“Whether you revel in AI’s e ciency, scalability and coste ectiveness, or rail against its lack of accuracy, security and emotional intelligence, it’s not going away.”
Thefuture often feels like a dangerous place. No matter how messy, how dark, or how bleak the time behind us might be, at least we know its details and can pick apart its reasons. The future, though, well, that’s often shrouded in darkness, and we’ve all been afraid of the dark.
When we were discussing this year’s comic and what we might want to base it on, the one thing that kept coming up was artificial intelligence. It’s been barely 18 months since the launch of ChatGPT but, since then, an existential crisis has befallen not just advertising, but humanity itself. Artificial intelligence existed before OpenAI launched its virtual assistant, but ChatGPT pushed the technology front and centre and made us realise the heights – or depths – to which AI could take us.
Whether you revel in AI’s e ciency, scalability and cost-e ectiveness, or rail against its lack of accuracy, security and emotional intelligence (or maybe you accept all of those things), it’s not going away. So, we tasked our regular comic contributors, Chris Baker and Joe Totti, with reimagining the Terminator franchise into a cautionary tale of creative greed.
AI will, of course, be a central talking point across this Cannes Lions week,
and you’re unlikely to be able to throw a carefully worded prompt without hitting a panel discussion or presentation on the topic. But the real beauty of Cannes is the ability to see the amazing work that has been brought to life by good, old fashioned human creativity. The week is a celebration of what ideas, ingenuity and hard work can achieve and, whatever the future might hold, it’s hard to imagine that ever being any di erent.
Talking of celebrations, this Thursday in Cannes will see the annual shots Beach Party rock the Croisette once more. In collaboration with our headline sponsor Story:, and our friends at D0C70R 7R0Y, Hero Productions, Lobo, Stillking, Milk & Honey Productions, Ninch, Rebolucion and Felt Music, the party will be taking inspiration from our comic, and will be a Terminator themed event. So, to paraphrase Arnie, come with us if you want to party.
Before that, though, on Thursday morning at Cinema Olympia on rue de la Pompe, will be the shots sponsored Young Director Award. At 9.30am, we’ll be providing breakfast ahead of screening the brilliant winners of this year’s competition who might well be the future of this great business of ours. And, in the words of John Conner, ‘the future has not been written. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves.’
