oodbye summer and hello fall! Things might have slowed down a bit, but there's still plenty going on out here in the land of sun

ELITE ENEMIES The East End is yet again at the forefront of a new television series. Based on the book by The New York Times best-selling author Carl Weber and viewable on BET, Carl Weber’s The Black Hamptons is showing the rest of the world how it’s done here on the island.

Set in Sag Harbor, the four-part series tells the tale of old money versus new, as it relates to the black elite.

The storyline mainly focuses on the Brittons, whose money has seasoned via their banking business, and the Johnsons, a feisty nouveau riche family, the show features their brewing feud over a coveted piece of property.

According to BET, The Black Hamptons “not only features the glitz and gloss of the Black elite but also exposes the underbelly of wealth and prestige … with a mix of legacy families thriving for generations, friends, wannabes, and thirsty developers.”

Starring Lamman Rucker, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Elise Neal, Brian White, Karon Riley, Mike Merrill, Blac Chyna, and more, the epic promises sprawling mansions, enormous yachts, and sparkling beaches and plenty of drama. Can’t wait to watch what might very well be my new favorite show!

Knives Out 2

WAIT AND SEA This summer’s surprise visitor, Kate Hudson, has a brand-new role in the upcoming Knives Out sequel. Oh goody! Hudson will join returning cast Daniel Craig, as Detective Benoit, plus Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Katherine Hahn, Jessica Henwick and Ethan Hawke in Knives Out 2. Not much information is available at this time, but we do know that the suspense will be set in and around Greece and will deal with a murder mystery at sea. The film is set to screen on Netflix in December.

ABOUT TIME Zoe Kazan, a familiar face out East, will star with Carey Mulligan in the feature film She Said, which will hit theaters in November. The movie is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation and The New York Times best-selling book, She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement.

Picking up the #MeToo movement from the beginning, the film features Kazan and Mulligan as

real-life reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who broke one of the most significant social justice stories of a generation. Directed by Maria Schrader and written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the drama sets the story for how the investigation ended up shattering decades of silence about sexual assault and America’s cultural norms around sexism. Can’t wait to check it out!

MATCH POINT Hamptons habitué Serena Williams might have closed the door on one part of her mega-successful career but it looks like she’s opening a window into another.

In August, she spoke at the invite-only 1640 Society Family Office Wealth Forum, colloquially referred to as “the Davos of the Hamptons,” to talk about her VC Fund, Serena Ventures.

The tennis legend and 23-time Grand Slam Singles winner announced during this year’s U.S. Open that she would be retiring from the courts. She will now be focusing her considerable energies into investing in her portfolio, which boasts approximately 50 companies including Noom and MasterClass, while looking for opportunities to help fund businesses with diverse points of view.

REELING IN THE YEARS Cheers to Iris Apfel, who celebrated her 101st birthday at the Hamptons Synagogue Children’s Center, Jack’s House, in Westhampton Beach about a month ago.

The feisty fashionista, who calls herself “the world’s oldest teenager,” is best known for her dramatic flair, statement jewelry and over-the-top eyeglasses.

Her birthday party also served as a fundraising opportunity for fans to purchase pieces of Apfel’s legendary collection, with proceeds benefiting the Hamptons Synagogue.

ello and welcome to autumn, everyone! Pull up a chair with a donut and a hot cup of apple cider (preferably from the Milk Pail) and let’s chat about some late summer transactions.

BIG OFF-MARKET DEALS As usual, there are several exceptional sales, which are likely to make this year’s top ten lists. Sadly, for us looky-loos, many of them seem to happen off-market these days. Now how much fun is that, folks? Sheesh. First up is a $48 million deal on, of course, Meadow Lane (aka “Billionaires Row”). The property at 1116 Meadow Lane, which used to belong to electronic dance music mogul Robert X. Sillerman, which spans 3.6 acres with 200 linear feet of ocean frontage, was sold in 2014 for

$37.5 million. The land was sold again in 2020, for $36 million, to an anonymous buyer who former listing agent Tim Davis of Corcoran said planned to develop the land. And that someone did just that. Judging from other designs on IKB’s website, the house is no doubt a stunner, and Ed Hollander is of course well known for his outstanding landscape designs. And with all those acres, there’s plenty of room for a large oceanside pool and a sunken tennis court, which are sure to be added.

Another very recent off-market sale was that of 194 Meadowlark Lane in Bridgehampton for $37.5 million. The sellers were the Pamela Murphy Trust and Estate of Judith Shafran, while the buyer was a usual anonymous LLC. The sale included 4.1 luscious acres right on Sagg Pond, with beautiful ocean views, with

Parsons is a name that echoes down the centuries since the founding of the Long Island town of East Hampton. By 1880, when this farmhouse was built for Julius Parsons, seven generations of Parsons had already lived in East Hampton.

Besides horses, cows, pigs and chickens, the farm also had a blacksmith shop and an icehouse.

Julius also kept the Springs General Store, which is just around the corner. The store, which opened in 1847, is where Jackson Pollack, who lived nearby, once traded a painting for groceries. Still considered the heart of the hamlet, it was sold just this summer.

Springs Fireplace Road got its name because of the freshwater spring that feeds what’s known locally as Pussy’s Pond, after a woman who was known as Pussy Parsons, and because in an era without telephones, a fire would be built on the beach at the end of the road to signal boats to come or go from Gardiner’s Island.

Of course, any new owner will want to make some (and probably significant) upgrades and modernizations. However, the property is located in a historic district so exterior renovations and additions are subject to review by the town. Many locals, who include lots of Parsons and their descendants, hope the next owners will celebrate the history of the property as they create their own new legacy compound for future generations.

HAUTE SPOT DAN WELDEN: PRINTS CHARMING

BY DAWN WATSON Welden is showing no signs of slowing down.

He recently participated in a live exhibition, “The Pianist, The Poet & The Painter” at LTV in Wainscott, and his work is currently on view at the Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue and the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery in Brookhaven. He’s got more upcoming shows at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania; in Hudson, New York; and Annapolis, Maryland.

And there’s still more to come for the inventive and convivial artist. He is the focus of the soonto-be-released film, “Lasting Impressions: The Dan Welden Documentary.” Directed by his son, Carl Welden, the documentary features insight and praise from his contemporaries, including Kiki Smith, Eric Fischl, Alice Aycock, Helen Harrison, and Roy Nicholson, among others.

I

n the past 50 years, Dan Welden has made thousands of pieces of art. His work has been shown in 96 solo exhibitions and more than 700 group shows.

A master printmaker, author and Past President of the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Sag Harbor-based creator has travelled to 53 countries in support of his work and has taught thousands of others over the course of his prodigious career. Notably, he’s collaborated with and produced prints for the likes of Willem de Kooning, Elaine de Kooning, Eric Fischl, Kiki Smith, Robert Dash, Roy Nicholson, Dan Flavin, Jimmy Ernst, Esteban Vicente, William King, Kurt Vonnegut, Jane Freilicher, David Salle, Louisa Chase, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Larry Rivers, Jack Youngerman, and many others.

The prolific artist is a pioneer of alternative printmaking and the originator of Solarplate Etching — a revolutionary printmaking technique that doesn’t use acids and other dangerous chemicals and which allows artists to create a range of imagery and prints that resemble etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, screen prints or photographs. Welden is also a fierce advocate for environmental and spiritual awareness, and

serves on the board of Inspiration Plus, a nonprofit Arts and Science educational organization.

Despite his numerous successes, at the end of the day, Welden wants for little.

However humble, Welden is a true innovator whose work has instructed and touched the lives of too many to count, according to his fellow artists and art-world experts.

“I don’t really have expectations about trying to reach any great level or making a fortune. But I am looking for that 100th show,” he mused during a recent studio visit. “I just hope to achieve the same sensibility as I have up to this moment.

eturning for its 30th year, the Hamptons International Film Festival (familiarly known as “HIFF”) kicks off on Friday, October 7 and runs through Sunday, October 16. For the first time ever, the festival will run for 10 days over the course of two weekends, which allows for additional screenings as well as more programs and conversations with filmmakers. Passes and packages are on sale at hamptonsfilmfest.org.

HIFF has a long and illustrious list of supporters in 2022, including returning Premiere Sponsor Audi; Signature Sponsors Netflix, Silvercup Studios, and Variety; and Contributing Sponsor Regal Cinemas. This year, the new Lead Sponsor is The Macallan; Contributing Sponsors include Crystal Head Vodka and Dragon Hemp. New York State

Council on the Arts and Suffolk County Film Commission return as Media Sponsors; local Media Sponsors also include The East Hampton Star, WNET, Long Island Broadcast Radio WEHM, 101.7 The Beach, and 102.5 BAZ. Well-regarded as the premier film event on the East End, HIFF is an intimate showcase of some of the year’s best offerings in contemporary cinema. An Academy Award-qualifying festival, HIFF hosts multiple competitions focused specifically on early-career filmmakers in order to bolter and promote their works.

The HIFF mandate includes bolstering these works by developing discussions around the films from within the film community and beyond. Festival selections continue to play an important role during awards season, with a significant number of titles highlighted

every year at the Academy Awards. For the past 12 years, the films selected to receive the Best Picture Oscars at the Academy Awards were showcased at HIFF. According to its organizers, HIFF is the only film festival in the world to garner such a distinction. Films in the 2021 Festival received 38 Academy Award nominations and overall, films in the last 14 annual Festivals have received a total of 489 Oscar nominations. In a recent article about HIFF, entertainment magazine Variety noted that the festival has grown a reputation for “... promoting Oscar race front-runners, but has also become the place to see emerging talent before they become marquee names.”

Film critics are also in attendance at the festival each year, including from The New York Film Critics Circle. The festival also attracts a wide

In 2017, former Festival chair Alec Baldwin instituted the Dick Cavett Artistic Champion Award honoring those who excel in the field of creative arts as well as those who support the arts. This year, the Dick Cavett Artistic Champion Award will be bestowed upon Emmy Award-winning actress Mariska Hargitay, who has spent decades in the role of Captain Olivia Benson in NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Ms. Hargitay advocates on behalf of survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse through her not-for-profit organization, the Joyful Heart Foundation. She has received numerous awards for this advocacy work, including the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault Special Ally Award, the Good Sister Award for Advocacy at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Manhattan’s “100 Women Against Child Abuse,” and a Muse Award from New York Women in Film and Television.

Hargitay has been busy behind the camera as well. She served as executive producer of I AM EVIDENCE, a documentary about the rape kit backlog in this country, which received an Emmy in 2017. The film also received the Victor Rabinowitz & Joanne Grant Award for Social Justice at HIFF25. The rape kit backlog is an important topic for Hargitay: earlier this year, her organization Joyful Heart jumpstarted endthebacklog.org, the first-of-its-kind web resource to track state by state rape kit numbers and backlog reform status.

BY HANNAH SELINGER who has worked at places like Indian Wells Tavern, 1770 House, and Coche Comedor, and chef Fabian Rodas, Rossi has created a place for locals to enjoy a laid-back vibe. Starters, salads, mains, and grilled selections round off a casual menu in the South Fork’s most casual neighborhood.

Not far away, in Amagansett, another trending restaurant this year also shares the name of its predecessor. Astro’s Pizza, on Main Street, is now owned by PJ Calapa, owner of Scampi and The Spainard, in New York City. Investor Ben Leventhal, one of the founders of Resy, joins Calapa in the mission to reinvent Astro’s, which still serves up compelling pizzas, as well as a host of other casual Italian-American dishes that speak to the vibe of this beachy place.

f you’re looking to harness the South Fork’s restaurant’s dining scene, look no further than these scene-stealing restaurants. These restaurants are new, white-hot, and commanding the attention of East End diners. Now trending: an incredible meal.

In Springs, the Springs Tavern, a casual place to meet up and grab a meal (it closed last summer) has been resurrected. Alex Rossi, a Springs resident who grew up in the restaurant business in New York City — his father, Rubrio Rossi, owned Parioli Romanissimo on the Upper East Side — has created a year-round restaurant, featuring affordable prices and a revamped interior. Partnering with Raul Rodas, a veteran

You may know it from its part in the television series “The Affair.” But this year, the trending restaurant is the newest branch of the Lobster Roll (AKA Lunch), which has taken over the former Princess Diner in Southampton. The classic hand-picked lobster roll, made from cold-water lobster, is as fresh as ever at this diner. (You can also order your lobster roll hot,

also known as Connecticut-style, served with drawn butter and a side of creamy coleslaw.)

In Bridgehampton, where World Pie once stood another trending pizzeria now reigns. Maurizio Marfoglia of Dopo La Spiaggia in Sag Harbor and East Hampton has opened Dopo il Ponte, a wood-burning oven pizzeria dedicated to thin-crust-style pizza. There are pastas here, too, as well as other types of entrees (eggplant Parmesan with San Marzano tomatoes; filet mignon with a green peppercorn and mustard sauce; linguine alla vongole with Manila clams and pancetta). But you’d be smart to order any of the crisp pies, like the San Daniele, topped with 36-month-aged San Daniele prosciutto.

All the way out in Montauk, Stephanie Williams and Demi Gonzalez have opened an all-day café known as Rooted Montauk, with casual meals by day and composed plates by golden hour.

NYC EATS “We have often done gratins but never as a highlight,” Boulud says. Gratins were a staple when he was growing up in Lyon. At Le Gratin, his mom’s potato gratin is a featured best-selling side dish. “‘Le gratin’ is also a funny way in France to refer to the ‘who’s who’ of a party and the life of the ‘see and be seen,’” Boulud explains.

Boulud is author of the menu in cooperation with chef Guillaume Ginther and corporate chef Jean-Francois Bruel: salade Lyonnaise, steak frites, sole meuniere, pike dumplings in a gruyere mushroom sauce. Wines are mostly French from the area around Lyon.

A

bevy of Michelin star chefs is turning lower Manhattan into a restaurant hot spot. Uber chef Daniel Boulud, whose culinary empire stretches as far afield as Singapore and Dubai, fired the opening salvo with Le Gratin in the space formerly occupied

by Augustine in The Beekman, a Thompson Hotel, an 11-minute walk from City Hall. “I had celebrated my birthday at Augustine and was familiar with the space,” the Lyon native says. “It has the look, the feel, the charm of a Lyonnaise bistro.”

On Wall Street itself, Michelin star chef John Fraser, who trained in Paris, is on a mission to modernize French brasserie cooking at La Marchande, opened in June in the new Wall Street Hotel. The historic building was the site of the first stock exchange. The hotel is owned by the Paspaley family, Australia’s South Sea pearling family.

Fraser says he always wanted to open a French brasserie but with a “fun, New York sensibility.”

Executive chef Rick Horiike (Morimoto and Wild Ink) leans towards vinaigrettes and broths and away from heavier sauces. The grilled lobster here is a lighter take on lobster Americaine made with coconut milk instead of butter and cream.

L’Appart — Agnolotti

La Marchande also showcases a classic New York raw bar serving a variety of oysters, saluting the restaurant’s proximity to Pearl Street and the Paspaley family, as well as creative tartare and rolls such as an outstanding blue crab lettuce wrap. Beverage director Amy Racine’s wine list is largely French but also nods to Australia. A list of French Vermouths, rarely available in New York, is an added attraction.

Chef/entrepreneur Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s The Fulton continues to celebrate seafood at the end of the Seaport District’s Pier 17 with jaw dropping views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River. And if you don’t like fish, there’s a Gruyere cheeseburger.

The Fulton was joined on Pier 17 in August by the highly anticipated Tin Building by Jean-Georges, a 53,000 square foot culinary extravaganza.

Eight years in the making, it reimagines the historic Fulton Fish Market now operating at Hunts Point in the Bronx. Designed by Roman + Williams, the glorified food hall includes 18 restaurants, bars, and casual grab and go options as well as specialty foods and home goods retail.

The Tin Building is one of two surviving structures of the fish market which was dissembled and recreated 32 feet east of its original location at Pier 17. Vongerichten waxes nostalgic remembering shopping at the fish market when he was first a chef in New York in 1986. It’s no accident a fish counter is front and center at the entrance. There is a French brasserie in the complex but Vongerichten also embraces Chinese inspired dishes at the clandestine House of the Red Pearl, hidden away behind an Asian retail section. Overall, he views it as a “market that looks like New York.”

And pssst!, a recreated Spice Market is in the cards in a building a few feet away.

At the Art Deco 70 Pine Street, the cuisine at Crown Shy has European roots too but is interpreted in a very American way and has gotten rave reviews since its opening in 2018.

It offers a $245 tasting menu with breathtaking views on the 62nd through 66th floors topped off by the elegant Overstory cocktail bar. Nearby on the 60th floor of 28 Liberty Street, restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Manhatta has reopened with an emphasis on cocktails. Meanwhile, diners can pretend they are guests in a French chef’s apartment at L’Appart in Le District where chef Nicolas Abello holds forth.

Not all the notable new restaurants are French inflected. Award winning chef Surbhi Sahni offers homestyle dishes and handmade mithai (sweets) from across India at Tagmo on Front Street in the Seaport District. Tagmo is the Bhutanese word for tigress, the symbol of feminine strength and empowerment in South Asian cuisine, a fitting symbol for her restaurant.

She was previously a creative force behind Devi, Tulsi and Hemant Mathur Catering. Tagmo, her first brick and mortar enterprise, is an intimate jewel box decorated with the vibrant colors of India.

The chefs are betting on the return of office workers and rebounding tourism, which is predicted to exceed pre-pandemic levels by 2023. “One of the perks of going back to work is you can add a two-hour lunch,” says Boulud who envisions Le Gratin as a power lunch spot like the now shuttered Augustine which was favored by Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Wall Street deal makers. “We are next to City Hall where people get married, next to Wall Street, next to the World Trade Center,” says Boulud ticking off the virtues of his new location. “Even if the percentage of returning workers sounds low, the people who do go back entertain.”

One thing for sure: neither tourists nor FiDi office workers or residents are going to go hungry.

For Clark her art also expresses her life philosophy.

“I love what creativity does for the brain. It opens up physically and metaphorically another part of our brain. As adults we tend to ignore that. When we are open ended and abstract, we see through our intuition and feelings as well as our eyes. Abstraction is a gateway to living intuitively and emotionally. My expression is part of learning to live very openly and empathetically and when people see my work, I hope they can see and feel some of that.”

N

aomi Clark embarked on her artistic journey by thinking outside the box, literally. An avid snow boarder from Colorado, she started college with an industrial design major but when she botched her box making assignment twice she decided, “I don’t think that precision work is where I was meant to be.” This change in focus led her to a major in painting at the University of Colorado, Boulder and opened up a whole new world. “Painting immediately felt like home,” Clark explains, “I love the freedom and expression, color and lack of boundaries.” She continued with a graduate degree at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and spread her wings and canvases from painting murals on her walls to reinventing paintings as household objects.

Painting has been a road to many different projects for Clark. With her friends Nana Spears and Noah Spencer she formed New York-based Fort Makers in 2008, “a playful, multidisciplinary and immersive art brand,” which features hand-made objects across different disciplines, everything from furniture to table top to jewelry to lighting to textiles. “We had a mutual love for looking at objects as art and through many different lenses from what we wear to what we live with,” Clark comments. The artistic collaboration includes design partnerships, stage and interiors.

Clark thinks not only out of the box but out of the gallery. After living in Colorado with “about one week of greenery,” she found great solace in the lushness of the East End including the water. “I like to take artwork out to the Sound and find different ways to float things and photograph them.” Having support as an artist is also a key to success and aside from finding her audience on social media she also takes a “boots on the ground” approach to connect in person with other artists and shows. Gallerist Jonathan Weiskopf of VSOP Projects in Greenport discovered her work and became a great resource.

Clark comments, “He has a wide breadth of work he shows. He is an art enthusiast and art professional and an artist. He sees it through all those different lenses.” For her show at his gallery at 311 Front Street which runs October 1 to November 13, she will display different forms of work from paintings to water mobiles to painted fabric as well as pop-up installations around Greenport.

To achieve goals as an artist Clark acknowledges a deep sense of intentionality. She abides by the adage, “creativity shouldn’t be left for the stolen moments.” She says, “I make art in my life a priority, not something I get to after everything else is done.

We have all these things to do, tasks to perform and we forget to nurture our creative side. I hope my work can help people to do that.”

Clark even had the chance to recreate a Victoria’s Secret store as an art installation. A 1980’s mall in South Street Seaport was set to be demolished after flooding from Hurricane Sandy and artists were invited to transform the different stores into their own visions. “I was given the store which was 10,000 square feet with pink carpet,” she says, “I painted the whole thing: the ceiling, the floors, the check-out counter and built different installations. It was so funny to walk into this mall and then having this totally different experience.”

lowers bless the world with their colors for just a short time – most perennials bloom for only a few weeks and annuals are gone in fall. But woody plants – trees and shrubs – have a presence in the landscape all year round.

We think of trees as towering presences in the landscape, providing shade, homes for birds, perhaps spring flowers or autumn color (or yearround color in the case of evergreens). Not all trees grow tall, though. Some stay more compact and can mix with other plants, anchoring beds and borders in the landscape or near the house, adding height and character through the year as other plants come and go. Some trees can grow happily in pots for years.

Small trees can grow closer to the house than majestic oaks and maples. They can add height to a bed or border of flowers or shrubs, even in a foundation planting in front of the house, if chosen carefully. They can bring year-round structure to a small landscape, or a mixed bed in the front lawn where flowers and groundcovers also grow in summer. They can also add rich color – Japanese maples are known for their

brilliant autumn foliage in blazing reds, oranges and yellows, and the dwarf varieties are just as bright as their taller relatives. Small trees are especially welcome near a patio, where they supply shade and greenery, and perhaps flowers, too, and colorful autumn foliage or interesting bark in winter. A bed next to a patio or deck can include a small tree or two for vertical interest.

You might even construct a patio around one of your favorite trees and incorporate it right into the design. For a formal home, a pair of trees in matching urns on either side of the front door offer a gracious welcome to visitors. Neatly clipped evergreens, or matching trees trained as standards, with a round ball of foliage atop a tall, straight stem provide an elegant accent.

For a more romantic look in a bed or border, a small weeping tree adds graceful form, with its branches growing out from the central trunk and then spilling downward toward the ground.

Small trees are easier to care for than flowers – they don’t need watering or fertilizing as frequently, or constant grooming to remove spent blossoms. One important caveat to keep

in mind when choosing a small tree for a bed, border, a foundation planting or a location near the deck or patio, is the size the tree will grow to be when it is fully mature. That lovely little cherry tree covered with spring flowers at the local nursery could end up being much too tall and too wide for that spot outside the front door. It could in time overwhelm a foundation planting, blocking windows, scraping against the wall, shading out other plants. If you need a small tree, make sure the one you are choosing is actually a dwarf variety. If you’re shopping at a local nursery, ask knowledgeable staff for guidance. Check the plant’s ID tag. If online, read the information carefully to find the mature height and width of the plant. Plant names can sometimes provide a clue as well. If you see words such as Nana, Compacta or Minima in the name, the tree is probably a smaller form of the species.

It is essential to be realistic about the amount of space you have available and choose a tree that won’t outgrow it. Moving an overgrown tree is a big project.

Here are some trees that are compact in size, or grow very slowly and remain small for years, making them good choices to combine with perennials, groundcovers or other plants, or to grow in a large container. If you’re looking for evergreens that provide color year-round, a few options are dwarf Alberta spruce, elegant in a formal urn, Hetz Midget arborvitae (just remember to put it where deer can’t get to it), Arnold Arboretum dwarf Japanese pine, and Globosa or Montgomery blue spruce. For late summer color, look for dwarf varieties of crape myrtle, whose bright pink, red or white flowers bloom around the Hamptons on full-size forms.

Japanese maples light up the autumn garden with dazzling foliage; some varieties to consider include Crimson Queen, Viridis, Butterfly and Dissectum.

Palm trees are sold by local nurseries to add a touch of the tropics to decks and patios. If you bring yours indoors over winter and give it a spot in an east window, and some water when it’s dry, you can bring it back outdoors when the weather warms in spring. Ficus trees such as weeping fig and fiddle leaf fig can be treated the same way.

Meyer lemon can also live outdoors in summer and indoors in winter, and may reward you with fruit. Other possibilities include Lollipop or Cinderella crabapple and dwarf red sand cherry.

Weekend, Canio’s Books, the premier bookstore of Sag Harbor, celebrated the 60th birthday of Travels with Charley with dramatic readings of portions on their lawn, as part of their “Canio’s Cultural Café” Series.

Steinbeck scholar Susan Shillinglaw recently lectured about “Travels with Charley at 60” at The Church on Madison Street. Sag Harbor Cinema just held a special screening of the film The Grapes of Wrath.

In the old days, as you traveled East on Montauk Highway through Wainscott, you passed a lighted sign marking the location of “Cozy Cabins”, a cluster of tiny, basic one-room cottages. On the night designated as moving out night for the Cabins, in preparation of their subsequent replacement, Steinbeck passed the flatbed trucks that were in the process of hauling them away. Thinking fast he ran up to one of the drivers, gave his address and a wad of cash (he never told Elaine

Steinbeck could have lived comfortably almost anywhere in the United States, but, in 1955, he chose 2 Bluff Point Lane in Sag Harbor, which he called “Eden”, as his base of creative operations, and for the home of his unique lifestyle with his wife from 1950 to 1968, Elaine Anderson Steinbeck.

Often called “The Point”, the romantic, private and peaceful location was the perfect choice for the Steinbecks. With 586 feet of waterfront, and a 60-foot dock jutting into Morris Cove on one side of the property and

how much) for them to deliver what would be his very own Cozy Cabin. They couldn’t quite make it onto the property, so they dropped it as close as possible. The Sag Harbor Fire Department dragged the cabin to its final location, after having to cut down a split rail fence to enter the property.

There are many more interesting historic details about “The Point”, including “Doggy Island”, Charley’s preferred place to “go”, Gladys the plastic goose which Elaine lit up to let John know that drinks were ready in the house, and the swimming pool which they called “The Cement Pond”.

Most of Steinbeck’s creative work at “The Point” was done in the octagonal “Writing House”, with its windows on all sides, each with water views. According to Clark Covert, nephew of Elaine Steinbeck (whom he called “Aunt E”), Uncle John had a very particular way he liked his workspace. As a lover of Arthurian lore and history of coats of arms, he called The Writing House “Joyous Garde”, after Sir Lancelot’s castle in France. The bookshelves above his writing desk contained an interesting variety of volumes, including “Fishes of Europe”, an encyclopedia of flags, medical reference books and a set of Encyclopedia Britannica. On his desk was a red leather pencil box (for his preferred #2 pencils). Used ones ready for sharpening were placed in a special round plastic canister.

Two sharpeners were available: a manual one and an electric one, which he preferred because of his love for gadgets. His workday started at 9 a.m. with his handwritten correspondence as a warmup for his creative typed work, which he typed on the typewriter stand he made himself out of an old Adirondack-style table.
