The community will include a homeowner’s association and 13 acres of preserved open space for trotting around with one’s prized nags. A pasture will be included for them as well. Of course, Bridgehampton is known for equestrian properties, and is comparable to Wellington, Florida, when it comes to horse properties. The 23-acre subdivided farm is located on Windy Hill Lane, and an allée of specimen trees will greet homeowners. Hampton Pointe Construction is due to break ground on the first house by the end of September.

Parsons is a name that echoes down the centuries since the founding of the Long Island town of East Hampton. In 1676, for example, the then governor of New York demanded that all new settlers to the area be allowed thirty acres of land. A number of local landowners complained, among them Samuel Parsons. By 1880, when this farmhouse was built for Julius Parsons, seven generations of Parsons had already lived in East

The prolific artist is a pioneer of alternative printmaking and the originator of Solarplate Etching — a revolutionary printmaking technique that doesn’t use acids and other dangerous chemicals and which allows artists to create a range of imagery and prints that resemble etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, screen prints or photographs. Welden is showing no signs of slowing down. He recently participated in a live exhibition, “The Pianist, The Poet & The Painter” at LTV in Wainscott, and his work is currently on view at the Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue and the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery in Brookhaven. A master printmaker, author and Past President of the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Sag Harbor-based creator has travelled to 53 countries in support of his work and has taught thousands of others over the course of his prodigious career. Notably, he’s collaborated with and produced prints for the likes of Willem de Kooning, Elaine de Kooning, Eric Fischl, Kiki Smith, Robert Dash, Roy Nicholson, Dan Flavin, Jimmy Ernst, Esteban Vicente, William King, Kurt Vonnegut, Jane Freilicher, David Salle, Louisa Chase, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Larry Rivers, Jack Youngerman, and many others.

Sought out for his extensive knowledge, enthusiastic approach to art, and his genial disposition, Welden is a frequent lecturer and creative guide. He’s taught all over the world — from his early days as an art teacher in Long Island high schools to university stints at SUNY Stony Brook and others, and at a hugely popular “Printaganza!” workshop at The Church in Sag Harbor. He’s even got a printing press named for him at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Cuzco, Peru where he’s a Professor Emeritus.

bevy of Michelin star chefs is turning lower Manhattan into a restaurant hot spot. Uber chef Daniel Boulud, whose culinary empire stretches as far afield as Singapore and Dubai, fired the opening salvo with Le Gratin in the space formerly occupied by Augustine in The Beekman, a Thompson Hotel, an 11-minute walk from City Hall. “I had celebrated my birthday at Augustine and was familiar with the space,” the Lyon native says. “It has the look, the feel, the charm of a Lyonnaise bistro.”

On Wall Street itself, Michelin star chef John Fraser, who trained in Paris, is on a mission to modernize French brasserie cooking at La Marchande, opened in June in the new Wall Street Hotel. The historic building was the site of the first stock exchange. The hotel is owned by the Paspaley family, Australia’s South Sea pearling family.

Boulud is author of the menu in cooperation with chef Guillaume Ginther and corporate chef Jean-Francois Bruel: salade Lyonnaise, steak frites, sole meuniere, pike dumplings in a gruyere mushroom sauce. Wines are mostly French from the area around Lyon.

Chef/entrepreneur Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s The Fulton continues to celebrate seafood at the end of the Seaport District’s Pier 17 with jaw dropping views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River. And if you don’t like fish, there’s a Gruyere cheeseburger.

The Fulton was joined on Pier 17 in August by the highly anticipated Tin Building by Jean-Georges, a 53,000 square foot culinary extravaganza. Eight years in the making, it reimagines the historic Fulton Fish Market now operating at Hunts Point in the Bronx. “We have often done gratins but never as a highlight,” Boulud says. Gratins were a staple when he was growing up in Lyon. At Le Gratin, his mom’s potato gratin is a featured best-selling side dish. “‘Le gratin’ is also a funny way in France to refer to the ‘who’s who’ of a party and the life of the ‘see and be seen,’” Boulud explains.

There is a French brasserie in the complex but Vongerichten also embraces Chinese inspired dishes at the clandestine House of the Red Pearl, hidden away behind an Asian retail section. Overall, he views it as a “market that looks like New York.”

The chefs are betting on the return of office workers and rebounding tourism, which is predicted to exceed pre-pandemic levels by 2023. “One of the perks of going back to work is you can add a two-hour lunch,” says Boulud who envisions Le Gratin as a power lunch spot like the now shuttered Augustine which was favored by Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Wall Street deal makers. “We are next to City Hall where people get married, next to Wall Street, next to the World Trade Center,” says Boulud ticking off the virtues of his new location. “Even if the percentage of returning workers sounds low, the people who do go back entertain.”

One thing for sure: neither tourists nor FiDi office workers or residents are going to go hungry.

Not all the notable new restaurants are French inflected. Award winning chef Surbhi Sahni offers homestyle dishes and handmade mithai (sweets) from across India at Tagmo on Front Street in the Seaport District. Tagmo is the Bhutanese word for tigress, the symbol of feminine strength and empowerment in South Asian cuisine, a fitting symbol for her restaurant. She was previously a creative force behind Devi, Tulsi and Hemant Mathur Catering. Tagmo, her first brick and mortar enterprise, is an intimate jewel box decorated with the vibrant colors of India.

Clark even had the chance to recreate a Victoria’s Secret store as an art installation. A 1980’s mall in South Street Seaport was set to be demolished after flooding from Hurricane Sandy and artists were invited to transform the different stores into their own visions. “I was given the store which was 10,000 square feet with pink carpet,” she says, “I painted the whole thing: the ceiling, the floors, the check-out counter and built different installations. It was so funny to walk into this mall and then having this totally different experience.”

For Clark her art also expresses her life philosophy. “I love what creativity does for the brain. It opens up physically and metaphorically another part of our brain. As adults we tend to ignore that. When we are open ended and abstract, we see through our intuition and feelings as well as our eyes. Abstraction is a gateway to living intuitively and emotionally. My expression is part of learning to live very openly and empathetically and when people see my work, I hope they can see and feel some of that.”

Clark thinks not only out of the box but out of the gallery. After living in Colorado with “about one week of greenery,” she found great solace in the lushness of the East End including the water. “I like to take artwork out to the Sound and find different ways to float things and photograph them.” Having support as an artist is also a key to success and aside from finding her audience on social media she also takes a “boots on the ground” approach to connect in person with other artists and shows. Gallerist Jonathan Weiskopf of VSOP Projects in Greenport discovered her work and became a great resource. Clark comments, “He has a wide breadth of work he shows. He is an art enthusiast and art professional and an artist. He sees it through all those different lenses.” For her show at his gallery at 311 Front Street which runs October 1 to November 13, she will display different forms of work from paintings to water mobiles to painted fabric as well as pop-up installations around Greenport.

Clark embarked on her artistic journey by thinking outside the box, literally. An avid snow boarder from Colorado, she started college with an industrial design major but when she botched her box making assignment twice she decided, “I don’t think that precision work is where I was meant to be.” This change in focus led her to a major in painting at the University of Colorado, Boulder and opened up a whole new world. “Painting immediately felt like home,” Clark explains, “I love the freedom and expression, color and lack of boundaries.” She continued with a graduate degree at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and spread her wings and canvases from painting murals on her walls to reinventing paintings as household objects.

To achieve goals as an artist Clark acknowledges a deep sense of intentionality. She abides by the adage, “creativity shouldn’t be left for the stolen moments.” She says, “I make art in my life a priority, not something I get to after everything else is done. We have all these things to do, tasks to perform and we forget to nurture our creative side. I hope my work can help people to do that.”

Painting has been a road to many different projects for Clark. With her friends Nana Spears and Noah Spencer she formed New York-based Fort Makers in 2008, “a playful, multidisciplinary and immersive art brand,” which features hand-made objects across different disciplines, everything from furniture to table top to jewelry to lighting to textiles. “We had a mutual love for looking at objects as art and through many different lenses from what we wear to what we live with,” Clark comments. The artistic collaboration includes design partnerships, stage and interiors.

But woody plants – trees and shrubs –have a presence in the landscape all year round. We think of trees as towering presences in the landscape, providing shade, homes for birds, perhaps spring flowers or autumn color (or yearround color in the case of evergreens). Not all trees grow tall, though. Some stay more compact and can mix with other plants, anchoring beds and borders in the landscape or near the house, adding height and character through the year as other plants come and go. Some trees can grow happily in pots for years.

Small trees are easier to care for than flowers – they don’t need watering or fertilizing as frequently, or constant grooming to remove spent blossoms. One important caveat to keep

For a formal home, a pair of trees in matching urns on either side of the front door offer a gracious welcome to visitors. Neatly clipped evergreens, or matching trees trained as standards, with a round ball of foliage atop a tall, straight stem provide an elegant accent. For a more romantic look in a bed or border, a small weeping tree adds graceful form, with its branches growing out from the central trunk and then spilling downward toward the ground.

For late summer color, look for dwarf varieties of crape myrtle, whose bright pink, red or white flowers bloom around the Hamptons on full-size forms. Japanese maples light up the autumn garden with dazzling foliage; some varieties to consider include Crimson Queen, Viridis, Butterfly and PalmDissectum.trees

If you bring yours indoors over winter and give it a spot in an east window, and some water when it’s dry, you can bring it back outdoors when the weather warms in spring. Ficus trees such as weeping fig and fiddle leaf fig can be treated the same way. Meyer lemon can also live outdoors in summer and indoors in winter, and may reward you with fruit. Other possibilities include Lollipop or Cinderella crabapple and dwarf red sand cherry.

Anyone who has written a book report for a traditional English class in High School or Junior High is more than familiar with the titles Travels with Charley, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row and more works by Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winning author John Steinbeck. Although John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. was born in Salinas, California on February 27th, 1902, Sag Harbor, New York, was the home of his heart and talent most of his life. Whenever possible Sag Harbor Village honors his lifelong relationship and presence there.

Steinbeck could have lived comfortably almost anywhere in the United States, but, in 1955, he chose 2 Bluff Point Lane in Sag Harbor, which he called “Eden”, as his base of creative operations, and for the home of his unique lifestyle with his wife from 1950 to 1968, Elaine Anderson Steinbeck.

STEINBECK’S EDEN

The waterfront cottage Main House, with its 3 bedrooms and three baths was built in 1929. A special custom feature of the house is “The Library Loft”, which became a kind of playroom for his sons, John Steinbeck IV and Thomas Myles Steinbeck. When the boys became too rowdy and outgrew the loft, fate presented John Steinbeck with a perfect opportunity for a solution…the Cozy Cabin.

Most of Steinbeck’s creative work at “The Point” was done in the octagonal “Writing House”, with its windows on all sides, each with water views. According to Clark Covert, nephew of Elaine Steinbeck (whom he called “Aunt E”), Uncle John had a very particular way he liked his workspace. As a lover of Arthurian lore and history of coats of arms, he called The Writing House “Joyous Garde”, after Sir Lancelot’s castle in France. The bookshelves above his writing desk contained an interesting variety of volumes, including “Fishes of Europe”, an encyclopedia of flags, medical reference books and a set of Encyclopedia Britannica. On his desk was a red leather pencil box (for his preferred #2 pencils). Used ones ready for sharpening were placed in a special round plastic canister. Two sharpeners were available: a manual one and an electric one, which he preferred because of his love for gadgets. His workday started at 9 a.m. with his handwritten correspondence as a warmup for his creative typed work, which he typed on the typewriter stand he made himself out of an old Adirondack-style table.

There are many more interesting historic details about “The Point”, including “Doggy Island”, Charley’s preferred place to “go”, Gladys the plastic goose which Elaine lit up to let John know that drinks were ready in the house, and the swimming pool which they called “The Cement Pond”.
