hong Kong.

A Perseverance. Risk analysis. Communication.

These terms had been drilled into our minds as a result of the exhausting yet wondrous week of hiking, flying drones and editing. “Stay hydrated!”, Ms Sutton had repeatedly exclaimed as we hiked over the steep terrain whilst taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Throughout the five days, we have learnt how to fly and navigate our drones through a couple of Hong Kong’s top hiking trails in pursuit of capturing the striking view that we often take for granted. Not only did the activity require skill, but a passion for hiking and experimenting with drones, which were crucial in fuelling our determination to get the best shots. Despite the fact that we faced multiple challenges - especially mastering the technique of attaining the best possible proximity, altitude and velocity on top of a mountain - it truly was an incredible experience.

Bombarded with a plethora of sights, sounds, and aromas at every moment, our trip to India was truly an amazing experience.

One of the major highlights of the week were the architectural wonders.

To some, the best part about Challenge Week is the process of giving back to the global community. We filled our days by making bricks out of soil, water, sand, and straw. These bricks would form a dormitory to house students, who have to walk over two miles to get to school every day. To others, Challenge Week is about pushing our

personal physical boundaries, whether it’s trekking across luscious mountains or swimming in a crystal blue waterfall. In addition, this trip is unrivalled to any other high school Credits: Yumi Horiba experience because of its emphasis on immersing our city-pampered selves into the traditional Laos life through home-cooked meals, bucket showers, and early nights. But undoubtedly, the best part of this year’s Laos trip was ‘braiding Mr Thomson’s beard’ (Jun Lim).

Known for its baroque architecture and charming small-town ambience, Salamanca really is a place out of a fairy tale. Here, students had the pleasure of visiting beautiful cultural and historical sites, including The Plaza Mayor and the Sierra de Francia.

Football enthusiasts were glad to hear that a trip was to be taken east, to Madrid, where the Santiago BernabĂŠu Stadium is situated.

The football stadium is one of the most well known sporting venues in the world, having hosted the European Cup on multiple occasions and also the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Spanish study sessions lead by native Spanish teachers took place every morning, with cultural activities being held in the evenings.

Students stayed with local host families to truly immerse themselves in the Spanish language and culture. Although this really pushed them out of their comfort zones, students said the homestay was a very rewarding experience and the memories they made are indelible.

Year 13 is tough. The onslaught of assessments, the overwhelming task of university applications, and the ominous mock exams looming ahead make any break seem sacred. Luckily, KGV didn’t cancel Challenge Week for Year 13s. Instead, they provided US & UK University Applications - a golden opportunity for those who were in dire need of a mental, though still productive, break.

The Careers Department supported the students in answering all questions and ensuring that their applications were completed correctly.

Perhaps this activity was the antithesis of a challenge; its purpose was to alleviate anxiety, especially with the mindfulness and relaxation sessions. As Yasmin Gooch says, “This week was absolute class.”

Always a riveting duel of words, this year’s Model United Nations at KGV did not disappoint.

Though unable to compete with other schools this year, the school round was nevertheless an engaging experience. With many new faces attending and with the new chairs’ first time hosting the activity, the year was filled with excitement. The negotiations became more animated as the new delegates began to gain confidence, and the sessions became increasingly interesting.

“The enthusiasm shown by our delegates despite the palpable tension and apprehension in the room was, hopefully, a clear sign of the enthusiasm that our generation would go on to treat international relations and politically divisive matters, and in the end, we'd created a playful atmosphere for our delegates to explore the boundaries of their oratory skill and logical reasoning” - Irisa Kwok, (KGVMUN team chair)

WORLD SCHOLAR'S CUP

The debate was centred on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where the highlight of the session was a bold move from the delegate of Japan, challenging the delegate of Palestine, a central conflict participant, to a one-on-one duel of the debates. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience for all participants. As for the future, Joaquin hopes that the activity can expand further and for more to participate.

“The basketball teams had two coaches, Mr. Corrigall and an external coach, which was extremely valuable as we received different approaches to the training and more insights on how to improve.

Our team was amazing, consisting of not only great individual players but also team players. We were able to push each other and motivate each other to get better. Although we made it to playoffs for the HKSSF tournament, it has sadly been cancelled because of COVID-19.

Overall, it has been a great experience to play basketball at KGV and I will miss it a lot.”

While we weren’t able to play out the entire season, this year was otherwise a great one for the Senior Boys Cricket Team. Our weekly training paid off, as we won each and every one of our four matches in Division One of the Secondary School’s League, including a razor-thin four-run victory against IKTMC. Special thanks to Mr Duddy and Mr Beard for coaching us to success!

Girls’ cricket has 20+ members who train regularly.

It consists of students from a range of age groups and skills set to ensure a sense of continuity when members graduate. In the beginning, balls were thrown in every direction, and batting was erratic, yet week by week, the girls quickly improved and built confidence.

Our first match was a friendly fixture against another school team. Although we lost, the girls were able to test their skills in a competitive setting, and the experience brought the team together and taught the students the importance of great teamwork. Unfortunately, COVID-19 took away the opportunity to further test our skills, but the fun we had working as a team, and learning and achieving the techniques we needed was a reward in itself. In the past two years of coaching, we have been proud to see the great improvement, commitment and dedication among the girls in the team. We have had such as blast running KGV Girls’ Cricket and being able to use our passion to teach others was a touching and memorable experience.

We have full faith in our upcoming co-captains, Diya Sanghavi and Zara Haider, as well as in the girls who have persevered throughout the events this year and continued to practice the sport we all love.

Interschool Cross Country, an extremely competitive annual event, connected hundreds of students from a total of 28 schools to compete for victory. Not only does this esteemed event serve as a platform for students to exhibit their highly developed track skills, but it also allows students from various schools to interact with a range of people and build new friendships. In fact, many participants anticipate this event purely for the sense of connection and the rush of adrenaline attained by watching people race, cheering on teammates, and conversing with newfound friends.

However, aside from the jollity, when asked about what she would do differently next time, Charmaine Chan, a prodigious racer, says, “Next time, I hope to perform as well I did in training so that I can have no regrets throughout the competition.”

Nevertheless, despite the excessive pressure to do well, Charlie Hall from the A Grade girls team achieved the honoured rank of first place amongst 104 runners!

It was proud seeing how the team played and conducted themselves this year in what were often frustrating circumstances both due to repeatedly postponed fixtures and refereeing decisions that made one question the reliability of Darwinian evolution.

LION 2018 TEMPLATE The A-grade football is a collection of professional footballers masquerading as IB & BTEC students to improve their street cred and make their lives more stressful. Many of the team have been playing football for KGV for many a year, some of them played even before that going back as far as the days when Alex Gannon and Ismet Ozer both learnt how to kick a ball before they could walk. Rumour has it that Brad Yue and Theo Ivarsson had diapers sponsored by Nike and Stanley Banburyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pacifier was shaped liked a football boot. The likes of Kayan Sayeed and Roshan Mistry were now regulars in the first time after their record-breaking transfers from Island School and A-grade finally had a reliable keeper in the likes of Ernie Chu. Other pre-season transfers were not quite as successful with certain individuals having difficulty locating the KGV pitch after getting lost leaving the SSC, but Nick Bradley was a successful acquisition from Shatin College. Suvir Sujanani and Faiz Khusro both broke back into the side and the promotions of Oli Weston Flores, Tanush Narwani and Nick Gerigk from B-grade was a game changer. Committed and memorable appearances in both training and games came from Michael Lim, Chirag Engineer, Kiya Sayeed, Alex Longbottom, Rafael Nunez, Rohan Ganglani, Matthias Park, Shrish Venus and Absaar Ahmed and in the hour of need Redmond Tang and Anders Lam also stepped up.

Ultimate Frisbee has taught me that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more to a game than winning. The positive in-game atmosphere is a result of the heavy emphasis on spirit.

The sport does not employ referees, instead relying on integrity and sportsmanship to enforce rules - this is called "Spirit of the Game".

As such, there is a fuller sense of community whether it be friendlies or tournaments. There's nothing quite like it.

Representing KGV in the 2019 Hong Kong Inter-School Gymnastics Competition was an exhilarating experience. Our team trained for months, perfecting our routines.

Although we were one member down due to Poppyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leg fracture, our spirits were high as she continued to cheer us on.

One of my favorite things about being a part of the KGV team was mutual support from teammates before we took our turns on the floor and vault. This was one of the driving forces that led us to win first place overall in Hong Kong for our age group. Ultimately, despite training being tiring and painful, our performances and competition scores rendered all the hours well worth it.

Our A Grade Lacrosse team set foot in the HKSSF Lacrosse tournament for the first time this year. They came out strong and finished 2nd overall, losing a remarkably close match in the finals. Each game presented itself with its nerve-racking challenges. However, every challenge brought more confidence and experience resulting in the team’s fantastic achievements.

Dedication, discipline and drive � the KGV netball team is a true reflection of these qualities. Following months of intense training under Ms Gallie’s professional guidance, the girls learned many new netball skills and were eager to put them to use in the HKSSF netball games. The A grade team ranked 6th overall, and although the results of the competition were not as they had hoped, they nevertheless enjoyed the whole experience. A grade team member Helena Tang says, “We may not have played as many games as we wished to, but we put our all into every game and enjoyed every second of it! In the end, having fun is far more important than the score!”

LION 2018 TEMPLATE Rugby has always been an integral part of KGV sport. KGV has produced countless prolific rugby teams and this year was no different. Both the A grade boys and A grade girls team won all games except one. The A grade girls team also won the CDNIS invitational tournament.

When asked about the secret to their success, the team replied, “We have to thank Mr Muncer and Ms Howells for their endless support this season.

Without them, we would not have achieved what we achieved!” The hard work and dedication from both the students and the staff is truly laudable!

This year’s KGV Swimming Team had a full assortment of different feelings throughout the year from coming second in the ESF Swimming Gala to crossing fingers for the Girls team who had just been promoted to Division 1. The KGV Tennis Team is the definition of inclusive - it is open grade hence, it has both recreational and nationally competitive players from all year groups.

This approach has definitely paid off as displayed by the spectacular teamwork, mature attitudes and skills of the members during practice. Despite the school suspension which prevented the team members from competing in any tournaments, Captain Shraavasti Bhat (of the Girls Tennis Team) confidently states that she “saw a lot of potential” and hopes to progress to Division 1. KGV is rooting for you!

The Volleyball Team considers skill level second to building a tight-knit group and “friendships that will last a long time”. This belief paid off as the team started the year off victoriously by winning the ISSFHK U20 volleyball game. The 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race is always a fun and exciting event, and this year was no exception. Whilst the regatta was happening on the water, the bustling race village on land was chock-full of with food and drink, retail shops and fun games. The weather was cloudy and the wind was blowing hard, just perfect conditions for a thrilling and exciting race. The race lasts 24 hours with shift changes every 2 to 4 hours. When a shift is up, the sailors on the dinghy would come alongside the pontoon to swap out, where the next shift would be eagerly waiting to get their share of the action. We were quite short on numbers this year, but this was not a problem because this led to more hours and more time for the people who did sign up to sail. Unfortunately, towards the end of the race, the wind got too strong for many of our sailors to handle, so after assessing all aspects of safety, we decided to retire early. Next year we hope to have more people signing up, for great fun for a great cause. All the sign up fees go to charity and a portion of all the spending on food and drinks goes to all the charities too.

charity committee The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage on, and any semblance of normality in our lives has all but vanished from sight. There’s no doubt that these past few months have been at least somewhat difficult for all of us. But at the same time, we must still spare a thought for those in society that are most vulnerable, and take action to make their lives easier. That’s where we, the Charity Committee have attempted to play a role.

This year, the committee is working with our four school charities: Mother’s Choice, SPCA, Make a Wish, and Plastic Free Seas. Our main goals are to both raise awareness of the causes that these charities fight for, and to organise events that raise money for them.

Our core PHE/PSHE has been remodelled this year to teach the skills needed to form positive relationships, to be emotionally resilient, to be healthy in body and mind, and to not just survive but flourish in the wider world. Our annual school events aim to foster acceptance and an understanding of others, and bring to the forefront of our minds that there is a lot more to each individual than what we see on the surface.

Wellbeing at KGV is really down to each member of our community looking out for others. Every day in school, it’s the students and staff who create our culture of care. It’s okay to be vulnerable, it’s okay not to be okay. We all need support at times, and at other times we are the ones who are able to give support. But it’s not just about helping when times are bad; wellbeing is also about going from good to great.

In 2019, the new Wellbeing Ambassadors had a simple vision: to spread the universal message of kindness that is often forgotten in today’s hectic world. As a team, we immediately jumped into action, designing and producing hundreds of ribbons in yellow and purple for Kindness Week.

Through the sales of ribbons, pens, and crafts produced by the Kowloon City Children & Youth Integrated Service Centre, at KGV and JCSRS, over $1200 was raised for charity. A gratitude wall located in Leo’s Cafe was also filled with students’ heartwarming messages to peers, staff, and family.

Building from the successes of Kindness Week, the team then went on to organise “Odd Socks Day” in honor of the World Mental Health Day on October 10th. Presentations were given on suicide prevention during tutor time, with the aim to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Students and staff came together to support the cause: the odd socks stall sold out in just 15 minutes, and socks of all colours, patterns, and lengths could be seen on campus.

WELLBEING

Fast forward to 2020 - the new team of Wellbeing Ambassadors sought to cultivate upon last year’s foundations. By attending Project Blue Sky, an international Wellbeing Initiative held at Kellett School, members were able to interact with other schools and gain new perspectives on Mental Health.

Odd Socks for Odd Days, Kindness Week, and Mental Health Awareness Week, ran successfully this year, adapting to being held online due to school closures. Our new cohort of Wellbeing Ambassadors stepped up to the challenges of peer support in this environment. They have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to promote and share positive messages of wellbeing, especially on Instagram. If you haven’t followed #kgvwellbeing yet, do it now!

Above all, the ambassadors are the most grateful for being able to get to know the KGV community on a more intimate level. Through peer mentoring students, the team has become a prime source of comfort and healing for all year groups.

No matter what hardship you may be going through, whether it be bullying, friendships or academics, the Wellbeing Ambassadors are here to listen.

We learned at the first wellbeing conference held for students in Hong Kong, The BlySky Symposium, that KGV is very much at the forefront of wellbeing provision among international schools, in terms of our counselling support, wellbeing centre, student initiatives, and curriculum and pastoral care. We are proud of this, and we hope you are proud to be a part of it too.

From holding regular training sessions and organizing events, without her all of this would not be possible without.
