“Like last year’s ri on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 2023 sees us shamelessly rip o pay homage to another classic story”

Thistime last year we were all just starting to get to grips with the world again. We’d come shu ing out from the places – both physical and mental – into which we’d been forced to retreat during the pandemic. We wandered, blinking into the bright light of the Côte d’Azur and the Cannes Lions which was, for many of us, the first time for a long time that we’d been overseas, or in the company of so many other people.
Twelve months on and the industry (and the world), hopefully, feels a bit more like itself again. Of course, there are still challenges to be faced; economic uncertainty, ongoing war, the rapid advancement of technology… you know, the usual sort of stu . But we can, at least, come together to discuss them, investigate them and stare them down in the company of our peers.
As well as being a great environment for learning and self-improvement, the Lions festival is an annual showcase of what the global advertising industry can achieve when it sets its collective mind to it. Despite the trials and tribulations of the year past, the work that wins at the festival is a creative, flag-waving tribute to the ingenuity, inspiration and inventiveness of the business.
We hope that the publication you’re holding in your hands is also a tribute, and not just to The Wizard of Oz. Like
last year’s ri on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 2023 sees us shamelessly rip o pay homage to another classic story and we once again have to thank our collaborators, writer Christopher Baker and artist Joe Totti, for bringing this story to the page. The comic, too, is a celebration of the industry and the creative people who work in it - albeit one with some sharp but ultimately loving edges.
And talking of celebrations; this Thursday in Cannes will see the annual shots Beach Party rock the Croisette once more (metaphorically, at least. We don’t want to get fined again!). We hope you can follow the Yellow Brick Road and join us and our sponsors Milk & Honey, D0C70R 7R0Y, Felt Music, PSN, VGBND and Extreme Reach from 10pm on the Croisette Beach where we’ll be having a veritable tornado of a good time.
Then, if you’ve got the stomach and the stamina, the following morning at 10am, at Niva Café on rue Felix Faure, we’ll be providing a much-needed shots-inspired breakfast ahead of this year’s screening of the brilliant and brave entrants to the 2023 straight 8 Shootout.
So, fly my pretties, and we’ll see you on the dancefloor!
