This document includes research on contemporary retail design with the intent to design an athletic apparel and sports equipment store.

In the contemporary retail landscape, the ascent of efficient, user-friendly, and personalized online shopping experiences has prompted a noticeable shift in consumer behavior. The allure of the virtual marketplace, characterized by convenience and personalization, has led to a decline in in-store shopping, contributing to the closure of numerous businesses and subsequently impacting the economy adversely. Recognizing this challenge, this research endeavors to address the core problem by proposing a distinctive and interactive user experience within in-person retail spaces. The goal is to create an immersive shopping environment that not only rivals but surpasses the conveniences offered by online platforms. By introducing unique experiential elements, this research seeks to rekindle the appeal of in-person shopping, emphasizing the intrinsic value that physical retail spaces can bring to consumers, thereby fostering a revival of businesses and contributing positively to the economic landscape.

This research seeks to delve into the user experience-focused methodology in designing retail consumer spaces. The study’s objectives encompass comprehending the nuanced experiences and their individual impact across generations. Additionally, it aims to assess a proposed user-centric framework through case studies, specifically examining flagship stores within the same segment situated in comparably large cities, allowing for a contextually rich analysis. The study focuses in identifying factors across three phases of experience focus that significantly contribute to users’ personal experiences. It highlights the pivotal role of spatial elements, including innovative store layouts, lighting and ambiance, comfortable and inviting spaces, interactive displays, and more. These factors are recognized as catalysts for generating experiences at distinct intervals throughout each customer’s unique journey.

Soho, located in Lower Manhattan, boasts a diverse and storied cultural history that spans centuries.

Before its industrial transformation, Soho was a residential neighborhood in the early 19th century.

Gradually, as industry expanded in the city, manufacturing and commerce replaced many residential structures. Originating as an industrial hub in the 19th century, its cast-iron architecture became emblematic of its character. However, it was in the mid-20th century that Soho underwent a transformative artistic renaissance, attracting a wave of creatives seeking spacious loft spaces.

This era solidified Soho as an avant-garde art haven, marked by the establishment of numerous galleries and studios. The subsequent decades witnessed gentrification and commercialization, turning Soho into a fashionable district, yet the preservation of its historic architecture in 1973 ensured the retention of its unique character. Today, Soho stands as a dynamic neighborhood, seamlessly blending its industrial past with contemporary influences, offering a vibrant mix of art, fashion, and culture that continues to captivate residents and visitors alike.

This commercial space is one of the largest in the surrounding area, offering a great flagship opportunity. REEBOK FLAGSHIP STORE The new Reebok flagship store presents a unique concept, “Superhero Re-landing,” deviating from traditional sportswear functionality to incorporate daily fashion trends.

Positioned strategically in a high-traffic area, it’s large branding beckons curiosity and foot traffic. Inside, the space is meticulously divided into a signature sneakers zone with a striking glass and lighting floor, showcasing both classic and functional lines, while the apparel zone features intentionally broken concrete walls with metallic finishes, symbolizing Reebok’s high-tech identity in alignment with contemporary street fashion. This unique design visualizes a superhero unveiling their original costume, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to embracing change and differentiating itself in a saturated sports brand market.

The sneaker zone utilizes glass flooring and lighting to showcase both the rising classic line and the functional line.

Walls in the clothing and accessories zone intentionally feature broken concrete walls with metallic finishes, representing Reebok’s high-tech identity. Reebok successfully emphasizes their commitment to embracing change and showcasing its distinctive qualities amid the saturated sports brand market.

From the star-lit entry way to the private washing spaces, every detail aims to transition users from the chaos of urban life to a peaceful haven. Inside the Dreamery, an artfully arranged landscape of sleep-pods, accompanied by a gentle grid of lights, creates an escape, establishing an unforgettable connection between the brand and consumers. 1. How is experience generated in a space, and what role do spatial elements play in this process?

Response 1: An experience is generated based on the elements in the space. You can have a huge square space but all of the elements that you add into it provide the experience. Elements include decor, wall dividers, ceiling elements, lighting, signage, props, etc.

Response 2: Experience in a space is generated through a combination of sensory perceptions, emotional responses, and cognitive interactions with the environment. Spatial elements in interior design enhance the experience by ensuring functionality, aesthetics, comfort, smooth flow, ambiance, and most importantly personalization of the space. Thoughtful arrangement of furniture, lighting, and consideration of scale contribute to a balanced and inviting environment.

2. What is the experience-focused approach to the interior design of retail spaces, especially considering the subjective nature of experiences?

Response 1: Through guest experiences, gathering feedback before - to understand whats needed, etc.

Response 2: Experiences are subjective, so incorporating a variety of customer preferences, including technology integration, adaptable design for changing needs, a dynamic and evolving experience, storytelling, and personalization, acknowledges the subjectivity of experiences.

This strives to create a space that resonates intimately with individuals.

3. How do interior designers address the challenge of designing experiences in retail stores when experiences are inherently subjective?

Response 1: Think of things that catch the eye or invite guests in such as wall colors, ceiling heights, carpet, or flooring.

Response 2: By understanding the target audience and their preferences. This involves conducting proper user research to gather insights into the diverse needs, behaviors, and expectations of customers.

4. How do micro-experiences in a retail store contribute to brand building, and what types of experiences are deliberately designed?

Response 1:You’re setting yourself apart from competitors by being unique. It can be an exciting place to shop due to those different micro experiences provided. For certain companies, having food samples is deliberate to provide a better connection to the brand. In-store marketing would be something deliberate & intentional.

Response 2: Micro-experiences in a retail store play an important role in brand building by shaping customers’ perceptions. Elements like layout, lighting, and staff interactions collectively create a unique atmosphere. Small interactions contribute to a lasting brand impression and customer loyalty.

5. In your opinion, what aspects of the in-store shopping experience create a unique connection between customers and the brand, distinguishing it from online platforms?

Response 1: We easily have things online for guests to purchase for convenience, but to build a connection with guests sometimes you may see selfie stations with brand launches that you can’t do online. Promotional giveaways are done in person during a specific time to bring people in, provide samples to guests, etc. Being able to touch and see things are important and connect guests back to a brand.

Response 2: The in-store shopping experience provides a physical environment where customers engage with the brand. This environment allows for an essence of escape from the digital realm, creating a tangible and immersive atmosphere that online platforms often lack.

Additionally, the ability to experience products firsthand, feel materials, and assess textures fosters a deeper connection by appealing to sensory perceptions, offering a level of interaction that online shopping can’t fully replicate. This tactile engagement adds value and authenticity to the customer’s relationship with the brand.

6. How do engaging spaces contribute to the overall generation of experiences, and what are the different types of experiences one can encounter in a retail store?

Response 1: The multiple experiences one could have can consist of the following: layout & aesthetic - is it inviting & welcoming, does a guest feel good when they enter, shopping experience (product displays, mannequins, etc.), live events, customer service experience, checkout experience, fitting room experience, interactive experiences (TVs, displays, tablets, kiosks, etc.)

Response 2: Environments that captivate customers play a pivotal role in shaping their overall encounter, leaving a lasting imprint on their memory and perception. Think of a retail space as a canvas where each element, from design to interactivity, contributes to crafting a distinctive narrative. Various retail experiences range from sensorial journeys, where the ambiance and scents immerse customers, to dynamic engagement through interactive installations that encourage hands-on participation, fostering a sense of discovery. Ultimately, it’s about weaving a tapestry of unique moments that resonate with individuals and make their visit more than just a transaction.

7. How do multiple micro-experiences come together to create a cumulative macro-experience in a retail store?

Response 1: It gives a surprise and delight. It can be an inclusive experience for many vs exclusive. It can bring together a diverse customer base.

Response 2: I believe micro-interactions should blend seamlessly, creating a holistic journey for the customer. For instance, a welcoming entrance sets the initial tone, engaging product displays sustain interest, and efficient customer service solidifies a positive impression, culminating in an overarching macro-experience that reflects the brand’s identity and leaves a lasting impact on the shopper 8. What strategies do you believe could encourage customers to visit physical stores, emphasizing benefits such as sustainability, community, and personalized service?

Response 2: Hosting events, workshops, or collaborations that bring people together within the store space fosters a sense of community. When I worked at GUESS?, we would often hire a DJ to perform in the store on spontaneous weekends. This would leave an impression on customers. Personalized services, like tailored recommendations or exclusive in-store perks, also enhance the overall customer experience.

9. How do you currently integrate sustainable practices and eco-friendly initiatives in your physical retail spaces, and how do these efforts impact customer decisions to shop in person?

Response 1: Bring your bag initiatives - Aldi. Sams Club/Costco provides boxes. Packaging from a lot of places now arrives in reusable bags. Certain companies give people $1 off if you allow it to be shipped all together in one package vs. multiples. Product offerings are now made from sustainable materials. Varies throughout apparel, home goods, etc.

Response 2: Reducing energy consumption, and adopting recycling programs are tangible steps.

Communicating these efforts through signage, online platforms, or packaging reinforces a commitment to sustainability, potentially attracting environmentally conscious customers.

10. How do you gather feedback from customers about their in-store experiences, and what changes or improvements have you implemented based on this feedback to enhance the appeal of shopping in person?

Response 1: Surveys are always great. Easy for guests and easy for companies to pull data. Some feedback you act on immediately, some for the future, and some is just informative.

Response 2: I start by gathering feedback from the staff, considering their experiences in their workspace. Employee satisfaction is crucial for a positive customer experience. I request feedback from customers through automatic online surveys, then I would compare results and analyze based off the common point of issues.
