The Year in Review 2024

We Build Community

![]()

It has been an amazing year, at times terribly sad and difficult, yet with many moments of true inspiration. Our 2024 registration figures for Camp Shalom’s NOBO were the highest they have been in many years, as was the number of counselors we recruited for all three sessions. Gan HaYeled is now a “host facility” for the state’s Pyramid Model program and has been recognized for its work by the City of Madison. Midrasha remained the “safe haven” for local Jewish teens as they dealt with rising antisemitism (up more than 350% since the October 7, 2023, Hamas invasion of Israel) Anti-Defamation League (ADL), 2024.
We are working to weave full-time security into the management of both our headquarters, which houses Gan HaYeled, and the Goodman Campus, which houses Camp Shalom – without being obtrusive.
We wept every day that our hostages remained imprisoned in Gaza and rejoiced with their families and worldwide Jewry as the ceasefire took shape and we began to see them return home to Israel. How truly amazing the resilience of the Israeli people has been throughout the nightmare that began 10/7/23. We hope and pray for a lasting peace in the Middle East and a return of all of our hostages.
We will continue to support the people of Israel and needy Jews worldwide.
We have responded strongly and definitively to

Fred Gants Board President
the rising presence of antisemitism in our localcommunity and throughout this country, with expanded partnerships with ADL, law enforcement, and a state-wide Wisconsin Jewish Security program nearing its launch date. We cannot and will not allow such acts to intimidate us.
We continue to provide direct service with an expanded Gan HaYeled, Camp Shalom, and Midrasha. Those combined programs served over 1,000 youth in 2024 and provided over $85,000 in annual scholarships.
This is only possible with your financial support and involvement.
We began the 2024 Annual Tzedakah Fund Campaign with the loss of our largest annual donation, from the Goodman Foundation. With increased donations from so many of you and the hard work of our ambassadors, superbly led by co-chairs Lainie Minkoff and Jeremy Tunis, we have raised more this year than last, an amazing $985,000. For this amazing accomplishment, we are indebted to them and every one of you.
In the months ahead there will be many opportunities for members of the Madison Jewish community to do more, to activate your own level of volunteerism in the expanded service we must provide to keep up with the pace of need.

Let’s take a look back to appreciate and reflect on the year we had. It’s been quite a year filled with many memories and celebrations. We’re grateful to have been able to walk through it with you - and for creating these special moments in our community together.

Whether in the preschool entryway, the classrooms, the bathrooms, or even as we step into the Federation building upstairs, our program-wide expectations greet us—colorful visuals of a bohemian rainbow with a heart at its center and a smiling face adorned with a flower. These are not just decorations; they are daily reminders of the values we live and breathe. At Gan HaYeled Preschool, the sacred Jewish belief in b’tzelem Elohim (in the image of G-d) aligns beautifully with the evidence-based, multi-tiered Pyramid Model framework, which has guided our program-wide social and emotional growth for the past two and a half years.
Just as our visual reminders reinforce kindness and safety, the Pyramid Model serves as the foundation for ensuring every child at Gan HaYeled feels seen, valued, and supported. This research-based framework is designed to nurture social-emotional skills in children from birth to age five, equipping them with the tools to navigate relationships and emotions in healthy, meaningful ways. In a world where thousands of preschool children are suspended or expelled each year, the Pyramid Model takes a proactive, multi-tiered approach—training and supporting adults to foster positive relationships, create supportive environments, and implement tailored interventions.
Rooted in our Jewish values, we recognize each child as an individual and an essential part of our kehillah (community), treating every person with kavod (respect) and deep care. Because the values guiding our school are both Jewish and universally human, we became a program-wide implementation site with a clear purpose: to ensure every child thrives in an environment where they feel safe, supported, and never at risk of becoming part of those devastating statistics.
Through family engagement, effective teaching and learning strategies, support and coaching for our teachers, individualized interventions for children who need them, and assistance from city and state agencies, we are committed to creating a safe and compassionate
environment for all of our children, families, and teachers. We are constantly learning, reassessing old approaches, reflecting, re-evaluating, and problem-solving to help meet the evolving needs of everyone in our community.
Our deep commitment extends beyond our program. Gan HaYeled plays a leadership role on the City of Madison’s community-wide Pyramid Model core leadership team, BE HEART Madison. Through a city grant and invaluable partnerships with the Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health, the Madison Metropolitan School District, and BE HEART Madison, Gan HaYeled hosts workshops throughout the year for families in the Madison community, as well as for educators and agencies across Wisconsin.
In the spirit of tikkun olam (repairing the world), we are creating a community where every child, family, and educator is nurtured with kindness, respect, and the belief that we each have a unique role to play in making the world a better place.

Celebrating a Year of Connection and Growth and So Much More: PJ Library of Madison’s First Year with JFM In the winter of 2023, the Jewish Federation of Madison (JFM) proudly became the official partner of the PJ Library program in the Madison metro area. Since then, we’ve been on an unforgettable journey together, bringing a year full of joy, inspiration, and community-building events to PJ Library of Madison. From celebrating Jewish holidays to exploring mitzvot and from enjoying playful moments to diving into the world of storytelling, PJ Library has truly blossomed into a welcoming haven for connection and growth within the Madison Jewish community. As we reflect on this past year, we can’t help but feel immense gratitude for each of you—our PJ Library participants. Whether you’re a parent, volunteer, or child, your contributions make this program a shining success. Your passion, energy, and love for learning inspire us daily. Thank you for being such a vital part of our vibrant Jewish community!
A Year of Memorable Moments: This year, PJ Library brought plenty of smiles, laughter, and cherished memories. In May, we celebrated one year of JFM’s partnership with the program with a PJ Library Birthday Bash. We also embraced the spirit of the High Holidays with fun activities like apple picking at Sutter’s Ridge and celebrating
together in the JFM sukkah. As we wrapped up 2024, we celebrated Hanukkah with a joyful PJ Library Community Party—what a perfect way to end the year on a high note!
What’s Next? Looking ahead, we’re filled with excitement for the year to come! We can’t wait to roll out new programs that will continue to bring families together, with even more opportunities for mitzvah days, playdates, educational activities, and, of course, plenty of parties. We’re committed to fostering an environment where children and families can read, learn, grow, and connect— all while celebrating the richness of Jewish life and culture.
Join the Fun! If you haven’t yet joined PJ Library or know a Jewish family who would benefit from it, we’d love to have you with us! Signing up is easy—just go to our website: www.jewishmadison.org/pj-library

Jewish Federation of Madison staff, lay leaders, and board members joined thousands of other Jewish communal professionals in Washington, D.C., for the Jewish Federations of North America 2024 General Assembly. The event brought together Jewish leaders, advocates, and community members from across North America to discuss pressing issues, share insights, and foster connections to strengthen our communities. The delegation also attended the Stand Together: Unity, Strength & Resilience event, which included inspiring speeches and moving performances, standing united against antisemitism and in solidarity with Jewish communities worldwide. The group returned inspired to implement new ideas and strengthen our Madison community.

On June 16, about 200 people celebrated the start of summer at our annual Hava Nagila Jewish Community Picnic. They enjoyed games, activities, balloon art, food, giveaways, and more.

We loved our summer 2024 season at Camp Shalom! We welcomed back a majority of returning or otherwise connected-to-camp campers and returning staff members, and welcomed 140 new campers and 30 new staff members. This strong crew of returning and connected campers and staff help us keep our camp culture strong, and our new campers and staff help us try new things and expand on existing traditions. We got into the spirit of the Olympics with our own Sha-lympics Maccabiah, had fun with larger-than-life Minions and dinosaurs on Aleph-Bet-Hey Days, continued our Gimel and Dalet overnights under the stars, and celebrated Shabbat together every Friday. Thank you for your support during our 70th camp season!

Winter Camp 2024 was full of celebrations and trying new things! At Shalom, we lit Hanukkah candles at afternoon rally and learned the Debbie Friedman classic, The Latke Song. We danced, sang, reflected, and crafted together at our New Year’s Eve party, and on Shabbat we braided challah and Havdalah candles too. It feels wonderful when the holidays line up with winter camp, and we can celebrate our culture and the changing of the year together as a camp community. We were so happy to be joined by our NOBO friends on Friday afternoon to celebrate Shabbat as one with a song session, which included surprise guests from our summer staff to lead our special set of songs with guitar, violin, and piano. Our first-ever NOBO winter campers had an amazing week learning how to ski or snowboard, ice fish, and rock climb, too! We are so proud of how our campers and staff came together for this pilot program, and we can’t wait to bring it back next year. We’ll see you for Winter Camp Shalom & NOBO in 2025!

The summer of 2024 was a great time at NOBO! Our campers had a wonderful time connecting with friends new and old, engaging in many different activities, and learning new things! Some of our highlights included a visit to Mt. Olympus at the Wisconsin Dells, overnight camping trips for 6th-9th grade, and a visit from the Madison Forward, Madison’s professional soccer team! We also enjoyed our two all-camp on-site days, our annual Maccabiah competitions, and our first annual NOBO carnival! Our daily off-site options included activities like visits to local pools and splash pads, Haven’s Petting Zoo, the Vilas Zoo, the Union, the Overture Center, Devil’s Lake, other state parks, and so much more. We also spent some time swimming at camp, Israeli dancing, doing art projects and on-site activities, and having the most fun and rowdy Friday afternoon Shabbats! Our musical team kept us dancing and singing and having a great time at Shabbat and all summer long! Our campers were awesome and willing to try new things, and our staff did an amazing job bringing the fun, excitement, and positive vibes daily! We’re already looking forward to camp, and we’ll be planning for another great summer!

In May 2024, 4 students graduated from Midrasha Hebrew High School. Midrasha is a program in which the Jewish Federation of Madison, in partnership with Beth Israel Center, Congregation Shaarei Shamayim, and Temple Beth El, provides students with experiences and educational opportunities that will strengthen their Jewish identity and encourage and stimulate their desire to learn about their heritage. We celebrated the accomplishments of the graduates on May 8, and presented the Midrasha Incentive Award of up to $3000 to each of our graduates. This award can be used in the future as reimbursement to further their Jewish life through educational and travel experiences.

At any given moment, the Jewish Federation of Madison, part of a network of 60+ Federations throughout North America, touches the life of someone in need—here in Madison, in Israel, or throughout the world. The Annual Tzedakah Fund Campaign fuels this vital work. This year’s kick-off occurred at Beth Israel Center, where we welcomed noted Jewish philanthropist Andy Hochberg from Chicago. He reminded us of leadership expectations, and the event set a tone for the entire campaign.

At this year’s 84th Annual Meeting, held on November 19, 2024, we recognized people for their leadership. Aaron Seligman is this year’s Miriam Singer Sulman Young Leadership Award winner. A member of our recent MADCAB graduation class, he and his wife, Jamie, co-chair the Camp Shalom Committee with contagious excitement and energy. Stefanie Kushner received the Jewish Community Professional Award named for Andrea Stein, of blessed memory. Lainie Minkoff and Jeremy Tunis received the Ben Minkoff Volunteer Service Award for their devotion to our Jewish Federation and community.
We began this year’s Annual Tzedakah Fund Campaign with the loss of our largest annual donation - more than $100,000 from the Goodman Foundation. While we had time to prepare for the loss, it remained a challenge still on the horizon until this year. Our final total of $985K represents the increased financial commitment of hundreds of our supporters, along with the hard work of our legion of ambassadors, who reached out to past supporters for their donations. This is more money than we have raised for the annual Tzedakah Fund Campaign in many years and a giant step forward to enhancing our service to the community.
As we continure to struggle with the war in Israel, we can take stock of the past 15+ months and how Israel has survived under these enormous tensions.
Every day since October 7, our community has held the hostages in our hearts, wept for their plight, prayed for their safe return, and mourned for those whom we lost.
Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, more than 1,600 Israelis have been killed, thousands injured, and hundreds abducted into Gaza. At the same time, Hezbollah has relentlessly launched rockets into northern Israel, displacing more than 76,000 residents and putting entire communities under threat.
The Jewish Agency’s response has been swift and comprehensive, prioritizing the safety of new olim (immigrants) and elderly residents, while providing immediate and ongoing support to victims of terror. We are on the ground, offering evacuation options, resilience seminars, psychological support, and economic assistance to those impacted.
As the war continues, we are working to rebuild disrupted communities and provide support for children and youth facing severe educational and social challenges. We are also connecting Jewish communities worldwide with those affected in Israel and strengthening communities around the globe as they face an unprecedented surge in antisemitism.

families after their horrific ordeal. Their strength and resilience are an inspiration to us all. We celebrate their return and offer our support as they begin the difficult journey of healing and recovery. At the same time, we remember that many more hostages remain held in captivity. We cannot forget them. We continue to pray for their safe return.

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) ‘s annual report has always been something to look forward to.
It’s a well-produced document that highlights the work of the crown jewel of the worldwide Jewish community. Titled simply UNBROKEN, this year’s report is quite a message of the strength of our community. Our 2023 Annual Tzedakah Fund Campaign resulted in an allocation to the JDC of $68,000+.
Before the war began, one million Israelis benefitted weekly from JDC-developed social services. Within months of 10/7, JDC provided additional aid to more than 450,000 hardest-hit Israelis. It developed the NAFSHI (my soul) website to help serve the more than 2M Israelis who have developed PTSD. It created 200 daycare centers in evacuee hotels with a unique Hibuki doll therapy program.
Three and a half years after the War in Ukraine began, 53,500+ vulnerable Jews have received life saving assistance. In Latin America, Asia, and Africa, JDC cares for the vulnerable people.
We rejoice at the return of the first hostages to their
We remain UNBROKEN.

Adopted in 2016 by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, an intergovernmental organization, ANTISEMITISM is defined as a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”
624 kids in grades K-9 filling 1029 spots in multiple sessions at Camp Shalom
96 Campers and 22 staff enjoyed 4 days of fun during Winter School Break at Camp Shalom

It is sometimes masked as anti-Israel criticism, though we know the difference. Antisemitism can be expressed through words, actions, or violence – and we’ve seen it rise by more than 350% since the 10/7/23 Hamas invasion of Israel.
With your help, we will continue to fight it on all levels: working with local school districts to identify and eradicate it; expanding our partnership with local, state, and federal law enforcement; providing local opportunities for training by the ADL, and creating the soon-to-be-inaugurated Wisconsin state-wide Jewish Security Network.
If you see Antisemitism or learn about it, say something. Do something. You can report it on our website or by emailing the Federation’s Executive Director, Alan Klugman, at executivedirector@jewishmadison.org.
