Arts in Texas Prepare for an inspiring weekend on the banks of the Guadalupe River. At the site of the Stonehenge II monument, festival tents will overflow with colorful fine art and crafts, accompanied by Texas musicians and sweet and savory scents from the food court.
More than 120 exhibitors have been selected from a highly competitive field of applicants. Fan-favorite artists will return to the fair after its successful revival in 2018. It’s typical for visitors to return too, hoping to discover a new treasure or a one-of-a-kind “must have.”
The Beginning of a Colorful Tradition
Art careers have started at the fair and longtime friendships between artists and collectors have been established as well. The fair’s 2019 “Heritage Artists” include Amado Peña, Fred Stockbauer, and Edith and John Maskey who exhibited in the early days of the fair. The first fair was held Memorial Day weekend 1972, in tandem with the Kerrville Folk Festival, and for 30 years was held on the Schreiner University campus. The idea for the arts and crafts fair originated in 1970, when the Texas Tourist Development Agency, inspired by successful arts fairs in West Virginia and Canada, wanted to establish a similar event in Texas. From a number of competing cities, Kerrville was selected as the host site and the Texas Legislature designated it as the official Texas Arts & Crafts Fair.

Relaunching the Fair at HCAF
Now in its 43rd year, the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair was relaunched in 2018 after a hiatus of five years. The fair’s new home at the Hill Country Arts Foundation conjures memories of its original leafy environment, with green fields and majestic trees sprawling across 13 acres, welcoming guests to enjoy the bounty of Texas art, food, and music. According to Event Director Wanda Cash, more than 140 volunteers helped with the 2018 event. “Community support like that shows folks missed the fair and were happy to see it return,” she says. In spite of a Saturday morning thunderstorm, the 2018 fair was deemed a success. “During the rain, people gathered under the tents, browsed the art, or ate funnel cakes,” Wanda states. “Even with the sudden downpour, the artists were pleased with their sales.” Financial support also is key to producing an event of this size and scope. The City of Ingram used money from hotel occupancy tax funds to pay for advertising, joining other major sponsors including James Avery Artisan Jewelry, the McLaughlin-Doty Foundation, Majestic Ranch Arts Foundation, and HEB. The Hill Country Arts Foundation is the ideal setting for the arts and crafts fair, with plenty of parking and lush fields to welcome visitors. The HCAF, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2019, has evolved from a cluster of modest teaching studios and an outdoor theater into a vibrant center for the visual and performing arts. Visitors will be able to stroll the grounds and experience what HCAF has to offer. Inside its magical circle, the Stonehenge Stage will host music all day, with plenty of seating near the stage and inside the new Alstadt Biergarten tent. The Art Exploration Zone and demonstration area will offer fairgoers an opportunity to watch artisans at work, including a blacksmith, woodworkers, spinners, potters, and jewelry makers. Children will be able to express their own creativity and make art they can take home. Sugary scents from funnel cakes, sweet crepes, and freshsqueezed lemonade will entice fairgoers to the food court where other choices include barbecue, pizza, hamburgers, healthy wraps, and German delicacies. The Limeliters and Kerrville’s Sentimental Journey Orchestra, under the direction of Ted Conerly, headline the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair “Legacy Concert” September 28 at the Point Theatre. The concert “celebrating community collaboration” is sponsored by the Kerrville Folk Festival, Hill Country Arts Foundation, and Schreiner University. In 1971, the Texas Tourist Development Agency announced plans for a new Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair in Kerrville. The Governor’s Office contacted Rod Kennedy and asked him to create a music event to complement the fair. In 1972, these two iconic Kerrville events kicked off together. Schreiner University joins the Folk Festival and the Hill Country Arts Foundation to present this spectacular musical event at the beautiful outdoor 500-seat Point Theatre. The concert is reserved seating with tickets priced at $25 and $35. A $60 VIP Package includes concert tickets and dinner before the show. Honored Heritage Guest Artist Welcome back to the Fair
Amado M. Peña, Jr. Austin-based artist Amado M. Peña, Jr. began exhibiting at the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair in 1972. His art, depicting Native American peoples and places, was just beginning to attract attention and his images became recognizable and sought-after. His distinctive faces, abstract backgrounds, and vivid colors captured the imagination of collectors who couldn’t wait for his return each year to the Fair to get the latest Peña painting. As Amado Peña’s art explored more of his own native roots as both a Mexicano and a member of the Pascua Yaqui Indian tribe of Arizona, his paintings and lithographs reached a wider national audience. Mr. Peña’s unique artistry reflects many Southwestern geographic sites such as Canyon de Chelly, Spider Rock, Monument Valley, and Enchanted Mesa. His works celebrate the Native American people who have learned how to creatively meet the harsh realities of life in an uncompromising land.

For the past five decades of his impressive career, Amado Peña’s art has received many honors and accolades throughout the United States. His art is widely collected and appears in important private and museum collections, here and abroad. Today Mr. Peña lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and continues to explore his artistic vision in new and exciting ways. A large portion of Amado Peña’s time is spent exhibiting across the country and appearing as a guest lecturer. Though Amado Peña is a widely recognized artist, he remains humble and connected to his roots as he joyfully shares his vision and passion for his art. “We are extremely proud to have Amado Peña return to us at this year’s Texas Arts & Crafts Fair,” says Wanda Cash, Fair Director. “Fair attendees and art collectors are in for a special treat, meeting Mr. Peña and enjoying his exuberant personality while experiencing his latest Native American artistry.” Amado Peña shares, “I feel very honored being invited and named Heritage Artist for this year’s fair. Sanctuary The “secrets of the Old Masters” are not completely lost—instructor Holly White-Gehrt firmly believes that anyone with the passion and tenacity required to develop the skills has the potential to paint and draw like the old masters. She teaches the Hill Country Atelier, which is beginning its third year this fall at the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram. Holly received her atelier training in Seattle from Juliette Aristides and Tenaya Sims, and subsequently taught for two years at Georgetown Atelier and Gage Academy before moving to Kerrville. Before that, she earned a BFA in Studio Art from Pacific Northwest College of Art and a BA in Anthropology at University of Texas Austin.

the Hill Country Atelier offers support to all local artists
The Hill Country Atelier encourages the unique vision of each artist. While emphasis is on learning skills to render convincingly representational art, the goal is to equip the artist with a full visual vocabulary to communicate his or her personal vision and concepts. Fundamentals are drawing, anatomy, perspective, value discernment, indirect painting methods, design, color theory, and composition. You’re invited to view “Output,” an exhibit of current Hill Country Atelier students. You’ll get a sense of what the first two years (of a three-year program) of dedicated study entails, and see the results for yourself. The exhibit will be on view from October 11 to November 8 at the Duncan-McAshan Gallery at the Hill Country Arts Foundation on Point Theatre Road in Ingram.

The Hill Country Atelier is currently accepting students for a new core group starting in the fall term. Each term is ten weeks, and class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students have their own studio space and are strongly encouraged to work hours beyond the minimum requirement. Enrollment is limited. The Hill Country Arts Foundation is a nonprofit organization celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The Visual Arts has only one fund-raiser each year, which is coming up on Sunday, September 22, 3:30-6:30 p.m. The “Mad Hatter” party is a catered event with silent auction items donated to help support the visual arts. In addition, five prizes, each valued from $300 to $800, will be raffled. You can help support the atelier and other visual arts programs by participating. The atelier is in imminent need of scholarship funds and purchase of a classical cast. W
e’re in the midst of fall migration, that magical time when our colorful summer residents head south for the winter. While this is an arduous trip for them, it is the hummingbird that has the hardest migratory journey. In July our black-chinned hummingbirds began their migration to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Hummingbirds in northern states have also started migration and will continue making their way to the Gulf of Mexico where they prepare for the most dramatic leg of their journey.
Once at the coastline, they feed heavily while waiting for perfect weather conditions, such as wind from the north to help them along. As evening sets in, the hummers take off one by one for a long, lonely flight over the Gulf of Mexico—a whopping 500mile journey across open water with no place to rest— eighteen to twenty-two hours of non-stop flight—where they land exhausted. Hummers need to put on weight and enough fat reserves to fuel this journey. Too much in reserves and they’ll be too sluggish to fly. Not enough and they won’t make it across the Gulf—doubling their normal body weight appears to the magic number. The rufous hummingbird has the longest journey—starting at their summer homes in Washington, Canada, and Alaska, they fly up to 3,000 miles back to Mexico. During the daytime they need to search for food, leaving only time for short rejuvenating naps along the way. Full sleep and torpor don’t occur during migration, making for one tiring trip. Texas is a big state without many feeders along the way, so keeping at least one feeder going through Halloween will help them make it to the Gulf. Until next spring…

The amazing and destructive spider mite by Trena Cullins
Tetranychus urticae, otherwise known in Texas as the two-spotted spider mite or red spider mite, is a pesky little critter. This devastating pest is so small it’s difficult to see with the naked eye. Infested foliage has a silver or yellow mottled appearance—you’re seeing the dense, fine webbing announcing their presence. Holding a white sheet of paper under the plant leaves and thumping it should dislodge them. Mites will appear to be small moving specks, 1/150” to 1/50”.
Most mites begin infestation on the underside of leaves, piercing the plant to feed off its chlorophyll. They also feed on fruit and roots. Spider mites lay eggs on the plant and even though the life cycle is short, many generations are produced quickly. They’re extremely active in hot, dry weather and often attack weakened or stressed plants. Serious damage to vegetable and ornamental crops can

happen in fewer than three days. They hibernate in weeds, debris, and bark. Mites also travel far by riding the wind on their fine webbing—think magic carpet. They’re even spread through clothing and pets. There are many chemical and organic controls available to kill this aggressive little pest. Occasionally the affected plant is so damaged it’s best to remove it to control spreading. Choosing the right car seat by Lainie-Johnson
W
hen your car is involved in an accident, it comes to an abrupt stop. Anyone inside the car continues to move at the rate of speed the car was traveling—probably 75 mph if you are on I-10. If your child is not in a car seat (children are too small for seat belts) he will continue moving at 75 mph until stopped by something––the windshield, a door, or the pavement. What car seat is best? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a rear-facing car seat that supports the head, neck, and spine and distributes the crash force over the entire body. Newborns’ heads are approximately 25 percent of their total body length, and their spines and necks are weak. In an accident, the baby’s head could be snapped back and forth and the result could be catastrophic. Only eleven states require children under the age of two to be in rear-facing car seats, and Texas is not one of them. If your child fits the seat’s height and weight restrictions, she can stay in a rear-facing seat beyond infancy, perhaps up to age four. A label on the car seat gives the height and weight limits. Always follow those limits, as each manufacturer knows what its seats are designed to do. Do not ever use a secondhand car seat, unless you are completely familiar with its history. It may have been in an accident, even though there’s no visible damage, and could be ineffective in protecting your child. Also note the car seat’s expiration date––it’s usually
printed on the bottom of the seat. Plastics that car seats are made of deteriorate over time. Check regularly for recalls. Register the car seat when you purchase it, so the manufacturer can notify you if it is recalled in the future. Install your car seat properly. Some experts say as many as 80 percent are not installed properly and this is the leading cause of death among children. Be sure the straps are tight––loose straps may not hold your child in the seat during an accident. Always be sure the seat you are considering is compatible with your car. ver since 1880, the Y.O. brand has conjured up scenes of cattle, cowboys, and campfires. Folks today imagine saddle pals straddling a log after a long day, spooning spicy pinto beans and sipping strong coffee. In 1980, along came the Annual Y.O. Dealing with physical pain by Lea Jimenez
A
ccording to the National Institute of Health, an estimated 25.3 million American adults have had pain every day for the preceding three months. They also report that nearly 40 million have experienced severe levels of pain. With numbers like these, it’s likely that either you have struggled with pain, or someone close to you has.
Chronic pain is described as pain lasting over twelve weeks and falls into the following categories: back pain, joint pain, nerve pain, and headaches. It can affect as many as eight out of ten American adults and is caused by a musculoskeletal injury, nervous system dysfunction, chronic diseases, or autoimmune disorders. Pain has been estimated to cost around $600 billion a year in medical treatments and lost productivity, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). An IOM committee commissioned by Congress concluded that pain is not optimally managed in the U.S. and that effective treatment of pain will require a coordinated national effort to transform how the public, policy makers, and healthcare providers view the condition.

What approach is the best when trying to manage pain? While some tend to lean toward a more traditional medical approach, others seek out alternative treatments. In truth, the answer can be much more fluid and subjective. Consulting with your doctor, as well as seeking out complementary approaches such as yoga, massage therapy, and meditation, and nutritional supplements may be a more effective approach for you. Other tips for coping with pain indicate to stay active with appropriate exercise (know your limits), make social connections, distract yourself during pain flareups, and don’t lose hope! Another insightful idea is to use a journal to indicate your pain levels on each day, understanding the necessity of adjusting your approach based on how you are feeling, and what you find that is working effectively. PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary by Judy Jones
Advancing the Auxiliary mission . . . Each year Peterson Health Hospital Auxiliary funds employee scholarships. Money raised from the Gift Shop and vendor sales help defray tuition costs for advanced healthcare education. Lynda DeMasco, Chair for the scholarship committee, says that applications are solicited and some fifteen to twenty scholarships awarded to full-time employees after stringent review and evaluation. Goal orientation, grades, and supervisor approval are taken into consideration as part of the process. Scholarships can also be used for certification in use of equipment, like radiology, which also benefits the hospital.

Here are stories from four of this year’s scholarship recipients: Denise Collyer, RN, a charge nurse in the Acute Rehab Department and a third-year scholarship recipient, is pursuing an MSN Degree (Masters of Science in Nursing) online from Texas A & M in Corpus Christi, after which she plans to teach nursing students. She feels she could not pursue this advanced degree without the scholarship money. Dustin English, RN, currently a clinical supervisor in the Emergency Department, is a first-year scholarship recipient. He hopes to complete an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) online from Texas A & M in Corpus Christi, after which he plans a career in healthcare administration. Having the scholarship has expanded Dustin’s options in the healthcare field. Janie Morales, RN, a recovery nurse in Surgical Services is a twotime scholarship recipient and in September will be pursuing a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) at Schreiner University. She has recently been promoted to Joint Coordinator Nurse in the Surgical Unit and feels that the scholarship has made it easier to achieve her educational goals.

Kim McNaughton, RN, is currently a clinical supervisor in Surgical Services and has been employed at Peterson Health off and on for 10 years. This is her second scholarship and she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing online with American Sentinel College out of Colorado. Kim feels that the Peterson Health scholarships are an incentive for staff improvement in healthcare education which benefits the individual and the hospital.
